I think this is OK. I was working at a school here and as a local hire with 3 years US and UK teaching experience and a MA (not to mention years of corporate experience) I was only on 10000 QR and NO other benefits. Other teachers at my school that were overseas hires were on similar or around 11500 with the same benefits you mentioned and some with more teaching experience than I. I know a teacher at another school that is also a local hire that is on about 9000 with no other benefits. I've had two other offers from two other schools, both paying 8000 and again no other benefits. All of these are "international" schools that are fee based and have the British Curriculum. Hope that helps :)

I feel inclined to tell you where I am coming from... In the US, I taught at a Title I school. That means 65% or more of the students are on free or reduced lunch. That means that they are from very low income (below the poverty line) households. My elementary school had 900 students, that's a lot of poor poor kids. SO, I just wanted to mention this because I think some kids benefit more than others from volunteering. sorry for hijacking the thread...the bored unemployed housewife routine just does not suit me, I NEED A JOB!

I couldn't help myself - I told myself to "walk away" from this thread but couldn't resist and had to take a little look...I didn't read all of the posts but I just wanted to say that I agree with the fact that not everyone here is "worked to the bone" My DH works a 7 hour day/5 days a week so he is home by 1:30! Most people at his company work these or similar hours. This was another big sell for us to come here - the overall quality of life.

Hello - I've been here since Sept. I am from the US. I am in the West Bay area/no kids. Do you know what area you will be living in? I am always up for meeting new friends :) Sadly, I have only been out on a couple of girls nights out but I like to head out to the desert on the weekends for a little BBQ! Feel free to email me when you get here cc doha @ hotmail.co.uk Good luck with the move.

I agree nole! I have contacted QAWS twice and they have never responded :( Maybe they are so underfunded that they just don't have the manpower to even reply to emails. If you visit the SEC www http://www.english.education.gov.qa/schools/EISsearch.htm you can search schools by location I would think that one of these govt funded schools would be happy to have english volunteers. All of the ones I looked at have ESL/EAL programmes and teach in English. Also, the schools like the Indian School on the D-ring called Birla Public School or the Phillipino School in the industrial area. Don't get me wrong shanni & nole - I think it is absolutely WONDERFUL that you are volunteering!!!

OK don't hate me but... Since I am not working at the moment I had a look at this opportunity and had a look at the school - for a school that charges up to 33000 qr per year I think they should certainly be PAYING people! Just my two cents. ;) FURTHERMORE, if I were a parent PAYING these fees I would think I would want a qualified EAL/ESL teacher (no offence). http://qis.org/pdf/SchoolFees.pdf Sorry, but my personal feelings are that I would want to donate my time to a non profit company/school. I am not posting this to criticise anyone else, just to pass on the info that they are a FOR PROFIT company :) Ok, sorry for the rant been off work for over 2 weeks now - going crazy! edited by ccdoha on 06/03/2011 <em>edited by ccdoha on 06/03/2011</em>

My DH and I are 30 somethings and do not have children. We like to visit with friends on the weekends for drinks, etc. Back home, we were often invited around to friends houses where everyone is asked to bring something (bevvys and a snack). My question is this... I have always struggled with what to do about inviting people over to our house that have children. I always feel awkward because I feel that I am putting them out if I invite them because then they have to find a babysitter OR I already know they don't have a babysitter and our hose was not very child friendly! I find myself in this same situation now where we have lovely friends that invite us around to theirs on a regular basis but I don't know how to 'return the gesture' if you know what I mean. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know the obvious answer is to just invite them and if they come, they come but I would like some opinions on it anyway.

If you are willing to live in an apt, you may want to check out west bay. It is a really easy commute to the airport along the corniche - about 15 minutes and easy commute to Hamad. I don't know how much rents are but there are so many buildings maybe others know. I think it is all negotiable now. My building is govt so I don't have any prices. Most buildings are brand new and have amenities like gym, pool, small shop, maybe a cafe, spa, dry cleaning, etc. All of the ones I listed below are walking distance to city centre mall, the corniche, the four seasons, the sheraton, the W, kempinski and about 4 miles to the old souq The Beverly Hills Tower Regency Residence Beach Tower Edzan There is a building next to the four seasons -I cant remember the name but might be too pricey This post says that a one bedroom in Beach Tower starts at 6500 http://www.qatarliving.com/node/914652

Rach - I only tried Face time over my own wireless network in my house calling my DH in the other room so I can't comment on the quality yet. I'm not really impressed that it doesn't work on 3G because the chances of me being on wifi and the person I want to talk to being on wifi...?!?!?! I think they need to fix that because people will be under the impression that they can just be anywhere and make a video call with face time. I have used Skype on 3G for awhile now and I am happy with it. I bought the mifi device from qtel and pay the 320qr for unlimited internet because our building comes with internet but it is unstable and this way when it goes down I can switch to the mifi device and I can take it anywhere and create a wifi hotspot for my mac, phone or ipad ;-) I've had it for about a month now and I wish I would have got it straight away. The app on the macbook is very very simple with no chat or message features so I think I will probably stick to skype for now.

