I think once schools officially begin, then all the autumn/winter clothing comes out. But if you look high and low, you might be able to find some summer clothes on sale. Children Place is my go-to for any type of kids clothes or if you don't mind off-brands, Max or Red Tag usually has something.

We have stayed many places here and in the USA. We have filled our applications online and simply state 2 children in our reservations. We have never had an issue showing up with our Family of five (2 adults and three children). Although, for our sanity we usually have a suite or a larger sized room as it is difficult to squeeze five into a small room. Hope this helps. This might be a problem when you have inclusive packages and a certain number of guests have meals included. I never mention the baby whose travel cot we bring with us, only the number of children would need their own sleeping arrangements.

Oh I would love some info. I am desperate to become the person I want to be and not this very tiered unmotivated person. Which Doc do you see here in Dubai. Me too!! I have heard so many conflicting theories over the years about which vitamin/medication/brand/diet that will magically solve my thyroid problems. I would love to hear a real persons real solution. Niki, help us out ;)

Thanks bintnizam! That sounds good. Can you remember which type of room that was? Hmm, I'm not completely sure but I think it was the deluxe (the lower priced option than the superior) . The person at the booking number made it sound like it was a standard amenity in all the deluxe rooms. Yes, you do have to pass thru it to use the bathroom, it wasn't a problem for us. We were just grateful to have some privacy but still be able to check on the kids thru the beveled glass in the sliding doors.

We went out to Al Aqqah Beach (in Fujairah) and stayed at the Iberotel Miramar resort. The rooms have an attached are with 2 sofa beds (that will be dressed up in linens if you need). I loved that the area could be closed off with sliding doors. We had our 2 children plus a travel cot for the baby there and had a "private" bedroom area for my husband and I. There was no additional charge for the kids, if I recall.

Childrens Place online has free shipping to Dubai if you spend $100. Make sure you browse the site with $ currency and not AED as the prices are much cheaper in $'s. They have great quality clothes and frequent sales.

sydneygal: I almost cried tears of relief after reading your reply. For the first time, it seems like someone else knows what we've been going thru! I will be contacting you by email soon (once the kids are back at school!). You gave me and my husband alot to think about and we are definitely interested in following a course of treatment like yours, so I think I'll be needing your help with that. I'm also going to book with Dr. Darwish during her next fever. Thanks again for all your help! norak: wow, I never heard of anything like this with adults! Glad to hear your episodes are less frequent, but still puzzling that nothing showed up on any blood work? My daughter seems to be slowly outgrowing them too, but in the meantime I don't want it to escalate to anything more serious. Asti: good point, except we have moved to a different apartment. I thought it might have been the school, as her fevers are less frequent in the summer time but not sure. MrsB and Bubbling Creek: aren't there any other symptoms with malaria? I was diagnosed with Malaria when I was 7yrs old. I remember lots of diarrhea, dehydration and high fevers. My daughter has nothing else except the occasional sore throat. edited by BintNizam123 on 07/09/2013

Do you have a bank account in the states? if so, you can set-up online banking and most major banks let you send checks from your online account to any American address.

Asking for a friend of mine... She has a British passport, was terminated from her job earlier this summer and is currently on a visit visa. She is trying to move to Qatar for a new job, but has not signed a contract with them and is not on their visa yet. Will she be able to ship her things (thru a moving company) on her UAE visit visa? Will there be problems crossing into Qatar and going thru customs, clearance, etc. with her items and car if she doesn't have a Qatar residency visa? Am in the process of asking some "experts" but they're taking their time to respond and she's in a bit of a time crunch. Hoping someone could shed a little on this !

Thanks so much Mrs B! I've seen some pretty interesting patter and color combinations! I admit, I'm a more simple/traditional kind of gal, so I'd like something a little tame ;) I'd like to try your tailor in Qusais, thank you very much! Also, what is the usual price of the whole set? I like the tight pants (choudidaar) style better.

I always pictured kingfish as being strong flavoured. Where did u buy it? I saw a whole tuna here in AD for 20Dhs a kilo. Was so tempted as I.love sashimi and sushi, but too much for just two adukts and I dont like cooked tuna We got it from the fish souk in Sharjah. Came out to about 70Dhs for the whole thing, including butchering and cleaning. All in all it was about 2kg of fish. There wasn't a strong taste at all...one of my children was convinced they were eating chicken, lol. I marinated it in tandoori-like spices for a few hours, lightly fried each side before dunking the whole pieces in a curry to slowly finish cooking through. Was delicious!

