Hi everybody, Today I was informed that I will spend my week in Doha and coming back to Dubai only in the weekends. I'm completely adapted to UAE, but I would like some tips of how things are in Qatar regarding how to wear, work environment or anything that could avoid trouble. Can anybody give me some tips, specially if these could be compared to UAE. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had to go through all process, even driving for more than 10 years in my country. It took me more or less 2 months to finish the process because I could only take classes on the weekends. My DH started one month after me and got the license one week after me because he could take classes twice a week. What I can say is that it's a very boring process, you have to take many 30 minutes practical classes, in your case will be 40 as it's your first license (I did only 20 because I had my license for more than 10 years), there are many lectures you have to attend (more or less 10 in your case will be mandatory) and 3 tests and a simulate test. I got my license in the first try, the same with the lady who took the test in the same car, she was taking the license for the first time and got it without a problem, and we did it in manual car. There is a lot of terrorism they do at the school with crazy stories of people who took the test a thousand of times, but I've seen people taking the test and usually the ones who failed did not know how to drive at all and would be a danger. If you take it seriously, follow the instructions and don't let any story scares you it will be ok. You will see that at school even the instructors will try to confused you some times and say that the road test is much more difficult than it really is. Mine lasted 5 minutes, I did not have to do most of the things my instructor said, so be cool, trust yourself and if possible have some lessons with someone you trust, DH or some good friend to give you more confidence. Good luck!

Hi, I was sponsoring my husband, he came here because of my job offer and there was no issue at all. The only condition was that the salary should be over 12k and I had to have a managerial title for my job. The visa was issued after one week he was here. Now he got a job and is not under my sponsorship anymore, but the process wans't that hard. I'm not even in the list of jobs that they say is easier as engineer, nurse, doctor and teacher, but looks like that in Dubai is easier if the salary is ok.

Hi, I´ve seen one old thread here where someone said that she wrote a contract to the maid. I know it´s not official but I really would like to have something signed where she could understand her duties and rights and my duties and rights. Does anybody has any template I could use or "inspire" myself? Thanks

Hi mushypeas, I´ve called the agency and was very surprised by the fees. I´ll have to pay 9200 for an indonisian or 4450 for an ethiopian. Do they give any guarantees? The lady who gave me the information was not very patient so I could no get much information. The salaries they mention are very low, do we have to pay the salary they say? Another question, she said that all ladies are away, do they speak english at all? How was your experience, if you don´t mind sharing.

Hi, I live in Marina Wharf since Feb and I really like it. I got a very good deal for a 3 bedrooms with full marina view. I know that there are still 2 BRs available. If you avoid the side that faces the construction it would be nice. I live in a high floor and I have no issues with noise. The maintenance is decent and the facilities that were delivered (pool, gym, sauna) are also ok. The parking lot can be an issue depending on which floor you got your parking space, but in general is a good cost benefit. I've heard of people getting 2 BRs for 75-80K. I've seen almost everything during my search and this one was the one I liked the most in my budget.

Marina for me is the best place for a couple. He can take the metro to go to work. I live there and don't want to live anywhere else. The budget you have is feasible for 2 BR in Marina. Good luck and welcome!

Hi, I've just read the comments in the gulfnews article and I'm chocked! People are complaining about costs and comfort or not being able to control the kids in the seat! It's so sad! I come from a country where this law is recent and most of the time not followed by a lot of parents, what I think is very sad, because a child's life should be priceless! The first thing I did here was buying the seats, and they weren't even expensive, lot cheaper than in my country. But the worst part are the excuses that people find to justify something that should be part of the kids basic education, a kid is supposed to always be transported in the back seat and with a child's seat and seat belt. If you do that since they are small it's as simple as the basic things in life, like eat, brush their teeth and other things they do and most of the time they don't like. Let's spread the message, one person at a time one day it will be safer for kids to be transported in this country and every where.