I just downloaded face time to my macbook and used it to call DH's iphone 4 that has face time. Worked fine. Here is the link to download it to your mac http://www.apple.com/mac/facetime/ A quick look and I don't see how to get it on your iphone 4 if it is not already there but worth looking into further DH said that face time does not work on the 3G network so you would need to be on a wifi spot, like at home on your wireless router good luck

I've not been here long myself but I'll tell you what I know... I think there is only one school here who claims to be british montessori and the fees are here http://www.doha-montessori.com/assets/file/Admissions/fee_schedule_2010-2011.pdf They start at preschool, which is for age 3 and the fees/registrations/etc are a little over 20000QR/year which is over $5500/year or £3500/year but I think that most companies pay at least 50% of school fees although I have heard that some companies only pay starting age 4 which would be reception I think that this cost is on the low to average side. I think that all of the school websites have their fees on them. Accommodations - our housing is included in my DH's benefits so we do not pay for that and I do not know much about that here. I just know that everything is negotiable! Also, if the company offers housing they may also offer you a housing allowance find your own housing but I don't think it is a lot and in my opinion certainly not worth the hassle until you have been out here awhile and know what's what! DH's company used to offer 6000 QR but they do not anymore even so I don't think we could find anything for that. DH's company paid for a certain amount to be shipped but the contract stipulates that it has to be shipped by air on the day of arrival, meaning it has to come with you and not be shipped by a shipping company etc. He's still disputing this one with them. Sorry I am not the best person to answer these but there are plenty of people on this forum that know more :-)

I teach reception age at the moment and I agree that homeschooling can easily be done and in a much shorter time than an actual "school day" because you find ways to incorporate "learning" into every day activities and games. At their age, "Learning through play" is preferred anyway so it is a win win. And yes, there are so many resources online that I use every day in my classroom that you could use as well. Also, everything you need to know about the UK National Curriculum, etc is online.

I need help with replacing curtains please. I am seriously lacking in the home decorating department. I really want to change the curtains/drapes in the bedroom and living room. We live in an apartment and the windows in these rooms are, along one wall, wall to wall/floor to ceiling :( So I am finding it a bit overwhelming to figure this out. Also, I don't want to spend a lot of money because DH thinks what is there is fine. The curtains are the type with the hooks in them and I have never had those before!!!! I just want to put up something a little nicer with some colour. I would be fine with ikea curtains but they don't have the kind with the hook thingys. The sheer curtains are already up there but could use replacing too. The measurements are about 558cm x 266 cm in both rooms. Any suggestions??

About the discrimination...my colleague is from the Phillipines and she says she always dresses and acts just a little more professional (than the rest of us) because if not people will treat her like she is "the maid" - which is not very good here for some. Like everyone else here, she puts up with the annoyance of this because her husband works for one of the big oil companies and they are like everyone else here - saving money and working towards the "bigger picture". I also know a couple of ladies from China that won't go to certain night clubs/bars because they feel that they get mistaken for "working girls". Yes it's wrong, but again, it just depends how sensitive you are to it. I personally don't think that it is a big issue here but I would not want to minimise the impact this has on someone because I cannot comment on how it feels. :( edited- when I said "the rest of us" - I meant it literally as the rest of the people at work, regardless of race/colour, etc. <em>edited by ccdoha on 08/02/2011</em>

I don't live at the pearl but I can see it from my place and I really like it on this side of town. The views from this side are so wonderful that it makes it feel more like a working holiday and serves as a daily reminder of the good things about Doha :) It is great to be able to pop out for a bevvy or a nice meal without the hassle of traffic too! The villagio side is a bit to hmmmm 'beige' for me. I don't like the 'sandy' look EVERYWHERE.

Towards the end of the game it did say that the official head count was over 37000. I read the stadium holds 50000. We went with friends and got there early and parked on the street about mile away. I don't know what time it was but by the time we got to our seats, I don't remember waiting long too kick off. We went for a drink at about 30 minutes and we saw a crowd outside the gates and someone shouting over the loud speaker - we thought they were 'just practising' crowd control for 2022 ;-) At 90 minutes, when it went to overtime, we jumped ship and walked to Villagio to get a taxi home :(

LadyT - that is a bit harsh! I would really be interested to find out how you came up with this opinion? All 3 newton schools have overseas qualified and expat staff. I think that this topic has been discussed several times and everyone has different criteria on what they are looking for particular and no school seems to please everyone but to say a school is a 'child storage facility' ouch! Do tell!

