Thanks Sharan67, she's actually having 840ml of milk a day, some days even 1000ml on top of the solids. I'll try the light dinner idea and see how it goes:-)

A question for the more experienced mommies out there...My DD is almost 8 months old and has recently started increasing her food intake, she went from having solids just for the taste to be honest, to now having a healthy portion of cereal in the morning, a fruit snack (usually an apple and two plums or similar quantity of fruit), a medium (app. 100ml) bowl of food for lunch which ranges from vegetables with cheese, lentils with spinach and rice, chicken with veg,, meat with veg, etc, and then a yogurt as an afternoon snack plus 4 bottles of milk (210ml each). I'm struggling to find ways to keep her satisfied with her food, especially in the afternoon when I suspect the yogurt is not doing much and the milk isn't either so she tends to complain a lot and appear quite hungry. What do people commonly give for dinner? Shall I try a proper meal? Give some more snacks and if so, what? I don't want to start giving her bread and biscuits as I'm afraid they're empty calories and may be the start of bad habits. Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated:-)

Hi Eireann11, First of all congrats! With regards to your question, I think it all depends on personal circumstances but based on my personal experience I would suggest you visit any Dr you can get an appointment with relatively soon to confirm the pregnancy and to tell you if "structrurally" things look good. I had what is called a 'chemical pregnancy' once and the Dr told me it is imprortant to catch these things early because they can cause serious bleeding for instance. A more difficult case could be an ectopic pregnancy which though not common can have serious implications for the mother and is easier to treat when identified early. Not meaning to scare you, chances are you'll have a wonderful healhy pregnancy, I just personnally would try to see a Dr by week 8 at the latest just to confirm things are looking ok. I changed Drs around week 8, nothing saying you need to stick to the first one you go to, unless of course you are comfortable with them and they deliver where you'd like to have your baby. Ideally you'll be with the Dr you want by week 12 when they do the first important scan.

Hi Anniesmum, I think if you do a search for 'podiatrist' some recommendations will come up, I had searched a few months back but don't recall the details now. However, I have been to a podiatrist at Health Bay Polyclinic myslef, her name is Ann Roberts and I thought she was very good and gentle, I didn't feel a thing. Maybe look her up, if nothing else she could give you some good advice if she can't address the problem. It's not necessary that surgery will be required btw, it's amazing what they can do with medical files and blades, it could be simpler than you think...best of luck!

As everybody else has said, if you are the sponsor the answer is no and if you're not the sponsor then again you could get into a lot of trouble for employing a maid without sponsoring. The authorities are very strict and they do checks all the time, I heard the fine for the sponsor/employer is AED 20,000, not sure if that is accurate. Also, if she finishes her work so early and you don't need her for looking after children for instance, then it may be better to get an agency maid. I used to have a live out for a bit because I had no maid's room until I moved, but to be honest I didn't like it because from what I understand they live in shared accomodation to save money (usually 6 per room, in bunk beds) and there are all sorts of issues with cleanliness/health/bedbugs, etc. Not to mention that for the younger and more frivolous ones you have no idea what they may be doing at night. I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought in the past, but now with a young infant at home all these things have become very imprortant:-)

You'll be fine, and changing a baby in the aircraft restroom is actually easier (IMO) as there is little space and assuming you're standing in front of the flip down changing table there's nowhere they could go/fall/etc. Definitely call the airline as soon as you have your seats and request a bassinet seat, they do have them in business. If you book online and indicate during booking that you will be travelling with an infant, normally the system will allow you to select the bassinet seat yourself. And hope that business is not fully booked, both times I flew recently with DD when she was 6 months old they gave us an extra seat, we put a few pillows and her seat belt and she stayed there, slept etc. This was on Emirates, but I'm sure Etihad is very similar.

