That is not entirely true. It is up to sister-in-law's insurance company. My brother and his family came out last Christmas and he drove my car. I'm with RSA. I contacted them and they said he could drive with a valid UK licence. I telephoned twice and got the same answer both times with RSA so was satisfied with the answer. Eeeek, don't take their word for it, no matter how many times they tell you over the phone! I am pretty sure there was a thread on here some time ago about someone whose insurance company kept saying it was fine, the visitor had an accident, and guess what? Yup, they changed their mind and wouldn't pay up and as they had nothing in writing they didn't have a leg to stand on, think they may have got in trouble with the police as well as they also said it wasn't allowed! Maybe someone might recognise the story and clarify...

Some drivers have no clue how big a gap they should leave, (a bit like people in queues...!) and some are just ignorant! If you are in the slow lane and they can easily over take you then get 'mirror blindness' and totally ignore them, don't be pushed into going faster, it is you that will end up with the ticket. As long as you are not doing the speed limit in the fast lane and annoying others then don't let anyone bully you. Don't worry, you will soon pick up a thick skin and won't even notice the idiots unless they are being [i'> really spectacularly[/i'> idiotic! :)

We had a few nights here, it was lovely. Breakfast was fabulous. Restaurants/bars were a 10 mins walk away. It is on a bit of a hill though, so you will get some exercise. www.derwenthouse.co.za/hotel%20rooms. the only comment I would say is to ask them for their largest room, perhaps room no 9. The one we had was a bit small. They also have an apartment - check it out. edited by April Flower on 23/09/2011 I can second Derwent House! We have stayed there a few times and love the place and the girls that run it, couldn't be more helpful!

The last I heard holidaymakers can't marry in Dubai, Have the rules changed recently???? Have a gander on Google for weddings in Dubai, seems lots of companies think you can... am sure there must be some wedding planners on EW that can clarify for sure though.

I think there is a Tag Heuer shop in Dubai Mall, they should have the full range, although they might not be the cheapest, might give you a place to start to see the choices. Not sure of any other ones.

My Mum has kept all mine and my sisters teeth... we are now either side of 40 and she still has them (along with a lock of our hair from when we were babies and our pony tails from when we had our hair cut from really long to short...!). My sister's kids are now just at the age to start losing theirs and she has started a tooth collection too.... bleugh, no idea what I shall do when my LO starts losing hers...

I've got one for my three year old daughter who has really knotty hair. It seems to work fairly well, certainly pulls less than an ordinary brush, but it's not quite the miracle worker I was hoping it to be as it still pulls a bit, but then I suppose that's inevitable. Sounds positive - has it damaged her hair at all as I've read it causes split ends on some reviews.\\ No, no damage at all! :)

Unless the law has changed (which it may have done knowing Dubai..!), Christian expats residing in Dubai must be married in church. But then you could have a 'quickie' in church so it is all legal and then have a ceremony with all your geusts elsewhere... However, if you are just coming to Dubai on holiday then I believe you can get married in a hotel.

Hating and not liking or not wanting is very different. I love, love, love cats, have had them all my adult life, all rescued ones but I would never personally choose to have the dark calico ones. If a friend had one, I am sure I would like it, but knew an nasty one years ago and have subconsciously tarred them all with the same brush (sorry to all those lovely, gentle dark calico's out there, of which I am sure there are millions...). So if the lady has an aversion to black ones for some reason (association with witches or other things) then that is fine, she is probably absolutely lovely and there are lots of non-black cats out there that need a home, so no worries. It's only like some people liking Yorkshire Terriers and others Great Danes.... just because you don't like small dogs doesn't make you a bad person... :)

