Jacklyn Smith or Sophia Loren. They both look so awesome at their age....aging is definitely not something to be fear of ;) Depends on how much work you get done, I suppose. ;) ** Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D Really?? It's so hard to pinpoint a celebrity that actually grow old without getting any work done on them :( I like the late Katherine Hepburn too. Ahh...that's too bad.

Is it really that bad?! I thought I was ready but this thread is putting me off. Can anyone elaborate on the good stuff? My sister went thru a very difficult delivery that her DH who was in the delivery room with her told her that he would totally understand if she doesn't want to have another one. My sister enjoys her motherhood so much and is already planning for another one now that her DS is almost two. Me? Easy pregnancy, easy delivery but DH and I agree almost right away that we are happy with just ONE!

Thanks ladies, yes dikane some interesting posts out there. I was blunt in saying pros and cons but the truth is one has to decide. Your life changes drastically with kids and my parents sell it so positively but i want some impartial advise. Thank you all for your continuing advise. My friend wanted a baby a while back but for all the wrong reasons. In the end, she looked deep inside her and asked herself a series of question and finally managed to admit to herself that she actually does not want to have a baby as she doesn't want to change her lifestyle. I have several friends who openly admit that they are not interested to be a mom. Not every woman is borned with maternal instinct. Don't have a child to oblige to other people's expectation.

I tried to open a subject with my maid about part time job recently. She told me...."Don't worry, I won't be doing that. I knew of a maid from building X back in Palm J who got caught and jailed for 2 months before get deported." I guess I am lucky that my maid is wise and cherish her Friday. To OP, my maid went for her holiday last December. It was really hard for me as I work full time. After her school hours, she stayed at a nursery not far from my house. As I hate ironing, I get an agency maid to come to my house once or twice a week to do it. It's not easy but it's doable.

We went there more than 2 years ago, so I can't remember the website that we used. We rented a 2 bedroom apartment for a week and stayed among the Venetian instead of the tourist area. Can't remember the exact area but I think it was the Jewish Ghetto, Cannaregio. It was near Santa Maria dei Miracoli. It was great experience. We didnt cook other than preparing food for DD who was 18 months then. The place that we stayed was within walking distance to the water bus. We used the bus a bit but walked almost everywhere. We found some good restaurants but I would say that Venice really doesn't represent Italy when it comes to good food. My only regret was I didnt get to see Brad Pitt who was there at that same time :( Anyway, you can easily do search on holiday apartment for rental. <em>edited by blimey on 01/04/2011</em>

The response from the hotel on Arabian Business: "Posted by: Starwood Hotels and Resorts Wednesday, 30 March 2011 5:09 PM[UAE'> - Canada The circumstances in June 2008 concerning Alicia Gali, a former employee of the Le Mridien Al Aqah hotel, were deplorable. While the hotel worked diligently on Ms. Gali?s behalf, the authorities investigated and prosecuted the case under the local laws. Additionally, the men involved were also prosecuted and each served prison terms before being deported. As for Ms. Gali?s lawsuit, we disagree with the allegations. The hotel management provided support and assistance to Ms. Gali and her family throughout that time including assisting with medical support, arranging for financial support, assistance with the investigation, liaising with her representative Australian embassy and coordinating and arranging affairs with her family in Australia. As this matter is part of an open investigation, we cannot comment further at this time. The safety and security of our associates and guests continues to be a paramount priority. My old saucony cost me 300 plus. I am pretty sure you could get NIKE cross trainer for less than 300. Have you tried the sport shops like Go Sport and NIKE? A proper trainer make a lot of different during exercise ;)

Thanks ladies. @ Abby: can you recommend a hotel in Kota? When I went to Kota Kinabalu with DH and DD (1y.o then), we stayed at Karambunai. It's a bit isolated and we hardly leave the hotel during that one week. I had a good massage and DH played golf on his own. DD love the beach. http://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?sid=8fb7074dbfdad303bed86efc6e6d5b0e;class_interval=1;idf=1;offset=0;score_min=0;si=ai%2Cco%2Cci%2Cre%2Cdi;ss_all=0;;city=-2404760;origin=disamb;srhash=2525255101;srpos=1 And Shang ri la also have good reputations in Malaysia http://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?sid=8fb7074dbfdad303bed86efc6e6d5b0e;city=-2404760;class_interval=1;country=my;idf=1;radius=15;score_min=0;si=ai%2Cco%2Cci%2Cre%2Cdi;ss_all=0;ssb=empty;offset=0;rows=20 Btw, Kota Kinabalu is not an island in Sabah. It is the capital city of Sabah. If you fancy an island in Sabah, it would be Sipadan Island ;)

