I have heard this around here at DHs work but I really think they are distinguishing between online universities as opposed to a regular accredited university that offer online degreea as an extra offering. For instance in the UK there is open universty and no I do not think that would be acceptable but the university of Leeds now offers some programs online and these should be perfectly acceptable. When you get your degree from a reputable, accredited university online it doesn't say "online degree" on it. Every university offers some form of online study these days so they couldnt label each one of them differently. Just stick with the big universities and check their accreditation. Online MA's are very common in the USA where most employers pay for your tuition. Even though you may live down the street from the university, it helps people working full time to attend. <em>edited by ccdoha on 24/09/2011</em>

Online education and distance learning programs have come along way in the last few years! If you google ~ online MA, education, UK ~ you'll hit the jackpot. It used to be that school required face to face time to proctor exams but that is no longer the case. Many reputable universities are offering degrees that are completely online. As for getting the an ED dgree or brushing up on a subject...I haven't checked over the UK req lately but I can tell you that in the US (all states have independent education rules but generally)...ANYONE can teach with a Bachelors degree in ANYTHING. If the school requires a teacher to be "Highly Qualified" then you basically have to pass a test in the subject area (and for that you just read the book). i.e. in Florida, the state gives you 2 years to take a few extra classes in addition to your BA like child psychology, classroom management, assessment and testing, etc while you teach and pass a bunch of test saying you can read and write and know your subject area. At the end of the 2 years you are then a Qualified Teacher. In the UK, it is even easier as they have many "routes into teaching" check out http://www.tda.gov.uk/ As for teaching in Qatar - I'll just state facts - at Newton International School on the d-ring last year, you did not need to be a qualified teacher to teach EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stages - Ages 3 and 4) or even have a Bachelors Degree. It is the same at Al Maha and I have heard Doha British Montessori. In the UK I think that you do have to be a QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) for age 4 but I am not certain. In Florida you have to have a min of 2 years of University - AA degree to teach 4 year olds VPK (Voluntary Pre K) I do not think that you can teach ages 5-18 without a teacher qualification and 3 years experience in Qatar now because the SEC (Supreme Education Council) is implementing these requirements and even though you will have sponsorship through your husband, in order to teach here you still have to have to be approved by the SEC Having said that...when I first got into teaching in the USA, I spoke to the county educ office and I suggested I was interested in a 4 or 5 year old class having never taught before to try it out. The laughed at me and said that the younger they are - the more you actually need to know what you are doing and that 4 and 5 are the most difficult for an untrained teacher. Obviously some schools here don't seem to know that and think anyone that speaks English can teach :( I would say there will be openings coming up as realistically there will be class sizes that go up and down over the next few months as schools reevaluate their numbers AND let's face it, there will teachers that hate it here and go home! :) If you are determined to give it a go...I would try looking at Starfish Lane. Even though they are a day care really, I have heard that they offer the EYFS curriculum and from what I have heard they offer outstanding training and professional development. The wages will be a lot lower to start I imagine but I feel that the training is invaluable and you will not just be thrown in the deep end to sink or swim. If you do go to a school, probably an international school will hire you and the wages from what I know of will be around 7000 to 10000 QAR per month. OK sorry its a bit long winded and jumping all over the place - multi tasking :)

We looked around for one last year with no luck...we wound up getting a water cooler thing. They do have the filters that screw onto your sink at Carrefour. I use Safa water delivery 44606699, they deliver the water once a week. You buy a coupon booklet and the water bottles come out to about 6.50 QR each. You can buy a counter top cooler thing at carrefour for about 45 QR but it doesn't cool the water.

I don't know of any apts in that area, the closest I know of would be holiday villa- I think they are serviced apts- it would be about 15-20 min drive to park house from there. I think most serviced apts are in west bay near cc and IMHO would be a nightmare to drive to parkhouse, but people do it. You should be able to ship your stuff, This topic is always on the board and myself and many others did not need an RP to ship stuff, we shipped our stuff before we even left the UK. Depending on dh's comp, it may take a while to get an appt for his medical, I think sept is a busy time, but after that it should only take a week or so. Sometimes it takes months. If you're worried, you should consider paying for a private medical for DH.

