When I was searching for a double stroller a few months ago, I came across a lot of sit & stand types on Dubizzle. There seems to be only one ad popping up now (don't know how to post the link without a paragraph long address!)...but keep checking every few days. Some thing is bound to come up, insha'allah!

Ok, I debated if I should reply to this thread or not, as I don't want to turn this into a "doctor bashing" reply but in the end, I just don't want any other parent or child to go through what we had to. My son was 3 weeks old when the Dr circumcised him. I don't know if you have met him already, but if I had the chance to meet him before the procedure, I would have certainly changed my mind and left. During the actual procedure he yelled at my husband because he apparently came within a 5 feet off the hospital bed where my baby was strapped in and crossed the "sterile zone". We were not aware of this invisible thresh hold and were honestly just attempting to comfort our screaming new born. He used the old fashioned razor method which was quite traumatic (and ******) for my son. My older son was circumcised in the States using the plastibell (razor and blood free!) method and I just assumed it would be the same this time. I take responsibility for not asking the doctor before hand, but I advise you to find a doctor who uses the plastibell method instead. At the "check up" one hour later, he gave a brief look at the penis, and answered a phone call in the middle of our conversation. At which point he waved a good bye to us....in other words, kicked us out before we could ask any follow-up questions! And the worst part of all, at our 2 month check-up, our regular pediatrician let us know that the circumcision was in fact done incorrectly. The foreskin was not cut symmetrically and a lot of excess skin was left. In other words, his penis barely looks as if it was circumcised. Our doctor recommended we get it surgically corrected when he is older and can be placed under general anesthesia. Ugh...just thinking about how rude he was gets me so upset and sad for my little baby. Thank you for sharing your experience. Very helpful. We did meet him and had the same impression as you. Not very pleasant and the answers to our questions were in a joking way. Didn't earn our trust. We have changed our mind. Thank you again. Well I am relieved to hear he wasn't that way with just us! Glad you changed your mind with the doctor and were able to avoid any unnecessary trauma for your son :) Where did you end up going?

All of our cleaning is done with baking soda and vinegar. It works well and is cheap. where do you buy large packs of baking soda? I've been looking to do this for a while but have only ever seen the small fancy tins of baking soda in the baking stuff aisle, which I don't think would go very far. I found a 20 kg (!) bag at the Deira Fish Market about a year or so ago, still not finished with it. Its not the *best* quality baking soda, as its a bit clumpy. But we don't use it for baking, only cleaning and deodorant and so I don't mind. The bag says its from China.

Another happy fan of the Copper IUD! I had it placed back in the States, kept it for about 3 years and removed before I came to Dubai. I remember feeling one strong cramp during placement and mild discomfort and spotting for the day and that was it. I don't remember a huge change in my period flow. Removal was also the same. I was very, very happy with it and am strongly considering getting it again.

With all due respect, and I don't mean for this to sound as mean as it does when typed out, but what does MoH have to do with your decision? Weather or not they allow it is not the point since you also agree that it would be highly irresponsible on your part to travel with your sick child. If MoH gave the okay, would you go ahead and do it? Would a ban from MoH be the only reason you wouldn't? I would hope not. Just like another bump in the road of parenting, this is just one of those things that you have to do and will seemingly "ruin" your plans. But for the safety and health of your child and hundreds (literally) of other people, I think you should re-schedule your travel dates.

A midwife is not specialized in "assisting" with deliveries - she is fully trained and qualified to deliver a baby and in western countries that train them most of the units are midwife led - the doctors only attend high risk deliveries. Some of the government hospitals here also have that system. With private health care they may just assist as the Doctor will have been paid a large amount of money for obstetric care so should be at the delivery. Either way they are fully qualified and capable of attending to deliveries plus antenatal and postnatal care. Obstetric ( labor & delivery) nurses do not to have this training of overall responsibility for deliveries although should be experienced in assisting with all aspects of obstetric care. ETA - In this country you are more than likely to find that obstetric nurses ( rather than midwives) have had no formal training but have picked up ward based experience over the years along with some in-house training in some cases. (In fact the same is true of all nursing specialties here). edited by Genie on 11/08/2014 Thank you so much Genie! That was probably one of the most clear and detailed answers I've had to this question. I feel a little better with the set-up now :)

