We are planning to move back the first week of April. DH's last day is actually 27 Mar I believe. I've done some reading on another expat message board that says you must be out of the UK for one full tax year...which we have not, since we came here in Sept '10. My question is, does anyone know if it is just my husband who needs to stay out of the UK or the money too? As in, can we transfer the money back now and we physically return to the UK 6 Apr? OR Does DH and the £££ need to stay out of the UK until 6 Apr? TIA <em>edited by ccdoha on 29/01/2012</em>

As I understand it - If you are a govt employee, then you fall under the Human Resources Law, not the Labor Law, and medical is provided - (HR Law, Article 158)

When Glow first started offering it I called about it and they said that they CHARGE to take it off!!! As in, you get it done once and then if you want to go back a few weeks later and get it again, they charge you extra to take off the polish from before !??!?! Not sure if that is still the case Also, Pinkies does it

lalala - mine expired this month and it cost 100QR each to renew it but I explained to DH that since healthcare is part of the contract, the company should be responsible for it !??!? SO he took the cards in Mon and got them back on Tues. We didn't get "new" ones, they just said they had been renewed! Don't forget the electric bill - they def need that to "assign" the health centre :) <em>edited by ccdoha on 25/01/2012</em>

Your employer should do this for you (and pay for the 100qr each) I should think as I am sure your contract includes health care which you need the card to access! We gave all this stuff to the pro along with the passport photos and he took care of it. <em>edited by ccdoha on 25/01/2012</em>

I knew it catonclan! I had a feeling that had a big part in it - once an architect here told me that you don't have to worry about poor construction and design of bldgs here but if anything goes wrong, they'll just throw the architect in jail forever - now I know that is a very negative exaggeration but, makes you wonder....

Ok - this isn't much help at the moment but...I know someone who is about to start a job at a new clinic that is specialising in 'all things maternity' so...I will ask her for more details as I am sure she mentioned this type of service being offered :)

I agree with scotchanddiet - send him on the college tour and he will come home MIT bound!!! They really get the kids pumped up at these events. 4 years ago my youngest brother started Uni at Florida State University and he was so excited! His Freshman year he worked as a lifeguard at the pool, joined a fraternity. etc etc. Students usually get involved in all of the sporting events - the American university athletics are so fantastic for school spirit/pride. There are just so many things going on besides the academics. Not sure if you saw this... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/19/education/mit-expands-free-online-courses-offering-certificates.html @Tallybalt - 200K ?? I think that is a bit of an exaggeration...yes its high but inline with any other private US uni at 20K usd per year fall/spring. Yes Cambridge is a bit less at about 13K usd but the savings alone in living expenses... and is the US school worth it?? I think so... http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2011/qs-subject-rankings.html

I asked this a while back also and nothing...why do you think that is? It's actually making me wonder?? Maybe because people in the medical field might not be as affected by the "recession" back home thus no need to emigrate? I wonder...

Kind of like when I went to renew the registration on my car at the CC kiosk. I was told it was open til 4pm, on that day is was already after 4 so I waited til the next day and went over there around 2pm - only to find a sign that said open til 1pm so I had DH leave work early next day to go before 1pm and GUESS WHAT - no one was there at 12:30 and someone else waiting said they had been there since 12:15 :) SO - it was the last day to do it so we journeyed off to Khalifa traffic dept and waited to get it done there, there were signs everywhere about the new Qatar plates but nothing indicated they were mandatory. After the reg was renewed, the lady said we were finished. So we left...the next day, we get a SMS saying we have to go back to Khalifa Traffic Dept to pick up the new plates within 30 days. When I went back, I read the sign says that you cannot pick them up before they sms you so the lady was right, we were finished at that time but I think it is really ridiculous that you have to go BACK to get the stupid plate!! Oh, and you can't just pick up your plate, you have to wait in a long queue for them to take your old ones off for you and put the new ones on for you, unless you own the machine that does it!?!?!?

We wound up buying a new car in the end and I just sold it on Qatar living :) It took about 2 weeks. We had it for exactly one year and sold it for the balance of the outstanding loan - so we didn't lose any money on it and we enjoyed a fun car without any hassles. I also posted it on dubizzle and iloveqatar. Most of the dealers we visited the first time around had used cars stashed away or in the basement but they were all dirty and didn't seem to be good value for money. There is a used car dealer called Oasis on the corner of the B ring and Grand Hamad Street (the one with the swords by the souk) and they seem to have all used cars and I've heard from a friend that they are easy to deal with. <em>edited by ccdoha on 25/01/2012</em>

lalala - it's fine, I still think living by CC is better than a dusty villa in 'beigeville' ;) My experience working with the airline is very limited but when I did, we blamed everything on IATA so I assumed it was correct - he he he ;) Their are ticketing rules though obviously but I certainly didn't think there were tickets that were international airlines that sold tickets that you cannot date change, I stand corrected on that one! :)