Highly disorganised is an understatement! I would definitely get everything in writing and then still cross your fingers that it is upheld. I think Doha can be great if you can stand all of the little let downs along the way or if it is going to seriously boost your career. If you are comfortable where you are and have a future, I would honestly say give it a miss. I don't think it is an experience that you need to have if avoidable. It would really be a pain for your company to not offer housing for you and for them to offer you the housing allowance and you try to find somewhere. I have read on here that you can get a 1 bdr in the Pearl for maybe 9000 or so and other than something that comes highly recommended, I wouldn't go through the hassle. As for figures - We shop conservatively at the expat type grocery store and we easily spend 700 qr a week for 2. If we go to the local place carrefour we only spend about 400-500 qr I have heard all kinds of stories about electric, it depends on whether your building pays for the a/c costs. if not, it can be a flat rate of 500 qr for a/c and then whatever you use for electric. Cars (to own) and petrol are cheaper than they are in the UK. It cost less than 20 GBP to fill up your car! :) A reliable car service to get you to and from work while you get sorted cost about 40 each way. To rent a decent/safe car is about 2000 qr/month and up. Cocktails - about 45-60qr for a mojito Your company should pay to ship some of your things. We have a store similar to Tesco's so you can buy everything to set up house on the cheap. Your accommodation usually can be fuly furnished for you with the basics. There's no ikea here :( Traffic is most unenjoyable Don't be embarrassed to ask people about your salary. The worse thing is getting here and find out you went too low or could have asked for more benefits. Ask for a housing allowance, transportation allowance, of course RT tickets each year, etc. Some of the bigger companies here guarantee a loan so you can buy a car and some companies do not so you have to pay an extra 2500 qr just to have a car loan! Make sure you know what will happen when you get here, if they are providing housing, get the exact location in writing. I know that some companies put you in crappy temporary housing until you get your paperwork sorted when you first get here and that can take up to 3 months! Even though you are still working! If they do not provide housing or they say you will be in a hotel... If I were a single female coming here, I would INSIST on 2 months guaranteed hotel accommodations and car service. It will take that long to get stuff sorted out. My husband took a promotion and we are here enjoying short working hours with a decent wage and decent accommodations all provided for. We bought a fun car that we would not be able to afford in the UK. We are enjoying the slow pace and the sunshine for a few years while we save and then hopefully return to the UK. I can't imagine that I would enjoy this place if I were younger and single unless I needed a boost in my career or my bank account ;(

Hello Natalie - the only thing that I wanted to add is how I perceive life in general here in Doha. I realise that the medical care is your first priority but just wanted to mention my opinion, having spent that last year in London and then moving here 4 months ago. In the UK, "the current economic climate (negative, negative, negative)" is all we heard about for an entire year! The cost of living is so expensive and is was just downright a sad state of affairs there. I love the UK and I love the scenery, the culture and the busy busy environment but life was looking pretty grim for us there and the job market was absolute ****. I'm pretty sure we didn't know anyone that was "financially happy". In Doha, our pace of life is slower in one respect as there is not so much to do but on the other hand, we seem to have tickets for something or dinner invites every weekend. Doha is much "slower" than Dubai, I read that Dubai had 70 malls, (I've only been to 4 there and I was happy) while here we have 4 (if you count The Centre) I think. I see my husband more here than I have ever because he works less hours. I lived in the UK before and it was not as bad but I think that they are really suffering from the "current economic climate". I hope that we will be able to return to the UK one day but for now, we are enjoying life in Doha while we can :) Another thing is the expat community...this is our first expat experience, even though we have lived in the USA and UK, that doesn't really count. I feel that we have made so many friends here in a short period of time that this really doesn't happen back home (UK or USA) There are so many women on this forum alone that are extending their help and friendship every day. This forum kept me sane for my first few months! Everything you need to know about the UK hospitals is on the NHS www, http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx I did a lot of reading about the NHS when I moved back to the UK in 2009. I seem to remember they have a clause in there somewhere saying that you could have to be resident for one year before healthcare is free, although they never seem to enforce it but worth having a good read through. Here is another www for info http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HealthAndWellBeing/index.htm Good luck in your decision!