My doctor will be available to deliver at City and since I've heard so many good things about it, I'm seriously considering it. According to her (the doctor) one of the biggest difference at City is that there are midwives and not nurses and on-staff Dr's to care for you through out the delivery. So my big question is....whats the difference between a nurse and a midwife? My previous delivery was at Welcare and while it wasn't so bad, it wasn't great either. Prior to that, I had my other deliveries in the States with nurses who were AMAZING. Just want to know what to expect from City.

Thanks for all your help ladies. But sadly, we returned our cooker. I was suspicious when all I found was glowing reviews online and yet we kept running into issues with ours. But the last straw was when all the numbers of the 2nd hand shop that sold it to us were suddenly disconnected...less than 2 days after we bought it! A quick trip in person sorted it out, alhamdulillah. Back on the hunt for an affordable and good quality gas/electric cooker. Thanks again!

I'm in the same boat as you (brought appliances from the US) and after having burned through a few precious items (RIP, my dear Chi, sniff sniff), I think I have it figured out now. You have to first make sure your appliance can run on a 220v connection. It should say so on the plug or bottom of the actual appliance. Then use a convertor that can handle the watts of the appliance (again, written on the plug or appliance). It's preferable to use a convertor that handles more watts than the appliance to avoid any possible damage or lower performance. For example, for a 700 watt food processor, you should use a 1000 watt convertor. Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong!

Has anyone brought over a Ninja Blender from the States and successfuly used it with a convertor? My kitchen aid's motor/power has suffered a lot from the convertor and I don't want to spend the money or hassle on a Ninja if its the same way.

If I compare my post-part Dubai experience to my post-partum American experience, it was dreadful. 1. 1 hour after delivery, baby was taken for cleaning, shots, etc. and I was expected to WALK back to the recovery room on my own. In the States, a lot more bonding time is allowed before being separated from baby and at no point in the first 24 hours (or usually the entire hospital stay) are you expected to walk anywhere. Instead, you are assisted into a wheel chair and wheeled around room to room. 2. There was no one to assist me in going to the bathroom, getting up and out of bed or guiding me on they hygienic ways of cleaning the delivery area. I'm grateful for having my first baby in the States where the nurses where phenomenal at showing me each and every detail of taking care of not only baby, but my own healing body. Sure, it was super embarrassing to have a woman sit you down on the toilet and help wash you down there, but in hindsight it was one of the most selfless and caring acts on the part of the nurses. In Dubai, no one helped me out of bed much less sat me on a toilet! 3. Back home there are constant checks on baby and mother through out all hours of the night and day. Annoying but necessary, I understand. The post-partum monitoring I had in Dubai wasn't as rigid (is that a pro or con?) but I was super annoyed that when they would barge in at 3 am when baby and I were asleep, they would turn on all the lights and talk very loud. Not very sensitive to an exhausted mommy! 4. In Dubai, the only post-partum hygiene tools you are given are pads, some mesh underwear and the bed pads. And they are very stingy about them. But on one of my many unsupervised bathroom trips,I just looked in the bathroom drawers and found the stash of the pads, etc. and just used what I needed. In the States both times at different hospitals in different states I was given bags and bags of Tucks pads, spray bottles, creams, laxatives, soap, etc. All that being said, if I didn't have my back home experiences to compare it to, I'd think my Dubai experience was okay. But personally speaking, I miss the bed-side manner and extra attention to detail back home.

BintNizam, I use a UAE credit card to purchase stuff from Amazon UK, Debenhams, etc and I do incur an extra bank currency conversion charge. Thank you so much for your reply, Apricot! I was just googling for some info, but couldn't find much. Do you mind if I ask how much your bank charged? Maybe I should just ask my bank. Also, I'll be using an (american or uae) debit card, not a credit card, and shipping to a UK address...do you think it makes any difference?

