I've heard of a SA guy who leads classes at Garveys His last one was last Tuesday @ 7pm (sorry maybe you can call garveys for next class) He recently did a beginner series too here is the info from last Tuesday: Ashtanga Primay Series at Yama Yoga Studios, Garveys at 7pm. Come and join in and experience for yourself the many benefits of this classic practice. Found the info on Facebook for the last beginner class in october but has all the details... https://www.facebook.com/events/289327471095538/ edited by ccdoha on 22/12/2011

I think that one that Rachel mentions is called Naza or something...it is on Salwa, if you are driving From Corniche, you would pass mega mart on your left, then ramada, then c-ring, then it is up on the right at the end of shopping strip.

Im in the same boat with ExMum - there really isn't a good plan here if you text :( I have the shahry 200 and I am always way over on my SMS and way under on my phone minutes...I never exceed my data minutes but I am usually in a wifi spot so my phone switches to that for data. It does help if your friends are using an iPhone with iOS 5 and you can sms via data minutes on iMessage but as much as I love my iPhone, I wish I had a BB here for BBM. I also have the mifi for 320 qr/mth unlimited data so if I am going to be out a bit and needing data I take that with me so I don't use my data on my phone plan. I like having the mifi because I can use my iPhone, macbook, iPad, etc with it (up to 5 devices at once) I should really switch to Hala and then use my mifi for data... edited by ccdoha on 22/12/2011

Gammon ham is like canadian bacon really...have you ever had a gammon steak? It is like a big piece of canadian bacon. It is tasty, but it is cheap back in the UK, I couldn't lay down 185 QR for it yesterday :( even if it was 2.5 kgs The Salami slices looked nice but they were 28 QR for 100g and the Salalmi/Parma ham mixed cuts were 45 QR for 140g I stuck with the bacon as DH finds peace in having a bacon sarnie after work everyday...makes like bearable for him, but other than that, I couldn't part with the cash for the rest of it :(

Last Christmas Eve was our first here and I'm not very Christmasy either so I was dead set against forking out for a Christmas tree and decorations. At the last minute we found a group, through friends of friends on Facebook, that were having a large party in the desert. We didn't know anyone really but we recruited another couple and rented a 4 x 4, as we didn't have our own car yet...it was truly the most amazing and unforgettable night I have had in Qatar, that is for sure. Camping over night in the desert was surely not my idea of a perfect Christmas but it will probably be my most memorable Christmas ever! I agree with lala, don't try to re-create Christmas back home - do something totally different that you could NEVER DO at home. I think that will make it special :)

I think the best thing you can do to stay informed here is to 'Like' anything Doha or Qatar on Facebook. Start with all of the hotels and hotel clubs and that way every time they have something on, it will post in your News Feed or in your Events. Sometimes they post last minute, like an hour before...i.e. Christmas Tree lightings :( If the organisation has set up their Page wrong and instead make a Profile which requires a 'Friend' instead of a 'Like' - I do not bother as this gives them too much info on you :) Just to 'Like' a Page or 'Join' a Group does not give the Admin, or any of the others involved, your info. It just allows you to see their Updates :) Here are some Pages to Like : https://www.facebook.com/WGO.Qatar https://www.facebook.com/wdoha https://www.facebook.com/Wahm.WDoha https://www.facebook.com/pages/InterContinental-Doha/121545491757 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Belgian-Cafe-Doha/100178270045757?ref=ts edited by ccdoha on 20/12/2011

To be fair though, if you were anywhere in Europe, or Aus (or even the States I guess), you would have to pay a Whole lot more than QR100 for a lost parking ticket - that's my experience anyway. Also, I would pay a LOT more than QR2-5 to park in a City Centre in Europe or Aus for a few hours. To be fair...I don't PAY to PARK to grocery shop in the States (or in England). Just saying...

I thought I would post after a couple of conversations I have had about WB-RL traffic recently...I spoke to 2 Brits who make this commute later in the a.m. (after 7:30) and they said it's not so bad, then my American friend who has been doing the longest and is on a Shell contractor contract said that she is REQUIRED to ride the company bus to RL everyday because her contract says so (as do Shell employees apparently) as the companies decided that it was TOO dangerous for employees to be driving out there each day so they are required to take the company coach :(

I just wanted to say that those silver "Thermos" brand ones keep the stuff really hot...so please be careful with little ones. I had a little girl in my class once that used to bring hot cocoa in one from time to time and it was way too hot still at snack time. By the time we opened it up and cooled it down...snack time would be over :(

ugggghhhhh went today and was a bit disappointed :( it's about the size of a Tesco Express or 7-11 :( Really wanted some turkey ham but only one type of lunch meat and that was turkey salami... :( too small went to c4 at laguna mall afterwards only to find out it was tiny too, size of a waitrose :( I can see where it great for those that live in WBL to get a few things but not worth the trip from WB for me :( POSITIVE NOTE: C4 at laguna mall had a real christmas tree for sale, I only saw 1 and they were making really nice table centerpieces/candle with the pine branches - too expensive for me (over 140) but would look nice on someones table :) edited by ccdoha on 17/12/2011

