My question mainly is if you are british and muslim but you dont want your assets etc divided according Shariah law, can I have a UK compliant will so that I get to specify who gets what, and will it still be legally recognised here? Hope this makes sense..... edited by LMAO-DXB on 09/09/2013 As far I know, this Shariah law will only apply to your assets in the UAE, not abroad. Anything that you don't want to be divided according to Shariah law (faraid?), don't keep here.

DH is so upset and has been following the updates on FB since he came back from his cycling this morning. Roy was well known among the triathletes here. Apparently there was a support car which followed the cyclists from behind too when the accident happened. The other two cyclists have minor injuries. http://www.tridubai.org/ DH was also hit by a car while cycling this year. Luckily for us, his injuries was minor. He chose to cycle only on the cycling tracks these days. Just too dangerous out there. edited by blimey on 06/09/2013

Most probably. They advertised it as Du Arena but it is in Yas Island. The cheapest Rotana's package for Golden Circle is AED1069 + 16% tax (room + 2 tickets + breakfast). GC ticket on its own is AED450. I have never been there. Do I need transport from the hotel or can I walk? Is it easy to get taxi after the concert?

Thank you everyone for the advise. I guess what I really need to know is that once all our visas are cancelled how much time do we have to get a visa for our maid before she has to exit? Same as you, she will have 30 days to exit once the visa is cancelled. When DH resigned and contemplates whether to stay or go back to UK, we faced similar issue with our maid. We ended up sending her back home and paid her family to bring her back on visit visa once DH made up his mind. I didn't think I could sponsor her as our tenancy contract was not under my name and was about to expire as well. We did consider sending her to Kish but just couldn't bring ourselves to do it in the end.

Thanks for posting Busybee. My next question is, did they mention an insurance company that deals in private health insurance for maids? I'm guessing Axa is one but if you can remember anyone that they mentioned it would help. Thanks again http://www.noortakaful.com/medical/noor-popular-domestic-aid-medical.aspx

Coffeebean, there is also a possibility that the bank's compliance dept didn't approve your account opening. Many East Africa countries are unfortunately considered high risk jurisdiction. They usually need an enhanced due diligence and require senior management approval. But how about your husband? Surely he has one.

I can't tell you whether or not you will ever find love again but one thing I am sure of....it's better to be on your own than be with a man who doesn't appreciate you. Perhaps, rather than looking for a new love... maybe this is a good time to get to know yourself again and try to enjoy being on your own....at least for now ;-) http://elitedaily.com/life/be-your-own-best-friend-the-cure-for-loneliness/ Anyway, I am a firm believer that good things happen when you least expected. My daughter is enjoying her summer camp there this week. Don't ask me about the activities as she only talk about the pizza that she made on Sunday, the face painting, the trampoline and the 2 new friends that she plays with. All I can say is that she is happy to wake up early to get ready and come back feeling tired but again..happy. Nevertheless, her reaction could be because we have only send her to two summer camps so far instead of every week and to two different one as well.

Nice place Chippenham, I used to be project team coordinator for the Chippenham and villages partnership there! Bit higher on the crime scale than likes of Wootton Bassett, etc but still lower than most places! Wiltshire is one of the safest counties. Honestly, you just have to make the most of it, your world won't end...promise it is nice! There is even the gorgeous La Flambé restaurant in nearby Sutton Benger...When you fancy a night out! Yes, my MIL commented the same about the crime rate unfortunately. Anyway, I hope not to wake up and find my thread disappeared. One thing that really cheer me up about the possibility of the move is the fact that whatever remuneration I will get in UK, it will be based on my qualification and experience and nothing to do with my nationality.

Thanks again Elmpark. I will keep your offer in mind for future. We will be in Chippenham. I actually quite like it there. Still living might be different from visiting ;-) I am still hoping that the move will not be realized but at least for the next few weeks, I could keep my mind open to the option rather than treating it as if our world will collapse all together. We don't have mortgage in UK but we do in Malaysia. So it does add up.

Thanks Elmpark. You know what, Wiltshire is where I want to be. I am very optimistic that I could get a job either in Swindon or Bristol. We don't have a house there but DH's parents have an empty house that they might let us stay for free or at least cheap rent. And without her nanny, I think DD would be happy to stay with her grandparents after school once I start working. I don't know, maybe we are doing our calculations all wrong. Maybe DH needs to have a chat with his friends there. Thank you again. I am feeling a bit less wary now. I just need to convince DH about the commute ;-)

Thank you ladies. We commuted from Sutton to London for 2 years more than 10 years ago. It was not bad but we don't have kid then. So, life was pretty comfortable if not great. I don't miss chasing after tubes and trains though. Now there are school and childcare (and pet) to consider that living and working closer to where my parents in laws are, are preferable. The salary would be lower than in London but my commute time would be just 15 - 20 minutes. And there are quite a number of state schools with good and outstanding ratings there too especially when being non-denomination is a must. Since it is he who want to move, maybe it is okay to make him suffer the long commute time ;-) Even without housing and school perks, we do enjoy great life in Dubai if not luxurious. So, I am very nervous if this move does take place. Still, I will admit that I would rather opt for a move to UK than Doha.