I love finding fellow Sri racha addicts :) Its so hard to enjoy pizza, pasta, sandwhiches, etc. these days without my beloved rooster bottle! Hi BintNizam123. I've just found this sauce, and absolutely love it!!! Spinneys in RAK had it a couple of weeks ago (I bought 3 bottles of the hot chili sauce - and we put it on everything!). I'll have a look when I'm there later this week. If you can't find it in Sharjah, let me know and I'm sure I can get some and get it to you somehow! I'd be declaring a 'national disaster' if we ran out of it!!! :-) Puck, you've got me so excited and hopeful now!! Please let me know the brand and I'll start hunting right away! Appletiser, I see the kikkoman ones often. Guess its time to try it out! Vancouverite, lol, so funny! In the very scary event that it for some reason does go completely off the market, we'll at least have each for support ;) (also, LOVE Costco!!)

You can find sriracha at spinneys (glass bottle) Which brand? Kikkoman? Is it nice and spicy? I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the factory in Irwindale, CA has been ordered to shut down due to residents' complaints. I remember reading that article some time back, but surely that can't be the ONLY factory world-wide, can it??

So I just squeezed out the last drops of my beloved Sri Racha sauce and it'll be at least 6 months before I can count on anyone to replenish my supply from back home. So can anyone recommend a suitable substitute? I see many "garlic chili sauces" on the shelves and have tried a few, only to be severely underwhelmed at the flavor and heat-levels. Can someone give me a name/brand that is decent enough?

Coming from the West, I'm new to this whole "maid game" and don't want to be offensive or rude. I have a maid coming from an agency, if she comes early in the morning (7am), do I offer her something to eat/drink? If she's staying for the whole day (4 hours or more) do I offer her lunch/snacks? Sorry if this sounds silly! I just feel bad since she's constantly working for so many hours at a time with no breaks and I'm sitting down to a cup of tea, etc. over here.

I'm sorry, I'm confused. Why are baking sets for little girls any different than baking sets for adults? Aside from the size of an apron, but I don't think that what you mean by baking sets anyways. I'd go to Lakeland or better yet a dirhamain store, grab some colorful melamine bowls, silicon whisks and cute colored baking cups and make a little basket out of it. For a 6 yr old, you don't need top of the line. Just something to excite her about being in the kitchen.

I can't help you with a price comparison between Kenwood/Cuisinart or even with how much either of them cost right now! What I *will* say is that I have a fantastic Cuisinart food processor that I've had now for just on ten years and it is still working like an absolute dream. I love it. It's big, but came with lots of different fittings (and a small bowl to change to if required) but I mostly use it for general food processing and grating/slicing. Pro-tip: always wash the bowl and lid by hand. Everything's dishwasher-proof, but I'm told they last longer if you look after it in this fashion. Seriously. One of the best kitchen buys I've made, apart from my Kitchenaid mixer, that is. ;) Thanks so much for your reply, LB! You're only confirming my best suspicions about Cuisinart ;) I think I'll just have to go for it!

Hi BintNizam123 Did you find a solution to your problem? I have been looking everywhere for chewable prenatals but no luck so far :( I desperately need them as well. One of my friends is travelling to the States in April, only then can i get my hands on some. Pls let me know if you have found anything here in Dubai, it would be of great help to me as I cant swallow large tablets. TIA! So sorry Afja, I never found them and had to settle on the regular old type. I'm in the same boat as you and will have to wait a few months to have someone bring them from the States. Or you can have someone just mail it to you from there...empty it out of the bottle and send in a plastic bag. Shouldn't weight much at all!

First of all, where can I find a Cuisinart Food Processor? Any idea of the price range? After burning through at least 3 different mid-range food processors, I'm ready to step it up a notch and make an investment in a good quality one. Cuisinart is the only one I know of that fits the bill. But before spending that kind of money, is it really worth it? How does it compare to the top of the line Kenwood ones, which I assume are cheaper?