There is a little Thai restaurant kind of across from jarir book store, sorry if it has already been mentioned but I don't know the name if it. It is a little "hole in the wall" but a friend was taken there by someone who lives here and is Thai so we think it's fine. Out front there is a sign that says "massage" one way and "restaurant" the other direction I like the noodle house but i don't think their green curry is any good and certainly not like any green curry I've ever had, I don't even think they put coconut milk in it! And if you ask for not too spicy, it is still ridiculously hot.

I take my dog here http://dohavets.com/ and it is more than I paid for a nicer looking vet office in the states but I find the rates to be the same as the UK. I am happy with the service at Doha vets, it's a bit rustic and I had my doubts but so far so good. I chose them purely based on location.

There is a beauty supply shop here but I cannot remember the name of it...it is on the salwa road if you drive past the ramada towards Saudi...I would say it's about 1/2 mile or so on the right hand side. It's in a little strip mall on the end. The girls at glo told me about it when I was looking for a specific ccolor of nail polish. I know it's closed fri a.m.s. Sorry I don't have more info.

I know 2 FO's that came late last year and both get an allowance and live in villas where they choose. Mostly because they both have dogs and I'm not sure they could have dogs otherwise...I know another FO that bought in zig zag so he has the allowance and it covers his mortgage, he's been here a couple years though.

I have just started going to the Beverly hills tower for spinning classes. they are 70 qar for one class and I didn't have to join. I bought a 12 class package for 600 QAR and I can use this on Spinning, pilates, yoga and Zumba, which starts Monday 5pm. The pack of 12 can be used over 3 months. They also offer tae kwon do for kids and adults but those were 80/each or 8 for 600 I heard of a 5 a side ladies football league in wakra awhile back, if you are interested I could look for the details. I have just seen they are doing Zumba at the intercon also on Mon evenings for 30 qar/members 40 qar/non mem <em>edited by ccdoha on 06/09/2011</em>

I have only been to the admirals club once but it was very low key and had big screens and I remember thinking it would be a good place to watch a match. Same at the golf club. Neither one were "happening" places to meet people at the 7pm-10pm time slots that I was there but again, seemed like a good place to watch a match

Depending on the position, you should find out what your housing or housing allowance would be and I would focus on having a look to make sure you will be happy living in said housing...If you don't live in the staff accommodation, the highest housing allowance I have heard of is 12000 QAR and you may or may not be happy to live in an area that cost 12000 QAR to rent. It depends what hotel you stay in to know if you will have access to regular taxis (Kharwa). They are cheap but try to haggle with you some times, they are harmless and you just have to be firm. If you are not staying on a main road, it may be hard to get a taxi. It is not like back home where you can ring for one, the hotel will either have a driver that as said below will be expensive or they will call someone that will probably be expensive...use the fox limo and negotiate a rate - usually about 35-40 QAR one way. Kharwa is much cheaper if you can catch one and you make sure they put the meter on.

Just wanted to add that I see they opened a new store in CC that has mac stuff. It's right above C4 by the store that sells CAT shoes. I have the 32 gb ipad which is more than what I need for me because I don't travel a lot and I don't sync my entire macbook to it so I only keep stuff that is current and I am using. I don't tend to buy the highest spec when it comes to technology as I like to get new stuff when it comes out. DH's ipad 2 is only 16 gb and he is happy with that...

16 gb is plenty. I looked at mine the other day for a friend and here is what I found... I only have about 20 books which is about .05 GB and I don't put my entire music collection on it, just play list, so less than 1 GB of music and about 2GB of photos, so with apps, the operating system and a few other things, I have only used about 10 GB :) In iTunes it is good about letting you sync just the things you want so you are not storing your "entire" computer on your iPad. I have quite a few apps. as for accessories, if you have children I would def buy that thingy that goes on the back of your headrest in the car so the kids can use it as a movie player in the back seat!! <em>edited by ccdoha on 04/09/2011</em>

