Really? Usually in such cases the NHS happily let the patient travel to where appropriate treatment is available, if they don't offer it themselves.

The other side is that as the parents are Jehovah's witnesses they could have been refusing life saving good treatment at Southampton (a very good university hospital), trying to find an alternative that suited their own beliefs. The same situation would arise if their son had surgery to remove the cancer (clearly a good thing) but it would require a blood transfusion, the parents would decline that treatment in favour of a non-invasive less effective remedy. The courts would have to step in to keep him alive.

I don't think they were doing "everything to keep that lad alive" by refusing treatment advised by the hospital treating him in the uk, self-discharging him and starting a tour of Europe for alternative remedies. The courts and medical professionals are obliged to act in the child's best interest, which can unfortunately conflict with the parents'. They were aware they risked imprisonment if they acted as they did. I hope they find a way of giving him the medical treatment he needs, with his parents out of prison. edited by Britgirldubai on 02/09/2014

Hi Englishgirl, That's a sensible plan too. At least you'll guarantee your own room here, rather than a ward of goodness knows who a la NHS. And here an obstetrician will deliver your baby, there it will most likely be a midwife. I've been here nearly 2.5years, from Hampshire/West Sussex. It's difficult to plan when hubby comes over, so that he doesn't miss the birth.... not quite the same via Skype. Unfortunately you've arrived here in summer, things are very different (much better) once we're past the hottest months so hang in there!

Congratulations! Hope you're settling into Dubai life and have started to enjoy the great news & stop panicking :) I found I was pregnant 2 months into a new job, but before the visa medical (slow PRO), so work found out pretty quickly as I had to explain why I couldn't have the xray. I'm 36, from the UK, this is my 1st pregnancy too (now 22weeks preg) and I also don't have any health insurance as it's not provided by my employer. After much contemplation I have decided to deliver in the UK as I know the health system better there, have family, and it won't cost anything. Hopefully by the time the baby & I return here my DH will have sorted health insurance via his work. I'm still in discussions with my employer about maternity leave etc, as I'm expecting the trip to take 3months minimum and am unsure about whether I'll be working immediately on my return. All my friends here are single girls from my party days, so I'm looking to make some new friends in a similar life stage... I'm going to go to EW coffee morning at Mercato on Tuesday. Good luck & I'm also happy to chat/help :)

London Creek Apartments are well priced, clean and well equipped. I stayed in a 1 bedroom for 7 weeks when I first arrived here, before I had my visa etc, and my mum joined me for a week there too. Its not glamorous, but it's adequate if there's a tight budget. Its walking distance to Burjuman & the Metro, well positioned for Dubai Mall area. It's cheaper using booking.com than directly through the reception. edited by Britgirldubai on 26/08/2014

I had about 20 relatives over for our wedding and they rented 3 x 3 bedroom apartments at 'Marina Hotel Apartments'. As there were infants & elderly it was perfect... Had a really nice pool & opened straight onto Marina Walk. Also really easy to get taxis & loads of parking for when I visited them. Excellent kitchen and laundry facilities in the apartment, grocery store and pharmacy on doorstep. Can't recommend it more, was perfect if it's in your budget. Good luck & enjoy the visit!! http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g295424-d1451261-Reviews-Marina_Hotel_Apartments-Dubai_Emirate_of_Dubai.html edited by Britgirldubai on 24/08/2014 edited by Britgirldubai on 24/08/2014

Hi, I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant with my 1st & only working part-time. As most of my girly friends here are from my single party days (now a distant memory) I'd be keen to meet some local mums-to-be. I've been swimming at the dubai ladies club (for convenience rather than the ladies only factor) so not up for classes but I'd like to meet for coffee in a mall too :)

Hey mezi & sandgrounder, It seems you can't win... It's either too much or too little weight gain. I had the 20week scan today, a slight abnormality combined with my age (36) meant I had to have the Harmony test. I'm hoping it's all nothing, and the result is only 10 days away. Not feeling ant movements yet, but it's my first so I could be missing it altogether. Exciting to find out 99.9% she's a girl. The name hunt can begin now.... Good luck with your scans next week ladies!! :))

Hey Dec mums, This thread has gone very quiet so I'm going to kick-start it... Hope you're all surviving the hot & humid UAE summer, and ever-expanding tummies. I've had sickness, various infections, rashes & groin pains but I'm hoping its uphill from here :) Good luck with the 20week scans everyone!! I'm a bit concerned I'm gaining too much weight, despite healthy diet and exercise :( Has anyone tried any birthing/pregnancy classes yet? With/without hubbies?