DH is seriously contemplating a move back to UK. We are trying to be realistic about our salary expectation but dear God....we can't seem to come up with a good enough salary that could convince us that we would have a nice enough lifestyle and could continue to save. DH could get 50 - 60K...I am not sure how much I could earn as most managerial role in my profession there require legal qualification which I don't have. So, I feel I need to be conservative and looking at 30-50K. We have 1 child. So, I will not look at working for the first few months. Is it bad that we think 80 - 90K between us might not be enough? We live in a villa with a tiny garden here. I want so much to live in a house with a garden there. Is it wishful thinking? DH's job would most probably be in London but I would love to live down south near his family instead. Do you think 1hr 20 min daily commute by train would be too much for DH? By the way, does anybody know whether the financial requirement for spouse visa refer strictly to income or do you think it's possible to use saving during the application process? Otherwise, we could not apply for the spouse visa until DH is employed. TIA for any feedback or suggestion.

I am sorry but surely it is not fair to compare NHS, government funded hospitals, to private hospitals in Dubai or anywhere else in the world? I could never compare government hospitals in Malaysia to the private ones as the services delivered and their facilities are so different. But for those who can't afford private hospitals, government hospitals are a blessing. Oh, I do get nervous every time my husband bring up "moving back to UK" topic but I also remember that no matter how much I love our life here in Dubai, it is only good if you have a good job, can afford the school, have good health coverage and can save for future. Without any of those, I think UK still look pretty good even with all her flaws. And based on so many stories that we have read here, when things go wrong (as they do sometimes), it is still good to have a home country to go to where you can try to revive your life again. Some people don't even have that choice. edited by blimey on 02/07/2013

Sorry Diyas. I don't know the answer to it as my DD is not Year 3 yet. As the policy is first come, first serve, I assume that your child could participate in as many activities as he/she interested in. From my conversation with the other moms previously, it usually depend on the activities offered for that term and the ages group that the activities open to. Hopefully other moms could help you on this one.

Can anyone whose child is attending EC primary answer the following please .... - understand that there is no transport for primary . How do you manage school runs ? - do you use any private transport services ? are they reliable ? what are the costs? - choice for afterschool activity ? how many activities will a child participate in normally? - any paid activities available for primary from external providers - Thursdays end earlier ... are there activites for that day ? Thank you 1. There is transport service as I see the school buses every morning. You however have to liaise with the bus company directly instead of through school. A manager or representative is at the school's gate every morning during drop off time. No idea about the cost or reliability though as I don't use the service. 2. After school activities only available from Y3 upward. http://www.englishcollegeprimary.ac.ae/english-college-primary-school/curriculum/extra-curricular-activities 3. You can check out the list of activities for this term from this link: http://www.englishcollegeprimary.ac.ae/english-college-primary-school/curriculum/extra-curricular-activities/term-3-extra-curricular-activities 4. As far as I know there is none on Thursday as they are very strict about the kids being picked up sharp at 12.30pm on that day. I could be wrong though. HTH.

