Hamleys specifically puts a stamp near the barcode of their wrapped items, precisely for the sake of easy returns, etc. I had to recently exchange a toy there and had no problem because there was a stamp. Maybe because yours was a higher value exchange they were being more picky? Either way, take a look around...its really not THAT hard to spend a 1000 there, especially if you take a look into their sports section.

I'd highly a recommend a back and front double stroller as opposed to a side-by-side type. The latter is SO hard to navigate thru the not-uniform store aisles, doors, etc.

Its worth taking a look at the regular USPS rates. The packages I had sent in the past (around 5 - 8 kgs) were much cheaper thru USPS than UPS/FEDEX/DHL,etc.

I once made a cheesecake for company that just cracked so bad I was too embarrassed to serve it. I ended up layering it with a canned fruit topping as a parfait in a pretty glasses.

I know a lady who was making soft dolls at home and would make the hair whatever color or type you wanted. She kept it all Islamic style ie, no facial features. The quality was quite impressive. This was a couple years ago, but if this is the type of thing you're looking for, I can ask around and see if she's still doing them.

Wow, in UAE terms, this is AMAZING! Paternity leave too? Between this and the breastfeeding laws, there seems to be a new trend of encouraging and supporting parents. So proud to be a Sharjah resident :-D Insha'allah the rest of the country will catch on!

The Light Festival! It's absolutely amazing!! I look forward to it all year. Check out www.slf.ae for locations, etc. Other than that, al Majaz waterfront has a nice selection of western restaurants (with a great view of the water and light show), Blue Souq, the spice shops and traditional stores along the Corniche (al Fisht area) and if you get here early enough in the day, Arabian Wildlife Centre is great.

We decided to go last minute, and we registered right before walking out the door. Once we got there, our names weren't in the database for pre-registering, but it was okay because you could register on site. We had a great time, alhamdulillah! I met some incredible ladies, Muslim and Non-Muslim. Everything was SO organized and nicely planned. There was even a buffet, but was served at 11 pm and we left a bit before that. In case any of you ladies were there and sitting in the top level, I was there with my young daughter who was super friendly, sitting next to random ladies and striking up conversation on abayas, school, etc, lol. My apologies if any of you all were one of her targets, heh. Anyone going today? What did you think of last nights lectures?

An expatwoman charity drive would be brilliant! Guess thats for Admin to decide. My hope is that with enough exposure and publicity to this tragic case, the hospital will be compelled to waive the fees, insha'Allah. As a mother, this just breaks me....sigh.

Y'all realize this has NOTHING to do with actually breastfeeding and EVERYTHING to do with being a guest in a another country/culture that highly values modesty and keeping body-exposure to a minimum, right? And if you don't like it, no one forced you to live here.

Always good to see an OB/GYN when you first learn of your positive pregnancy. It is good to building a trusting relationship with your doctor. I plan on using the same OB that I used with my last baby, so I already have that relationship with her. Think I'll wait a few more weeks, and save a few more bucks that way too! Mumofmoo, I'm thinking I'm about 6 weeks or so...

You should go for a 12 week Ultrasound and biochemical screening (if you dont know how far gone you are then go to the doc for a blood text) Then I would say at 20 weeks, see how things are and what the Dr would advise. You can buy packages for pregnancy care where everything is included from start to finish Thanks for your reply, Mumofmoo! I purchased the 12 weeks package during my last pregnancy, even though I was aroung 16 weeks at the time (rip off!), but like I said, these initial visits seem like a waste of time. But I don't want to do anything unhealthy for my baby. DH is saying wait 12 weeks, but I feel like that a long time.....

Some of you may or may not know the boob-show that goes on inside the women's side of a masjid, lol. There's no shame to a muslim woman's breast feeding game. I'm a well-endowed mother and even I get a little shy seeing strange womens boobs dangling about out as they switch the babys position, etc. But hey, kudos to them and their healthy children! Like one poster mentioned, breast feeding is highly encouraged in Islam. Verses in the Qur'an explain this right belongs to the baby for up to 2 years, and yes, it is considered a right a child has on his mother. I don't think anyone here is saying breast feeding is bad, or even worse, a shameful thing. It's more a question of how/where you do it and who exactly is gonna get the peep show ;) As conversations like these usual go back to, its about being sensitive to a culture that values modesty, especially between the genders. A women flashing her boob in a mall , breast feeding or otherwise, and a women with her butt cheeks hanging out her sorry excuse for shorts are both offensive and displaying a crass disregard for their host country. Just my opinion.

