I have found that staff often can not tell me what all the ingredients are in the food they serve, even chefs are sometimes unaware, in the case of LT cafe I asked for details and no one on the premises had any idea of the ingredients in any dish including the kitchen staff, they explained the food came to them ready prepared so they were not aware of the contents. I think this is not good enough that a resteurant cannot advise on the food it setves when a customer walks in and needs to know on account of allergies, but at least they said they did not know, I have often been told dishes did not contain ingredients I am allergic to and been told they were clear of them only to find out the hard way that they did contain it. I would not rely on serving staff to know, unless you can get direct information from the person who actually prepared the food I would not risk it especially with a child with peanut allergy.

It’s lovely to read other’s recollections and to know its of interest, when I was there I used to talk to people who had been there from the early 1950's and thought them the real brave pioneers. With National Day almost here again these memories make me feel very privileged to have witnessed the transition of Dubai to the wondrous metropolis it is today. As far as misconceptions go about the country little was generally known about the region back home, friends and family would sincerely ask if we rode camels to get around, they automatically assumed there was no electricity or running water, and just before I first flew out my grandmother warned I would be plagued with fiendish sand bugs and the sun would ruin my English complexion, she was quite convinced she would never see me again or at least in form she knew! In spite of all this I recall having a positive anticipation of the future when I set out and happy to report neither the bugs nor the sun ever got me. Electricity did come and go, fortunately our villa had a pool and we often take our meals outside and sit in it until it came back on. There was no television early on until Channel 33 was inaugurated with full English transmission. Programs used to begin English transmission at 2pm as the frequency was shared with the Arabic channels. When the children were small our TV would be switched on daily awaiting the signal switch so the boys could watch the children’s segment in the afternoon, it was mainly old cartoons like Tom & Jerry. There was one English news broadcast daily and a movie and that was pretty much the entertainment. Dubai airport had a single runway and was a modest low building with few facilities, there were few expats so travelling in and out was more of an event, I went home to have all my children, for reasons as Shaks described, and always traveled quite near my due date, with my third baby I only just made it home, had contractions on the flight all the way trying to convince myself must be indigestion,my mother took me straight from Heathrow to the London hospital I was booked at and I flew back days later with my new daughter. I must have been crazy to have risked it that late! The old Sharjah airport runway was where Mahatta Park is today, if you see the shape of the park you can picture a runway being there before, the original fort built to protect the passengers is now the museum. Driving was something you could do for relaxation! Hard to believe, but I found going out on the roads with no congestion even though most roads were very basic really enjoyable, as others have mentioned there were lots of loose livestock wandering all over the place and they would walk out into the road freely so dodging these was sometimes an issue although speed was never a need in those days. The road toward where Dubai collage is now was a sandy track for most of the way, when the college first opened and my son attended it still was not tarmacked all the way. Looking back I’d say everything really began to develop in the 80’s and Dubai started to find itself on the world map, shortly after the opening of the Shindaga Tunnel under the Creek I happened to see the British dancing group ‘Legs and Co’ of Top of Pops fame, they must have been one of the earliest entertainers to come out, anyway they had for some inexplicable reason decided to walk under the tunnel dressed up to the nines in their gear. They nearly caused a mass pile up from all the astonished drivers who could not believe their eyes. I wonder if anyone remembers them from Top of the Pops. I’m assuming they made it to the other side! All this reminiscing got me looking online at photos of old Dubai there is an aerial view of Jumeirah in this link below where I can see my old villa by the beach, was really happy to find that, just up from the Mosque is the location of the old beach road Spinneys , another pic of the Chicago beach Hotel as it was then and the Trade Centre standing alone in sandy surroundings, from a 22nd floor office I took so many photos looking over Dubai, in those days you could clearly see all the way toward the sea in uninterrupted views along Diyafa street with its few residential buildings and single lane road. This is getting a bit too long, so I’ll stop now, hope you enjoy the pics. http://www.dubaiasitusedtobe.com/pages/places/Dubaifromthesky.shtm#.VHguRzGsUi4 edited by Di@DXB on 28/11/2014