DesertRose: your response is just what I was looking for :) Going by tripadvisor, I got the feel that Sifawy wasn't the 5* resort it touts itself to be...and some of the pictures on there are quite unappealing! As for the dive center, I found some guest photos and noticed the open air toilet and the huts, not quite what we had in mind for a fun family vacation (3 kids under 5, including a baby!). The intercontinental sounds interesting, but we have no desire to tour about the city, just want to give the kids a chance to run through the beach before school starts. I saw the Millenium and so far that looks like the only option. Shukran ladies!

BG: thanks so much for the recommendations! There is currently a groupon or cobone deal for Sifawy but I'm always skeptical of hotels posted on discount sites. But having a review from someone in real life always makes me feel better! When you say " a short walk around the marina", how long did it take you to walk to the beach? Belinda: thanks for the link, looks quaint and cozy! Does the actual resort have a site where I can look at rooms, prices, options?

Thanks so much for all the suggestions ladies! TimTam, that pdf was great, loved to see both arabic and english names of fish. Apricot: hubby feels very strongly against farm-raised fish (he did loads of research and apparently came to the conclusion that wild-caught was safer and healthier to eat), so that cancels out any frozen fish options - even though those are more convenient. Unless someones seen wild-caught frozen fish anywhere?? Lovelylilies: we went wish Kingfish! The fish monger said it virtually had no bones and had firm flesh. There was barely any smell (more like the ocean - just like they say!) and clear eyes. I know because the chopped head was thrown in the bag with the fillets ... and I'm a bit squeamish with all those things, lol. I made a quick curry and it was great! One king fish cut into 1" fillets was enough for 2 meals worth of food :)

The easiest way to make it at home is to buy the pancakes ready made from a bakery. The best tasting ones are from the Mukhtar bakery in Sharjah. You can then stuff them with akkawi cheese or walnuts and bake them. Serve the syrup on the side. ETA : The walnut filling is a mixture of coarsely chopped walnuts, sugar, and orange blossom water. For the cheese filling buy akkawi cheese , slice it up , and soak it in water for a few hours occasionally draining and re-filling the bowl with water in order to get rid of the salt in the cheese edited by ItsAllAboutTheSugar on 21/07/2013 edited by ItsAllAboutTheSugar on 21/07/2013 Hubby mistakenly brought home a block of akkawi when I had asked for feta...at least now I know what to do with it!! Thanks so much! Do I shred the akkawi first?

I'm not sure where you live but we get them loose at the date souq in Sharjah. It's the street next to the produce souq, down the street from the slaughter shops. We've been getting load of ajwa dates from there this Ramadan, love them! Of course they have many stalls selling all different types. I don't know much they cost, of course you can always haggle a bit, but Hubby bought them, will find out the price and let you know insha'allah.

Bblue, thank you so much for you words of caution! Are you talking about agencies for full-time or part-time maids? I'm not looking to sponsor anyone or have a live-in maid, just someone who can come for a couple hours a day or few times a week. I'm having trouble even finding one agency in Sharjah and all the ones based out of Dubai won't come out here :( Thank you again for your advice ! Hi BintNizam - I tried endlessly over a one year period with part time agencies here in Sharjah - even one in Ajman just a few minutes away but as in 'Sharjah' would not come out. RoyalTop were excellent - could not highly recommend enough but became too expensive as 'extra' for travelling' to me. Now I clean my own home although with fault :-) Such a need for a decent maid service in Sharjah!!! I can feel your frustration and agree completely there is a huge demand for maids in Sharjah, but very few to supply! I am actually using a service now for part-time maids but the hours don't work for me (I need someone to come as early as possible in the morning). Besides the timings, I'm pleased with the work. If you are interested, let me know, I'll pass on the info!

I'm afraid I'm not much help as I've tested, tried and burned through a few appliance from the States ...including my beloved CHI flat iron :( But those were all plugged into convertors from here. My Kitchen Aid stand mixer is plugged into a converter from the States and so far is okay, but I'm afraid to use it much! When I do use it, the convertor gets really warm .... so, I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but not sure what! Hope you have better luck with that Vitamix...I hear those things are amazing!

