Hello I'll be in Dubai next week and I'm desperate for a pair of ghbass loafers (womens) and do not have time to get them before I leave UK. I'll be staying in Dubai marina area. Any chance anyone has seen these in one of the malls? Thanks

LOL that's just the overpaid flight instructors complaining about VVIP's ROFLMAO edited by ccdoha on 15/05/2012

Just wanted to post that we were very disappointed with this place last night. We had a group of 11. It was very different than any other restaurant that we have been to in the souk in that it was very bright and the tables were crammed together and it looked some sort of dinner hall. It was busy and the waiter was happy to tell us that many times - he was very rushed and not willing to explain anything on the menu - even saying 'we're too busy - not too many questions' ! The food was average - I ordered mixed grill kofta and it tasted the same as the ones you get at C4. DH had lamb something for 100QR and it was a VERY small bowl and he was still hungry. Very disappointing :( Tangine is my favourite.

I've mentioned this before but - there is a new clinic opening up - not sure when but it is near to Landmark - if you were driving from the corniche down markhiya to Landmark - it will be on the right hand side across from the BP petrol station. Not sure if this will be any use to you but you might keep an eye out for it.

I;m not sure why no one is just saying the school fees...are we not supposed to do that??? I think ASD and ACS (the 2 american schools) are like 50000 right plus or minus depending on age, right????? of course check the www but there you go. It seems the better companies pay 100% and the other companies pay 50% but that is only of tuition I have heard so make sure you add up all those "fees" the school charges because you'll be paying for those!!!!! I was going to comment that no matter what your husband is offered, it would be fine as long as you have housing because everything else is like everywhere else, you can live on a budget if you want and chances are you will still be able to save more here than say US or UK...but the school fees are a different scenario. I think they can be the 'deal breaker'! edited by ccdoha on 29/03/2012

Factors: age of children english first language Things change all the time because teachers come and go but I think the school chain (3 locations) as a whole has reputation for being a 'last resort' for expats or a place to go while sitting on other 'waiting lists' MOST IMPORTANT: I would verify the teaching qualifications of every teacher that will interact with your child. I would ask if your teacher is a local hire (and for the number of them at the school) - as these are the ones to 'slip through' the cracks in regards to police background checks and proper qualifications. Even having a BA degree does not qualify you to teach - not even in this country. You MUST be a qualified teacher. In my opinion, you should also have a qualification in ESOL (EFL) to teach here. edited by ccdoha on 29/03/2012

I guess I was lucky - I was a priority 3 and there were 37 people in front of me...I waited over an hour and when they called me to see the dr and I saw her I was soooooooooo happy to be able to explain my situation to her. I think she might be a bit new as the info she gave me was not exactly correct on how the med system works here as far as the referral she gave me (I found out later) but nonetheless she was helpful and I was glad to have seen her that day!!

its basically the corner of B Ring and Al MAtar It's difficult to turn into so I think its easiest if you are coming from the corniche down al matar and then you turn right on b-ring its right there on the corner - I don't think you can actually turn into it from any other direction :( edited by ccdoha on 28/03/2012

Well - I'm hesitant to post because I don't know if people think its wacky to buy/sell a used bed but desperate times call for desperate measures...I've tried to rationalise it with myself by saying that you sleep on "used" beds in hotels...and I know a lot of people that have to live in places here when they first come where the beds are clearly not new so...I'm just going to put this out there I have a bed that I am contemplating not shipping home only because its a pain to ship the bed and I think it may compromise the bed structurally to go through another move. It is a really comfy bed that I had shipped here - its memory foam with coils so you get the best of both... It's a Bensons Memory Foam Airflow 1050 2 drawer Divan (it is just like the newer model in the link below) http://www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/Divan-Beds/Memory-Foam/Double/Sensaform/4-Drawer/Airflow-2000-Double-Size-4-Drawer-Divan-Bed-Set;72363.aspx?Avail=&Search=airflow Its a standard UK King/US Queen - I do not have the head board in the picture I paid over £700 in the sale when I bought it in 2010 - I'd be willing to sell it for about 1/2 that at 2000QR I know it seems a lot for a used bed but its really really comfy and I will have to replace it when I get home. Just thought I would offer it, if I don't get any interest - I'll just ship it next week with the rest of our goods :) if you want to know more, you can email me at cc 4 sale @ hot mail . co . uk