when you take the pet as accompanied, they should only charge you for the weight...just like an extra piece of luggage. When I flew my dog on Qatar as acc bagg - my actual suitcase weighed around 20 kg and my dog and crate weighed around 18 kgs so they said I could get away with 28kg of allowance without penalty so I had to pay for 10 kgs. QA charges 20gbp per extra kilo. I am pretty sure if you send the pet unaccompanied - it is totally different as it has to go through stricter clearances on both sides. When I sent the dog unaccompanied from US-UK it cost me $1400 usd I would at least check with Janet at Qatar Pet Relocators and let her do the paperwork to leave...and she can advise on the other stuff. I was trying to retrace my steps of where I would have purchased it as he usually goes with me to do the shopping and he obviously wasn't there that day....thinking, thinking, thinking...*touch* maybe I'll get a vibe...OR SEE THE PRICE TAG, doh! I finally caved an placed an order online a few days ago from the US store...just an FYI, they do accept Qatari credit card and they do ship to aramax as I already have email notifications that the stuff is on the way!! VS online has a sale on now 3/$30 on panties!!! free shipping (to your US box of course) for orders of $100 or more :-) AS for this store...my friend told be that in the ME they are owned by a group that owns, H&M, La Senza, etc so they probably won't expand the VS product line to be in direct competition with La Senza, just pick a few popular items. They need to get the Body By Victoria line over here!!!!!!!

I understood it was to the ankle and to the wrist for Ramadan so that's what I'm doing...why put a bad name out there for all the westerners. I never heard that, even my muslim friends don't do that during Ramadan(apart from the ones that always do), but definitely shoulders/knees and no cleavage. You're probably right, I'm probably overdoing it - but I'm OK with that :) Just got back from hols last night, and this thread shows very clearly..I am back in Qatar! lol As usual, I find it amazing how people judge others, in general, and apparently particular...clothing is such an important part of one's demeanor (sp? ). rofl. I think the only thing being judged here is someones (lack of) common sense...the pure fact of the matter is all expats get judged by the local community so I don't fee that I should have to "suffer" because a fellow expat chooses to disregard/disrespect the local culture. Whether the locals choose to tolerate or be liberal about it or not... I don't get what demeanor has to do with it...as you could have a lovely quiet demeanor and still be dressed like a Tart! :) <em>edited by ccdoha on 07/08/2011</em>

that's a thought VR Doha...anything liquid like lotions you like, hair products, soaps. I know its silly but DH is allergic to a few soaps and deodorants and we'll stock up. You CANNOT ship liquids with aramax so bring anything you need with you. I really like Aveda products and you cannot get those here. I would buy a good face cream with SPF in the UK - I am not sure there are many though but possibly for summer. Actually, I would look for any makeup with SPF in it like Bare Minerals, etc. I see a lot of creams here with "whitener" in them, a feature I'm not particularly interested in...There is not a lot of variety for salon quality hair products and in this climate it's good to have good product. A good brown eyeliner is impossible to find, had to send DH to Sephora (and the Aveda store) in Paris last time he went! ;-) Last thing...I actually SWEAR by Crocs shoes!!!! I only wore them to take the dog out before moving here and as house slippers but I honestly live in them now. They make cute ones these days and they are so COMFY and because you are so hot all the time here and they are plastic like, you can just rinse them off! Some styles are acceptable for work! They do sell them here but only a few random styles/sizes/places. http://www.crocs.co.uk/home/homepage,en_GB,pg.html LOVE LOVE LOVE

I believe the highest you can get if you pay directly is 4 mb. Because t is adsl in Doha (no cable broadband) and because our experience is that companies always seem to do things on the cheap here...the adsl signal is seriously affected by how many users are on it and how far you are from the providers equipment. I would never use adsl in the USA or UK and always had cable broadband (time warner, virgin media) but we have no choice here :(. It is what it is...4 mb is extremely slow compared to the US or UK so you just have to get used to it :( Your tower may offer "free" Internet as ours did until recently when they just decided to turn it off and not tell us, and then you can subscribe directly but it depends on the telephone lines as the adsl signal is dependent on that so living in a tower can get complicated ( here in Doha). So bottom line is evn if The provider does offer a higher speed to businesses you are likely to experience a worse connection during peak times from everybody on it and then everyone downloading movies!

I don't know anyone that has tried here but I don't see why it wouldn't work here, as the idea is to be able to use it anywhere...the only problem could be your internet connection may have issues and interrupt the streaming but many people here report to use vee pee nnnn's so they are connecting in the same sort of manner...