A bit further afield but the tailor in Ibn Battuta will usually do a small alteration while you wait. It's down the service corridor off New Look. ETA he does not open in the mornings, try after 1.30 to be on the safe side. edited by Di@DXB on 26/11/2014

I think in Dubai as anywhere in the world one thing is essential, you must have a passion for whatever business you plan to do, without that you will not have the motivation to slug it out long haul through all the set up and everyday challenges that are bound to come. To help you estimate cost there's a handy wizard on the Dubai Economic Dept website that will give you a good picture of basic set up licensing costs and requirements. First you will need a trade license and a registered company to sell your products. If you run your details through it will give you a good idea of what will be required and costs. In the first window you scroll down to the type of trade then follow the prompts on each section. Go to e-services then click on estimated cost of issue licence http://eservices.dubaided.gov.ae/Pages/Anon/Simulate.aspx?cpid=3000&PID=10101&LID=&sname=Estimated_Cost_of_Issue_License&srp=-1&sfn=-1 http://www.dubaided.gov.ae/English/eServices/default.aspx Best of luck with your venture! hth

I have much respect for the veterans on here including DesertRose and the like. Their words are gold and although I don't post as much on here, I really value their input in discussions. Hats off to you too, Di! What you wrote is an absolute Malcolm Taylor material! That's sweet of you CB :)

Wow that's really interesting Di. You must be one of the earliest expats on here (?) Were you a toddler when you came out here in 1975 then? ;) Unfortunately not a toddler! So now you have my age figured :) not sure if I am the oldest oldie though on here, I think are one or two others around the same time as me but probably I'm ranking pretty high on that scale! HaHa! I thought you were younger than me. Of course I am only 21 myself ;) edited by Alismum on 26/11/2014 Of course we are both 21! :) Only in my case I may have passed that number more than once! edited by Di@DXB on 26/11/2014

The Dubai of today cannot be compared to the city I first came out to in 1975. It would not be fair to make a comparison, but what I used to like was the smaller expat community, so few cars and traffic and being of a fewer number of expats we had more privilages really and it was easier and far less red tape to rent a villa and all the other things needed to settle down here. There were few rules and no fees attached to living here. Entry to DESS was more or less a given! Most of the housing was low level villas or buildings not more than 3 floors. The city had a tranquil vibe, a far cry from the buzz of today. Few of the beaches were closed off to the public the way they are now, only the Chicargo Beach Hotel, now the Jumeirah Beach hotel had its own stretch of beach. There was pretty much nothing between the old Toyota roundabout (now intersection) and Jebel Ali, the sheikh Zayed road had not been built, I used to drive home off road across desert from the Trade Centre to Jumeirah. There was just one Spinneys on the beach road, an old building, demolished some time ago, with creaky floor boards, but we found most of what we wanted there and everyone knew us by name, It was the only place to get Bird's Eye frozen products and we would be told when the next consignment would arrive, i remember once much excitement over the arrival of frozen peas after a bit of a shortage of them. Of course shopping in malls was a thing of the future, the first one opened in 1980 in al Ghurair Centre. That year saw the construction of the SZR and the Hyatt opened too with the revolving restaurant which was a big novelty at the time. The only other major hotels were the Sheraton and Intercontinental on the Creek. The Dubai now is a fabulous city, with incomparable infrastucture and facilities, but For me life does not revolve around the malls, so although there are so many fantastic malls, hotels and attractions today it's not a prime factor for me really, I prefer smaller shops. Not into brunching or nightlife either, howver there are many things I do appreciate today that make life easier, it's just that I was just as happy to manage without them too! It's nice to recall the old days, sorry for the ramble! edited by Di@DXB on 26/11/2014

We have done it both ways in the past, ourselves with a lot of running around embassies and foreign offices which was really tiresome and then we used an agency which did it all for us, it was a while ago so I don't recall how much we paid in either case, but if you want to ask the people we used you could get a quote over the phone http://www.pangulf.biz/services.aspx

