They have import tax in the UK as well...I once had a digital camera sent to me from the USA to the UK as a bday present and I had to pay somewhere around 50GBP in import tax, even though it was a present. As for the insurance on the UK side through Royal Mail, they have told me in the past that they are not responsible for it once it leaves the UK as it cannot be "tracked" by them. Same in the USA at the post office. Not sure if things have changed recently.

I have ordered something from the US and it says it was dispatched to Dubai on the 22. I haven't heard anything yet???? I realise now that the toy sword was on the banned list...if they were going to stop it or delay it, would that have been done in the USA already?? and will this delay the order at this point?? I don't care about the sword, I just want the rest of the stuff!

We're making exit plans so I am in a better mood - thanks ladies :) Things always look better when you have options :) Yes - sorry - I had thanksgiving on the brain and was thinking of Thursdays :) Yes, Mondays for QPWN. If you go, I suggest get there EARLY and find a comfort zone!!! It gets really big really fast and if you were overwhelmed at coffee a.m. you will feel the same. HOWEVER, if you get there right at door opening, I am positive that someone will come up and start talking to you right away. Dogs - my dog is not really a people person either but if you go to Wakra when the tide is low, there is plenty of beach there for everyone and my dog just barely tolerates the other dogs so mommy can talk to other ladies. If you go on this dog walking group and post your situation, you will have friends tomorrow and probably a lift to the dog walking beaches https://www.facebook.com/groups/174477659275888/ Yes, all of the QA Pilot's wives I have met have been really wonderful...if they would just take me in their suitcases to somewhere nice I might be even more inclined to type good things :) lalala - sorry about the toddler :( my dog is really a sweetie :) edited by ccdoha on 24/10/2011

DH is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to his eyes. I took him to Magrabi on the recommendation of others on EW and he was pleased with the service. Here is the number 44238888. We had an appt for first thing on a Sat a.m. and there was no waiting. He saw three different people, one for the sight test - the one with the letters, one to examine the actual eyes and then one to calculate the prescription. I thought it was a very thorough exam for 300 QR. they do not do glasses on sight but they have a shop in CC and one on bring near salwa.

My Advice- get a dog...you meet all sorts of lovely ladies on the dog Facebook forums and walking their dogs on wakra, etc. :) Other than that...post that you want to do something on here and I am sure that at least 2 or 3 people will respond that are in a similar situation...as in, I think it is easier to meet up with people that are in the same situation as yourself as opposed to be people that have already formed their circle of friends or that are in different situations i.e. no kids, working, etc The only "group" I found to be worth my while was the QPWN - Qatar Professional Women's Networking group which meets last Thur of the month at random places https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=118883148218821 I was so happy to meet other like minded ladies and to find out that Doha didn't only consist of the Expat version of "Ladies of much leisure" - (no offence anyone). I would probably never give this group a chance back home thinking maybe it was "too professional" for me but the alternative (coffee mornings) was out of the question for me :) (again-no offence, just not my cup of, err, tea) I have met a few ladies off this board (in person)...and they have all turned out to be nice and helpful :) Beware of the Pilots Wives - just kidding - just kidding ;) not really but...just saying Can you tell I need to be leaving Doha soon?? I used to hate people like me on the message boards with their bitterness and cynicism...anyway, just post on the board you want to do something...I go to work nowadays and besides, I'm a negative influence so you'll be better off to find someone all 'new' and 'bright eyed and cheery' - or a Pilot's wife (LOL just kidding again) - and if you get really bored at home on your own...just read the Dubai Forum, it is way more interesting!!!

What are we talking for a men's suit? My DH looks good in an off the rack Kenneth Cole so I want to know if it's worth it to have it copied or just buy another one... Bechamel, how much was the suit for your Niece? Do they have the fabric there or do you have to go get it somewhere else? Did she take one to be copied or from scratch AND can you give me directions from my house? (Sheraton r/a) :)

All the friends in the world do not make my DH's work bearable :( I like it here, but I like it anywhere. I have tons of friends all over Doha, we never have a boring weekend and the money is OK - as in we are able to save a lot more than back home and our housing here is totally free. I work as well so that is just the icing on the cake...None of this can make DH's job and the things he puts up with here, any better :( I know every work place has its downside but honestly, the stuff he puts up with here... So Spinjoy, if you're asking about Doha for yourself...yes, it is what you make of it and as long as you are willing to get yourself out, you will be fine here I would think...I would just advise anyone to really research the company they are going to work for and how they treat their employees both at work and their families during the expat experience.

we had something like this... http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Network-Camera-Pet-BLC1A/dp/B000EXVTJY back home when we went on holiday - just to see the cats... it looks like an ordinary webcam, it is really but has software to tell it to record for a period of time every time there is movement in the room and then email the footage to you. You could turn it on live "remotely" as well. there are programs to turn your existing pc or laptop cam into a security cam - google it :) good luck edited by ccdoha on 19/10/2011