maybe because the only people I know of, including us, all had 1 year old cars to sell - which you always lose money on anyway but they were the first place we checked before we even listed it and I was soooooooo depressed when I left at the offer they gave us - around 40000 less than we owed :(

I have also had other friends say they had a good experience there buying a used car HOWEVER...not to put a damper on the praise but it's probably because they offer PEANUTS to expats when they are selling their cars to leave. :) sorry just had to say! SO--- good if you're looking to buy - BAD if you're looking to sell.

VRDoha - I just wanted to add that when we sold our SUV for 98500 a few months ago - it was really annoying that people would call up and offer us like 30000 LESS than what we advertised it for. I get that people like to bargain but that's just ridiculous!. We only had one 'Expat' call us and he asked for a couple thousand off (as you do) and because he was so nice about it, I agreed that he could just pay us what we owed the bank (so about 5000 less than advertised by then). It was such a smooth deal and I was very grateful. I think it only for sale less than 3 weeks. My point is - when buying a used car - I think its hard to know in this region if it is priced to haggle serious amounts off or just a few thousand as you would expect to do back home...also, everyone that called asked me what was my "Last Price"? I think one strategy you could use is that if you see something advertised from people leaving Doha - just give people the price you're willing to pay and tell them to call you if they don't sell it for more before they leave Doha! That was a big concern for me - having to pay off the loan - so I just kept taking peoples phone numbers - no matter how ridiculously low the offer was - just in case!

WOW - sorry if this is not news to you but this is the first I have known about it... There is a British female doctor in the ER at Hamad - her name is Dr. J E Terris - Senior Consultant Emergency I imagine that it is not possible to "make" an appt with her but at least there is a possibility of being able to speak to her...

I found the vodaphone qatar plan complicated as there doesn't seem to be a way for you to "go over" on your pay monthly plan as it just resets the monthly value. The pay as you go plan seems to do a lot of if you pay this amount - you get this amount free - and I just can't be asked to figure out what is going on. The Qtel pay monthly plan (shahry) is very straightforward and similar to say O2 in the UK. My plan is 200 QR for 700 min, 100 text and I think 100 mb of data. It's not really a lot of texts so the fact that you are going to keep the BB for BBM is a good idea. Lot's of people here use apps like Viber or Whatsapp for messaging over data. The international min to the UK are cheap considering they are cheaper than calling an 0845 in the UK! We don't use them often to call intl but for the odd holiday or bday call to the grandparents, I never really notice it on the bill (and I am a really frugal). :)

I think you might be able to just take a picture of what you want and they will tell you if they can make it. I also think you will have to physically go to all of the places - Opera is in Landmark Bateel - there is one next to West bay petrol station across from Al Jazi Complex

thanks for all the info! It's not broken but thought it might be a small fracture. I can walk on it for a bit but then it just goes. I'm going to give it another day to see what happens, I woke up this morning and honestly could not cope with the thought of dealing with Hamad today :) but I feel I should give it another go before I pay for Ahli - (moving soon = poor) :) I checked the www and it says that WB and Khalifa have Xray - not sure if they do or not :( Thanks again :)

bump - sorry in lots of pain - OK so if not one of the HMC freebie clinics or Hamad -- where else can I go for a foot injury?? Please if you have any ideas, please let me know. I went to 3 pharmacies today looking for an ace bandage to wrap it and/or crutches and nothing :( Is there some sort of sports clinic somewhere I think?? ALso - does anyone that does use the medical card know if you can just go to another medical centre - I am in the zone for West Bay Medical - can I just go to Khalifa Med Ctr or do I need a referral from West Bay first? edited by ccdoha on 18/03/2012

