If you buy it directly from Apple in the UK or US you have the option of choosing a carrier locked or unlocked. I know someone who bought the 4s online in December and had it shipped via aramax and so did his brother with no problems. Even if it is locked in the UK, the carrier has to unlock it as in I bought one on 02 when I lived there in 2009 but when I moved to here in 2010 they unlocked it. It was only the original iPhone that the carriers were not allowed to unlock due to some licensing agreements with Apple. For the convenience , I don't think that they are that much more expensive here, as lulu said, just some of the apps preloaded might be different and I am not sure if you can just download them or not. What Jill is saying is that the iPhone 4s that she has can be used on both GSM and CDMA networks (CDMA being used on some carriers in the US still, GSM is in the US and the rest of the world) I am not sure if all iPhone 4s phones are dual carrier.

@Jill - I think its a counter issue as in the cartridge is programmed to yield so many pages based on 5% of the page usage...when the printer reaches that amount of copies, it thinks it must be out of ink even though you may have printed pages with less than 5% ink on them...there are hacks to "reset the counters"

If you want to be centrally located without driving, that is city centre however, there really aren't any compounds on this side of town. West Bay Lagoon is close to a lot of amenities.

I'll tell you how much I trust this Prakesh...I recently did some contract work that sent me deep into the industrial area in the evenings for 4 visits. After the first visit, even though I have driven to the location several times and I am happy to drive my JEEP, I insisted that the company pay for Prakesh to take me and pick me up. He was happy to walk me up to the door and carry my things (3 flights of stairs) and 3 hours later he would come back for me and he would call and let me know he was outside but walk up the stairs and collect me. He did charge a bit more to go out to the industrial area but the rates are the same as Fox because the company called to compare. I insisted on Prakesh because after dark in the industrial area is pretty scary, knowing I was the only female for probably a few square miles. I wouldn't say him or any of the others are chatty. I sometimes engage them just because I see them regularly. I think they work on a "commission only" type basis as in I think they only get paid for the fares they take not hourly. So I imagine this makes them more conscientious of the service they are providing. My first experience with the company was when we had to go and pick up a box from QA Cargo (NIGHTMARE) the driver called Abi was so kind that he drove us to the shipper office, then they said they needed cash so he drove us to the atm, then he drove us back to the shipper office, then he drove us to QA Cargo and waited. He told us to call him when we were done, he then came back for us and took us home...he could have really fleeced us - as we were new and been fleeced by Karwa plenty of times, but I think he only charged us 70 - we of coursed tipped him but from that point on we only called him. When I needed a "perm" driver for the work run, he was busy so he referred me to Prakesh :)

If you have them scheduled for a school/work run, I can say in my experience they are always 10-15 min early and call me on my mobile to let me know they are outside when I am ready. Usually you will have the same driver every morning but every now and then they get held up in the afternoon but he always sent someone else for me, I NEVER had to wait! For awhile, I thought 40 qr each way was too expensive and I tried walking over to CC a few days to get a karwa as it was only 17QR to my work but I would get so STRESSED trying to explain how to get to my work each day that I just didn't need that aggro in the morning! I found it very relaxing to just go downstairs in get in and they know where to go! For anyone else needing the occasional taxi...they are always on hand...I think they park up around Ramada in between jobs and wait for a call. They are not the type that walk around asking people if they need a taxi. There is occasional younger driver that drives a little fast but for 40 QR,I am happy to tell him to SLOW down!

I have a great service for you I have used them since being here Babul Limo Service I call Prakesh directly 33813517 They drive Honda Accords, always clean and the drivers are all Nepalese and friendly, well mannered and neat appearance If Prakesh is not available, he will arrange another driver. He has never let me down and always has someone waiting for me if he gets held up. the normal charge is 35-40 QR but worth it as very reliable! I used the service everyday before I bought a car, to work and home from work and again, never let me down. I tried arranging Karwa, and besides the pain of having to call the night before, they never showed up and then said the driver had a flat tire!!!!! That's if your lucky and someone else doesn't get in it before you, then theres the whole trying to explain the directions UUGGGHHH edited by ccdoha on 03/01/2012

Has anyone been to a free dentist at the medical centres? I noticed at West Bay Medical Center they have an office labeled "Dentist" I'm on a serious budget and was just thinking about booking DH and I in for just routine cleaning and X-rays...I am deathly afraid of dentist and would definitely pay the extra to go private if I needed anything done but just trying to see if a check up is do-able there :)

less aggro for YOU because you have DH go get it ;) LOL And, I will just add that I ordered from Bhukara caravan (whatever) and it was REALLY good this time!!!! yummy not too bad either on price, for 2 curries and 2 nan and 2 rice was 129. I think the portions are a bit smaller than star of india but that just means no leftovers. The pulao rice was enormous so def only one of those next time :) BTW - Have DH call me next time he is doing a Star of India run, that will solve the problem :) edited by ccdoha on 03/01/2012

Oh yes, def difference. I am sure that the others don't get to the same heat and then there are the ionic plates... CHI was what I used in the USA and they are just as good as GHD in UK and the rest of the world :) Plus - don't forget a good heat styling spray! Besides the GHD spray, I bought the Toni&Guy label M in London last visit and I like it. Treat yourself... http://www.ghdhair.com/ghd-iv-styler-collection/ghd-iv-styler I wouldn't go for the one with the bigger plates as they are harder to manoeuvre for us - non professional hair stylers!

