We moved to UK a couple of weeks before Christmas. Our preferred schools have no place available but the admin staff of those schools were very helpful. Two of the schools' gave me good advice on what to do next. Another actually forwarded our information to the Council. The Council contacted us directly and let us know which schools have availability. We managed to get a place right before Christmas. DD's school is not within walking distance but less than 10 minutes drive. And rated Good too. I don't know about Secondary though. Where I am, top 11+ mark is required for Grammar schools. HTH. Good luck.

My favourite was Thai Time. They are located in the same building as the Safest Way supermarket and Funky Monkey. There is another Thai restaurant near Emirates Metro Station. Can't remember its name but pretty good as well. http://thaitimedubai.com/

She is in malaysia and it's a primary school starting with kindergarden classes. And doing british syllabus. The name or motto really depend on who is her target market; expat kids or Malaysian kids. The best International school in Malaysia for expat kids is Alice Smith and for Malaysians, I think ELC or Tenby. I read that many Malaysians who send their kids to the new established international schools find many of them are just another profit seeking organisations and not really up to scratch when it comes to international standard. <em>edited by blimey on 20/04/2015</em>

Surely there is no need for any of us to insult each other for the choice that we make in life? Or even insult the person that some of us hire to help us at home. Many of them do not have the same opportunities or chances offered to many of us. I am in England now. Some things are more expensive but a lot of things are cheaper here as well. Recruitment agents here are awesome. Definitely a lot of job possibilities .....at least in my line of work. And the best part for me is; my salary will be the same as other Brits. Hoorah! Even though there are many childcare options here, the timing are just difficult. That is the only thing that I am whining about at the moment. Life is full of choices. Personally, I think that as long as you have a home country that you could go back to and start or continue with your life, you are very lucky. <em>edited by blimey on 13/01/2015</em>

I used to work for one of those companies that dont have a labour contract, when my gratuity was calculated it was based on the latest issue of the employee's/ company handbook not on the original contract I signed. I am hoping the fact that the DIFC Employment Law actually state how the gratuity should be calculated will help me in my case. We are a regulated firm after all. So non compliance to the DIFC law is a serious matter. It is just sad that I have to resort to reporting them after all these years in order to get what is rightfully mine.

The employment contract that I signed, clearly stated that the salary is a base salary. The gratuity calculation was also stated in that contract. As we are a DIFC company, so no labour contract. DIFC employment law clearly stated how the gratuity should be calculated. After so many years of no increment and decided to move to another company, they finally gave me an increment last year. Increment to my base salary, not an allowance. However they have decided that they will come up with their own method to calculate the gratuity. It will be based on the salary for that particular number of year. X for 4 years, Y for 1 year. The difference in final amount is significant. The auditors reported on this but in a way that is less committing but will somehow save their a**s if or when any of the staff make a complaint. Currently serving my notice. Unfortunately, other than the off record conversation, I have no actual proof at the moment. So I have to wait till I get the final payment before I can do anything. Been with my company for over 5 years. After all that I have contributed, they turned out to be just another Ali Baba. edited by blimey on 10/10/2014 <em>edited by blimey on 10/10/2014</em>

We could still save and travel but decided that it is just a good time to go. DD's school close for no valid reason. New school introducing new systems that are not well planned causing so much headache and frustration among parents. Working on my notice now. Found out that my gratuity is not being calculated according to the UAE Law. After all that I did for the company all these years, I may have to report them for that. School came out with new refund policy ...hence, no deposit refund even though I gave sufficient notice. Moved out a month ago and still no news about my deposit. There are a bunch of Ali Baba out there and they do get away with it. Dubai has been good to us, so no regret. I will not enjoy paying high tax and will miss my wonderful helper but we definitely need fresh start and a bit sanity.

Blimey, to an extent you are right but you need to remember that you are talking about a maid..... does one really need years and years of expereience to clean a loo? Sure! What I am saying is; if you want to pay the average salary, get a fresh ones from outside. Don't ask for "at least 2 reference". As you said, no need experience to clean the loo after all.