Since no-one knows the full facts of the tenant it is hard to judge how flexible the OP should be. The OP thinks the tenant hasn't been with the company long, but I don't think knows for 100%, he may have worked for the company in another country or location. She says he has been on 'holiday', maybe he went away to visit a sick relative or search for work and didn't go to lay on the beach or ski in the Alps. Just because he hasn't given the OP his detailed life history doesn't make him into a bad guy. Also, just because he regotiated a lower rent because he paid in one cheque does not mean he knew what was going to happen. Lots of people use the offer of one cheque to negotiate lower rent, were they ALL planning on doing a runner, lol? Plus, we are often hearing on here of people who have come to Dubai with a job offer, set themselves up with a home etc and then are made redundant and are having difficulty with their landlords and they get tons of sympathy and "sod the greedy landlord" messages, now the shoe is on the other foot it is "sod the dodgy tenant". Hhhhmmm.... spot the discrepancy anyone? The siuation isn't fair on either party but as a human (and a landlord) I would just stick to what I felt was legal and morally right. If the tenant's name is on the contract I would simply get a leaving date from him, work out the remaining portion of rent, work out the three month penalty from the date he first made you aware he would be leaving and give him the rest back. It is then his job to negotiate with his company monies owing between them. It is not the landlords problem. Neither is it the tenants problem that the landlord may have an empty house. That's the risk both sides take in the renting market. At least he hasn't just done a runner, leaving the house wrecked and hugs DEWA bills - which he may do if you start being unreasonable. Personally, there is no way I would go on holiday, delay giving his money due, or be awkward in any way. Have a heart, he may have given up everything for a chance on a new life which may now be crumbling around him. I would have to be human and do what I could to help, after all it may be ME next time...

Sorry, but just to let you know - what you are asking is illegal. A maid cannot be on her own or her family sponsorship. It is also illegal to 'share' a maid. The only way to get a maid is to either sponsor her yourself or get one through an agency. Hope that helps. Ps. Not sure that 9am to 6pm, 5 days a week constitutes 'part time'... <em>edited by Cheeky Monkey on 20/09/2011</em>

Definitely not a myth, haha.... I fostered 5 puppies, by the time they left they had put several large holes in a rug and removed most of the fringe edges, 'rounded' all four of the square corners of a lovely coffee table, chewed the footrest bars on EIGHT chair legs, ripped about 6 different blankets and duvets that I put in their beds... oh and two low CONCRETE window ledges needed filling... wouldn't have missed the experience for all the world though! :D

I think sometimes it is helpful to point out there have been threads before as they may have useful information / opinions in them, either suggesting the OP does a search or by actually giving the links if you are feeling particularly helpful. BUT, it does depend on how it's worded and how the comment is meant! A helpful "If you do a quick search on [i'>'subject matter[/i'>' you may find more info as it has been discussed before" is better that "Yawn, been done to death why can't newbies use the search function first...?" which is just rude and not in the EW spirit, especially since us 'oldies' know how un-user friendly the search function can sometimes be!

I doubt it is a scam, they are not asking for anything. I get wrong number texts sometimes, just like phone calls. I usually send a quick text back just saying sorry but they have the wrong number. I tend to get a text back saying, oops, sorry, thanks for letting me know. They may be wondering why the other person hasn't replied...

If there was a fire, would you really want to break off your evacuation at a random higher level or would you want to get out in the right place? The stairs, if indeed they've been planned as fire exits only, shouldn't be used ad-hoc, so I can understand why they don't have exit handles on upper levels. Sometimes these doors will also be alarmed, to notify whoever of misuse, but I doubt they'd wire them up here. The stairwell and doors *should* be fire-safe for at least 60 minutes and as such, in the event of a fire, you would get to them sharpish and get out of the building. I agree in principal regarding the theory of not having handles, but what happens if you live on an upper floor, hear the fire alarm, head into the stairwell (locking yourself in bascially if there are no handles to get out again) and the fire happens to be on a lower floor and some numpty has propped the stairwell fire door open (let's face it - it happens, especially in Dubai!). You are effectively dead, even if it's only from the smoke inhalation and not the actual fire. I wouldn't live in a building like that, no way! Don't the fire crews need to enter the building via the stairwells to tackle the fire without having to axe the door down to enter a level? They can't always do it all from the outside. And indeed, as someone else pointed out, just from the inconvenience side - what happens if the lifts aren't working on just an ordinary day, also happens a lot. How do you get back to your apartment if you can't get open the stairwell doors from the inside..?

