Just remember - we come into the world alone (more or less!) and go out of the world alone - so we should be able to go to the cinema alone too!

This has happen to me twice because I own a flat with parking space but do not have a car. I don't even go down into the undeground parking area. But the space is part of my property and should not be occupied by someone else. The first time a car was abandoned in my space with luggage left in it. Security actually informed me the car had been there sometime. The police were called but they refused to move it. Eventually I had to got Jebel Ali police station with the head of security for my building - waited at least an hour in screened off women's area and made report to police - luckily the security man spoke Arabic! Had to pay for taxi there and back for me and securty man .Police then towed car away. Second time complained to security as saw car in my space and found out that car belonged to someone renting in the building - they were informed that the car must be moved by the concierge and it was. I made the point to security and management that all vehicles in the parking area should be identified with the owners and the flats they occupy. edited by bingo12 on 29/10/2014

Theres a current thread on britishexpats.com for the Middle East about this matter. The problem seems to be if you have an acccident while driving on the "wrong" license in UK whether your insurance will cover you - seems a bit of a legal debate.

It's a shame that it seems to have acquired a p**r reputation since day one for anyone thinking of going to it as it's in a convenient location for many people! Don't know how they treat the staff. Hope it can improve.

Are you discounting IKEA - the obvious? Some of their bed linen is Ok with thread count of 200+. Crate and Barrel is also not that expensive for furniture and general household items.

It's disgraceful that this has happened and I feel really sorry for you. The only thing I can suggest is that you email Ludmila Yamalova of HPL Yamalova & Plewka, they are based in JLT. You will find their email address on their website. She is a very knowledgeable property lawyer, a regular speaker on Dubai Eye and will answer questions via email. Hopefully she can help you. Good luck. edited by amelia on 12/10/2014 I emailed her a while ago about residence visas which she had been talking about on Dubai Eye but never had any reply!

Clyde and Co have an office in Abu Dhabi - they are international lawyers. I used them in Dubai ( but not a court case). They have been listed in legal500. They would probably give you a free initial consultation. Is there not govt. body in AD you can ask for help from?

Is it that a particular nationality of maids tend to be a bit spiteful and demanding - don't like to say which?! I think maids coming from Africa might be best.

It doesn't matter if you are South African. It is the same for everyone who isn't an Emirati or possibly from the GCC.

I don't really know but be careful not to try to clean too vigorously - I discovered a terrible black ring on the side of white bath under a large pop up plug that had not been moved for some time.It did not seem to be coming off with bleach and I used a fine brillo pad on it - only to discover I made it worse as brillo left permanent greyish mark that I suppose was from scratching the surface and the stain itself actually faded gradually from the bleach! You probably can find something from my good friend Google!

Hi bingo 12 Yes he owns the whole section of building we in. edited by Licorice on 09/10/2014 But was that because he bought multiple properties and so is just a LL and not the developer or managing agent to whom service charges are paid? Seems he has been paying the service charges as is normal for LL and not that he omitted to charge you as the developer or.managing agent for 3 years and surely he cannot claim it is for government or municipal charges as they don't get the money..

Think you should stick to your guns - depending on what Rera says and not pay any service charges. The LL pays the service/maintenance charge and presumably it is factor into the rent, to some extent. edited by bingo12 on 09/10/2014

It would seem the LL has been paying this charge as normal for 3 years but now is demanding you pay what he must have already paid out. Don't think he has a leg to stand on. Very bad practice for a lawyer to act in this way. As advised go to Rera asap. Ask neighbours too if they had anything - but that will only be if he is also their LL or as you say perhaps he owns the whole building and is only now getting round to demanding service charges. Can you find out before you go to Rera? edited by bingo12 on 09/10/2014 edited by bingo12 on 09/10/2014

If the windows have heat resistant glass - that probably is what you want then. If you are refering to the cost of air conditioning only - that does not get paid to DEWA ( anyone correct me if I'm wrong). The cost of the A/C goes onto your maintenance bill to your managing agent at the beginning of the year as the fee for "cooling" - even though of course it uses electricity - somehow it is a separate cost.