I also have the GHD straightener and it is wonderful. You also need a good heat resistance spray, the GHD one is nice or the CHI oil is also nice if you can find it. You can also get those straightening treatments, they do one at the Sheraton, Four Seasons and Medical Spa in Villagio should still have the Kerastase keratin treatment. I don't know if they still do the one I had at Glow as they took the product off the market (had to change the mix, too much formaldehyde) They really help but they don't last long enough, although worth it for summer here!

is it possible to order vitamins/supplements online and have them shipped? Aramax/fed ex/dhl? I've looked over their www's but the info is all a bit cryptic... I know someone who has a prescription mailed from the UK each month through the post office there to work here but but just double checking. This made me giggle: from the aramex www (read closely) Controlled drugs may not be sent by Aramex. Those discovered in transit will be stopped, and handed to Customs or the Police, who may take[b'> illegal action[/b'> against the sender and/or recipient. Examples: Cocaine, Cannabis resin, LSD, Narcotics, Morphine, Opium, Psychotropic substances etc edited by ccdoha on 03/01/2012

Hi there! I thought I would use give you something to start with while you wait for moms to answer... I know there is Al Ahli which is private and Hamad with is the State/public hospital. At Hamad your DH cannot go in with you but you can have a doula. Hamad has a separate Women's Hospital that looks very modern and nice. I am sure that others will post but you may want to search for Doha mums.

I had laser removal in the UK and it hurt but they gave me a thing that shot out cold air to hold on it while they did the laser. That was back in 2003 and I only needed 3 visits and it is completely 100% gone. That cost me about 75 gbp each visit for less than a square inch. In 2009, I had laser removal in the US and after 3 visits I can hardly notice any difference. The going price now days in the US is $100 per square inch for laser. They have a topical ointment that you can put on first that numbs but I am not sure if it compromises the removal process.

From what I understand (as in, what seems to have happened to people at DH's work) even if you are lucky enough to have a multi exit visa, it seems that when the company decided to change their mind, they can still have it "revoked" without your authorisation or knowledge so it seems like they should give them to people until they have a reason to not trust them anymore... Also, I think that every company must/should have someone that is able to process them "out of hours"/emergency as again, DH's work has someone that is assigned to that function and they are not a "huge" (or organised) company. It only needs to be submitted online and is available very quickly. edited by ccdoha on 30/12/2011

@Krak - I don't live in AKG but I have visited a few times and it looks like a great place to live. It is a true "compound" that has many amenities including daycare, coffee shops, movie theatre room, etc etc. I live in West Bay and was not interested in a compound when I came here but if I had to be on one, I think I would be happy there :) From other posts I have read and from what I have seen whilst there, you will have a great time and meet many other stay at home moms. :)

Our friend had the same sort of thing with Jeep and his was only a few months old. The clutch went and needed to be replaced and he was about a month without a car or a rental. I think that they should at least allow for a free courtesy car!

I only have a few years in both curriculums teaching so hopefully someone with more experience will answer but I can tell you that for the 8 year old it will be absolutely fine. There are little things, like history lessons, where they will learn about the Great Fire of London as opposed to the American Civil War, etc. but other than that I think all will be fine...the 12 year old however will be much different. I have taught that age in both curriculums and will tell you what I can think of: Electives: in the GB system they do more of a rotation, for example, every student will have an ICT lesson on a rotation say, once every 7 days where as in the US you choose your elective, i.e. ICT and you go every day just about for a semester. Of course there are different variations but this is main difference. In the GB system, the students have a wider variety and exposure to electives but in the US system they will have a more in depth exposure to selected subjects and none of others. The main thing that you need to think about for the 12 year old is how long you will be here. When they are the equivalent of US 9th grade, they have to "choose" their GCSE subjects for next 2 years basically in the GB system, once they start this...it would be difficult to go back to a US system and they would be out of sync to graduate in a US system. In the GB system, they do the 2 years of GCSE then they are technically finished (at 16) and go on to do "optional" A levels in what the Brits call "College" completely different to what we call College in the US. Basically, I would say to make up your mind before they are US High School/GB GCSE age I think this is about 14/15. Unfortunately, I do not know anything about the IB programmes but I understand that is also an option and that would be the best route to pursue. Again, hopefully someone else will give you better info as mine is limited... edited by ccdoha on 27/12/2011 edited by ccdoha on 29/12/2011

Thanks for the info but I feel comfortable taking this prescription for a short period. When you go to a Weight Loss clinic with medical staff, like the one I did, they do a full blood work up on you, an EKG, and they examine you once a week. You also get a lot of vitamin supplements. I did it for about 3 months and I felt great. I also didn't need as much of the prescription as was prescribed. I'm not familiar with Meridia :(

I have been once to the normal brunch and thought it was good. Lot's of seafood. I remember thinking that it seemed "small" at first but it is more than enough choice, it is just spread into little sections around the restaurant. The selling point for me is that they have a separate kids room and they take all ages, there were kids 16mths - 13 yrs in our group, and basically you never see them again until the end :)