The sausages are def normal inexpensive British sausage you would buy at say Tescos. No we don't really get those in America but I agree with Blini2 - I'm not complaining, great for 'bangers and mash' and for a 'full english' Would love to know if they are going to get any new products in for the holiday!!!! Would be a real treat!

http://www.ndqatar.com/English/Events/Pages/CornicheEvents.aspx We can walk to the corniche so we're going. I would suggest taking a taxi to the Souk or maybe to the Alfardan Tower /BMW dealer and walk the rest, I wouldn't try to get any closer by car or you'll just sit in traffic. The weather is nice so it's a nice walk. There isn't really anything going on on the Sheraton end so it it pointless to try to get that far by car. There are busses that will shuttle you up and down for free but I'm not sure the route. The fireworks last year were probably the best I have ever seen (beats Disney) and this year I have read they are doing something even more spectacular.

alternatively - I am sure you would get a job in a school teaching computer class :) may not be your first choice but the hours are good. If you speak another language, try those schools first. and if your degree is in anyway an Engineering degree, let people know...for some reason they seem to like that term here, as in they even put it on their business cards, i.e. Eng after their name...cracks me up!

Some people at DH's work have things delivered to the work address but I don't think there is any guarantee on times as the USPS cannot control customs as mentioned...Aramax on the other hand is reliable and only cost 35 usd to open and then you pay for weight.

Try heading down Al Kassarat street around no 10, maybe on a Friday afternoon -the one day off for the thousands of workers that live out there... I recently did some work...there is one company out there in particular that is not locally owned...their employees are mostly from Nepal. They live in a block of flats that they are only allowed to run the generator for electricity for 3 hours a day...they have a water tank and when it goes empty they have no more water til it gets filled again... the kitchen is a room with 2 gas burning hotplates (shared by about 20) and the 700qar/mth wages that are behind 4 mths...want to hear more... edited by ccdoha on 05/12/2011

A lot of people that work in Ras Laffan do live in West Bay and it is considered a normal - doable commute. It is a straight shot of highway from WB for the most part and once you are familiar with it I think it is pretty straight forward so don't compare all the other traffic in Doha - which is horrible. If you are going to be working in Ras Laffan, I think that West Bay or West Bay Lagoon are the only options for commuting to Ras Laffan and I can't see living anywhere in between. the job market can be difficult here and to be blunt - there are tons of low skilled people here that are willing to work for peanuts (1000 USD a month or less). The best thing you can do is start networking with QPWN - Qatar Professional Womens Networking - they have their finger on the pulse here. Here it is about networking and getting out there.

Yes you can only renew the visit visa once each time you enter on it. If DH's RP is being processed, then it is my understanding that he cannot leave the country...you cannot travel while a visa is being processed or it voids the application, this just happened to a friend who came in on a family visa and got fed up with waiting so went on holiday anyway and when she came back in, they told her the RP AND Family visa had to be processed again (at her own cost no doubt)

thanks for that MC - since XE Trade said they do not do business with Qatar - they actually closed my trading account as we spoke because I told them over the phone I was a Resident here...(harsh) Any suggestions on where I can trade the money? I can't believe the place in the mall (UEA Exchange) would be competitive but I could be wrong...I imagine them to be like Western Union and taking advantage of peoples circumstances, or need for speed and convenience... Does everyone else just send money through the banks?? Anyone with commercial doing that??? edited by ccdoha on 03/12/2011

Hi MC Yes money here is QAR I'm assuming your money here is in QAR which is pegged to the USD so transferring it to the UK to a USD or even a GBP account at any given point in time doesn't gain you anything except you are poorer by the transfer charges. I'm not sure what you mean here...as the rates change every minute QAR (or USD) to GBP it can obviously makes a big difference when you transfer your money when you're moving good size amounts of money. When you transfer through a trading house like XE trade (or western union for arguments sake) you get the rate that they agree with you at that moment. When you trade through the banks, you get the rate that is available whenever the bank gets around to processing it and they can't really tell you what it is until it goes through because they don't seem to know what it is until it goes through. I have transferred money between the UK and US for the past 10 years and again, have found the best rates, least fees and most straightforward way is through a trading house like XE trade, the banks always seem to have the worst exchange rates and can never explain the charges What is your ultimate goal - to convert the QAR to USD or GBP? That would significantly affect what strategy you might want to pursue. My ultimate goal is GBP. My strategy to put the money is a USD account in the UK is that then I will know exactly how much I am sending from here to there and I can let it sit there and hope that the GBP rate goes down over the next 6 months and then exchange the money to GBP, obviously if the GBP goes up, then I've lost money. Having a look at the rates for last week, a difference of a few days and .005, I calculate to be a difference in 700GBP in my circumstance- I could have 'earned' on one day or 'lost' on another edited by ccdoha on 03/12/2011 edited by ccdoha on 03/12/2011

I can't find any info on that but I assume if they do need to be renewed it would be the same place that issues them...is yours to a particular health centre to the main hospital? I know they issue them at the health centre I have been to in WB. They have a little office and it says Medical Cards - its on the mens side :)
