Sorry for delay in response - the heart rate monitor is not built into the watch strap. You wear a chest strap which you can buy with the watch. It is my third polar. My first one I loved (although it was very complicated) but they stopped supporting it. I needed a battery change and they said they would do it without any guarantees if I shipped it to them. I decided to let someone in the local market (in UK) change the battery and it never worked after that! The next one was the F7 I think. It didn't last long - I was always changing the battery on the watch or the strap and it wasn't reliable in the gym so I ditched that. Pleased with this one so far - had it 6 months or so and going strong.

I used to have a body media fit armband but I thought it was too big and unsightly and you had to pay a subscription to keep your data history. Then the company stopped making it after being bought over by jawbone. I now use a Polar M400. It is a watch and it records activity and sleep etc. It tells you when you have been inactive for a while and you can see how you are doing towards your daily activity goal. It syncs to -iphone easily. I also have the heart rate monitor with it and wear that in the gym for more accurate data. (although it can never be 100% accurate) This is my third Polar heart rate monitor. I like it. The only thing I miss is that is doesn't sync to My Fitness Pal but this is coming shortly believe.

I searched everywhere for Brooks in Dubai without success. My husband managed to pick me up a pair in Malaysia after lots of searching. Brooks are great for running. Over the years, I have had 8+ pairs interspersed with others but for me Brooks are the best. I discovered them at Run and Become, a UK shop where I had to run with various shoes as they film you on the treadmill. Brooks were the best for me. I stick with the Adrenaline GTX as I know they fit well and now I can order them on line or get someone to bring me out a pair knowing they will fit perfectly. I only had one little problem when I arrived at the gym one day to discover I had on a wine coloured right pattern and a red left. There was no difference in the feel - they are so consistent! Good luck looking and enjoy.

I've had achilles tendonosis. It came on as a dull ache which progressively got worse until I had it all the time. I was doing a lot of running at that time and I just ran through it which wasn't the best thing to do. I would certainly see a doctor or a physio - probably physio first and then if required, a doctor with a sport interest. I always go to my physio first and then he tells me what to tell my doctor so I get properly referred! (seriously - physios are more informed on these things - my daughter is a doctor but doesn't have the experience a sports physio has) One of the tests they did was to have you kneel on a chair so they can check if there are any bumps along the achilles tendon. I had a little lump. After all the usual rest, ice etc. I ended up having some steroid injections at each side of the achilles (not into it and it was not at all painful.) I then rested it and after 6 months needed another couple of injections but I never had any more trouble with it and that has been six years and I still run. Flat shoes are awful for this condition - a small heel is better and the exercises someone posted are ones I had to do and still do. Get it checked though because it may not be this. I thought I had a reoccurence a couple of years ago when I was doing a lot of walking, running and pilates in Dubai but I got it checked out at MedCare and it was a stress fracture. It was sore and took a while to recover from. Good Luck - do get it checked and hopefully sorted out quickly.

I brought a bike out to Dubai with me flying Emirates. It was classed as part of my luggage allowance but I was travelling business on that occasion so I had plenty. I contacted emirates in advance to say I was bringing it, mainly to ensure the car they sent for pick up was able to take it. I looked at bike boxes but they were expensive and added to the weight so I took my bike to my local bike shop and they dismantled it for travel, packed it in bubble wrap and a cardboard bike box. They told me to bring in some bits and bobs to fill in the spaces and I put in some t-shirts, bike pump, tools etc. and then they sealed it up. They said they do this all the time for people going out on cycle camps in the summer etc. Because the handlebars and the front wheel were off it was much shorter and easy to handle. They didn't even stop me to check it in Dubai. It was easy to assemble again and I was was off on a cycle round the Marina the next day.