Hiya- I would definitely say no, that if you don't take the flight you automatically void the flight as it would violate the iata ticket rules somehow as most RT tickets are bound to a saturday night stay over, etc etc, however, this is Doha so yes, best to go in person FYI - You can always change the outbound date for a fee when you purchase directly from the airline. I would ask that question while your at the airline ofc instead inquiring about your ticket, even if you purchased it through a discounted site. <em>edited by ccdoha on 16/01/2012</em>

We have AXA, (details below) and we have a 5 year no claims discount and the highest insurance pkg they have - includes things like off road and recovery asst and the first year was around 3800 and I just renewed yesterday and it was around 3400 and it is insuring 99000QAR. We could have gone with less insurance options and it was going to be about 3000QAR. I think it is pretty straightforward here as in, they are insuring the amount of the car and assuming everyone drives the same...as our car is insured for any driver over 25 with a Qatari or transferable license over 1 yr. I would say an older dog too...we know someone here in Qatar that recently took on a puppy and it was a FULL TIME job. We were lucky with our dog, she was about 6 mths, and she didn't need a lot of training but not everyone is so lucky. Having said that, we didn't' have any children and we had to put baby gates up because she was such a pain and had to be contained at times :( she was a really bad jumper, like jumping all over us, and I can see where this would not be good with the LO's. I would like to get a second dog, a puppy, but I keep reminding myself that it could turn out to be a real nightmare as far as training and driving us all crazy, (especially driving my current dog crazy) :) I think usually the rescue can/will expose the dog to cats to see if they get along. Your cat on the other hand may not be so happy to have another family member!! ;) <em>edited by ccdoha on 14/01/2012</em>

I didn't read all the replies but I just wanted to give my opinion as far as adapting to the climate...my dog (a rescue dog) is from Florida and she was obviously perfectly fine with the climate there. Then we moved to the UK for 1 year and she LOVED the cooler weather. She absolutely went crazy (good crazy) running in the fields and got really excited about being in the cooler temps. Then we moved to Qatar and she can't walk around the block without gasping for air in the hotter months!!!! So, in my opinion, I don't think it is easy to say what the dog will adapt to as far as climate changes. I thought my dog would do fine out here but she is visibly tired and panting on the shortest walk. She is older, about 9. I suppose a younger dog would probably adapt better. Good luck in you dog hunt and I am sure the others have mentioned the serious dog problems in this region, at least here in Qatar. There are so many abandoned. I know that once you get here that you will see there are so many needy dogs that you would be happy to take one on if you don't bring one with you :) My friend in Florida has a KC and it is actually a service dog as in they take it to children's hospitals for to visit terminally ill children. I know they are great dogs but to be honest, I don't think that I would buy a dog knowing that I was moving here...I love my dog to bits (no children) but I would have left her in the UK for her own sake if I had relatives that could keep her. I'm not saying its horrible here, but its certainly not the life she is used to... <em>edited by ccdoha on 14/01/2012</em>

My concern in this fiasco is the credit card for the flight...as I know for a fact that you can call up other airlines (i.e. Virgin atlantic) and make changes to your ticket and say "just use the card used to book the ticket" I imagine that doesn't happen here...but just a bit worried now... My friend was told they had to purchase a ticket for the maid before his RP could be cancelled and I don't know if it was coincidence/luck that her ticket was to leave before his ticket or if that was a requirement as well. As far as showing a cc on the return...in my experience back home this is only needed if they reservation was made within 24hrs of the flight. <em>edited by ccdoha on 13/01/2012</em>

My dog is really greedy too when it comes to "table food" or soft food (she only gets soft food on holidays). I usually roast a chicken once a week and I tear off all the extra bits for her. She "inhales" it and it creeps me out really. The only thing she has really ever had raw is cows feet from the butcher but then it was so gross to see her drag them all over the floor, I wound up boiling it and giving back to her...not good I see now! On another note - she LOVES carrots! She eats anything that falls on the floor really but I give her a couple of carrots a week, she also loves peanut butter and cheese :) Our vet back home always said these were ok to give as treats or in moderation. I watched a program once and they fed the dogs frozen peas (I forget everything else but just remember the peas). I looked today in the frozen section and was going to buy frozen mince chicken but didn't buy anything. I would feel better probably crushing up a whole raw chicken and letting her start on that...