It will take about 30 minutes to get to Doha College from West Bay. Keep in mind that the schools start really early here, even the little ones. I think that most schools start about 645 or 700 and if you leave West Bay by 6:15 you can get to Doha College on time. I go just a little past Doha College each morning. I was using a very reliable car service before I started driving and they were charging 40qar each way. Newton International does have a West Bay location. I don't know a lot about it but I think that depending on your child's age, you might consider trying it and stay on the DESS waiting list just for back up. Driving is an absolute nightmare here so I guess a big factor would be the transportation. I love living in West Bay but we do not have children. It is as "downtown" as it gets around here and we like to walk everywhere. It's really pretty on this side of town with the Doha skyline against the blue water. We are only a few blocks from the corniche and a few km from the old souq. It's pretty quiet where we are as nobody seems to go outside. If that's you're thing then WB would suit you I think.

my 2 cents...I have to admit that I absolutely hated here for the first 2 months!! Everything takes forever to sort out, no one seems to give you a straight answer and everything seems to be a "guideline" not a fact. I was also very intimidated by women in abayas and felt like I had to just keep my mouth shut or I would get us deported. I felt like my DH had made a "deal with the devil" and "sold our souls" by coming here. Then, things started to get sorted, I got a job and read the best advice ever on the expat forum. I apologise because I forget who it was but it said FIFO (Fit in or f*** off). I really made an effort to adjust my attitude. We've been here 4 months and I really, really like it here. I feel that overall, we have a really good quality of life with short working hours. Through my work I meet with all nationalities, including Qatariis, and I find everyone to be very friendly and open to different cultures (I'd worry more about the expats -ha ha). As kiwispiers says the driving here is a different story...as for being safe, I honestly feel safer here than anywhere I have ever been. <em>edited by ccdoha on 25/01/2011</em>

sorry to hijack the thread but I have a another question about labour law and days off... DH has been told that if you take the days both "sides" of the "weekend" off, you get "charged" the weekend days as your holiday. i.e. DH ordinarily works Sun-Thur. He takes off 1 week and gets charged 5 days holiday, if he takes 2 weeks, he gets charged 12 days as they charge him the weekend that fell in between! Another example, if DH takes off Wed, Thur, (off weekends) then Sun - again he gets charged 5 days even though his days off would ordinarily be Fri and Sat! Please tell me what you think

If you stay in West Bay, I really don't think you need a car. The Four Seasons, Sheraton, the W and Kempinski, City Centre Mall and the Corniche are all in walking distance from each other. The Souq Waqif is only about 4 miles away but too hot to walk int he day and a taxi is cheap like Dubai. From City Centre you can always get a taxi anywhere you are going like to Villagio (mall) or Landmark Mall. The driving here is going to be easier than Dubai because we are not as crowded, yes the driving here is bad, but I felt Dubai was worse. Not sure about the jewellery, I would guess it is not cheaper because we do not have as many shops as in Dubai. Jillmv is right, you can see all of Qatar in a day or 2. From what I have seen, the bulk of the touristy stuff is in West Bay to best to stay as close as you can. As for your passport, you have to show it to get into anywhere that has alcohol as far as I know. They actually scan it (take a copy of the picture) at some places. <em>edited by ccdoha on 03/01/2011</em>

@bech Salam is hard describe. It's an exclusive'ish department store. Maybe I would compare it to say Saks or Nordstrom in the states. It's one of those stores that has a few brands and then only a few sizes of each item to make it seem more exclusive. I was in there last week and I saw a pair of Armani Jeans size 3 months and they were over 600 QAR ;-) They do have a great camera section with a lot of professional looking equipment. There is one located in City Centre, if you're coming from the tennis, it is before you get to city centre mall, near to the BMW dealer.

There was a post about this a few months ago... http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=121779 I know someone who took it and said she had the same experience as this poster. In my opinion, I think you just have to be/act really confident and I don't really see where the driving lessons are going to help! Good luck!!

Hi Amy We bought a nice memory foam type bed from Bensons in the UK a few months before we moved out here last September so we shipped ours with the rest of our stuff. I think we paid about 700GBP during a bank holiday sale for a UK King. The beds in our apt are brand new but not comfortable at all so we are glad we have it! We have Debenhams here so you can definitely find UK linen sizes. I wish I would have purchased a few extras from Ikea back home though. Since our stuff took about 3 months to get here anyway, we had to buy a new duvet, pillows and linens anyway!

@newbie thanks for the post. I went out there Thursday at around 3:30 and the driver and my DH were sure they were going to be closed. When we got there, it was completely empty and I was afraid they were right but I went in and sure enough they were open and I was the only one there!!! No lines, no wait!!! Took about 10 minutes! I took with me all the paperwork I had but the only form they wanted was the one that has the box for the picture on top and it was not filled out or anything, I think they just record the number that is on it. They didn't even ask for ID!
