Right; leaving the maynnaise on overnight is best, but when sleeping solo. Otherwise it can also serve as mildly effective birth control.

For dry hair try using mayonnaise - store bought - or you can make your own (two egg yolks, half a cup of oil, use mixer at high speed and add oil drop by drop to egg yolks); apply to hair, cover hair and leave on for an hour; longer is better, as long as you can; then wash off with shampoo as usual.

If anybody knows the secret, please pass it on. I never did lose the weight. The baby is 20 years old now. Time to give up hope, I guess...

Thank you Muu, this helps a lot. I see your point. Perhaps the distinction should be between a newly arrived expat coule vs. a couple that has been here a few years. Thanks again. :)

Yukon gold are the absolute best, I agree, however, haven't seen them in the UAE. I would try any yellow-looking potatoes and see if they work, peel, cut and steam instead of boil. Good luck; I haven't found the right potatoes yet myself. edited by Catherine Abigail on 29/04/2012

Personal jewelry (note US spelling if you plan to search the internet for more information) is not likely to be a problem, however, it is likely to be inspected by customs. They look for commercial quantities that may indicate the jewelry is brought in for resale and they also look for prohibited materials, such as genuine ivory and tortoise shell.

we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.' I remember this as if it were yesterday! Love this thread! edited by Catherine Abigail on 20/04/2012 edited by Catherine Abigail on 20/04/2012

I know exactly how you feel; bronzing cream might not come out. I would take it to a dry cleaner and explain what the stain might be and let them try to get it out. If that doesn't work try a stain remover (no bleach!) and laundering in the washing machine. I did this once--figured I was going to trash the dress anyway--and it worked!

Gee, too bad your partner can't marry you anyway with divorce pending and all; after all, it is legal here for a man to have more than one wife; surely doesn't apply to Westerners, though. Best of luck to you with this situation; hope you find a solution.

Fascinating thread. Ladies, here is the UAE labour law: http://www.abudhabi.ae/egovPoolPortal_WAR/appmanager/ADeGP/Citizen?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=p20160&lang=en The above are excerpts. I don't think they would expect you to wear a shayla since you are Western and they would expect you to dress in Western clothes. However, I am told that they appreciate it as a sign of respect if you wear loose clothes that cover your arms to the elbow at least and the skirt is long (below the knee or longer), or wear pants with a long jacket or tunic. Needless to say, no low cut or see through tops. If you have long hair, tie it neatly in the back.

I always take a book to read during manicures/pedicures and put the tips at the back of the book so that, when the treatment is finished, I can just flip through the pages and take out the tips without any damage to the yet-to-dry polish. What a great idea!

You have a responsibility to report it to the Agency, but I'm not sure whether going to the police is your responsibility or the Agency's. It seems to me the Agency needs to be involved in going to the police as well.

I absolutely agree with Sandfly. If you had an illness, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, for which treatment is available, it would be foolish to let it go untreated. Same with depression.

Hello Neno, sometimes you when you are feeling extremely sad for no apparent reason and trying all the activities you describe aren't helping, it is possible your depression is caused (or exacerbated) by chemical imbalance, which can be treated with medication. You need to see a medical doctor; possibly your psychologist can refer you after you explain to him or her that the activities suggested aren't working for you.

I always tip depending on the kind of work (difficulty, how much time spent), ranges from 20 to a 100. Tipping is the norm here. A 50 dirham tip for ac filters sounds reasonable. FMO. Good Luck. Thank you; this is very helpful.

who gives their boss a present when leaving the company, all I've ever given my bosses is a nice smile then 2 fingers behind their backs on the way out lol Sometimes one has a perfect job and a great boss, but has to leave for a number of reasons other than not being happy with the job, such as for example, joining DH who has been assigned to the UAE...

I read somewhere that the only time you can give an expensive gift to your boss is a good-bye gift when you resign from your position and leave the company. I agree, many companies have a policy in place about gifts and you should check this out with yours. Probably a more appropriate gift would be a joint gift from everyone in the office; a personal gift, except a very small one, doesn't seem appropriate.

Just been watching a programme on TV called "One born every minute" which is a fly on the wall programme following ladies in labour then giving birth. This was the US version and I was surprised to see that although midwives (referred to as nurses in the programme) were with the women throughout labour, once the second stage was imminent a doc was called in to take over. Is this normal practice in the US? In the UK, babies are delivered by midwives and docs are only called if there are complications. Just curious, not critical :) This is the most common way to have a baby in the US. The nurses in the program were in fact nurses, not midwives, this is why a doctor was called in to take over. There are also midwives (obstetric nurse practitioners), but not very common; they may also be assisted by nurses during the labor stage and then the midwife delivers the baby. In that scenario a doctor is only called in for complications. To answer OP's question, no, you cannot spoil a newborn. My daughter would fall asleep on my DH's chest (mine was way too sore at the time from breastfeeding) for the first three weeks, then she went to her crib with no problems, but different babies adapt in different ways, so it may take more or less time. Just follow your instinct and enjoy it while it lasts. Babies are calmed down by the sound of a heartbeat.

Mangoes I ate so many my mum reckoned the baby would come out orange! With me it was strawberries, lots and lots of strawberries; woke up in the middle of the night to have some. For some reason couldn't stand the smell or sight of meat (which I liked before and certainly after); go figure.

I'm so fed up with the sheer incompentance and lack of common sense I've have to deal with in the past few days, I'd gladly sacrifice some of this 'faux politeness' for some straight forward getting stuff done!!! I had to call Customer Services in the US last week to speak to banana republic about an order.....it was bliss and everything sorted out in a matter of minutes. I wanted to keep the guy's number just so I can call him back when I get fed up of dealing with people here! Yes, so frustrating when saying "no" is considered rude. So instead of "we don't have it" or "we can't do it" they say "come back tomorrow"

Just to help with the symptoms, drink a ton of water; at least three glasses and you'll feel immediate relief. Needless to say do it at home and within a short distance from the toilet. Ibuprofen also helps relieve the symptoms.