I also started with plain organic Rachel's but DD didn't seem interested. She does love Glenisk, both the plain yogurt with vanilla that is not very sweet and the fromage frais pots with fruit. I also tried Rachel's taste explorers or something (baby yogurt with organic fruit) but I found it to be too watery so now when I give that I add a couple of spoons of rice cereal and she loves it. But as others have said, ideally plain white organic...hopefully we'll get there soon:-)

SMA and S26 are not the same milk, but since SMA is available here you could try giving it to your baby and see if she takes it well so that you don't have to carry tins with you. Most supermarkets have the SMA prepared milk bottle that you could try for ease, they're also great for travelling so you don't need to worry about carrying boiled water etc. However, I must say that before my DD turned six months I tried to avoid switching formulas, perhaps there's no science to my thinking but I figured after six months and with solids having been introduced her digestive system is much more developed and shouldn't be seriously impacted by a formula change....

Correct, 3 doses, have to be done by 34 weeks I believe, we did them at 3, 5 and 6 months but you could also do them at 2, 4 and 6 months at the same time as the Hexa vaccine. We did them at Health Bay and the cost was about aed 440 for each dose. Are you sure the health card doesn't cover it? I have a friend who was telling me they did all the vaccines at a government clinic and were very happy so I assumed all vaccines were covered but I didn't ask for details...If I can get myself to go get a health card for the LO maybe we can do the rest at a government clinic as most insurance plans don't cover vaccines and I feel I've paid a fortune for vaccines already!

I used NAN AR but it's hard to find at super markets so I suggest you avoid it. I have heard very positive comments about Aprtamil AR which I see pretty much in all supermarkets...S26 AR is also readily available. Both are also available at C4 where they tend to be cheaper than Spinneys etc.

I agree with the ladies, don't think you need to worry about sterilizing at this stage. Besides, the food you prepare is not sterilized, the ice trays aren't sterilized, what difference would it make if you then put it into sterilized bags? Clean should be good enough:-)

Not sure if they do it, but I had a company come out very happily to install some curtain rails, they are one of the two that provide custom curtain/upholstery services for IKEA, which is where I got their number from. The name is Al Jafiliya and the number on their card is 043521087 and 043473661, give them a call if you haven't done so already, they might do it.

We have the Motorola MBP36 and we're very happy with it. Reception is very good and we live in a vila. All monitors will have trouble with some spots, for instance if there are a lot of metal surfaces in the way or a lot of appliances, that can't be helped, you just have to move it around a bit till you find a spot with good reception. We bought it on amazon uk, great prices and 2 day delivery.

Something else to consider....if you wish to save on the stroller/seat combo then yes, those travel systems like Graco etc come out much cheaper. Also, i found the moses basket a waste of money, if I have another baby I will either co-sleep for a bit (is that an option for you, they sleep so much better that way) or buy a travel cot which has a bassinet attachment and use it later on as a playpen. I just bought one for my LO and she loves it but she only uses it for play now, she's too heavy for the bassinet. These fold and come with a carry bag so you could easily travel with it much more easily than with a moses basket which you will most probably not use after your baby is 3 months or so. Best of luck:-)

Dont know about maintenance but for cleaning I was told I should clean the part where the bottle goes in and water flows through with a bleach solution as this is the primary reason for increased readings of harmful bacteria in water samples that come from water dispensers. Also clean the head of the bottle well before you put it on the dispenser.

I use fairy and there's no smell once I sterilize, I truly believe these special baby bottle cleaners are just one more way for the industry to make money from well intended mothers. Unless there is a more natural product out there, bottle cleaner or fairy I see no reason why the bottle cleaner is healthier for the baby. Obviously I wouldn't leave bottles soaking in it, or use large quantities when washing, as residue can build up, but that's the case with any cleaner.

