It depends what system your TV's are. In the UAE the system is PAL, in the US its NTSC, so unless your TV can switch systems or you get a converter then they may not receive as far as I know. You will need voltage adapters too. edited by Di@DXB on 09/12/2014

I'm really getting a little bored with all these celeb chefs these days, too many of them on TV and acting like they are superstars. It's all been taken too far. What happened to chefs who used to quietly make superb food without all this hullabalou. Sorry I just get irritated by the mention of all these egocentric prima donnas. Not saying their food is bad I just would rather buy a cookbook than watch them! Good luck with the lunches though.

This happens all the time especially at the fruit counters, there is always someone standing in front of a pile of fruit and having an extended 'try' of the produce. I have never seen the staff ask them to stop or to pay for what they have eaten so [b'>it seems to be accepted as a norm in Dubai,[/b'> I guess the cost of this loss is paid for by the rest of us who go to the shops to buy rather than eat! I dont think its an accepted norm... there is so much competition among markets nowadays... hypermarkets cant afford to lose even the 'a bit voracious' customers to other hypermarkets... after all they do buy something (if not that particular fruit) ... and thus are beneficial to them... and i am sure the hypermarket don't lose much by just a few 'over tasters' s day... so they just choose to ignore it.. edited by Grittt1 on 09/12/2014 Yes, that's exactly what I said, supermarkets ignore it, so obviously they choose to accept the behaviour. Who can say how much these opportunistic munchers cost the shops, there is always a margin for loss in any retailing, so its built in somewhere. Personally, like you, I don't consider it as a normal or acceptable, to take anything without paying or at least asking for a free sample is theft in my opinion. edited by Di@DXB on 09/12/2014

It's commonplace unfortunately, but more usually at ATM's outside of the bank premises. If you don't voice your objection to the spying they will not have the sense or manners to step back, if they had they would not have been on your shoulders to start with. The bank should take control when this occurs inside the outlet.

Scientists say confining meals to a 12 hour window, such as 8am to 8pm, and fasting for the remaining day, appears to make a huge difference to whether fat is stored, or burned up by the body. Mice restricted to food for 12 hours a day lost a quarter of their body weight regardless of whether the diet was healthy or not, those put on the regimen with a healthy diet also gained lean muscles mass. Sounds like its something most people could do without hardship or special meals. Anyone tried it? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/dietandfitness/11268685/Eat-within-12-hour-window-to-lose-weight-say-scientists.html So, how does this work? can you fast for the 12hrs while you sleeping?? If you are only eating for a 12 hour window you will probably be sleeping for some of the fasting hours so unless you sleep walk and eat without knowing then I guess so!