I must be really lucky, when we agreed to have a child I said right up front that it was a 50/50 job. Yes, he is the bread winner, goes out and works long hours and I am a stay at home mum, but just because I don't leave the house doesn't mean I don't work the same hours... When he comes home child care becomes 50/50 and he always puts LO to bed and reads her a story whilst I tidy up / load the dishwasher etc. Every Saturday morning he takes her for a walk to the newsagent to pick up his paper and they go to the park, they are usually out for about 2-3 hours. This gives me a lie in and a quiet start to the day with a big pot of coffee. He gets some daddy/daughter time and I get a break. Works a treat and we are all happy! I guess you just have to explain that just because your job doesn't pay doesn't mean you don't work as hard as he does and if he feels that he needs to wind down after a day in the office, then remind him that you never actually leave the office and you need to wind down too... Good luck, child care issues can be tricky!

Friends always stay at the Commodore which is in the Waterfront and seem to like it, I can't say as we have never stayed there. If you don't mind being a short drive away then we always stay at Derwent House, (http://www.derwenthouse.co.za/). The ladies who own it are English and are absolutely wonderful, can't do enough for you and the place has a wonderful comfy feeling but very clean and modern too! And as for their breakfast pancakes, yumyum! And no, I have no connection to the place other than being a very happy guest!

A week in Spain to watch the football at Camp Nou...i don't distrust him in the least, I suppose I just find it weird, because i would never be able to leave him and go travel all by myself. Just wanted to get a different perspective from you ladies In that case, yes, definitely, my DH used to go to the Hong Kong 7's rugby without me as I was working and couldn't take the time off and I use to go home at a different time on my own for a week or so. Can't help with MIL problem, they are odd creatures bless them, ... I do feel sorry for the OP at having to put up with such overt interfereance from her MIL. As one who falls into CM's "odd creature" category, just would like to say some of us don't interfere with our kids marriages, don't overstep into territory that is not ours to tred, don't domineer and take control of their children don't do things like giving them haircuts and chocolate without their parents consent, I would never abuse my position as a GM in that way, some of us "odd creatures" know well enough that its never good policy to place ourselves in the middle of any marriage that we are not a party to. And please remember we are awarded this "distinction" of MIL sometimes quite suddenly, and just as we all become parents without having any prior experience for that role we also become mother's in law having had no working knowledge at it either, many of us do our best to steer a friendly and just distant enough course from our kids spouses and the wise among us learn along the way often treading on eggs shells because we do value good and happy relationships with our daughter's in law. As a former DIL myself I see now that life works both ways and in the end we all find ourselves at the other side of the equation. Didn't mean to offend, honest, maybe I should have put a ;) after my comment, but used "bless them" instead, it wasn't meant in a nasty way, more of a gentle nod to differing views of generations / cross cultural marriages! My own mother is of course my husband's MIL, she loves me, him, our DD, even my cat, haha, (and she can't stand cats), but she sometimes ventures forth with the oddest ideas, as no doubt I shall when I become a MIL... Some MIL's DO interfere or offer 'advice' (My own MIL included), mostly with the best of intentions but sometimes through nastiness, I am sure you are one of the former! Really didn't mean to upset all those wonderful MIL's out there, wish I had one!!

Be warned, if you don't live in the UK, are not even British and use a UK licence to hire or drive a car and you have to claim on insurance and they make some enquiries... well effectively you are driving 1). Without a licence as it is technically not valid and 2). With no insurance as you need a valid licence for the insurance to be valid, also they would not pay out. Unlikely I know, a lot of "if's and but's", but if you are a European National driving on a UK licence they are likely to at least ask why and where you [i'>actually[/i'> live...

I love my cat loads, had her for years and she gets lots of cuddles and tickles, but kisses... erm NO, not overly hygienic if you are trying to avoid cat-related diseases! You may not be kissing their mouth (or you may be, lol), but they lick their bits and then the rest of themselves, so you might as well clean out their lit tray with your hands if you are kissing them...

