No mystery in my case. Car, maid and heat. One hour in the gym doesn't make up for two walks to school and back every day, one walk to the shops and back (carrying shopping), hoovering and tidying, gardening, playing outdoors with the kids (football in the park, hide and seek in the woods, bike rides, climbing trees etc). Even my job here is more static. I really worry about the kids though. I believe that they are generally less fit than they should be. They do daily organised sport activities, but their overall lifestyle is much more sedentary. Their friends in other countries do all of the same sports plus the walks to school, games in the park etc. What can you do?

Its at MediaCity I think? Great venue..... I wouldnt go there until 8pm or so as there is lots of hanging around and it is a standing gig so you can just have a mooch around. They have bars, food outlets etc and there should be a support act and DJ before he comes on. Normally main act would come on around 9pm ish and play 2 hours. I am sure you will have a great time. Radisson Media City is just opposite and could be good option for pre or post concert drinks :) Thanks Kitten67, that's helpful.

130,000 dh is a lot for two children. You can certainly find schools for less than that. Are all your other expenses paid for (insurance, rent, utilities?) If you do spend that much, put it in perspective. Are you able to spend more than two months of salary on schooling? edited by Guinness2 on 15/10/2014 That depends on the age of the children. 65,000 dhs is not expensive for secondary.

Oh please, no! With the vastly reduced size of Safa Park, there will be no leisure space left in the area soon. How long before they develop the open beach space beside the beach park?

Funny, I googled exactly the same thing last week. The feeling I got was that the mammogram covered the whole breast and was less likely to miss anything, but for closer investigation, an ultrasound was used. It seemed to suggest that the effectiveness of the ultrasound was very dependent on the skill of the user.

I can't say that I've found mine to be particularly good, definitely not for cleaning grout. I also did quick experiment on the floor. A clean, white damp cloth was just as black as the steam mop head after cleaning a similar area of floor. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

We've just been told that our company caps the end of service payout. Basically, if you have earned too much on the company redundancy, you don't get any gratuity. Is that legal? Sorry to hijack, but if is another trick to look out for.

If I was being blackmailed by someone, the last thing I would do is invite them into my home and get drunk with them. Isn't that adding fuel to the fire? The situation sounds far more complicated than we have been told, but I hope that it is all sorted now. edited by Chewit on 25/09/2014

Reading a book isn't offensive, as long as she isn't getting too "involved" at the school gates. with one of teachers ... ? Now now, I think that you are letting your imagination run away with you.

Would any of you share who your advisor is? I have an eight year Generali plan, 5 years in and it hasn't performed very well. I haven't lost any money, it seems to be worth what I've paid in give take a $ or two, but it certainly hasn't added any value. Our Generali plan has less money than we put in 4 years ago :(

Try not to worry too much about the prizes at primary school, I promise you that things balance out in time. My DS is a bright kid, but got absolutely no recognition in primary. He was regularly told to wind his neck in and shut up. In fairness, he was probably arrogant and definitely lazy. Now, in secondary school, he wins awards and prizes every year. He has been given the "geek" label that he always deserved. Though it was painful at the time, he may have benefitted from being levelled when he was younger. DD is the complete opposite. Tries hard, does what she is told and achieves fairly well across the board. She was loved by her primary school, but has failed to make a mark in secondary. With around 150 students, there is always someone just that bit better than her, so no prizes. I am very glad that she had that early boost to her confidence in her younger years. edited by Chewit on 25/06/2014

While we are on the subject, what is it with the design of bidets? On a toilet, you have a good bum sized hole (give or take) with a comfy seat. On a bidet you need to perch on the cold, bare rim of a huge bowl, whilst you try to direct the water towards where you need it. Left to its own devices, the water trickles down the small of my back, which is generally quite clean already. I did face the wrong way on squat toilets for years, so it is quite possible that I have got this wrong too. Adjust the water pressure so it sprays where it is needed ;), never had an issue with it spraying my back !! sounds like you sat too far forward....... But mine has a downward pointing tap right at the back of the bowl. Am I supposed to put the plug in, fill it up then dip my tail feathers? Who has time for that? edited by Chewit on 10/06/2014 Umm, Chewit, are you facing the right way on your bidet? http://www.howcast.com/videos/351816-How-to-Use-a-Bidet Just seen the video. Who would have thought..you face the wall and straddle it like you're on a horse! Still, I think that my knees might hit the wall if I try to reach the tap at the back of our bidet. Off up to try it now, thanks for the link :) edited by Chewit on 10/06/2014