Just my two cents :-) We hired our helper fresh from the Philippines. No experience in GCC. We paid her 1400 when she started, 1 day off and most public holidays. Her own room but no TV with Pinoy channel, no wifi in her room either. Just the basic. She eats whatever she cooks and buy for us. That was 6 years ago. She is just wonderful....not perfect as she makes mistakes here and there but never a headache or heartache to us. We trust her completely. As both DH and I work full time, we rely on her on a lot of things. We give her increment every year. 6 years on, of course her salary is a lot higher than the average salary being offered but not as high as some people on EW are paying. We are finally leaving Dubai. My issue is that many are looking for maids who have good experience, good reference but not willing to pay. Like us, maids are also looking for a better opportunity. There will be no promotion for them, just new family with less or more responsibilities. What would make a difference is a chance to save more. Isn't that one of the reasons for us to be here? Luckily for my wonderful helper, she is well known to the other moms at school. I am glad that she is going to work with a new family that I know and also known to our other friends. The point that I am trying to make is that if you are looking for maids with years of UAE / GCC experience and good recommendation/reference, you must be willing to pay more than the average. As I can bet you that most of the good ones will stick with the family who look after them as well as they look after the family unless the offer is too good not to go for.

I agree with SD. The bus tour is cheap and a good way to go around KL. I don't have a taxi driver to recommend but when I am there, I prefer the blue taxi. It is more expensive than the normal one but roomy, more comfortable and the drivers are usually nicer....at least from my experience. The normal ones, make sure you ask whether or not they use meter before you get in. I don't really have places to recommend. DD love Aquaria and KL Birds' Park. I still like to go to Central Market. There is nice water park like Sunway Lagoon but there is also a smaller and cheaper option like Desa Water Park. http://www.bohemiantravelers.com/2012/06/10-things-to-do-with-kids-in-kuala.html Mosquitoes love my DD a lot....poor girl. Do buy repellent and insect bite creams. They do help but unfortunately for my DD she is allergic to the mossies' bite. If the bite take too long to disappear and become swollen, just take your children to any clinic. They will prescribe an allergy syrup and wallah....gone! I bought one from pharmacy here and it didn't work at all. Anyway, enjoy your trip.

For movers, you could try Freight Work ([email protected]) and E-Movers (www.emoversuae.com) as well. Their quotes and DASA were not much different but we chose DASA for our move to UK as we like dealing with the Relocation Manager, Heather. For pets, you could try Alison, The Doghouse FZE (0504578874) and Move One ([email protected]). Move One is cheapest. Alison is more expensive but cheaper than DKC. Good luck. I had Pap Smear test done recently at Unicare, Burjuman using my ALICO card. Paid AED50 only. Give them a call - 04-3529292. Sounds like it is covered on your ALICO insurance then :) Yes but ALICO is not the best insurance provider in town either. I just think OP should give the medical centre a call and well, try her luck with her insurance card. <em>edited by blimey on 31/03/2014</em>

We are moving to Chippenham this summer. It is 2 stops away from Bristol. Bath is one of my favourite place in England but a bit too pricey for us. I would be looking for job either in Bristol or Swindon while DH will commute to London. From our rare visit to Bristol in the past, I have to admit that I don't like the place much but it does have one of the best university and there are quite a number of good rated state schools around the area. I suggest you use www.rightmove.co.uk to check both areas. Any property that caught your fancy will tell you how far it is from the train station and which schools are nearby. And you would be able to check the schools' OFSTED rating. And using google map, you would be able to tell how long your DH would have to drive from the house to his workplace. HTH.

When I first heard about the text message, I didn't like it either. However, reading the rationale behind the action, make me understand a bit. There are 239 people on board of MH370. They want to inform the family before they hear the news from the social network first. MAS also issued a statement prior to the PM's announcement. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/24/mh370-indian-ocean_n_5020832.html As for slandering the pilots, I don't understand why investigating them and covering all angles possible would equal to slandering. I have read so many comments on various forums wondering why the government didn't check the pilots' houses and interview their families sooner. I read one of the comment from FBI that it's a cultural thing....a soft approach. Most slandering I read, made mainly done by the Daily Mail. Personally, I never think it was a suicide because suicide in Malays (not saying Malaysians) are almost unheard of. From all the theories I read, I agree with one but until they find the black box, it will remain just a mere theory. <em>edited by blimey on 24/03/2014</em>

Hi - can I ask how you sent the documents back to the UK or do you not have to send anything if it's a renewal? I've had to apply for new baby's passport and I have to send the application and supporting documents back to UK so am searching for a reliable courier. Thanks It was a first time application for us. We used DHL. The Passport Office used the same when they couriered the passport and supporting document back to us.

DH applied for our DD in January. Took about 4 - 5 weeks for us. It would have been faster but DH didn't enclose certain supporting documents. The Liverpool Passport Office emailed him a letter requesting for the documents. We got the passport about a week after we couriered the documents. I was so impressed. I sent them email asking about the supporting documents that I didn't receive with the passport. The Liverpool Office replied to me within 5 minutes. You have no idea how shock I was ;-)

There are a lot of speculations and false alarm going around at the moment. There are no confirmed facts that the airline or government could actually give. Without debris or wreckage, they couldn't confirm that MH370 has really crashed. Are we looking or hoping for good news? I don't think we are that naive. We just want answers to what actually happened. As for the stolen passports, they only found out about it after they issued the passengers list. The airline didn't get flagged as they have no access to the Interpol database. Personally, I think it should have been the immigration job to do so. The Interpol official did however say that only a handful countries actually use their database. So, obviously this will be something that many countries need to work on ASAP.