I placed ads in the paper and EW. I got hundreds of calls and I am being interviewed each time by the Philipinas 1) what's my nationality? 2) where I live? 3) my family info etc.. all these before I ask any questions. and out of hundreds only 2 showed up for the interview and did not turn out well... what should I do? should I keep on advertising or go through the agency route I am exhausted:( I interviewed a Filipina who advertised on EW once and never want to do it again. My previous and current maids had no dubai experience. Hence no reference. And yet, I had no REAL issue with both of them. The previous one I hired thru an agency and worked with me for almost 2 years. The current one, I hired thru her sister who worked in a salon that I used to go to and is on her 3rd year. It's probably riskier as they have no reference, hence not everybody cup of tea. But personally, if my current one decided to leave, i would hire a fresh to dubai again.

Depending on your location/catchment, you could take her to one of these health centre. When you click the area, you will see the services provided and the fees charged. I think it is free if she has a health card and go to certain hospitals. Not sure.....so far my maid only go to the dentist. http://www.dha.gov.ae/en/Facilities/HealthCenters/Pages/default.aspx

I ordered from them several times and always get my order in less than a week. Have you tried emailing them or check with the post office branch where your post box is located? As the packages are always so small, the post office always put them directly inside my post box. They have such a prompt service, that's why I recommend them here. I really hope you will get your package soon.

Can your maid prove that she has gone thru the necessary training as required by the Philippines govt? If not, she might have problem exiting the country unless she come to dubai with visit visa or thru other SEA country (employment visa). My boss used DNATA ....employment visa and she came via Malaysia as his maid had not gone thru any required training. I brought my maid to Dubai using visit visa. I used one of the agencies that you could easily find in Karama (Karama Centre / Al Attar Centre) on Kuwaiti Street. They charge about AED3300 for ticket, visit visa and admin. When your maid is here, you can process her employment visa yourself within 2 months period. Someone mentioned here b4 that they used one of the employment agencies in Dubai as it is apparently cheaper but I really don't know about it. Maybe somebody would comment on that later. HTH. Good luck.

Ladybird Nursery on Street 25 A, Off Al Wasl Road (http://www.ladybirdnursery.ae/) and Little Wings International Nursery (http://www.lwi-nursery.com). Ladybird timing is until 1.30pm I think and Little Wings is until about 6pm. If you come from Trade Ctr side, you will take Exit 49 after Mazaya Ctr and if you come from MOE side, you would take Safa Park Exit to drop your kid off and very easy from both nursery to go to Horizon School. I think there is one nursery that is closer to Horizon but I have only seen it from far, so don't have the name. HTH. <em>edited by blimey on 24/03/2011</em>

I find it sad that at times this is almost like a brainwashing on this site. Everyone trying to force those who don't like Dubai into a forced love. The relentless attack on those of us who don't like it is amazing. I think it works both way, no? There are ppl who hate Dubai and look at ppl who love Dubai as desperate, probably come from an awful country to begin with, materialistic as they chose to be here instead of with family back in their country, etc. Like I said, I neither love nor hate Dubai. The thing that I don't get it is ppl who hates it and had left and enjoying their life in their home or new country but still keep on coming to bash dubai. When my time come, I just bid goodbye to friends, leave and that's it. Like everywhere I had been to, somethings are good, somethings are not. <em>edited by blimey on 24/03/2011</em>

Expat life is obviously not everybody cup of tea. Or maybe just the culture and restriction not to mention the weather in certain countries make it so much harder for some people to adjust and have the best what the countries have to offer. And maybe some people come from a smaller city or town in their countries, hence life in a city like Dubai is considered hectic. Some people come from a close knit family and like to be surrounded by everybody and everything that is dear and familiar. DH and I only get salary here....no housing, no school fees. We don't do brunches, no branded stuff, big villa or fancy cars. The salary I get here..... in my country, I would have to be a very senior manager to get it and in UK...well, after the tax of a pretty good salary. DH might be able to get the same salary in UK but definitely not an after tax salary. Life both in KL and London where our jobs would be, would be hectier than our life here. We would spend our weekdays either stuck in the traffic or chasing trains and undergrounds. Life in both KL and London would mean no family and free babysitter either as our families live in different part of the countries. So for DH and I, our family mean the three of us. As long as we are together, then we are home.... wherever it is. Like I said in my previous post, I am not in love with Dubai and I don't hate it. I am not oblivious to Dubai's imperfection but life is what you make of it at the end of the day ;) "Man is fond of counting his troubles, but he does not count his joys. If he counted them up as he ought to, he would see that every lot has enough happiness provided for it." ~Fyodor Dostoevsky <em>edited by blimey on 23/03/2011</em>