DIETS DONT WORK !! CHANGING EATING HABITS AND LIFESTYLE DO. Agree, that is what 12 hour eating is about, its not a food restricted diet, its a lifestyle change that involves eating your usual foods, preferably healthy balanced meals, in a 12 hour period instead of freely over the day and night. In my case it will only involve having my last meal one hour earlier than usual, hardly a diet! edited by Di@DXB on 05/12/2014 IF YOU CANT PEEL IT AND IF ITS NOT SOLD IN A BUTCHERS YOU SHOULDN'T EAT IT. Opps the caps lock button was stuck. Processed foods, sugar and carbs should be avoided or reduced. Its soooo easy to lose weight if you eat the right foods in the right amounts and go for a walk once a day. Salads and vegetables wont make you put on weight no matter what time you eat them. Bit confused, so I should not eat blueberries, celery or fish or yogurt or cheese or oats, spelt, chia or quinoa because I cannot peel them and they are not sold in a butcher? I was giving a example, of course there are lots of healthy foods not included but as a rule if its not natural or prepared by me I wont eat it. People use diets because they're lazy. Lazy people don't think for themselves We are brainwashed by the media into eating things we know are bad and eating too much of it. It is so simple eat less, move more. Eat things nature intended not ready made junk. Weight loss is a $60 billion-a-year industry globally, who do you think is behind all these fad diets? The food industry giants are. They need us to eat more but as humans we don't need a lot of food so why do we all think we need to eat 3 times a day and snack in between meals, we are all brainwashed. The fact that we can survive just on water for long periods at a time tells you just how little food bodies actually need. People are fat because they eat too much and dont walk or exercise enough how many people complain about the Dubai stone when they first move here. http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/10-best-food-and-health-documentaries/ Watch some of these documentaries hopefully it will help you change the way you look at food Thanks for the links, I have watched most of these already and well aware of the fast food processed food industry and dangers to health bad fats, sugar and junk food, I must be one of the few people alive who has never eaten a Big Mac. As far as sugar and snacks go I have a natural aversion to sweet and fatty things. I'm not looking for a "lazy" diet or any food restricted diet, not sure if I need "to look at food differently" as I don't eat processed food or junk food at all nor too much food either, I do have healthy meals at appropriate times of day and I do walk, a little good fat and no sugar at all, And I honestly don't think I could eat any less food as you suggest without risking my health. If it were as simple as you say that "people are fat because they eat too much and don't walk enough" it would be really easy, but it's clearly more complex, thats why I raised the topic asking for experiences timing meals differently and its effect on how food is metabolised by the body. From what has been posted I think we can conclude there is no one size fits all when it comes to how and when we eat and the replies have been very insightful.

Oh goodness....there are no simple answers such as "just avoid XYZ" because everyone is different! The right amount of calories or activity is different for everyone. Di, I agree with the other posters about your calories being too scant. I also think your protein is lower than it should be for lean tissue maintenance. I am no carb hater, but I like to balance meals out, so that I am having either protein + carbs, or protein + carbs + fat at each meal instead of just carbs (l.e. porridge for breakfast). I have a couple of recommendations but depends how long you've been eating that way consistently Yes I think you are right about the protein intake,I don't eat meat or eggs, I do eat fish a lot though and cheese. I have been eating this way for years and doing pretty much the same level of exercise mainly walking and have stayed a stable weight until recenlty although not changed my habits. I would like your suggestions on how to improve my diet without gaining more.

Di@DXB I have no idea how you survive on such few calories...way less than a 1000 day according to what you posted. Do you only have a yoghurt for dinner. Yes I do only have yogurt for dinner, sometimes I add a few blueberries or strawberries to it but mostly just plain. I have done this for years now I don't feel good if I eat meals in the evening.

I agree with Chrissy and Beebers, in my case I do eat healthy, no processed food, no sweets, desserts or sugar, minimal salt, no wheat products, no bread or rice or pasta, and no junk food, my normal eating window is 6am to 7pm. Exercise-generally a brisk walk for about 40 mins. One guilty pleasure a square of 90% dark choc. Typical daily diet, breakfast-oats porridge made with water no sugar no salt a little cinnamon for flavour and to boost metabolism, lunch- steamed salmon lots of green veggies-dinner-pot of plain yogurt. two cups of tea daily and one cup of coffee. Thought maybe cutting off at 6pm instead of 7pm as I am not sure where I am going wrong food wise :(

Prices are increasing everywhere. If you are finding it hard to live in Dubai, you will struggle anywhere in the world. Not in my experience, I was paying more on rent and horrendous DEWA bills in Dubai, food is no cheaper in Dubai than where I live now, and the quality and variety is infinately better in the UK, rents are cheaper, my utilities are 1/5 of my DEWA bill, the only thing that's more expensive is fuel, in Dubai I typically spent 100 a week while at home I spend the equivalent of Dhs 150. On balance I am better off and there are so many other pluses you cannot put a price on. Health care and education are free too if needed.