Hi DCC, I suppose each baby is different, how much they should be eating depends on birth weight, appetite, growth trend etc but as a guide doctors calculate 150ml of milk per kg of baby weight, hence if a baby is 8kg they will tell you he/she should be having approximately 1.2 liters of milk a day. Of course solids substitute some of that milk but I was told by my Dr that even with a full meal of solids, the baby should still get at least 900ml of milk at the 5-6 month age. As others have said, why not visit a Dr? A lot depends on your baby's weight gain over time, if the trend is healthy the Dr will most likely not be concerned but they might suggest a different approach/meal combination for you. Also, I don't mean to be nosey, apologies in advance, but when you say jar of baby food do you mean you don't prepare the food yourself but that you use the ready made meals? I would personally only use those while out and about/traveling and otherwise prepare the meals myself using fresh fruits and veggies, especially since your LO is only 6 months old.

I think it's Al Ghandi that's causing your problems no C4. Indeed, A Rancher, but the reason I bring up C4 is because as I mentioned, my advice would be to buy from companies that handle their own after sales service. If I had known it would have been this bad dealing with the agents I never would have bought from C4, hence the mention. And I do believe that for a company with the buying power of C4 they should be able to at least get their agents to deliver on the date they promise their customers, that's quite basic.

How old is your little one City Chick? Mine went through a phase of crying a lot in the car between 2 and 4 months more or less, but now she's fine with it, in fact sometimes she's so quiet I get worried! I recently installed a small mirror facing her seat so I can see her in my mirror at the front-I used one of these starter packs they sell at places like Mothercare with baby on board signs, mirror, and window shades. I also usually hang a little toy from the headrest of the back seat and a butterfly thingy from Mamas and Papas on the handle of her car seat and these seem to keep her happy for a long time. It'll get better, I think they go through phases:-)

For every applicance you can purchase 1 2 and sometimes 2 years extended warranty. I bought an LG washing machine over 2 years ago and because I had the 2yr extended warranty all repairs were covered - and I have some time left til June. I am going to enquire if I can pay for another extended warranty as its worthwhile on any electrical appliance. Last week I bought a new laptop and it comes with 1 yr warranty and I paid for 1 more year as I dont plan on using this laptop after 2 years (saving for an upgrade to a Mac but its going to take some time). However, for anything Philips I only buy directly now from AL Gandhi who have a great team at their Jumeirah branch - instead of going to the Ras Al Kor location you can take your appliance to one of their branches .. if its small enough to take there yourself!! I did buy extended warranty on everything, that's not the issue. The issue is terrible customer service both from C4 and Al Ghandi and Al Ghandi in fact telling me I have to take the small appliance to Ras Al Khor. There's just nothing satisfactory about this whole experience. In any case, since there are sometimes threads about where to buy appliance I thought I'd warn potential future buyers and hopefully save them the trouble!

Thanks ladies, I don't think it's a flow issue as she's on size 3 teats but it did cross my mind to try the variable flow ones (i use Avent bottles) in case now that she's eating 210 ml (that is when she does finish her milk) she gets tired with the quantity and a faster flow might help. I do think she's ready for solids and hopefully in a week's time we will have made good progress but she still needs her milk....tomorrow I will try to let her demand her milk instead of me trying so hard to convince her to have it, I'm pretty sure she won't starve herself, I just hope I have the nerve to stick to it!

Hello ladies, I'm wondering if this has happened to any of you and how you managed. My 5 month old is not having her milk as easily as she used it, in fact sometimes she refuses to have any or she'll have a little bit and then stop. Dr says she's probably ready for solids so I started giving her rice cereal yesterday and today she managed to swallow it and seemed to like it. Having said that, even if I reach the point of giving her a full feed of solids (which is probably a week away from happening) she still needs a significant quantity of milk and she's being so difficult with it that I wonder if it's just a phase and I should just wait for it to change or if there is something I can do about it....any suggestions? Many thanks!

I also had a C section and I actually believe it is important to have a Dr checkup as there is such trauma to different muscles, including the uterus that probably only an ultrasound would show. Of course if that was part of what your midwife did I suppose it serves the same purpose.

