Then I'm going to drive straight to the airport with my hand out the window giving them all a friendly one fingered parting gesture! :) Seriously going to add this to my things do 'as' I leave Qatar!!! But I have to admit, I don't mind driving... it's a bit like an adrenalin sport. I have to admit that I do feel a bit of naughtiness when I have to go left on the r/a from the outside lane (by mistake of course but still)

I have to say I regret daily not getting the Freelander which has the horn around the rim of the steering wheel which makes it super easy to squeeze it!

Poor KMT, I no longer suffer from this and I feel you too can be cured if you could only understand the #1 Driving rule I have come to know. If you understand this rule, you too can find peace... Based on my most recent in-depth study, here it is: When entering the roundabout, the vehicle that is 12 in(30 cm) ahead of everyone else, has complete right of way and can change lanes at will and at no fault. Therefore, at every roundabout, I gun it and assert my authority, unless I see a Land Cruiser at which time I concede and know that at any moment said LC is 9 times out of 10 going to cut me up! If you approach every roundabout KNOWING and ACCEPTING this, you will be much happier here :)

Here is the info for the woman that can get you the import permit if you fly the pets yourself. She got mine and my friends done with no issues at all, I think the charge for the permits were 550 QR if the pet is as accompanied baggage and 2000 QR if they fly separately. Everything is done by email :) Janet Qatar Pet Relocators PO Box 2659, Doha State of Qatar Tel: +974 5528 6335 Fax : +974 44667127 I live in an apartment in West Bay and it's not easy but we have found all the "good grass" and even though we are mainly in city/pavement it is actually probably nicer to walk the dog because we encounter very few people on our walks as this area is very quiet outside of work hours. I thought living in an apt with my dog would be horrible but it's actually so big she has plenty of room to run around. I think what you need to worry most about is if your dogs bark a lot, as in, if people will complain. If so, I suggest you choose to live where there are only expats because they might be a little more understanding/tolerant. They can run off the lead during non-peak times at Al Wakra beach but its a little bit of a drive. We were told in our building if anyone complains about the dog she has to go :( it was scary at first.

Just a minor update... So I was at the Dr yesterday and I asked them if they knew anything about a new HR Law since it would in affect Hamad Dr's as well and the Dr said yes that they are expecting to know something in July...

I agree, stop in...they also have an office at city centre mall outside. It could be that if they stopover one way they would have to take the same route back, not necessarily "stop over" on the way back but at least fly the same route to make it traditional RT fare, if that makes sense. good luck

as vallan said, they definitely have it in C4, I get them from city centre the packs of 4 pots are in a yellow'ish pack with the C4 logo that are vanilla flavored, although they taste nothing like vanilla as I cannot even stand the smell of vanilla. They also have plain in light blue'ish pots. I find that they are ALWAYS out so I have to ask the people stocking shelves when the next delivery is and then show up then and buy a few packs :) they are sooo good but not cheap, I think it is 25'ish for a pack of 4 dinky little pots but they are such a comfort when dieting :-)

I have foot problems and I have recently discovered Crocs. They have tons of styles these days and you can order online and have them delivered to aramax, since they are super light it shouldn't cost much! I wear an ugly pair around the house because they are way better than going barefoot or with slippers...I think they are pretty tru to size and I find that the sandal types you are pretty safe ordering online because they don't have to fit perfect as with a closed toe type shoe. I found one that i really liked and then ordered it in two more colours. I saw the sandal ones that I have in the random shoe shop in landmark last weekend, I don't know what it is called but it is one that sells all sorts. Also, have you tried anything from GEOX? They have a shop in Landmark as well. I think I have seen a few pairs of merrell but def ecco in the shoemart in city centre but last time I looked I don't remember there being any sandals, just fall/winter. I liked fit flops but if you're not used to wearing something in between your toes like me, I found that it bothered me.

twice last month I rounded down to my favor and handed over only the notes, i.e. if it was 15.45 I only handed them the 15 and gave them a look. Then I read the article saying that stores could be fined 5000 qr (i think) if they do not give you the change so I just keep reminding them of that at the checkout.

I use Safa for water 44606699 If you call the sales rep will come to your house and give you the starter bottles and sell you a coupon book the more coupons you buy, the cheaper each bottle is I bought a booklet for 175 so the bottles come out to 8 QR each they deliver once a week and you just leave the empties outside as the other poster said Once I forgot to leave the empties and I called them and they sent someone out same day edited by ccdoha on 13/06/2011

thanks for your ideas. I will get on ILQ as well. I am willing to lead this project and see it through, I am just known to be a bit outspoken and get myself into a little trouble from time to time so I don't want to jump in head first (with my foot in my mouth) as that won't help anyone. My immediate reaction today was to quit my job on the spot but that won't help my tea boys in the end! If anyone has any comments that might sound negative or like being the "devil's advocate" here...please say and I won't attack you. I want to think of everything good and bad as I have to remember where I am and I don't want to get myself in trouble or the tea boys! One thing I have thought of is that I don't want them being accused of stealing if I give them something...and I don't want to offend my arabic employer by giving them something and then he takes it out on them :( any more thoughts?