I have enjoyed my student life in America, lived and worked in London and live and work in Dubai. I have travelled to various countries and my conclusion is, no one place is perfect. It is so easy to focus on the bad stuff and be oblivious to what the place offers and try to make the best out of your experience in that place. I guess I have never actually been to any place in the world where I feel the need to list down all the things that I hate about it. I don't have many friends here, no relatives and yet I am not lonely. Just wish I have more time to do stuff. Anyway, good luck Mamaballs. I am sure you would be happier once you are at home.

does metro go directly to ibn battuta like MOE or a cab is required? edited by manubhadauria on 21/03/2011 just cross the road :) lol - yes... that should be "just cross the multi-lane bus station, then the 4 lane road with dodgy pedestrian phase and then negotiate the lawned area where there are no paths to get to the entrance of the mall!" Great with a buggy! I did Dubai Mall the other day and tbh, the feeder bus is fabulous. It's right outside the Metro station and takes about 3 minutes to drop you off at the mall. MotE is by far the easiest. True...I did indeed omit that fact. No cab require though. And agree MOE is the easiest and safer.

But then, restaurants would be jam-packed at sunset except for non-halal restaurants. That's true if you are in KL esp on Friday and Saturday. There are a lot of ramadan buffet offers in hotels....pretty cheap compares to here. I would apologize in advance on behalf of the ugly malaysians that you would encounter if you decide to go to one of this buffet ;) The buffet itself usually pretty good malay food. Another thing is....if you are in KL 2 weeks before Eid, weekend could be really awful to go anywhere. Just avoid Masjid Jamek, Jalan Masjid India and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman areas completely at weekend. If you are in KL or Petaling Jaya areas don't forget to try Malaysian style cafes like Papa Rich (my fav) and Kopitiam. <em>edited by blimey on 21/03/2011</em>

Well, the ones that I know start at the age of 6 or 7. Usually they would do half day and then full like adult. The "angpow / eid money" at the end of ramadan is a good motivator ;) Btw, if you are there until the 1st day of Eid itself, you could drop by at the Prime Minister's main residence in Putrajaya for his open house. But the queue could be horrendous though. If you are staying at a small town, you might even get invited to the muslim's open house. KL residents would be a bit wary of strangers these days.

Yeah...Malaysian muslims don't get offended if you drink or eat in front of them. The children might stare a bit...not at you, but at the food and drinks ;) Only Malay restaurants are closed until about 4.00pm. If you are there during Ramadan, try to go to Pasar Ramadan which usually starts about 3pm. A lot of authentic traditional dishes are sold there that you would find hard to get it at any other time of the year. But try to choose stalls that have a lot of customers as this is also the time of the year where some ppl just want to make easy money even if they don't cook well :(

Women and insecurities ;) I am a size 8...sometimes 10. Whenever I go to my home country, I do feel big. So many girls who are smaller than me and they are not anorexic or bulimic looking either. I guess some women would say they have boyish figure ;) I love how my aerobic instructor look, envious of her flat tummy and was completely shock to find out that she is 6kg heavier than me. She is slightly taller of course. Anyway when I told her how much I want to have her flat and tone tummy, her response was.....well for a start, I don't have kid!! Funnily, new ppl sometimes thought I was the class instructor :) Personally, I do not want to look like any of the new generation super models. Prefer the super models of Cindy Crawford time. Love Kelly Brook's curvy body but no matter what I do, there is no chance in ****, I would ever have that body. Will be interesting to see how her post baby body would look like though. My point is, stop looking at other women......just look at the mirror and feel happy with the gorgeous woman looking back right at you!! <em>edited by blimey on 20/03/2011</em>

I had a chat with our maid and turns out she borrowed 2k dh from a Filipina moneylender in Satwa who is charging her 15% a month which works out about 180% a year. It meant she was paying 300dh a month! She missed a few payments and owed 2500dh. As she'd already paid 900dh interest I gave her 2k and said not to pay anymore than that but the moneylender is still demanding another 500dh. She also borrowed 100dh from another maid on the street who wanted 150dh back. I gave her 100dh to pay and say she was not paying any interest. Do you know whether your maid give the lender her passport or labour ID when she borrowed the money? My maid told me a lot of the maids are doing this. And then, when they need to borrow more money from the lender, they would ask another maid for her passport / labour card to give to the lender for the new debt. <em>edited by blimey on 19/03/2011</em>