I have two words that will solve a lot of problems for these kids who blame the government for not 'giving' them jobs: National Service. Solves the 'youth' job problem and will solve the discipline problem too. It wouldn't be a long term solution as the army / navy /RAF isn't for everyone but it might make most of them grow up and come out of service with some self respect and new eyes on the world. Instead of paying dole, the government should put the money into service wages. Sadly I also blame the parents as that is where kids learn how to respect or disrespect others. A lot of kids today seem to think they are 'owed' everything, whose fault is that? Also, as others have said, there ARE jobs out there, might not be a perfect job but it gives you self worth and teaches the value of saving until you can afford something instead of blaming the government for not giving you enough money on a plate for a flat screen TV.

DH and I still deciding whether or not to have baby #2 and im 37 ?? Same here, I'm nearly forty... When we decided to have one, we always said we would have two... but... My LO is 3 now and although I don't mind the idea of being pregnant again (I was very lucky and had a pretty easy pregnancy), the thought of the sleepless nights and nappies again at the end of it makes me come out in a cold sweat. And the crying when they are too young to tell you what's wrong. And schooling for two children. And affording, well, everything... I'm also not a natural mother and have trouble coping with being at home with one, I think I would go demented with two. I know in time it would be better as they would have each other to play with, but I don't know if I could stay sane until that time. Seriously. Definite dilemma for me.

If so, it may be that they could also try and get their money back too and chase him privately, especially if they are also Brits...

You were discharged 5 hours after surgery? Your lucky to still be alive. In reputable clinics the protocol is 24 hours after a GA even for very minor surgery. Not if you have a GA in the UK on the NHS, my sister had GA a couple of weeks ago for gall bladder removal and she was out of hospital less than FOUR hours after she woke up... That is outrageous. I am having tummy troubles at the moment and someone suggested on this forum that it may be my gallbladder. So I was speaking to my Mum about it as she had her gall bladder removed and she was kept in for 3 days, then readmitted two days later for a further 4 days due to an infection! She is convinced it was due to her being discharged too early! Quite normal for the NHS these days I'm afraid! :(

That's a Pixar movie - That's all about monsters jumping out of closets and scaring poor children, just to get their fuel, with a corrupt boss who sanctions kidnapping a child and torturing her to get screams out of her... lovely!!! okay, maybe I overreacted, I just wanted to know what my LO are watching. as I always didn't like the story line of Pinokkio, Alice in wonderland, Peter Pan, and the list goes on and on... and that when I was a child, then I become a mum, and wanted to know why did I hated those stories, I re read it again as an adult, then I made my own mind that it's unsutable stories for little ones, although later on they can read it themselves, if you don't believe me, please do some research on those (children stories) as they are categorized. why do you not feel they are suitable ? i was brought up on fairy stories/disney and in my opinion they are about as harmless as you can get... especially the way they carry a moral or message such as Pinnochio showing it's bad to lie.. as for pinoccio - thank you for correcting the name - it's about a kid who had been loured to sneak from school, drink alcohol, then been r*pped by the circus manager to be sold as a s*x slave! for peter pan whom is caption hock when he grow up, and how he wants to erase any think from his childhood as a lost child, that he become a bad man, and he rethink about every thing had lead him to be what he is, that he left the only good thing in his life - wendy- and let her go after he brook her heart. and for alice in wonder land, oh well, it's a journey of a girl into womanhood, and what she encounters like drugs - the wisdom from the caterpillar, and what she had to go through to be a good woman..... these kind of stories that I conceder as grown ups stories. not mentioning Cinderella, sleeping beauty and rapunzel ...... Seriously?! I think you may be searching a bit hard for those story lines... I am pretty sure they were never written with those hidden meanings. Alice in Wonderland was written in 1865, not sure drugs as we know them were a problem in those days..! Children take stories on face value, fabtasy land, why not enjoy them for that without putting modern cynicism and fears onto them? Why on earth would anyone even look for such horrid things?? <em>edited by Cheeky Monkey on 21/07/2011</em>

To be honest, the whole of AR is family friendly, it depends on what type of house you are looking for (independant villa / townhouse) and probably more importantly - your budget!. If you give an idea of what type of house you are looking for, I am sure you will get some more replies. Good luck with your search.