Thank you ladies, this is really helpful. What are the facilities like? Safa has great facilities, do they compare? Blimey, do you feel that English College is more academic? What is the pastoral care like? Are the children well supported for example, regarding learning support, behaviour etc, my LO is bright but is also a bit of a character and one of the younger ones in the year, how well are they supported? I apologise for all the questions. I am lucky I have a choice of two schools!! Thank you :-) When DD was at Safa, it was at the old venue with almost no facility. PTA does bake sales all the time to buy this and that. Now they even has summer camp run from there. I have no complain about ECP facilities. On the other hand, most parents feel that EC does need some upgrade. Again, limited learning support at Safa's old venue but I am sure that has been rectified now. Personally I think Safa's FS is much better but some parents get a bit worry when they start Y1. A few of DD's former classmates moved to another schools once a place come up, mainly to JESS, JPS and Kings. If your child have special needs requirement, I think Safa has better support than ECP. In ECP, it depends on the teacher that the child get. On the other hand, if your child is weak on certain subject as he/she moves up the year, I know from the other mothers' experience that ECP and EC definitely provide extra support to ensure your child will not be left behind. I remember at the end of last school year, all the parents went to meet the Y1 teacher. They told us what we should expect the children would be able to do by the time they leave Y1. Thinking of our children ability at FS2, we have a bit difficulties in imagining that our children would be able to reach that set target. Boy, I can tell you all parents ......at least in my DD's class, can't stop talking about how proud we are with their progress. Things that they do at home on their own initiatives (not homework!) just blow your mind. As all my contacts at Safa have also left Safa, I can't really say that DD's progress is due to EC as I have nobody from Safa to compare her to ;-) I am happy with EC's pastoral care but won't criticize Safa either due to its lack of facilities back then. From my experience, both Safa and EC have similar method of "punishing" and rewarding behavior. I am only aware of 1 child who regularly visit the Head Teacher's office but I honestly have not heard any complaint from his parents either. The reason why you hardly ever get any feedback on ECP or EC is that parents are pretty happy. Any concern that any parent might have, they address it directly to the teacher or if it is concerning the school, directly to the Head Teacher or through the class mom. I honestly have never heard any parent bitching about the school, teacher or admin. ECP is not perfect for sure as I myself have a few things here and there that bug me occasionally but nothing that raise my BP or causing me to look for another school to move DD to. Yes britchick4, I know how you feel about the lack of information on EC. We were happy with DD's progress as Safa but when a place become available, we moved her to EC. She did really well in FS1 and was progressing so well in FS2 as well, consistently got Star of the week. When we first moved her to EC, we did go through a period of doubt whether or not we made the right decision. FS2 in Safa did so much more work compare to FS2 at EC. Despite her lack of "Star of the week" at EC, I have to say that we are very happy with her development especially this school year. All her classmates are so competitive and work really hard individually and as a team (house point). As DD was only at Safa for a short period of time, I can't really tell you which one to choose especially now that Safa is under a different management.. I like both Mrs. Knight and Mr. Johnston as the head teacher. The children love them. Personally, all our initial anxiety about whether or not EC is a good school for DD, has disappeared as I have talked with many moms with children who started at ECP and now either at EC or in university. Their children progress over the years have convinced us that we did indeed make the right decision and if she works hard as she is now, she will do well in EC as well. Good luck with whichever decision you make. edited by blimey on 10/06/2013

Sandy, Most people we know, ourselves included, have a regular private driver on speed dial who we just call whenever we need him. There are loads of these guys here, we've been using ours for 4 years, and he's brilliant, always on time and a good driver. A lot of families use this service to get their children to & from school as well. Doha isn't very big, just very congested, so the fares are not excessive. Taxis are cheaper but very unreliable. I am relief to know about the private drivers. DH is contemplating a move to Doha and I am having a nervous breakdown as there are so many things to think about.....school for DD, where to live that will be convenience for DH to go to work and DD to go to school and not to mention, what is the possibility for me to secure a new job in Doha. We are going to Doha next week for a day or so. I don't think we will have time to check any school but would love to at least get a grip as to what life would be life if we make this move. Would appreciate if someone could suggest areas that we should look at that would be most convenience to schools as I don't drive. We currently live in Jumeirah....less than 10 minutes drive to both DD's school and my work place. I work in DIFC....so hoping that I could find something similar at QIFC. TIA.

We were contemplating moving back to UK recently. Hence, did a bit of search for good state schools. For schools, I used the good schools guide website to find state schools with Ofsted's good and outstanding ratings. I then used rightmove.co.uk website to search for properties in areas that we are interested in. From that the chosen property, I could check which schools are nearby. If I am not mistaken, the good school guide also include information whether the schools have special need support or not. You can even subscribe to their website for a month for only 10 quid, I think. HTH. edited by blimey on 23/05/2013

The first and most valuable lesson I learned as a student in USA many years ago was how to say NO! without feeling guilty about it. Very difficult at first but the more I say it, the better I feel and the less guilty I feel about it. A lot of people I know are scared to say NO and would rather suffer from having to do things that they really don't want to do or lie as they are worried that a plain NO will hurt others feeling and their relationship or friendship will be affected as a result. Personally, I think family or friends who get offended and stay away as a result just because I give them an honest NO are not really good family or friends to begin with.

Ok so I am not going crazy lol. J3 Is a ladies only gym, and has I think some more facilities but doesn't differ much from Mazaya as I recall. They said there was a special offer for one month and then it was "i think" 6000 aed per 6 months... I remember that I missed their AED199 promotion when I joined at Mazaya. So, I signed up for the AED249 instead. After 1 year, I was dreading about what they are going to charge me but they ended up charging me the same. It's really strange if they charge such a different rate in their other branch.