You can sell handmade items at Arte if you have made them yourself in the UAE, alternatively if your products are imported there are lots of winter festivals on from now til Christmas, there's a list on EW by admin. There's also the Safa Park flea market, and Ripe markets there too. A monthly souq run by Marketeerz and markets at Wafi Mall monthly too. Lots of schools will be having their festive fairs from now as well. You can trade at all of these without a license as you are covered by the event organiser. fairs and markets in this link http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_things_to_do_Where_to_see_Santa_in_Dubai_12048.aspx edited by Di@DXB on 25/11/2014

Not wishing to be pessimistic but my experiences with contract cleaners was never ending trial and error, but I do know of a few people who are happy with their contract maids, one agency recommended to me lately by a friend is Sky Maids, she was very pleased with the agency and has used them for many years, I did not get to try them so maybe worth it who knows!

There are some wools (synthetic) and possibly cotton yarns in Daiso, not the quality of Craftland, but then not the price either. You could look in Creative minds too, I think they will be on a par with Craftland pricewise though.

Thanks for all of the replies but a big thank you to Di@dxb, I took my car to yellow hat and they did a fantastic job. AED 400 for interior clean/shampoo and AED 850 in total for outside clean and polished out majority of the scratches. They even volunteered the info that ADCB and Rakbank card holders get an additional 20% off so in total it only cost AED 680. Very good price for a very good job! :) glad it worked well for you, yes they are a really nice team and do a fabulous job.

Hi I just recked my iPhone 5s and desperately need a new phone, would anyone that has an old iPhone lying around be willing to part with it? I don't mind if it looks old as long as it works. Thanks in advance. M If no one gives you one you could try Xpango where you can earn free gadgets like iPhones, it [i'>can[/i'> work completely for free, depending how you use it, if you don't sign up for the free trials as that will lead to a commitment to pay something later and just stick with the DIY referring system which means you are not reliant on others to make referrals its your own that add up to getting points. No idea how long it takes to earn an iPhone but nothing to lose providing you just use the referral system. see review. http://www.xpango.com/ http://doesitreallywork.org/xpango-review/

Shame, seems the main issues are, the right size of Jpeg and type of browser, if you have sized the image ok and tried on Safari or Firefox it should have worked. It did not work for me with Chrome only with Safari on an iPad. Hope you get it sorted.

Technically. Although its widespread, it illegal because you would be working for someone other than your sponsor or employer. So it's a breach of immigration law and carries the risk of being fired from your employer and possibly fined. That said, the percentage of parents who employ private tutors is so high and few seem concerned.

I did the avatar as well but I don't see my flower. :( I resized it, captcha thingie and it accepted it but so far no flower. Think it was a gif. I also tried name change. If my flower didn't work then I may change it to something else. Try doing it again without changing your name, according to admin reply that has to be done by email not on the profile page although it appears to be possible since you can input a new name. I think it also needs to be a Jpeg, however I have tried all this and still nothing!

You could ask the chef at whichever hotel you liked the best one, they usually will tell you how they make it. I have taken some great recipes from famous chefs over the years, you may be surprised how happy they are when people ask. I think in the case of umm Ali and I am not an expert on it, I think they use puff pasty instead of bread. I'm sure others here know better.

On the edit profile feature There isn't a mailing list select option for the UK? Is it possible to change your user name? (tried but it did not confirm the action) Uploaded an avatar, the action was confirmed but nothing has appeared yet? TIA Dear Di@DXB, It's not possible to change your username yourself- if you would like a change please email [email protected] and they will assist you. If you tried to do this at the same time as your avatar it will not have gone through to the system- please try again with the avatar now- we've checked for you but there's no record of it. We don't have a UK newsletter at the moment... we'll be putting a rest of the world option on there soon. Warm regards, EW Admin Oh thanks, I will email in the name details and upload the avatar again!