I don't understand why people who don't use them are deemed as gross I have survived for 42 years without one so it all cannot be bad It's not about using the hose it's about using some means of water to clean ones self. Toilet paper would not get rid of any nasty odours would it. Why are there so many wet wipes on the market these days??? The trick is to keep on wiping with a new paper until the wiped paper is white. Nothing left to cause a smelly bum after proper wiping. And the toilet is cleaner as the used paper has been flushed away. Wet wipes are bad for you. They are not suitable for sensitive skin and they clog up the sewage system as they don't dissolve like toilet roll paper. edited by N0rdique on 09/06/2014 True. Wet wipes can upset the pH balance and disturb the natural order of the microbes that keep our nooks and crannies healthy. It's funny, because the thinking on health and hygiene seems to have come full circle in the west at the moment. There has been a lot of research recently that suggests that we are too clean these days and that we have damaged our immune systems, hence the surge in allergies. edited by Chewit on 09/06/2014 Yes, Chewit, that is true but the research is not as new as we might think. Look at the number of children that are not allowed to get dirty for fear of germs. My DD is almost 35 and she had friends who were not allowed to play outside for fear of picking up something nasty! I'm sure you're right. I always remember by granny saying "a bit of dirt never hurt anybody". Just takes the establishment a few years to catch up.

Hi Charlie, I know that the Centre for Musical Arts has the oboe listed on their website. In my experience the teachers there are pretty good. They also do it at Dubai College, you could maybe give them a ring to find the name of the teacher.

http://www.campbeaumont.co.uk/ My kids used to love going to Camp Beaumont and it gave me a break too! They are always held at private schools with great facilities and most start in early July. Good selection of activies from most sports to art/drama etc. Oh, that brings back memories, I used to go on these when I was a kid. Great fun, but I can't say that I came away with any new skills. Quick hijack...can anyone recommend a decent French language camps for teenagers? I am looking for a GCSE booster rather than a social opportunity. It's quite hard to work out how focused the camps are from the websites. Do you mean in London? In which case look at Institut Francais du Royaume Uni. However, I can personally recommend www.learnfrenchinfrance.com if for an academic child but this is near Bordeaux though I think they have a centre in Surrey. Expensive though compared with the 'social' language camps. Thanks March, www.learnfrenchinfrance.com looks perfect for next year. Booked up this summer though :(

10years......ready for the backlash as only less than a year is the norm! Just to make you feel better, 16 years for us. We felt no social, practical or emotional imperative to sign papers or make public declarations. We only married for our move to Dubai. On the "no dating" debate, if I had listed my logical criteria for a husband when I was single, based on that alone, I could have found many thousands of matches. Does that mean that any one of these men would have made me happy in marriage?

I would be more worried about my kids being exposed to Miley's on-stage antics, or Beiber 's arrogance. Perhaps, as parents of impressionable kids, we need to think about the type of entertainment that we are encouraging/paying for. Hero worship is dangerous. Sure, enjoy the music, but don't expect the musicians to be angels. Perhaps save the big concerts for an age group who will not be bothered by a little s*x and dr*gs along with the rock and roll.

Do they at least have an indoor option, eg library or computer room, if they feel too hot? Not that I know of. Plus they line up outside and do PE outside. I'll pass on a top tip from my ex-Kings DD. You can "lose" your hat into the lost property box on the way into school, then "find" it again when you leave at the end of the day. They don't send you outside without a hat. The beauty of the plan was that even if they did a class search for the hat, they never found it. The little devil got away with it for almost a year.