I went in the other day and they were saying it was something like 6000 aed for 6 months. No that must have been a misquote. I was quoted between 2-300 monthly for 3-6 months. And then I was able to use all the facilities.. If this is the one in the new J3 mall; that's not what they told me; it was shockingly expensive. I thought it would be great as it's walking distance Weird, that's not what I was quoted... That is weird indeed as I am a member at Mazaya center and I pay AED250 monthly. I have access to all the gym equipment and can participate in all the exercise classes. Is there anything extra special at J3 mall?

Private schools here and in another countries are completely different. Here, expat children do not have state school option to begin with. Other that the availability, the private schools chosen do depend on the parents' income and for the lucky ones, remuneration packages. The opportunities available for our children these days are not the same as the ones we have when we were their age. At the same times, their access to those opportunities still depend on what their parents can or cannot afford. Personally, I would not send my DD on expensive school trips to Caribbean island or ski in Switzerland but the ones with education value and exposure as described by Pikachu, I would definitely consider. edited by blimey on 20/03/2013

In my early 20s and currently have no desire whatsoever for children. However I assume that by the time I'm 30 the maternal instinct will kick in? But this thread is making me question that assumption... Not necessarily. I have two child free friends who are happy with their status. Both told me that if one day they wake up and suddenly feeling broody, they will just adopt. I also have a childless friend who have accepted that she is not meant to be a mother and chose not to adopt but focus on her pets. I spent years longing for children. After 6 years of marriage, I was blessed with one and I love her to bits. I never envy my child free friends' lifestyle, don't miss my life pre motherhood but do I want to go through the pregnancy, maternity, terrible two experience again? NO....THANKS!

We subscribed for it recently. Personally I think the assessment are good as they would be able to identify your kids' weak areas. Depending on your kids' age, you will have to monitor and encourage them to do it. DD is only 6. She doesn't really like doing the exercise as they are repetitive and she gets bored after question 5 and lost concentration on the next 5 questions. She told me that she prefers to learn using books instead. Still in the initial stage though. Maybe she will use more in the summer.

Back at home, we have a free agency called Malaysian American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) to help students who are interested to further studies in the USA. I used them many many years ago. I don't know whether they have anything similar here. Anyway, maybe you can use their website as a guideline on how to proceed. http://www.macee.org.my/educationusa-worldwide/ https://www.educationusa.info/ You can easily access the Ivy Leagues universities' websites and check their admission criteria. My boss' son finished his school with pretty good CGPA but not high enough (>3.75 - 4.0) for the ones that he really wanted to go to. Anyway, he is hoping to use his Freshman grades to transfer to his preferred university. Good luck!

I've been interviewing maids (or sometimes the other way around, ja!) and it seems there is a pattern with all the candidates: they work for British families, they want 2.300 dhs and they dont know how to cook! seriously, what is going on?????? Most of my friends' maids don't cook as my friends love and prefer to cook themselves. Their maids either eat what they cooked or cook their own food separately. My maid and I are from the same region, hence we eat similar food and DH is used to our food. So, she cooks dinner for all of us. edited by blimey on 23/01/2013

To LaLaLayla: In my fantasies I do this, but that would end up working against me and the kids. Deportation would follow, and if I think he'd be angry now, I can't imagine the rage I'd be facing when he got out of prison! And of course, I wouldn't want the kids to have a father in jail.. A guy I know is divorcing his wife because she cheated on him. After the devastation of finding about the affair, he filed for the divorce. I am not sure what reason he cited but not, adultery. Why? Because he thinks of their children. She broke his heart but she is still their mother. He considered all the years of wonderful married life they had shared and gave her a good settlement that allows her to remain here so that they could share custody of the children. I do not have advice whether you should stay or go but I honestly do not think putting your husband in jail over the affair will resolve anything other than giving a small and temporary satisfaction to yourself.

DH leaned over about an hour in and said "is it going to be all singing, the whole way through?". Yes dear :) *eye roll* That's why I went with gf. I don't think DH will be able to watch any future movies with Russel Crowe or Hugh Jackman in it otherwise ;-)

I went with my gf. I have watched both Les Mis and Mamma Mia on Broadway and I have watched both movies. The experiences were just different. I won't say it's a great movie as Russel Crowe and Hugh Jackman's singing were quite excruciating but I enjoyed the movie nevertheless. Tears still flow ;-)

My boss' 1st child is already in ASD but still couldn't get a KG1 place for his 2nd child. They are not American. The school set certain criteria when they allocate spot for the new students.

DD has been taking swimming lessons with Desert Sport for the past 3 terms. She took lesson from other company before but she got really nervous and dreaded swimming lessons. Not anymore! We are very happy with her progress.