Does anyone think there is anything wrong with taking donation of items and giving them away? Does this violate any laws? Any cultures? Please I need to do something. DH's work has people leave all the time and leave lots of stuff behind - can I give it away?? I don't know the answer but surely some of you feel the same and can help find a way to make a difference.

just thought it was worth a mention...I only use aveeno back home but here I recently bought something from c4 and I am really liking it and it was not expensive Vaseline, intensive rescue, moisture locking hypoallergenic unfragranced it is in a big white pump style bottle with blue at the top and some arabic on it i don't usually buy vaseline products back home because they seem to be not good quality but this lotion is very thick and creamy and seems good so far. The OP said body lotion so I would recommend this for a body lotion :)

I can't comment on the sales assistants because basically they all scare me. I don't feel that anyone here really wants to help me as opposed to just sell me something... I have found MAC to be fantastic but I also like Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals. Sephora carries it and they have these great kits if you are not a make up pro that show you exactly how to apply. I have extremely dry lips and I can only wear MAC lipsticks but I love foundation and shadow and blush from Bare Min.

Jill is correct, the airline stands to pay a fine if they let you on the plane without the correct documentation. I do not know how it works for outside the 33 countries but if they would normally check for a visa in lieu of an RP, I would say YES get the tourist visa :(

WOW- see what happens when I go back to work and leave you lot unattended!!! :) Sorry Bechamel, I feel responsible for "turning the other girls against you" :) Can I just say that I only responded in jest because I have personally MET (yes in person) Bechamel and she is absolutely one of the funniest (I mean super funny) and nicest (nice in a catty kinda way LOL) women I have met here in Doha. I think that is why she called it a "rant". I was just winding her up :) xoxoxo Having said that... Someone once told me, "Only in America do people call themselves educated yet only speak/understand one language" :) Just saying... As for shop assistants and salon girls - yeah, I'm not quite sure how "friendly" I would be if I were getting paid the cost of your manicure for a days work!! OK, don't kill me Bechamel, this is a WHOLE 'NOTHER THREAD!!!!!!!!! Seriously though, I love that I can pop on here for a bit and read everyone's point of view :) I can imagine that some of you have little to do here in Doha (I do not mean that in a derogatory way) so at least this forum can serve as an outlet and way to make sure the blood's still flowing, I know it did for me for many months :)

We spent 4 days in Dubai last year and we did no research prior to going...we did the Big Red Bus, hop on hop off tours. I know -sounds lame but honestly, I think it is the best way to get acclimated with a city because you learn a lot from those tour guides!!! http://www.bigbustours.com/eng/dubai/tour.aspx?id=fa76e822-e9c9-440f-9621-c4deb579b4ad I wouldn't recommend getting OFF anywhere they go except to do the dhow boat tour which is included in the price, you can get off at Atlantis but you can only see a few things as a visitor, not like in the Bahamas where you can basically enjoy it for the day like a guest... and maybe WAFI mall. Yes the malls are big but the prices are too so I wasn't that excited about shopping. The skiing at Emirates is cool to see but if I remember correctly you have to actually know how to ski or else they only let you fluff around in the snow and not on the slopes - or you can take lessons. We took the Metro to Emirates Mall which I thought was interesting...if you fancy something different than a taxi. Last summer the Metro was very safe and there was police/guard presence everywhere, not sure if it is the same. http://www.rta.ae/dubai_metro/english/home.html Three places we got off the bus that we shouldn't have (thank goodness the bus comes every 30 min and free water): one was Dubai Museum-not very authentic, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum's House - his OLD house obviously and there was no one there except us and it was not worth the stop and the Beach stop, too hot even for 30 min. I still think the tour is worth taking but just don't get off :)

LOL! Ok, I'm just going to be the devil's advocate here...I'm sure when a philipino or arabic woman walks into a shop in the UK or US everyone doesn't stop talking ENGLISH !!!!!!!!! :) The only time it bothers me is when it applies to me. Like at Carrefour when I was at the customer service counter complaining about a return I needed to do and they kept talking to each other in philipino - that bothered me. But to be honest, at the hairdresser or nail salon... YES, I quite like the feeling of being oblivious to some people's mindless conversation :) Please don't make them talk in English, I don't want to know what they are saying! Ever heard the expression, "oblivion is bliss"! Don't ruin it for me!! :) :) :)