Hi, my DD goes to Greenfields since Feb by bus. I live in Marina and I can tell you that I already has lots of trouble with the bus. The service is door to door and the bus assistant is supposed to give me a missed call every time she is near by. We try to be everyday at 7am downstairs, but there are days that no missed call is placed and the time of the pick up can vary from 7 to 7:20! :-), but the time scheduled is around 7:10am. Te last drop was the day that my DD was a bit late and the bus left without her. No missed call was placed and the assistant said she waited for 2 minutes after getting to the bus stop. We got there 7:11 am and I saw the bus leaving. Apart from the time issue, the service is ok, but very expensive, I pay around 800/month. My DD is dropped in the afternoon around 3:30pm, but this time also can vary A LOT, once she got home almost 4:30! They say the problem is that sometimes there isn't anybody to pick up the kids in some stops, and they wait. As my kid is the last stop.... But welcome to GCS. The school is great. Regards

HI, I've paid 2000aed in advance for GCS last month for registration fees. I love GSC, I registered my kid there Feb this year and at the time was my only option, no vacancies anywhere else and it was the only school willing to accept a kid with no English. Today I can tell you that we were very lucky. The school is great, my kid just love it, in 2 months she is speaking enough English to communicate and to be able to follow all classes without problems. The teacher is very nice and all the staff. My husband goes to the school almost weekly to volunteer in some classes and he always says good things. The only thing that I think is that comparing to my home country the things she is learning now are a little bit behind (not much), but in the end was good for her, because she did not lose much content while learning English. About the roundabout, she takes the bus, and doesn't seem to be a big issue. Regards

I was advised to only bring my husband when the residence VISA was ready, they said that this particular step would cost me double if he was here in tourist VISA. So I waited for 3 weeks. He said that it was also necessary because he could not guarantee that the documents and the VISA would be ready before the tourist VISA expires, in my case it was a high cost, because I pay for the 30 days and extension, it would cost me at least 800 AED for the 30 days and 1000aed for the extension. But as he is British I don't think it's an issue for you. He entered the country with this VISA, we gave this, plus the passport, medical examination and marriage certificated attested in my country and here to the PRO, it took like 5 days and he gave it back with the stamped VISA. My employer also gave the letter of non objection for my sponsoring. The info about managerial job is also true, it's easier if you have a managerial job, doesn't matter the field. This and the salary will be taken into account.

About the deposit I'm not sure, I only paid for the documents to be atested, the PRO from my company did everything, I paid also for the medical examination, around 740aed. One thing, if your husband is in here when you ask for the residency VISA it's more expensive, he should be in the home country, get the residency VISA (provisory) and then come to the country and apply for your sponsorship. When the process is going he cannot leave the country (around 7 days). All process took me around one month to be ready, but without issues. Isn't your employer helping you? Normally they have to give you some letter that they agree with the sponsorship. Let me know if you need more info. Regards

Hi, It has to be attested twice, one time in your country and another time in here. Here takes 3-7 days to have it atested, and you also pay for it, I don't remember how much. Without that you cannot apply for sponsoship. Regards

Hi ayada, I'm sponsoring my DH here. I came with a good proposal in january and I'm not a doctor, engineer or anything like that. My company said that in Dubai the salary matters more than your job description and most of the ladies can get the sponsorship without a problem. They also said that the law here changes a lot, but most of the time it became more flexible. What the person in the company said is that sometimes it will depend on which is the country you come from, as they were denying some sponsorings for Canadian ladies, but it had nothing to do with being a woman or not, but with the problem with Canada. The only problem so far for me is that my husband could not find a job, but no issue in the sponsoring. Regards

My old landlord was a company, he owns most of the apartments in my building (not all of them). I got the apartment through an agent (who I've paid the 5%). I don't know if only my apartment was sold or if he has sold all of them. The story is really weird, because on the weekend I had to replace one of the checques because there was an error in one of the numbers and I met the guy who has the power of attorney, he gave me the old checque and took the new one and did not mentioned a thing about the matter. The checque was cashed yesterday. I have no idea what are my rights, I'll go to RERA to figure it out.

I'm very scared, because the old owner just deposit my second payment yesterday, and in the letter it's saying the the new owner got the apartment almost a month ago. Nothing was mentioned about signing a new contract or the payments. The letter only said to call the old landlord for further information if necessary. I called the guy with the power of attorney and he seemed to not know much about it. Can the new owner kick me out of the apartment?

Hi, I don't live in the green community, but my DD goes to Greenfield, she went to a visit where she was introduced to all her future classmates, they even found a boy who speaks the same language to have a "tour" with her. When she got there she already knew most of the kids and felt really integrated. I don't know if you had the opportunity to have this kind of visit, if not try to go, your son will probably make a friend or two during the visit. Good luck!