Are you thinking of the body media fit or Ki-fit which is the UK equivalent? It's what they use on biggest loser I think. It isn't calculated to a formula but detects movement and heat and can record the amount of sleep you have. To get best use of it you need to buy a subscription to download and manage the data although some of the newer ones can connect via i-phone. I bought mine from amazon and paid for an annual subscription online. I have had a ki-fit for three years and I find it fairly accurate. For gym sessions, I also wear a heart rate monitor. There are some exercises it isn't so accurate with e.g. cycling or spinning so adjustments need to be made on where you position it on your arm. I record my calories with www myfitnesspal on line and you can link with this. So if I have been to the gym or been more active than normal, it automatically adjusts your calorie requirement to maintain the deficit you have set between calories used up and calories taken in through food. I like it and along with my fitness pal it gives me loads of data - I particularly like the pie chart of my macros so I can check my carb/fat/protein percentages and set it to where I lose weight (i.e. fat) more readily.

I registered months ago and got a text to re-register so I went to MOE yesterday with ID. I was sent away and told to go to Dubai Mall. I was not happy and explained I had already registered so she told me to phone and ask. I waited until I got home and called and was told my original form hadn't been processed so I had to register at any Etisalat outlet. I explained that the girl at the booth in MOE has sent me away and told me to go to Dubai Mall and he said that was wrong and that EVERY outlet will allow you to re-register and that if anyone told me otherwise to telephone etisalat immediately and they will deal with it. Too late for me now as I leave for UK tomorrow and won't be back until July so will deal with whatever happens, when it happens.

I re-registered mine months ago and then, after being in the UK for 3 months, on arrival in Dubai I got a message telling me to re-register! Not sure whether to go and do it again. Probably best to do it anyway just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for that Beebers. I'm in Al Sahab so I'm on the corner across from Starbucks. I'm probably still pretty lightweight although it is heavy for me - bench pressing 20k, deadlifting 40k, squatting - still with the 15k bar. Making increases though and hope to continue. Will investigate P3. Might also contact Omar directly. I did come across him when I did a search but wasn't sure if he was into weights. I've had 3 PTs here in UK and they were all good at their own niche area. The guy I have now seems really in tune with what I want to do which is great. Thanks a lot! Looking forward to being back - not been out since April when weather was lovely!

My 30 days just run out and I couldn't bypass and go straight to my accounts any more. I telephoned UK and they extended it for another 30 days but said this was the maximum but would allow me time to have the unit sent out to me. Luckily I will be home this month and can sort it out. My global doesn't work. I can see both accounts but not operate them as a single entity as the UAE one was not set up properly After many attempts both from UK and UAE we were told the only way to overcome this was to close UAE account and reopen a new one. That was too much trouble so they set up a transfer account for us so we can send money home and that works so we stick with that. A pain but that is just how it is.

I brought back loads of cheap cartridges for my HP Photosmart from UK. Was confused because the number was different but was assured in UK that was the number I needed. Fitted printer fine but wouldn't work as the printer was set to a region and the chip wouldn't work. It came up with a message 'wrong region' or something. I went on internet to find out how to reset it and ended up calling HP but after getting transferred many times I gave up and bought some in C4 again! Sometimes printers give out a message that there is no ink before it actually happens and you can override this. I did this with my epsom and HP laser at home and extended the life by quite a bit. You can find these override solutions on internet. New printer cartridges are not as full as the refills. They are usually filled for light use or something and don't last too long.

Had to get a new battery for my 2 year old macbook recently in UK. It used to just cut out with no warning. Took it to one of the 'mac genius's' in the Apple Shop and he said it had been well used and had done over 350 full charges so it was needing replaced. Working great now with new battery. Download 'coconutBattery' (free) and it will give you a report on the state of your battery.

I have had chondomalacia patella and plica syndrome which is similar to a meniscus tear. I had surgery as a teenager which didn't really improve things and because my knee was immobilised for around 6 weeks there was a lot of muscle degeneration. I needed weeks of physio but after than I curtailed a lot of my exercise. Over the years I just learned to live with the creaking and occasional discomfort but around 5 years ago I was doing a lot of running and I decided to see if I could get it sorted out properly so I went to a sports orthopaedic surgeon in UK (very famous for footballers ACLs.) He did an arthroscopy and cleaned it out. It was a very interesting procedure as I opted to only have a local anaesthetic and he talked me through it and I watched what he was doing on a monitor. (Psychologically it felt good as I could see the gunge he was taking away!) He said it wouldn't be perfect as I am 50+ and there is now a bit of arthritis) but it was much better than before. I did loads of physio with the Scottish Rugby physiotherapist and a PT (daily) and within 6 weeks I did a 30 mile cycle. When my fitness drops or my weight goes up I feel it on my knees so you need to build up all the muscles around your knees to keep them in good working order. Sorry I can't recommend a physio here but when you find one, he/she should be able to plan a programme for you to work on either in the gym or at home. Therabands can be used in a variety of ways and are very effective. Hope you find a way to improve things. Take care.