Amy - that is a **** of an interpretation :) of my simple statement of: "All I will say is, I can count on one hand the number of people I know that have stayed here 3 years..." (you know too much) In fact - almost everyone we know that has left Doha has left for a better job opportunity (except those that got fired -he he) This place is just a savings account or a stepping stone for a lot of people, we're all pretty much here temporarily! Anyway - I'm in my happy place - my less than 30 days to go...besides I'm fine here - I have embraced the 'expat wife life' it's DH that wants to go! edited by ccdoha on 18/03/2012 edited by ccdoha on 18/03/2012

Amy - HAVE and ARE - 2 different things I'm just saying that 3 years would be a long time to lease anywhere, and in my opinion, especially here. Like you said, wIth things changing here all the time, new stuff being built, I wouldn't want to have a 3 year lease :) that's all I meant who knows - your DH might get a better offer somewhere else in a year... :)

There are plenty of places that will not ask for any of this so don't worry too much about it yet. I think it really depends on the employer and what type of contract they give you so I wouldn't worry about getting this unless its working at Hamad or SEC or something like that. The attested degrees I am sure are only needed if it is for a position that requires a degree, again like medical or education. police clearance I would think would only be certain positions as well. I was told that the Disclosure Scotland was OK but not sure... One place did ask for a No Objection letter from my husband come to think of it edited by ccdoha on 18/03/2012

I read an article about this once... may be worth googling - it was a blog actually written by a vet. He was explaining the differences in costs for teeth cleaning by saying that some vets go cheap on the anaesthesia so to always find out exactly what the procedure is so it is best for your pet. Not sure if it has anything to do with prices here but just thought I would mention. I remember this service costing about 100 USD back in the states for our dog.

I am not positive but I am thinking that the Magrabi Eye place also has ENT?!??!?! I have been there with DH for his eyes, and I am sure that in the elevator the other floors said ENT & eyes... the business card actually says Eye and Ear but in small print it says specialised centre for opthalmology and ENT :) worth calling...44238888 I can tell you the Eye clinic was excellent and 300 QR for a very thorough exam. edited by ccdoha on 31/01/2012 edited by ccdoha on 31/01/2012

OK, I have more info...the clinic is located on markhiya - I can't give you driving directions but if you are driving from CC to Landmark Mall, its on the right hand side about where the Woqod station is on the left. I don't think they have a "set in stone" opening date but should be Feb/Mar - I am sure we will hear about it on EW :) Some staff are there now "setting up" so if you're in the area maybe you can pop in. What I am really excited about is that there will be Western trained/worked in England (either or both is fine with me) staff there. I personally feel it is important that your Dr understands your culture and your overall 'way of life' to best treat you. From what I know - don't quote me - they will offer all kinds of services I guess like an OB/GYN office in the USA, including a pap smear. Fingers crossed :) p.s.I had the absolute WORST experience at HMC with a pap smear last year and would fly to the UK before having one done there again. edited by ccdoha on 31/01/2012

Newton will take them but will likely suggest to put them in a class year below - which I would object to and take your child somewhere else, or insist they attend after school tutoring - yes they tutor kids that young in this country - 4 nights a week, which I would also object to! Also know that just because a school claims to follow a British Curriculum and the EYFS programme, does not mean they follow it completely and they may have their own "spin" on it! I was just talking to someone the other day in the know about this topic and she said that for 3 & 4, they really do not need any ESL support in the classroom as it should come naturally throughout the program. ACS is new and so - no offence, from what I have heard, they are taking just about anyone, which in all reality is how it should be...just like a NORMAL school with QUALIFIED teachers would do back home.

There is a family visa you can apply for, I know an American woman that is married to an Egyptian and she moved her elderly mother out last year but I don't know if that fact that she was on her own in the US had anything to do with it getting approved. Have a look on hukoomi.