Bubbagump, they're readily available in the States and before I ask someone to ship it, I thought it'd be worth looking around here. Thanks anyways! HotRice, not that its any of your business, but I'm not a first time mom by any means, Alhamdulillah, so I'm quite familiar with the "pain and discomfort" of having children. This pregnancy, my morning sickness is super-sensitive and its not fun swallowing a horse-pill only to have to vomit it up again. My friends and family all take the gummy versions back home, just hoping I could find it here to avoid some extra discomfort.

My hair used to be the same. Products that really helped are: L'Occitane : Repairing Shampoo & Conditioner ( Great for dry and damaged hair) I then moved on to: Kerastase Nutri Thermique Shampoo I'm also a believer in hair masks. I've used quite a few, but the most moisturising one is probably the Kerastase Oleo Relax gold packaged one. It is also pretty thick so lasts forever. Finally for frizzy hair, I can recommend the Ultime elixir (a serum from Kerastase). I started with the gold but as my hair calmed down and softened I found it way too heavy so have moved on to the pink. It was great when I first started though. Now, for a "miracle" like treatment with instant results, I'd recommend the "Chronologist" from Kerastase. Do it yourself rather than at the salon as the price would be much more reasonable. I use it before any party/ event and it always looks like I just got a hair makeover. I hope this helps! Thank you Gentle! This is exactly what I'm looking for, a list of remedies! Do I have to get these from a salon or are they readily available in hypermarkets?

I forgot the exact name now, but its from the pharmacy to help with hair loss (you know, for that initial new-expat-balding-hair-syndrome!) It comes in a small silver bottle and costs a pretty penny. But then I follow it up with a moisturizing conditioner. I change conditioners often so my hair doesn't get "used" to one kind , based on advice from before.

From my (limited) understanding, homeschooling/unschooling isn't illegal but at the same time isn't recognized by the ministry of educ. I will say that I worked at a very well known school and had many previously homeschooled students admitted into the school based on passing the entrance test. There are many other homeschooling families using an unschooling method, find us on facebook under the DUNEHA (Dubai and Northern Emirates Homeschooling Association) group!

we have the DU package about 680 dhs a month can i get this? Sorry, I have no info about tv packages, etc. Maybe someone else can offer more info. I agree, heart breaking! Next thing she will be expecting, which will cause a huge dilema. The new maid is the old maid that he once kissed and they got rid of her. It's all happening! I remember when she left, and was happy for it. I don't like the way she helps make Tom feel out of place and unwanted amongst the rest of the family! Hope they sniff her out and get rid of her soon. oooh! I never thought of Anna getting pregnant...that would be awful!!

The scam is they don't send you the credit - only text you to say they did, presumably hoping you won't bother to check as it's such a small amount... But I still don't see how that's a scam? Just sounds more of an annoyance than anything else. I also received credit and the guy called at least 5 times. Sounds weird, don't know what they were trying to get at.

Have you tried Huda Sisters? They have many gatherings quite often. Also you could enquiry at Jumeirah Islamic Centre on Al Wasl Road they'll have lots of classes as well. 043949461 If you are talking about Farhat Hashmi's Al Huda, they don't do anything suffi. But they do have many halaqaat, classes, etc.

What kind of items...like a parcel or a crate? For parcel-sized items we use USPS (considerably cheaper than UPS) and pay a little more to get it insured.

Looking for a mattress that will fit a standard Graco Pack n' play. The "mattress" (if it can even be called that) that comes with it, is just so hard and thin. We use our pack n' play as a crib and I feel bad making baby sleep in something so uncomfortable. Anyone seen anything like this around?

I posted this in the food forum a few months ago but never got any hits....hoping someone can help me out. Where's the best place (and price) to get maple syrup? And I'm talking about the real Canadian stuff, none of that "maple flavored" junk, lol. My Spinneys only has one brand/size and its ridiculously overpriced. I know I'll be paying at least double than what I'm used to back home, but would like a little more of a selection.

Hi Ladies. Can anyone tell me the most efficient way to contest a traffic fine which I am 100% certain we are not responsible for. DH had a text this morning on his mobile with said traffic violation: September 14th at 0145 hours Jumeirah Road AED200 fine for using hand held mobile whilst driving. How do I know it wasn't us ? We were at home tucked up in bed. We have in the past paid dubious fines on our cars - lane discipline etc, but now I am thinking that maybe we should have contested them!! I know it's not the point, but is it illegal to use your cell while driving? Or does this mean texting?

I thought I saw a "satisfaction guarantee" sign near the registers? I have had a few issues with their "fresh" food too (bakery and deli) and just called in to the manager. They never asked for a receipt or anything, just apologized and offered to replace the items. Definitely report to municipality but also try calling store for your money back, doesn't hurt to try!