DS wanted to be a professional musician. He has been praised to the skies in Dubai, admitted to senior positions in national orchestras etc. Last summer, being a supportive parent, l sent him to Europe to work with a fairly minor, junior orchestra. While he enjoyed the experience very much, he also had a major wake-up call as his musicianship was sadly lacking in comparison to the others. I was disappointed for him, but he is happy to do music for pleasure now. Your son may well be the next Ronaldo or Beckham. Fantastic. But if there is any way that you can expose him to some serious competition before he makes his decision, then do it. Perspective is very valuable.

I find that all of the supermarket white fish is slimy and kind of water logged, with a really fishy taste. The only nice white fish I've had here was freshly caught by a friend. Is the fish market stuff any better? Also, I spotted temporary signs to a fish market in Jumeirah recently but went back to look and they were gone. I haven't seen them since. Does anyone know what the story is with that?

I seem to spend most of my life in the car; to and from work, school, kids activities. It wouldn't be great to have to rely on taxis for this and the public transport is very poor in most areas of town. You would find yourself quite limited. Back home I walked everywhere, and I did try it for a very short time here, but traffic and heat soon got the better of me. I do sympathise, I hated driving and was terrified of the roads here, but you get used to it surprisingly quickly. There is very little in the way of tight manoeuvres or narrow twisty roads. People generally expect other drivers to be stupid, so if you make a mistake, they don't get as angry as they would in other countries :) The only other option would be to get a driver and a solid car. Good luck!

I'm finding the thumb distribution on this thread a bit of a puzzle... seems to be a lot of people in favour of slapping kids - my anti slapping post actually got 6 thumbs down !! Who are all these people who approve of it ? Very sad ... or maybe just an indication of the changing demographic on EW... Interesting point! Hadn't thought of that. But if as you suggest EW is becoming less 'western' in its target audience then that would explain people favouring more, errrrr..... 'traditional' forms of discipline :-/ I have never encountered so many educated people who would happily admit to slapping their kids on a regular basis; and to slapping another adult...never! Kids get used to whatever form of punishment you use whether it is a slap, withdrawal of attention or a stern talking to. Are the slapped kids all perfectly behaved little angels? Are the rest hellcats? Of course not. It comes down to intelligent parenting. It does worry me though. If you use a slap as a quick and easy punishment, what do you do when it is something really serious?

I would probably leave it too. If she is a good tenant you are lucky. You could tell her one more year at the current price but next year you will have to. That gives her 12 months to figure it out, otherwise, do what you have to do. edited by Tru Blu on 20/05/2014 Thanks for the input, I'm beginning to lean towards that solution too.

Actually, a great idea would be to have a sunbed with a padded face-hole on the angled section. You could incorporate a reading stand underneath to hold your book.

Thanks ladies, some giggling there! A folded towel is a good option, I just find my head gets pushed back slightly or me neck gets sore and after a few minutes it's all so uncomfortable. Clearly a pillow or towel is the wrong way to go. You need to lower your head, not raise it. If you are on the beach, try digging a hole in the sand then place a small toilet seat on top. Place your face on the toilet seat and this will allow you to breathe whilst maintaining a straight spine. Your own portable massage table! What an amazing idea. I'll look out one of my many portable toilet seats and see if it will fit in my case. Or perhaps hand luggage. Just need to decide which colour and whether a 2" or 4" raise would be best. Seriously though, I was a committed stomach sleeper, but it gave me so many back problems in later life. I completely understand your pain.

For me, it really depends on the space that is available in the house. In the UK, anything over 2 days would have been a struggle because we would be sharing bedrooms and bathrooms etc. and the rooms were quite small. For a whole family to stay could have been very uncomfortable. In Dubai, I am quite relaxed about visitors. They can stay for as long as they like (within reason) as long as they don't expect hotel-level service.

Hi there TTucker...please don't give up on your beautiful boy cat just yet. We have inherited gorgeous boy bin cats at different times, however several of them they just about drove us crazy with their constant meowing (almost howling). We stopped feeding them dry food, problem solved. Have only ever had the problem with boys. The beautiful boy we have now is also a neutered binny boy and only meows/howls crazily when he's had the opportunity to pinch some of our girl cats dry food! Please give it a try for a week or so and hope you "hear" a big difference with your beautiful boy cat. Interesting...what is the logic behind the dry food theory?