Many different opinions obviously...as for WHO guidelines I personally believe we should use judgement as to when and how we apply them since they are intended as guidelines for the entire world, hence many different countries and medical systems. Quote from the WHO report: "In general, sterile liquid infant formula is recommended for infants at the highest risk of infection. Where sterile liquid infant formula is not available, preparation of PIF with water at a temperature of no less than 70 °C dramatically reduces the risk." As always premies and immunocompromised infants are obviously at the highest risk of infection, but these are presumably not the average infant we are talking about here. I have used 4 different brands of formula and all of them state on the box that they should be prepared with 40 C water so as not to compromise formula ingredients such as bifidus etc (don't recall the detailed ingredients). As for tap or bottled water, as long as it is boiled, both are equally safe. However, boiling water can increase the concentration of certain minerals or of chloride and therefore if you know your tap water is heavily chlorinated it's best not to use it for that reason. Also bear in mind that in the UAE, all bottled water is desalinated water, hence the same as your tap water minus the potential contamination from water pipes. So unless you are willing to buy Evian, Volvic etc you're probably just as safe using tap water.

I'll just preface this by saying as others have done that these are personal preferences but also that deviations from WHO and other medical body guidelines on sterilizing are only ok for full term healthy babies (i.e. not for preterm or babies with health conditions). Sterilizing bottles is in some ways a game of reducing the odds of a potential stomach upset or worse for your baby but there is no such thing as a fully 'sterilized' bottle. If you check online forums such as babycenter you will see the majority of moms claim to just wash the bottles with hot soapy water. I personally sterilize but I realize that I'm just reducing, not eliminating the chances of my baby getting sick due to bacteria developing in her bottle. And I do realize sterilizing is a big industry, if you buy Avent formula dispensers or pacifiers the instructions tell you to sterilize, whereas I've bought other big well known brands such as Chicco and Nuk that just recommend washing with hot soapy water and perhaps it's a coincidence, but they do not sell sterilizers. Anyway, what I do is close to what Sourskittleashnut does; I only use 4 bottles and I run a sterilizer cycle after each feed (so about 5 times in 24 hours) and as for when I'm out, I fill a bottle with freshly boiled water before I leave the house and by the time I need to use it it's generally a good temperature. If I know I'll be gone for many hours I may take a small flask with hot water to top up and bring back to a comfortable temperature. Whether you sterilize or not though, what will generally cause bacteria to develop is a wet and warm environment; so I would never carry around wet empty bottles. If you do fill a bottle with preboiled water it reduces the chances of that as you reduce the air in the bottle. Hence carrying pre filled bottles and a flask in case I need to top up or alter the temperature. And another thing I've learned the hard and expensive way, skip the overpriced bulky sterilizers and get a microwave sterilizer, much cheaper, faster and easier to use. And if you think about it, if you put some water in a tuperware with the lid loosely on and stick it in the microwave for a few minutes it'll probably do the same job....

I did both hypnobirthing and hypnobabies (they're slightly different, hypnobabies is an offshoot of hypnobirthing and is more modern and less regimented IMO). It didn't help me very much, I was able to do the breathing and manage through the contractions until they got to 2 mins apart and then I couldn't do it anymore as I didn't have time to recover. Having said that, I'm not a very zen, spiritual person (I'd be more into kickboxing than yoga to put it differently), so I'm sure it works much better for other people and hopefully for you too. If you have doubts that it's your cup of tea though I'd say don't spend money on it.

Hi Mmmmmm, as others have said, sounds perfectly normal and as Doctors will tell you,as long as they're gaining weight and their skin is in good condition (and by that I mean plump and "humid", not spot or rash free as in fact such skin conditions are common in the first few months) then it's all good. Mine went from sleeping almost all the time in the first 10 days, to not at all during the day for almost 2 months and now that she's 14 weeks she's sleeping relatively well during the day. Every baby is different and in the first few months they go through so many changes that it's hard to pinpoint one type of "normal" behaviour. As for the knees to belly, is this a new thing or has she been very active in terms of movement since birth? Mine was and still is so in our case it's not trapped wind, but I suppose if it is a new occurrence then it might be. Is she crying though and exhibiting other signs of distress? If it is trapped wind it can cause quite a bit of discomfort and I think you would be seeing more that just the leg movement. As for burping, if she tolerates burping her half way that's excellent, but if it makes her upset and she cries then it's not worth trying to do it. I had to introduce bottle very early on due to low supply but if you're exclusively breastfeeding it's probably too early to do so, they generally recommend waiting about 6 weeks when BF is well established before introducing a bottle. Best of luck, it really does get better and more and more amazing as they grow a bit older (and I'm just at 3 months, imagine what's to come next:-).