@sjpbingley We would be interested in this information for use in the future regarding hiring car on debit card. I think a lot of people get debit cards rather than credit cards. I don't think the banks in France do credit cards at all ( but may be mistaken). Ditto most offshore. If you have any contact details you could give out - would be grateful. Does one need to eye test still to hire a car?Thx

Hi Neve - I think it is quite common to have sand coming in your doors and windows and double glazing letting in the heat here! I am up 20 floors and I get sand coming in an Emaar building - which are supposed to be OKish. Before you replace all your windows you could try to seal them better instead. There are people who do this with rubber strips etc but I lost my contact. Ask around at maintenance companies, they may help. There is a man who only does this job!. I know my quote was quite expensive. You may actually try using those insulation stick-on rubber strips round door and window frames yourselves - especially those not constantly being openned or a silicon mastic injection gun at the parts that are supposed to be sealed. Regarding the double glazing letting in heat - perhaps triple glazing might help - but I'm not sure. I put up slatted wooden blinds to reduce heat but regret it as the sand sits on every slat and is difficult to clean. But you could ask a curtain company to install pull down blinds made of heat insulating material. edited by bingo12 on 08/10/2014 edited by bingo12 on 08/10/2014

Which is the most resonably priced for private insurance in this region - especially if you are willing to pay quite a high amount each year without the insurer paying anything? I think in BUPA the most you can agree to pay yourself is about the equivalent of £5,000 a year - to bring down the annual fee..

I have not experienced this problem but it seems to me as you have her passport she must either - a) come to you to get it b) try to get another passport from her embassy - you should inform the embassy concerned of your situation (that you hold the passport) so they do not issue another one to her (if she tells them it is lost). When she eventually contacts you to get the passport back - you ask her to reimburse you for the charge you were obliged to pay to immigration because of her actions - showing receipts.

Something else which I did not mention before. Dentists can also glue a cracked root to try to stick it together. I presume they will do this if there is no infection. I had this attempted soon after I had had a new crown on a front tooth - by a different specialist dentist in Harley street. The dentist cuts the gum above the tooth to access the root to glue it together. However, for me that did not work - but I think it does in some cases.

Just to say not everyone is suited to a transAtlantic and Caribbean cruise - although you think you will love it! We went on QE2 some years ago from Southampton to Florida then round Caribbean Islands and to New York, then flew back to Heathrow. Did not like it at all! It was Xmas/New Year and sea across Atlantic was very rough with waves splashing up to dining room windows, which was quite high up. Felt sea sick a lot! The Caribbean islands seemed all the same . We also spent half a day in Caracas (bused there). I found the boat was very closed in - I expect because it was built to cross the Atlantic and there was not much out door area. The food was very good and masses of it always on hand. Did not find much to do on the ship though and basically was very bored. Also - you are absolutely stuck with all the other people on the ship - if you don't like them. If you don't like the people you are seated with for meals, change your table straight away - otherwise it can be embrassing! The high light of the tour was a lunch at the Waldorf Hotel, New York for everyone on the ship ! But never again - it was expensive too!. edited by bingo12 on 06/10/2014

By "entry" do you mean outside or inside? If inside - bear in mind that fountains can be quite noisey - especially if this is also where stairs are to another floor - the noise will echo upstairs.

Thanks amelia for not being snobby about the dreaded IKEA ( my son also hates it - "IKEA - moi? NON!") .This is what I actually bought http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80220482/ I see the link is not high lighting - well - this is the UK site and if you could read about it - says thread count is 207. Price for double duvet and pillow covers in UK is £45 - so just a bit under what M&S or QVC sometimes is (oh no not that cheap QVC!).Anyway it says "Do not bleach".

I had a similar experience when I had an old filling removed to be replaced by the white porcelain. The denist drilled and drilled away to get out the old filling and for many weeks I had terrible pain. He gave me gel as well to put on the tooth for the pain - which seemed to work. Later I was told actually the dentist had drilled down to the nerve and the pain had been caused by the nerve dying - once it is dead - no more pain! But that tooth is now "defective" but does not cause much trouble. If you had a cracked tooth - they should show you the crack on an X-ray - I think - not just say "you have a cracked tooth". edited by bingo12 on 04/10/2014

Thanks izzy - don't want to hijack - but the Emaar buildings have their own post boxes for each flat in the entrances ( at least mine does) and post is delivered into those boxes once a week - Saturdays - by arrangement of the managment; always has been since building was occupied in 2007. If there are no post boxes in the building entrances - one either has to make a letter flap in the flat's door and hope Empost man will put letters through it - or be in when they come. Hope OP is interested in this! edited by bingo12 on 02/10/2014

If not - can you find a lady who is working arranging Emirati weddings as a partner - should be helpful? Did you do any courses in Wedding and Event Planning ? I see there are a few on-line and even an Institute of Wedding Planners in UK with an extensive web site! Good luck!

May I just ask - have things improved at Jumeirah Park - earlier people complained there was no park, security, barriers, signage etc? And has flooding stopped now? Some people had to wait 6 years to get their house from Nakheel here ( according to reports).