The Sainsbury ad is a beautiful story, but it seems very cheap and exploitative to me for a supermarket chain to make mileage from the memory of our national heros, many of whom did not return from one of the most devastating war battles in UK history. Not appealing to me at all. This account of history should not have been pilfered for commercial purposes. They've only used it this year as it's the 100th Anniversary, which I think is good, as the younger generation need to know their history. Somehow I doubt education was the motivation behind their use of this story when its aired over a prime consumer shopping period. Personally, I would not want my youngsters to learn about their heritage if its tarnished by the implicit association of a supermarket promotion. I know lots of people think its a great idea but I just happen to find it distasteful. edited by Di@DXB on 07/12/2014

Interesting, my husband is currently doing this. He has lost 4 kilos so far. He has cut back a little bit, but before he started with the 8pm cut off he was snacking during the night til the early hours. Now he sleeps much better, doesn't wake up with a headache and snores less. I may try if myself, still got this Dubai stone to shift. ;) Sounds promising, how long did it take to lose 4 kg? About 6 weeks. Not really dieting, just changing eating habits a bit. Going to give it a go, thanks!

Thanks for the feedback londiamond, as you say once your metabolism has slowed from dieting or just ageing its hard to diet at all with any success. I may give it a try as I never eat meals at night so no hardship there. Just need to fit it all between 6am to 6 pm. edited by Di@DXB on 05/12/2014

Not meaning to criticise but honestly, if you have been in Dubai for several years and have heard of it happening before it should not have come as such a shock to you when a local lady asked you to remove an 8 year old from the ladies. Personallyif I have ever had a young boy of that age with me who needed the toilets in the mall I always let him use the disabled separate toilet as busybee2 suggests, so I can stand at the door and make sure he is safe too.

Agree, the level of transparancy is unprecedenced, it was a wise move on the part of the authorities to avoid the rumour and disquiet that would have followed and was probably the objective of the perpetrators. UAE have to be credited for being on top of the game.

DHL just totally destroyed a parcel sent from Dubai, it had been so badly mishandled and damaged the contents had fallen out, it arrived literally in shreds. The UAE has ones of the worlds highest levels of security and it was unlikely that this incident would go unsolved. Residents can be thankful that the murderer was so quickly arrested, who knows what further actions she may have planned to do besides this and the failed bombing, increased caution is still being advised by the US who issued an advisory to their citizens in the UAE, it cautions and guides them on aspects on personal safety, I did post it here for the benefit of those concerned but strangely it has been deleted.

Yes, no matter how nice anywhere is there is still no place like home. feel sad for the one dislike this comment received... how bad must the conditions be back home for this person.. :( Yes, that is sad, perhaps a war torn country? Actually, I don't think that's sad at all. I love my home countries but don't necessarily believe that life there is better than anywhere else. Possibly due to my third culture kid (expat) upbringing... when you are nomadic you can find true happiness virtually anywhere :-) And yes I *love* living in Dubai... so this would be my choice right now. My point was it would be sad if a person does not prefer home because its a war torn country. That is not sad?

All the accounts of days of old in Dubai are very interesting. :) [Di said'> [i'> I went home to have all my children, for reasons as Shaks described, and always traveled quite near my due date, with my third baby I only just made it home, had contractions on the flight all the way trying to convince myself must be indigestion,my mother took me straight from Heathrow to the London hospital I was booked at and I flew back days later with my new daughter. I must have been crazy to have risked it that late![/i'> Di, so did you have to cross your legs for the duration of the trip then? Giving birth sounded very primitive in those days, can't blame you for going home. I liked the pictures, especially the one with the plane full of falcons. Jumeirah mosque looks amazing from that aerial view as well. edited by Alismum on 30/11/2014 Not quite but I did have my fingers crossed! I was lucky, it did seem the longest flight ever at the time not knowing if I was going to make it I was so relieved to get to Heathrow I burst into tears when we landed, but at least the waterworks was only minor!

I have done this but some time ago, so hopefully the procedure is the same. I had to have a letter of permission from the DEWA account holder to transfer his deposit and account to me with copies of his passport, this would probably be ID now as well and residence as well as mine. I went to the DEWA office behind the Grand Hyatt and it only took a short time. They issued a new receipt in my name and transferred the account to me.