Hi all, revisiting an old thread here as desperately looking for Emulsifying Ointment in the large tubs but keep being met with funny looks when I ask for this in pharmacys here, they keep asking for the brand name but all I remember is that it was called Emulsifying Ointment BP. I've suffered from Eczema all my life but have kept it at bay using Dermovate ointment on the odd patch over the last few years but its flairing up again so I'd really like to get hold of this if I can as its the only thing thats ever really helped my skin with that layer of protective oil that it doesnt naturally produce itself. Any help appreciated! Don't know about the one you are mentioning, but I've been given Mustela Stelatopia and you can find it in most big pharmacies.

Pretty sure I saw it at Waitrose Marina Mall the other day but their stock can be a bit unpredictable so if you don't live nearby don't take my word for it. However, I would recommend you do some research into HA formulas if you haven't done so already, the different types (there are different methods and extents of hydrolysis apparently) and what they should be used for. I have found that some doctors suggest using it a bit too easily when it may not be necessary or even advisable. I was given NAN HA for suspected reflux, which really upset DD and made matters worse, then switched to normal and we're fine now. Of course different baby different reason etc, but just look into it a bit more (again, if you haven't done so already-I couldn't tell from your post) before you change your little one's diet. Did the Dr prescribe any cream/wash/lifestyle changes for the eczema or just the milk change? There's some great advice from moms with babies who suffer from eczema on this forum that you might find helpful. Best of luck!

I have the Quinny Buzz 3 and the Maxi Cosi Pebble (new version) with the family fix base for the car (or whichever one fits the next stage seat too, I always confuse the names). I really like the Quinny, it feels sturdy and nice to 'drive', though on the negative side it has a tiny basket and you cannot use its seat for a newborn, some say 4 months some 6 and I will probably veer towards the 6 month advice. So, in the meantime, I use the Pebble when I take DD out or an umbrella type stroller that becomes flat. My understanding is that the Bee goes flat, so presumably you can use from birth and that could be a big plus if you plan to be out and about a lot.

The Crane brand from Just Kidding and Toys R Us is good for large rooms. The large a capacity means it can stay on all night without topping it up. It also has a filter as an extra that you can buy for use with tap water. We used a few different ones before this one an they all stopped working after a short while for various reasons and were also too small for the room. Thanks Sparkly, will check it out! Love the name btw:-)

Many babies develop skin rashes or worse in the first couple of months due to their skin being very sensitive initially, so I would definitely avoid fabric softener, many times it even causes issues with adults. I use Ecover fragrance free-non bio powder for DD but am about to try Purity Sensitive liquid which I heard is very good as well-Purex was also recommended. Instead of softener you can pour some white wine vinegar in the softener compartment, apparently it helps remove soap residue from clothes, softens them and keeps the washing machine in good condition (scale, if an issue).

Hi Bubbles, I also flew with a 5 week old recently and it was ok, we had some crying spells but overall quite manageable. Where I come from vaccinations start at 2 months and if you are flying economy and the baby has not had any vaccinations (esp. not BCG) and it's a really full flight I might be a bit worried about the air in the cabin. Then again, I know many many people do it and are just fine, depends how much you worry about such things. Best of luck!

Hi Redleaf, do you by chance know who is a Canadian Consulate approved photographer for passport photos? Hope you got some answers for the application, btw.