An information guide to help adults travelling with autistic children has been produced by Manchester Airport. Airport Awareness uses images to show what to expect on a journey from arriving to checking-in, to going through security and returning home. Google this and you can download it. Although it is geared for Manchester airport, it might help you to prepare for other journeys. Perhaps you can take photographs of your journey through Dubai airport in preparation for future journeys.

Back in Dubai again. For some reason it always takes me a week to get back into the swing of things so I have not been overly active since my return. Some walking and a pilates class but today I did another C25K week one session on treadmill. Felt fine and knew I should really have moved onto week two. Will do that for next run, secure in the knowledge that I can do week one comfortably. At end of it I just walked it out until I reached the 5k by doing 1min/30sec incline intervals adding 0.5% each time and doing 1% (30sec) in between for recovery. Motivation is always hard for me. I know I should do it, I know I can, I like it when I am finished but getting myself out the door is the hardest step. Hope everyone is keeping going. Best foot forward!

Nobbles, well done doing 5k a day. That is so impressive. I hit the gym again this morning and my cycling friend (who is also a PT) joined me. I did HIIT on cross trainer, on to free weights and then he said he would help me ramp up my couch to 5k! Oh yeah...... warm up (I was already dripping by this point!) was 10 mins fast walk increasing from 1.5% incline right up to 7.5%. Then the intervals were 1min run at 1.5% incline and walking for 90secs at 7.5% incline. My calves were burning by the end, so bad I went and lay down on the floor with my calves over the viroplate, which really eased them off. I thought I was finished but he had me on the stairmaster for 5 mins to finish. Burnt 780 cals. I'm trying to lose a bit of weight for a family event in a couple of months and just get fit as I always feel more independent when I feel strong. I don't like to rely on people to help. (I'm 50+ and I like to be able to lift my own bags off the carousel and lift my bags into the overhead compartment etc.) Working out makes me feel better and I know this BUT it is so hard to get going. My friend was impressed that I hadn't lost a lot of strength or stamina since I last saw him although I haven't been going to the gym much in Dubai. I have been doing loads of walking though, since I don't have a car and also walking carrying heavy shopping which has obviously been good for me. Keep up the good work everyone. One foot in front of the other!

Good for you carpdiem. I like the bit where she says she knows we are thinking why are we doing this etc. Usually I am saying exactly that. The first 10 mins of any type of exercise I do is the worst bit. I call it the 'toxic ten!' It's when my body is just getting into the mode, feels awful and I just want to stop and forget it. When I get over that I start to feel better and know I can keep going. I did half the runs of week one yesterday but walked the rest out because my legs felt like logs from my spin the night before and I had already done 15mins on cross trainer before I started. Thinking of doing the spin class this evening but know that if I can find an excuse I might opt out. It's hard to actually get started but great when you finish! Hope your run goes well.

How are you doing with C25K Green-ish? I'm out of Dubai for a couple of weeks so will be doing other things but will pick up again soon. Did go to gym this morning and burned off 760 cals according to HRM, with weights, rower and elliptical. Met someone I used to cycle with who takes a spin class and he persuaded me to come to his class this evening. 'Just stay for half the class and pop out when it ramps up,' says he! No real point to bail out so I decided to stick out the whole class but regretted it when it ran over the hour. Turns out it was an hour and a half class and was made up of a few lady cyclists and a lot of serious guy cyclists! It was brutal. HRM read I had burnt off 1248 cals. I was really pleased I survived the class (at one point I thought I was going to throw up!) What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Just hope I can walk tomorrow! Keep running!

Just completed week 1 day 2. Easier than last one. Stats from heart rate monitor show wasn't performing near max so maybe I was slacking a bit. Was on treadmill which makes it a bit easier - running at 8.5k/walking 5.8 incline 1%. Don't want to push it too much as I have had achilles tendinosis through running in the past and it took ages to recover from. Cal burn just short of 300 in 30mins so it all helps! Good luck to those doing this.