It's interesting to hear the comments about racism, you would never get away with paying people 250 pounds a month to work full time for you as a maid/nanny in the UK. I don't know if that would be classified as slavery or racism? It always amaze me how ppl protest so much about the maids' salary here despite it being the market rate but when it comes to the different salary that other nationalities get for the same job that a western person does....heyy...our degrees worth more than yours or it's your fault for accepting it!! Is it market rate or is it slave labour ? you decide So, it's okay to pay other nationalities much less salary for the same job that a western expat does as long as you pay maids what you would pay any maid or nanny in western countries? So only maids deserve better salary?

Living in UK would mean chasing after trains and tubes to go to work and home on a daily basis and I absolutely hate that my tax money go to ppl living forever on the dole. Lovely as my country is, living there would mean I would spend endless hours in the traffic jam. I see more of DH here and have time to actually take care of myself as I have no excuse not to do so. Living 10 minutes away from work and school is definitely a bliss for me.

I think it is really depend on where you are originally from. Where I come from AED1500 is what a fresh graduates get paid for their first job. And since I am not getting the western expat salary or package either, I do not feel guilty about paying my Filipina maid AED1600 a month. When I hired an Indonesian maid a few years back through an agency, the agency told me to pay her AED800 as she had experience from Saudi. Apparently, the one without any GCC experience, you can pay between AED600 - AED700. DH and I didn't feel right, so we paid her AED1200 and increased to AED1400 a year later. Many Filipino/na that I know do not pay AED1500 to their Filipina maids as like me, they themselves do not earn western expat salary/packages. And some of them do not even have a separate room for their maid as they themselves live in a 1 bedroom apartment. I do not know what the minimum salary set by Sri Lanka government but Indian government set it at AED1100. I am aware that we are not the most generous employer that a maid could have. When we renew her contract, we told her that we would increase her salary this April, could not send her back every year but would compensate her in other way. We would be very happy if she would stay with us but if she decide to go to another family, we would provide her with good reference. She decided to stay with us for another 2 years. Personally, I think it is very important to be sincere and up front with your maid with what you could or could not offer her from the very beginning. If she is happy with what you provide and how you treat her, it really doesn't matter what other people think. You can't justify all your action to others. My friend hired her maid through an agency. She pays the agency AED2200 every month. How much do you think her maid get from that? AED750!!! Since my friend had bad experience with the previous two maid despite being generous, she now told the maid that she would give her a very good bonus but at the end of the contract. <em>edited by blimey on 15/03/2011</em>

Personally, I won't employ anybody who is not good to pets. Pets have less need and require less attention than a child. If she has no patience with the dog, how much patience would she have with your children? If you only need a clean house, then that's a different story. edited by blimey on 15/03/2011 <em>edited by blimey on 15/03/2011</em>

Just got s a quick quote from Emirates with flights , airport transfers, internal flights , hotel and breakfast for a family of 5 of 49,000 aed . Is that expensive ?() for two nights KL 7 nights LK and 2 nights KL I would say it is depends on which 5 star hotels that they book you into. Obviously you could always go for cheaper option by staying at holiday apartment in Kuah town or family villa such as Chogm villa (about GBP350 per week) ;). 2 bedroom 5 star holiday apartment in KL (city center) for 2 nights would cost about AED2500. Internal flight with Airasia for family of 5 would cost you around AED1200 and economy flight for family for 5 to KL would be.....AED15000? Btw....I am assuming family of 5 meant 2 adults and 3 children aged between 2 to 11. So the flights could be a bit more expensive if the children are older or the other 3 are adults. You could stay at this 5 star hotel. 3 children would cost you about AED1200 extra for 7 nights stay. http://www.booking.com/hotel/my/the-danna.html?sid=8fb7074dbfdad303bed86efc6e6d5b0e;checkin=2011-07-08;checkout=2011-07-15;srfid=6ab63749617eb5c7cc7e42d9f7d38279X3 My calculation for 7 nights in L'kawi and 4 nights in KL at 5 star hotels with Emirates and Air Asia flights come around AED35K. So, my guess you are quoted AED49000 because you are flying business or First class :) anyway, this website has some info that you might find useful (i.e. climate, map, tipping, etc) : http://www.villa-malaysia.com/location.htm <em>edited by blimey on 15/03/2011</em>