I think the two major reasons my fellow Americans don't travel abroad often are time and money. Many people only get two weeks (10 working days) vacation per year and a few public holidays. In my experience, it is often difficult to take off more than a week at a time due to work demands/workplace culture, or because you don't want to blow a whole year's leave at once. If you can't take more than a week, a costly plane ticket abroad might not seem worth it. A lot of people I know dream about taking trips abroad when they retire. I don't think it is necessarily due to lack of interest. I agree with the two weeks vacation. But I think my fellow Americans love doing road trips - travelling to other states by car or those home on wheels. With the exception of Hawaii, there is just so much to see in the US. Quite a few own country homes that they spend weekends, holidays, and vacation at. Personally I don't think Americans are very adventurous when it comes to going outside of the US. Money - I have to disagree, as one of the richest nations, I feel that maybe Americans choose to spend their money differently as a new SUV may be seem more important than a family vacation :) After living in the UK I think it is very evident that peoples priorities can be very different. I agree that Americans lack the adventure to travel and may shudder at the thought of not staying at a Hilton. :) The vacation time is horrible in the US and another bonus of being part of the EU :) My husband (British) grew up in a humble home where his father was in management yet never bought a fancy car but they went on a foreign holiday for 2 weeks each year not the type for show but to places around Europe and the North of Africa to experience different cultures, etc. I had never been on a 2 week holiday in my life and my parents had new cars every few years! Sad for me

yes yes, to be fair, regarding passports -- until recently, there were a lot of places we could go without a passport. Also, a lot of people don't realise that Florida is the size of England so before I ever traveled to Europe, I felt well traveled having lived and worked in 6 different states coast to coast and visited or driven through almost all of them. besides the continental US we could travel without a passport to: Hawaii - of course Alaska - of course Canada Mexico Aruba/netherland antilles Bahamas - all of the caribbean Puerto Rico Dominican Republic I'm thinking Haiti and all of South America as well Now, we need a passport to go to the Bahamas but I don't think any of the others...(don't quote me)

Ladies! Stereotypes are ugly. Sure there is some truth in them-but come on! Is this fair to say: Lets talk about other stereotypes shall we? Like if you are an Indian at a formal event, your purse will for sure be filled with the freebie butter, sugar, rolls, milk packets...If you are British, well then of course you will be drunk and unruly in skank wear. If your are Russian, you are of course their turning tricks. If you are Scottish then you must be fighting the Indian for whatever freebies are on the table. If you are American you are chewing on a stick of hay while cleaning your cowboy hat. And if you're Arab, well then you will just be eyeing up and down the said drunk brit hoping to get in her panties while your covered up wife is too busy looking after your spoiled children and beating her maid. Bwahahahahahah!!! You forgot to say the Brit would be orange from too much fake tan :) and if you're an expat, your probably on your mobile calling your expat friends telling them how cr@p the wedding is after you've done the mental math and costed the whole event out before posting on fb what a good time you had to all your friends back home:) edited by ccdoha on 26/03/2011 I FORGOT TO SAY unless the Brit had a 3rd degree SUNBURN as if to say - "Look at me, I can afford 2 weeks in Barbados!" What I find to be quite the phenomenon, after living in the UK... In the US, we LOVE the Brits and we love to hear you talk and anything you say you sound so sophisticated and intelligent. We dream of one day visiting London and seeing the Queen, however usually don't make it across the pond and if we do, we stay on the tours and remain identifiable at all times by our Levis, Gap sweatshirts and white sneakers. The Brits however, complain all day long about Americans, make fun of us saying 'have a nice day', call us ignorant, classless and boring, yet you book flights to Orlando, Vegas and NY 6 months in advance, watch The Hills, own more Abercrombie & Fitch then a teenager and have more variations of fake blond/fake tan then all of California. My point is - in the USA, we have much love for Brits and we show it, even if we seem a bit ignorant for it. In the UK, Brits can be downright horrible about Americans but can't seem to get enough of us. xoxo BTW-I LOVE THE UK

And what drives me nuts...the people that were hurt by him the most, poor-to middle class, blue collar americans struggling to get by, are rabid fans! They loved him! I've yet to see a cap at a formal event as well. Sure this thread will turn into an American bashing one soon Oh i don't know, it's always refreshing to see a post by an American, usually means they own a passport, which puts them straight up in my estimation instantly! LOL (sorry red rag to a bull, can't resist it) OK - ROFLMAO Passport - classic! ... I spent the first half of my life thinking "Asian" basically meant Chinese or Japanese. My first year of teaching (in the UK) I was in a meeting and the administration informed me that I had a new Asian boy that required something or other from me and I replied, "there are no Asian students in my class" - my school had a very large and vibrant Pakistani and Indian population and surrounding community.