I use maids.ae . They charge 35 with minimum of 4 hours. Have had the same girl each week and she is fine. First week she tried it on a bit and tried to finish 30 mins early. She just gathered her stuff together and said she was finished. I told her I had paid for 4 hours and gave her some ironing. After than she was fine. Always started ironing without being asked and then asked for extra jobs near the end of her time. I am always in and work away around about her tidying drawers, paperwork or sorting laundry etc. I always see to my own bedding and the place is always pretty tidy so she has an easyish time but I always make sure everything is done properly. It's easier to keep on top of things and check when you are around rather than leaving a list.I always get a receipt at end. I just cancel when I am on holiday. Happy with service from this company.

I did Couch to 5k week 1 day one yesterday. Have started it in the past but never completed it although I used to run a lot and did several 5ks a few years ago. Must have been difficult with the little ones in tow. Well done! I downloaded the 'Chubby Jones' free podcast from i-tunes and she talks you through it. The music isn't brilliant but at least she counts you in and tells you you are halfway through each run etc. I also have the i-pod app but I found that was a bit of a guddle to get going. Good luck with your journey. You'll be at 5k before you know it.

Last day trip with guests started early as we got a lift from DH going to work. We started at the Shangri-La Hotel for long and leisurely buffet breakfast. On to the Grand Mosque. Over to the Emirates Palace (The embroidery exhibition was on at the time - there might be something new on) Coffee & cakes at Emirates Palace. (Planned to have lunch there but too full after breakfast!) On to Marina Mall. There is a revolving restaurant at the top of marina Mall. We went in just for coffee. Great views. Takes around an hour to do 360 degrees (2 coffees!) Planned to do the Heritage Village next to Mall but never got round to it - next time! Edited as I got the breakfast hotel wrong first time! Have a great day whatever you choose. <em>edited by buttonmoon on 02/02/2011</em>

They are easy to make. Use either A4 or smaller A5 ring folders and insert laminated coloured paper. Have the laminated coloured paper sheets landscape and place vertical velcro columns on the shorter length. Then you need a thinner strip to go along the bottom which is stuck on with velcro but needs velcro on the other side to stick things on. You can see a bought one here www.pecs.org.uk/shop/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=7 They use plastic sheets but laminated paper or laminated card works just as well. You can buy large rolls of stick on velcro in Satwa. It is cheaper to buy the wider rolls and cut up to make it narrower. I brought a load with me from UK where you can buy cheaply on line. The important part is to be consistent about the way you use the velcro. If you are getting symbol cards from school or another source use that as a guide. It is a pain when it won't stick because you have used the wrong side of the velcro. It sounds complicated but it isn't. If you get stuck leave me your email and I will be in contact. I can help you with content, symbols or I can email you examples of pages or books you can make. Hope this helps.

I loved doing fractions at school. I remember giggling over the term 'vulgar fractions'. How innocent! ETA in case you have forgotten an improper fraction is just a fraction where the top number (numerator) is greater than or equal to the bottom number (denominator) and a vulgar fraction is a common fraction. When visualising fractions think CAKE! <em>edited by buttonmoon on 15/01/2011</em>

My husband wonders what I can have to talk about when I get together with my friends. He doesn't understand why it takes so long or why I can be on the phone for an hour at a time. It is good to chat. This post reminds me of a time my daughter felt sorry for 'poor mums who had to stay in with the kids all the time' ... When she was nearly 18 she started playing with the county orchestra which had an age range of 17 to around 85. She got a lift into town from a couple of young mums who lived in the same village. One night she phoned me and said the mums wanted to go to the pub after orchestra for an hour and they asked if she could she go. She whispered down the phone, 'I think they need a break mum. They don't get out very often as they are stuck at home with the kids!' She promised me she wouldn't drink and it became a weekly add on to orchestra practice. Then when I met one of the 'poor mums' later she told me my DD knew more people in the pub than they did! (DD's explanation was it was from working as a Saturday girl in a shop! Mmmm?)