Good morning ladies, I'm pregnant & it's advised to only use herbal or organic hair dyes. I did this at home once, but it was quite messy as my hair is long and very dark brown (plus the greys i'm trying to cover up). I asked my usual salon whether they would use herbal hair dye for me, if I brought it in, but they said they couldn't as they weren't insured for this. Does anyone know a salon that would agree to use herbal, or already uses herbal?? I live in Jum 1, hopefully somewhere nearby. Thanks!!

We took our yorkie to Umm Suqueim Vetinary Centre yesterday on Jum Beach Rd. We were seen by Dr Scott, who used to work at Al Safa vets (where we used to go before it's closure). He's really thorough, diagnosed and sorted the problem. Our dog needed 2 injections & some tablets for 2 days. The price for consultation & all the meds was 420aed. We thought that was pretty good, the same has previously cost about 800. They're open 24/7 including Fridays. We live in Jum 1 and it took 10minutes. Would highly recommend them. 043210799

Hi bbarmani, It tells you the risk of Downs Syndrome & some other similar genetic defects. It's done at that stage to give you enough time for further tests (e.g. amniocentesis) if needed, to confirm the defect, and decide whether to continue the pregnancy or not. I'm afraid i don't know about Harmony but i'm sure you can Google it or ask whoever offers the test for more info.

We bought a brand new car 2 weeks ago which i'm driving mainly. When my hubbie used the car yesterday he noticed a dent (and another car's paint remains) on the back, which i had nothing to do with. I'm so annoyed and angry that someone has just crashed into our beautiful new car, while parked somewhere, and not even left an apology note or their number (which i would have done). Who would do this??? GGgrrrrrrr!!! edited by Britgirldubai on 05/07/2014

Yes, but about 5 years ago. It's basically very much like Turkey (if you've been there). We flew from Beirut, with Cyprus Airways (I think it was to Larnaca)... pretty rubbish airline, but did the job & it was a very short flight. We hired a car & drove across the border to North Cyprus. Randomly there were loads of Casinos there. I wouldn't say it's a must see, but as long as you hotel is nice it will be fine.

I sold mine privately - totally simple & easy. I took pics & posted it on Dubizzle (for free). I didn't put my mobile number on there... I was contacted by email and arranged to meet the first guy at Mercato car park. From there he took it for a spin (I kept his car keys & wallet). He then came back and made me an offer, providing it passed the RTA test (2007 car). We then went together to the RTA (by MOE) and he paid for the test, which my car passed thankfully. He needed a week to sort out some car finance. So we then met 1 week later at the RTA... he gave me the money cash in front of the RTA officer at the desk, and we completed the transfer paperwork. He had to get insurance and bring the documents, I had my ID and the registration card. I waved good bye to the old car & took a cab (and the cash) home. Job done :) Go for it, good luck!!

I used that link yesterday & went for a late lunch at Salmontini, MOE... Nice atmo & good food, but a bit pricey. I also checked out the St Tropez menu next door... also pretty good & nice bistro vibe. Think i'll be a regular in that corner ;) The mall was dead, inside & car park.... perfect time to shop! But I will try to do better (health & moneywise) & order a Kcal delivery today.

Congrats to all the Dec 14 mums-to-be! I'm expecting our 1st baby on Dec 24th. Feeling so much better in the 2nd trimester!! (Thank goodness) I'm planning to go back home (uk) to deliver, so I can't help with hospitals info (there's lots below already). My O/G Dr Koster is amazing!! (043881887) I had the nuchal screening with Dr Afshin Mirza at DHCC (who was excellent, and i'm planning to go back at 20-21 weeks for the detailed organ scans. I was planning to go to mums & bumps coffee at Mercato but it's stopped for Ramadan. It would be nice to chat to people going through the same, and without our old friends & family around. I tried Pre-natal Pilates at Zen Yoga (Town Centre, Jumeirah) yesterday pm, was quite good. I want to try the am class which is Pre-natal Yoga & with a different instructor, just need to chat to my boss about altering my working hours. Good luck everyone!!

Btw the blood test for gluten intolerance (coeliac disease) is different - TTG antibodies (Tissue Transglutaminase). For an accurate result you must NOT abstain from gluten for several weeks prior to the test.

If your IgE is positive to cats, then you do have a true allergic response ie your Mast Cells react to the allergen. It may be worth doing the blood test, if it's positive its unlikely to go away by itself after 6 months i'm afraid. It shouldn't cost more than 450aed. You can have immunotherapy treatment, it takes 2-3years but does have a lifelong curative effect. Or of course anti-histamines or avoidance. Ps. When will I stop being a newbie? edited by Britgirldubai on 30/06/2014

'Allergy Testing' - IgE blood test (or skinprick test) is an excellent TRUE test with trustworthy factual results. 'Intolerance Testing' - IgG blood test is a load of rubbish, completely FALSE with no evidence for significance of the results. Pure money-making scam by certain doctors/ labs (rant rant).