Madge...thanks for the cold, hard truth :( I think you're right....nothing can really be done as I have no physical proof of what they told us upon move-in. But more importantly, it wouldn't really be worth it in the end. Quinn...my thoughts, and fears, exactly!! I have small children in the house...not to mention the safety of our neighbors! Lynette, good question...if you figure out the answer, let me know! ;) Seriously though, its not really an easy task but you just have to work your way around it. Here's all the ways I've tried/considered: 1. wear a baby front-carrier so your hands are free to push cart, pay bill, etc. I've never done this but I heard it can be hard picking up things from lower shelves when you're wearing baby. I guess you can ask a nice shopper around you to help with that? 2. Take baby in stroller and place items in buggy underneath the stroller. Personally, I don't feel comfortable doing this but have seen other people do it. 3. Take baby in stroller and pull a small basket with wheels (the ones with the long handles) or carry basket in hand. This is tricky if you are planning to buy a lot or heavy groceries. But for a few small items, its the best way. 4. Put baby in car seat and prop car seat on handles of shopping cart or place in side shopping cart. When the car seat is up on the handles, its a bit wobbly! In the States, all the grocery carts were compatible with car seats and they would just lock in. Here, the cart size differs from store to store. After trial and error , I know which stores I can do this with. Its the best option for me, because it keeps the cart open for groceries and baby is right in front of me, all in one! If you place the car seat inside the cart, of course you don't have as much space but you can always use the bottom of the cart too. 5. And the final and best option, drag along an older sibling, friend, spouse, maid, etc. to push the stroller while you push the grocery cart. I've tried dragging the cart behind me while pushing the stroller and I was a mess! Maybe I'm just not coordinated enough for it! But my baby is just about old enough to sit in the front of the cart (YAY!) so Im desperately looking for the cover so I can be free of this shopping-with-baby logistical drama, lol.

Oops, got caught up with Ramadan-prep and neglected to reply to the thread. Thanks for everyones help regarding vacation spots and even swimsuits...right now I just use a t-shirt and leggings and lets just say my post-partum tummy isn't happy with that! Quinn: I appreciate you being so forthcoming with your questions and like another poster said, maybe we as Muslim woman aren't open to enough dialogue concerning the obvious issues like covering, etc. But to be clear, there is only one reason Muslim women cover: because Allah commanded it in the Qur'an. Sure, there are many benefits that we know of (modesty, guarding desires, respect, safe from the sun, etc) but if you want to know The Why, well there you have it. So in that vein, I could care less about another mans desires, cuz believe you me I'm sure there are men who still get a thrill off of a covered woman. Also, this has nothing to do with my husband seeing as he isn't going to answer for my actions. And because I cover completely (face, hands, feet) I wouldn't swim in a mixed pool weather I was wearing a gigantic tarp or a skin-tight scuba suit. I go to a women's-only pool but wanted to try and enjoy the experience with my family, thus the point of starting this thread. Sorry to get so off topic here ! Thanks again (and I really hope I didn't start anything, lol. Im a relative newbie around these parts and would hate to start off on a bad foot!) I make my own decorations every year (with the kids' help) but wanted to try something different this year, and hopefully have them look nicer ;) Looking for things that actually say Ramadan or Eid on it like balloons, banners, etc. I've browsed thru websites, but would rather have a chance to buy it in person. Growing up in the west, I always assumed these items would be easy to find here, but I've yet to see them since moving here. Just thought I was looking in the wrong places.

Four Seasons Resort in Seychelles has villa rooms with private outdoor pools. DH booked one of two that are completely surrounded by jungle foliage and no overhead view. The resort serves halal beef, chicken and lamb. Four Seasons in Langkawi, Malaysia also has rooms with private pools. There are cheaper private villas with private outdoor pools in Bali, Indonesia. That sounds amazing...I'm checking it out, thanks!

If you are not willing to wear a burkini or swim in a mixed pool, you will have a really hard time finding what you are looking for. Even if you rented a private villa with a swimming pool, you might find that the house next to you is overlooking your pool. I have heard that there are private bungalows in the Maldives on the ocean. Does anyone know if this is true? Otherwise, you can go to the Caribbean. I have heard that there are totally secluded beaches there where you don't see another soul for miles. You could wear an oversized burkini and go swimming in the ocean there. If you'd like to know the exact location of these beaches, let me know and I will get the info for you. The Maldives are the best bet so far, but Im trying to find an all-inclusive package with decent flight times. Seems I waited too long and most of the decent itineraries are booked up (at least according to the travel agents we've spoken to). The Caribbean does sound wonderful, but if I was on a secluded beach you can trust that i'd be ripping off that burkini in no-time ;)