Hi, I've just got some nice winter stuff for my 2 years old niece in Dubai Outlet mall. You have to spend some time looking for good stuff and sizes, but I've bought really nice things, coats, pants, etc in stores like Monsoon, Gap and others. Nice price too, but go with time to look for, not so easy to find sizes and matching things, but it was worthy. My niece also live in the south hemisphere and I did want to send her things she would use now.

Hi, I had two ceasarean and can tell you that's not very scary. If I had the choice I would have naturals but my first daughter was sat and the other one was in distress after my water broke, so I can tell you that each case is a different case. My first deliver was a little bit painful and it took forever for me to be walking and released of all tubes and things, it was a hospital procedure, and I got a terrible scar, doctor's fault. The second one was different, only a couple of hours to be walking and with my baby, the doctor fixed the scar and almost no pain at all. So don't be so scared, there is a risk because it's surgery, but if you don't have an option or if it was your option, be sure that you are in good hands and in a good hospital and that in the end you will have a beautiful and healthy baby. Good luck!

His last job was for Siemens in my country, but we could not get a contact in there so far to see if there are any vacancies. In the website says it does, he has applied but there was no response. I think that self employment could be also a possibility. Hi all, I'd like to see if anybody has the same issue and could give me some kind of advice. I've moved 3 months ago to Dubai to accept a job offer, my husband agreed to leave his job in our home country and come to Dubai unemployed in the hope it would be more or less easy to find something in here. He joined me a couple of weeks after I got here and so far no job has came up. Now he is starting to lose hope and getting very depressed. Has anybody being through this? If so how long more or less it takes to a husband/wife to find a job here in Dubai? Does anybody has tips for this job hunt? Any piece of advice will be very welcomed! Regards

Hi, Thank you all for the support messages, I believe now I really have a confidence problem, I already have a dog's death to carry with me, last year I had a pug that died of a heart attack at age of three with no disease notice. My kids suffered a lot. I'm really afraid that something happens to our dog and it will hurt my kids more than not having her with us. I'll try to get more info about the airlines that fly my breed of dog, but I really don't know what it's better, leave her in here where I can assure she will be safe with someone I trust, or take the risk and something happens that I will always regret. Thanks for all the advices! Regards!

I'll keep trying but I'm almost conviced that maybe trying would put her well being in risk. I've talked to her vet and she said there is a risk... don't know what to do. Yes, the problem is with Emirates, the breed is not in the list of the forbideen ones. It's a comapanion dog, not dangerous at all. I believe it's for the dog's sake. I don't know maybe is dangerous. I've contacted some companies that provide the service in Brazil, and only one said that wouldn't do because Emirates doesn't transport lhasas, I thought the guy was mistaken, but it seems that the other companies haven't checked the breed issue. I've contacted Emirates, the answer was that they won't talk to me because I don't have a "company", to transport something via cargo I have to find a cargo company. I've tried 5 agents, two gave me a package price, one said he wouldn't do because of the breed and no answer so far from the other two. But the two who replied said they would transport by Emirates. I really don't know what to do anymore, because I've found them in the IPATA list, so they should know what they are talking about. Still looking for a solution! Regards

I've contacted them and I have some news that were unexpected, my dog is a Lhasa Apso, and it's in the list of breeds that Emirates does not transport. I'm a little bit concerned now, what should be the reason for that, as it's a small company dog, so it's not because it's big or dangerous, maybe it's something related to the health of the dog. I don't know, it was good to know because 2 companies in here tried to sell me the package flying Emirates, and both knew that it was a Lhasa apso, and they tried to sell me anyway. I'm trying to contact KLM and Lufthansa to be sure that at least one of them transport this breed. Has anybody tried to transport this kind of dog? Regards,

Hi everybody, Thanks for the advices, I've already contacted DKC. I only want to understand if what they are saying here is true or not. It seems that almost all the info is right. I will be flying Emirates, but as she will not allowed to fly with me she can go by another airline. A company here suggested Luftansa, but I'll try KLM also. And it's not only the price, I only want to have a reference in order not to waste money in things that are not necessary or people who will not treat her right. And she will go after me with my family, so we still have some time, I only wanted to have everything set before I leave. Regards