I got 50% increment last year but we are still leaving as our view of Dubai have changed following the closure of DD's school. You always have to weight your pros and cons here unfortunately. When your cons are heavier, you know that it is time to make your exit plan. If employers are taking increase in rent and school fee into their consideration when revising their remuneration structure, then it should apply to all their employees and not the circumstance of any individual employee. <em>edited by blimey on 26/02/2014</em>

Small class, less than 10. Well, how many parents can afford 90K anyway? The Head Teacher is accessible even at drop off time .... and there are even coffee/tea and cakes for parents ;-)

It is hard for us to find a good maid and it is equally hard for many maids to find a good employer as well. We are leaving in the summer and will have to let ours go. Still many months till summer and already I am anxious for her. Hoping that she will find a new family that will appreciate her as much as we do. Hoping that she will get at least the same salary or more. Hoping the employer will let her eat what they eat or at least give her food allowance. Hoping the child or children and/or pet will like and even love her like ours do. All these are in my mind. She might be my employee and what happen to her in the future will not affect us in any way but I can't help feeling that if I know she will be alright, then I can leave Dubai in peace. She is in no way perfect but where it matters, she is. I am not advertising but I just want to say that good maids are out there just as good employers are out there for them too ;-) Does luck has anything to do with it? I honestly don't know.

So, instead of closing the chapter.......PLEASE SUPPORT US TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. Blimey - how can we offer support? is there a petition? A truly wonderful school and devastating for staff and students alike. Thanks. Yes, it is a wonderful school and community. Most if not all parents have submitted our petition to the KHDA. The children will also write and submit their letters. Unlike GEMS, we do not know the schools' owner other than viewing them as Board of Governor. In 9 years, the fees have only been increased twice and at a very small percentage. So, we could understand if they desire more and are willingly (if not happily) prepared to accommodate that. What we are worry about is what we don't know. So, the approach is very tricky unfortunately. Maybe if you could do the following: 1. Like the Facebook page SOS English College Primary School and post your support 2. Follow the Twitter account @ECParent – retweet messages and add your own 3. Please add your comments to Dubai 92's CatBoy and GeordieBird who are inviting you to comment on their FaceBook page https://www.facebook.com/cbgbshow Thank you in advance ladies. Personally, I would opt for Penang....and not just because I am a Penangite. I think you will have more things to do there.....Adventure Zone, Penang Natural Park, Butterfly Farm, Botanical garden, ferry ride, Penang Hill, tour to the temples, etc. The food in Penang are also a much much better option and a lot cheaper and tastier. If you stay at Parkroyal Penang Resort, they have kids' club and horse riding. Anyway, even if it rains in Penang.....you can still step out.

No, there is no change in the Management of the school. The school's fees had finally increased by 4% last year after no change in so many years. I don't think any parent begrudge them that increase as we could see that many of the facilities need to be improved. The school unfortunately need more in order to sustain. Looking at fees comparison with other schools, I personally do not think "hungry for profit" is the issue. Even with the increase that they are hoping to get from us, they are still a lot cheaper than many of the other schools. So, fingers crossed....our petitions for the school to remain open will be approved.

Your info was really useful, thanks Teftee. I obtained the entry permit for my maid yesterday and now will book flight to Oman. Based on the pink slip, it appears to be valid for 60 days, thus I assume we have to do her flight within 60 days, or do we still have to do this before her tourist visa expires? Appreciate anyone's advice on this so I don't let it go too long if there are any related issues. Also, once she is back, do we just proceed straight away with the medicals (she is Filipina) or do we need to do anything else before the medicals? TIA My maid left the country the day before her tourist visa expired. She exit as normal....do not show the pink slip. She only show the pink slip at the immigration counter. Only then we did her medical and visa process. You don't have to do it right away of course as you do have 60 days to do it ;-)

Nice one. Here, I don't think I develop any accent as many people would guess that I am either a Malaysian or Singaporean the moment they heard me talking. Did go home with American and London accents after living in both places for 2 years but back to normal almost immediately. I won't use LAH here but the moment I landed in KLIA....it will come out naturally ;-) I once had a colleague who speak with American accent. She told me that she is not American and has never live in America. She did however study in American University of Sharjah.