Piklz - yes - lots of up and down (from the bike seat)...I'm new to it but it seems like the best workout for your time and effort. I like it because you can go at your own pace if you have to... if you want to try it out...you should def go to the class at the Beverly Hills Tower at 10am on a sat. Its only a few ladies and the instructor is really encouraging. It's 70 qr if you only pay for one class but at least you can get a good feel for it in a non intimidating environment.

where do you get Shiseido here? I haven't tried this brand before. I would like to try it on my sensitive skin. In my early 30's I used estee lauder but they changed the potion and I have super super sensitive skin, especially under my eyes. I read an article about Clarins and the Queen of Eng. and tried to switch to those products but all too "strong" for me. Bareminerals has skin products now but I haven't seen them here but I am sure they are all good for you like the make-up/ minerals. I recently tried to do some research (approaching 40) and one thing I read that if you can stand an alpha hydroxy then that is great for aging. At the moment...I love anything Aveda but they don't have it here and Aramax apparently doesn't ship liquids so I stock up when home but don't get to try new things 'as and when'. Aveda products are all natural - for the most part and feel great. I also got a bunch of clinique samples from buying stuff over summer in the UK and I am liking the repairwear for under eyes. I don't really have a lot of wrinkles so I can't tell if it's doing me any good yet but it's not burning my skin so that's always a plus...I couldn't decide on a night cream so I just bought a good old faithful Olay regenerist night cream. Again, it doesn't bother my sensitive skin so at least I can recommend it for that. edited by ccdoha on 19/10/2011

what's the latest in hair these days? I've been to glow a few times - not thrilled but it seems to be the cheapest around WB - about 550 for cut and highlights OR cut and color. Has anyone been to Lucy yet? I don't mind paying more but I need some WOW. I've been wanting to try Ramada but the drive...(*whine whine whine*) and 920 QR is more than I paid at my snooty Aveda Salon in the US.

I absolutely cannot stand that site because there is so mush rubbish on it but is that where everyone buys/sells stuff??? I agree 100% with Dottymum. I am in WB by the Four Seasons and I LOVE it here and could not imagine living in any other area I have been to. My friend lives next door to QIPCO at Golf Gardens and has positive things to say. We prefer to go to her compound for BBQ's because it is very relaxed with good people all around. Her teen can ride his bike to QIPCO and back as it is way off the main road and no traffic, etc. I love that the traffic is so light on this end except for the Arch r/a during the 'rush hour' commutes. I think it's nice to be able to pop over to Katara (Cultural Village) so easily and you can also do exercise classes at the intercon and Beverly Hills Tower. I know that golf gardens was renting, they are 4 bedroom and I have heard 18K and 21K. It seems high to me but in comparison, I think they are worth it. It would be a super easy commute to the new ACS (American School) or to ISL- International School of London. edited by ccdoha on 17/10/2011

If you don't find anyone here...ask around at the school your child attends. I think teachers are willing to do this, although the rates are extortion, but technically they are not "allowed" to work for cash - as no one is so you have to be discreet about it.

contact tda uk government website, this is what they do is tell you the different 'routes into teaching' in the UK and can explain about the placements, etc also, I am pretty "clued in" to online learning (my MA is in Ed Tech) and I have never heard of a distinction between online learning and distance learning. I admit I even googled it too see if I was missing something and I don't see anything :( I think the more important information is the accreditation. As in, if you get a degree from a school with what is viewed as 'not as reputable accreditation' then you cannot use that degree to further your education later, i.e. if you get BA from the online degree from University of Phoenix in the USA although you can work and be a teacher, etc etc but you can never take that BA and get a MA from say University of Florida as the BA is not recognised as an "accredited degree". However, if you get an online BA with University of California which is on the more reputable accreditation system, you can get a MA anywhere - pretty much in the world. I imagine it is the same in the UK. as for the PGCE - I'm pretty sure a PGCE is a PGCE. I would strongly suggest that instead of a PGCE you consider an MA. You never know where life is going to take you and an MA is much more transferable worldwide and will also put you on a higher pay scale - it does in the USA at least. even if you are a qualified teacher from say the US you have to go through the QTS process and you have up to 4 years I think to complete it... edited by ccdoha on 27/09/2011 edited by ccdoha on 27/09/2011

OK is it possible?? I know I have asked this before...but this time WE ARE GOING! Say 5 nov-11 nov A couple of weeks ago I did my research on Maldives but then got distracted with work and now prices have shot up. All I want is a relaxed beach (for the view and fresh air) with no one around, preferably a spa bath/jacuzzi. I am not really interested in activities (I'm from Florida, been there done that). It is our wedding anniv and EID!!! I am open to any destination but I have been looking at all-inclusive. The cheapest I have found in the maldives is about $3000 usd, spa bath, beach, all inc plus flights which right now are up to 4000 qar each ewwwww for economy I am really open to anywhere...anyone have a house on the beach somewhere?? edited by ccdoha on 27/09/2011

I've done a bit of hunting around for different things and I have found that anything considered a controlled substance is only at the Psychiatric Hospital next to Megamart or of course Hamad. I was told by someone that in order to get ADHD meds you have to go to see a Dr at the Psychiatric Hospital. To do that you have to get a referral from any of the medical centers. Hope that helps :)