Sorry, not sure if you are asking for a restaurant or a butcher... I think there is a new high priced steak restaurant in the new Marriott next to CC and Outback Steakhouse should be opening soon in Laguna Mall If you're looking for a butcher, I would like to know one too, as in I would like to know where the British Cafe gets the sausage that taste just like being in, well, a British Cafe :)

Ok so now I am feeling like a bad mum! I don't supplement my dog at all!! I want to give her some meat to enrich her diet but I am afraid that since she hasn't had raw that she will get sick, like bacteria or whatever. Everything I read says that raw is better than cooked meat but at this point, is cooked meat "bad" or just not as good as raw?

@amy I thought your dog food info was absolutely fantastic but I was afraid to switch my dog since she is about 9 years old and I am not sure if she would adjust at this age. I think if I ever get a puppy again, I will def do the raw diet. Having said that, my dog has done fine on the Royal Canin here. She was on Symply in the UK, which has the highest meat content in packaged dry food in the UK I was advised, but she seems to be healthy on the Royal Canin. I kind of think of it like Protein shakes for people, they are not the "healthiest" option but they are scientifically engineered to keep one "fit".

@ Happybird try contacting the Admirals club as that is very close to the Pearl to see if they'll be showing the matches http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/Doha/Dining/AdmiralClub/Default.htm Another thing to consider is that with the time change, the matches during the week come on too late (for my DH anyway) since life here tends to start very early (he gets up at 4:30 and leaves at 5:30) so he hasn't bothered with subscribing to the matches :(

Well, I took a new route to Aramex today and I was pleasantly surprised!!!!!! Coming from west bay, I went the way I usually go to the c-ring and then instead of turning right on Salwa, I went to the next major intersection called Abi bin abi talib, which runs parallel to salwa. That took me right to the r/a that aramex is on :) super smooth drive :) <em>edited by ccdoha on 10/01/2012</em>

I am on my way outta here so not always so positive but Amy77 about sums everything up!! It can be a good life here but DH wants to go home so the adventure will soon be over for us... We moved from near Gatwick Sep10 and we used Simpsons Removals, here are the details, they were very very good, door to door delivery we paid about 1800GBP for 800 KGS which was about 300 cu ft - basically a bed (must have here) some electronics and a bunch of boxes. Not to sound negative but...expect the unexpected and get everything in writing here...DH's company will pay for air freight also and one would think they would be happy to pay for sea freight because it is cheaper BUT they will not pay for all the other charges that come with shipping by sea, like the packing and all the other little charges!!! Also, they always want 3 quotes for everything. here's the info for simpsons Keith Stephen / Sales Consultant [email protected] Simpsons Removals & Storage Ltd Head Office, Blue Hawk House, A1 Manor Way Business Park, Manor Way, Swanscombe, Kent, DA10 0PP Tel: +44 (0)1322 386969, Fax: +44 (0)1322 383467, Web: http://www.simpsons-uk.com Proud members of: B.A.R. I never thought that I would live in a flat as we had a villa picked out before we came but once I realised how far out in the 'middle of nowhere' the villa was and the amenities were very poor, I chose the flat in West Bay opposite City Center (I only had the choice of the one villa or this place due to DH being govt). There are other families here from US and UK with children and they agree as well! We can walk to the Corniche / great playground that is now covered and to city centre. There are day care places within easy driving like Starfish Lane and the kids here that I know go to Doha College, ASD, ACS and ISL. The fact that it is so close to DH's work, I think its a good place to consider. The apts themselves can be quite big...ours is 3bdr plus a small maids room and 5 Bathrooms. We have a good pool and separate mens/womens gym. All of the buildings around me are about the same. It's much larger than any flat I've ever been in in the UK (and most houses for that matter) my bedroom alone is over 500 sq ft including built in wardrobes and ensuite. I do recommend to ONLY come with DH initially if the company provides the housing for the first 2-3 months in a serviced apt. Otherwise everything just takes so long to process and to organise here that you will just be frustrated! There are lots of serviced apts in this area, the ones I know of cost about 16000 QAR/mth for maybe a 2bdr. As for a regular apt, I think the going rates are from 10000 for a smaller 2 bdr to about 18000 for a 3 bdr There is a newer tower called Al Areen and I think they are in that range and very nice. edited by ccdoha on 10/01/2012 <em>edited by ccdoha on 10/01/2012</em>

just a note, the sling box doesn't need a TV back home, it just needs a cable box so it could be set up in anyone's house with cable and an extra box (with no tv attached to it). yes, I imagine the buffering is bad due to the lousy bandwidth here but it is an option just for watching the matches...I definitely would choose a slow football match (either v...p..n... or slingbox) and the Pearl over any other place to live here!!!!!!!

I've specifically asked them if they can send my pkgs to Landmark and they have told me NO Aramex does deliver to the home, but I don't know how to get it. I only know because I did some work with Vodafone and they shipped something to me directly and it was an Aramex delivery man.