How could one live without a tumble dryer????????? ;) I would bring cheapy curtains and shears from the likes of IKEA if you can just to get you started in case you move into a place with nothing. There are stores that you can buy ready made in but it just depends if you are going to be the adventurous type and get out there, etc. You could certainly sell them to someone on here for face value if you wound up not using them! Our place is furnished but it lacks any chest of drawers, and very few side tables, and is very bland. Again, I am sure that anything you brought here and didn't need you could store for awhile as everyone here has plenty of storage I am sure or you could sell on. My place is very basic and beige so I could use lots of pillows, throws, and stuff for the walls but you can get it here inexpensive if you want but only a few stores if your not picky. I have great storage shelf/racks that I brought from IKEA that I could probably sell for double what I paid when I leave as everyone eyes them!! They are nothing fantastic but just practical for storing stuff in the spare rooms. ALso, small kitchen type storage racks that you might put pans on, etc in case you don't have a lot of cupboard space, buthers block. It's just hard to say because I imagine it depends where you are going to live... It sounds silly but anything that is ON SALE for summer back home is probably here and not on sale...like if you have beach coolers or chairs, ice packs for the cooler. Summer outside picnic/crockery type stuff. some sort of outside speaker system or good iPod docking station as you are sure to be outside BBQ'ing with friends. :) Here is a random list I sent to a friend coming from the states with 2 teenagers next week: bras/panties - if you like a certain brand best to stock up any allergy free creams/makeup/deodorant opi nail polish - very limited here if you have a fav colour bathing suit/board shorts - very few places to buy capris - no shorts for women sunglasses - for you and boys boys hats - if they like a certain type or team aleve - they dont sell that here alkaseltzer - they dont sell that here pepcid-they dont sell that here ear plugs - if you are sensitive to noise at night as we are in the flight path and next to building sites eye mask - the curtains here are a pain to close so I just leave them open at night and wear an eye mask to sleep crystal light mix - can only get a few flavors at about $6.00/box before we left, we gave my mom power of atty over us so that she could go do any banking, or legal docs, etc for us if we needed her to. I bought a form online for like $10 and just filled it in. Say you need some records from the high school or something needs to be signed, etc. go get all your medical records for any prescriptions

We know a few folks (western) that pay in the 1200QR range for a lot of work and then some that pay in the 2000QR range for not so much work, so I think it really varies...on what you think is right and can afford. We know (not like) one couple that boasts of only paying the maid 1200 QR and the DH is in a very good job here (upper mgmt) and they have 2 primary school aged children that require A LOT of work. I personally don't see it as a sign of success to be excited about how little you can get away with paying the maid -the primary care giver of your children (plus full house responsibilities). It's not the fact that they pay the maid so little that is horrible to us, it's the fact that they think they are so CLEVER for paying less than they can afford. I realise that some people may not be able to afford more and that is a personal choice but I feel the work should be adjusted - sort of like an aupair. I have only heard of a couple maids working for arab families that get paid in the 700-900 range :( ...just saying. edited by ccdoha on 03/08/2011 <em>edited by ccdoha on 03/08/2011</em>

FINALLY - Ok so they said it depends on whether or not the company DH works for has an agreement with a service... They only provide beds, washing machine, microwave, hotplate (I'm assuming tv) but NO linens, cutlery, crockery She said if DH's company has an agreement with a service then sometimes it is provided and she asked what company it was. Here is the number to the business office 974 44122039 Let me know if I can help further, I am here til 8 Aug and can pop back over (have to pick up the dry cleaning in a couple days anyway) or I can call PLEASE PLEASE don't be shy and if you want to borrow a starter kit for a few weeks I am totally 100% able and willing to do that, we will be gone til the 28th anyway! We have plenty of stuff because we shipped our stuff not realizing that we too would be here with NOTHING so we had to buy starter stuff to hold us over til our shipment arrived and it would just be NONSENSE for your DH to have to buy starter stuff too!! It only cost a few Riyals to have a duvet dry cleaned so I can have everything nice and clean for your DH no trouble at all!!! :) you can email me on cc doha @ hotmail dot co dot uk if you want to :) <em>edited by ccdoha on 03/08/2011</em>

I arrived in sept last year and weather wise it was fine. Now is pretty horrible. I know it seems minor but last night they stopped serving alcohol (I thought we had one more day) which affected our dinner plans - tapas/wine cellar. So little things like that just don't help!!!!! DH is off but the mall is closed from 1pm to 730 pm and most places I want to go for lunch! If you are living in Qatar airways housing you should be ok with coming sooner than later, if DH has to sort out housing, def come later! :) This year some govt offices ( well dh's anyway) are observing 2 weeks of EID so it is hard to say what will be open from sept1-11 around here as far as getting anything processed!

I have seen at least 3, 2 being at golf gardens. I've seen one at a school but they had that cover over the top like you see ver playgrounds and car parks.
