In Ramadan they do Iftars followed by a tour of the mosque, you can book online or call them. http://www.cultures.ae/index.php/online-booking-now http://www.cultures.ae/index.php/contact http://www.cultures.ae/index.php/ramadan-2014

All expats living in the UAE should respect the traditions of the country. Everyone is welcome here with an open mind & heart, but that invitation has been extended in the hope that each individual will try to learn a little about the religion, heritage and traditions of the country in which they have arrived. [b'>And re the topic under discussion here, it is simple really.[/b'> It's about being considerate to those around you. Playing loud music in your car is another thing which many non-Muslims don't think about. We all appreciate that not everyone knows exactly what Ramadan is about or how they should behave, but I would encourage people to learn - it is polite and shows an interest in the country you live in. The most basic piece of advice is to have patience. That goes for people of all nationalities - including Muslims. Non-Muslims must be open to becoming educated about the ways of Ramadan and Muslims must respect that some people are still learning. If we all have patience, everything will be OK! I read the exact same paragraphs, (with the exception of the one sentence highlighted), in an article entitled 'Respecting Ramadan' published some time ago, perhaps you are the original author of that article? If not you really should quote your sources. [url=http://team1dubai.blogspot.ae/2007/09/respecting-ramadan.html'>link[/url'> <em>edited by Di@DXB on 02/07/2014</em>

I have some pieces of furniture to get rid of (not top condition but not bad) and I would like to give them to a good home, does anyone know of any animal charities or other charities that would collect and take them. Someone suggested 'Take my junk' but I was told that they aren't a charity and I would prefer to benefit a non profit organization. I do however need the items to be collected as I won't be able to transport them. Any ideas? If you want the items collected as far as I know only TMJ will collect, and although they are not a registered charity they do donate a fair percentage of what is given to them as well as having ongoing programs to assist the poor particularly over Ramadan when they distribute food and essentials such as cooking stoves etc to needy families. Yes it is a business but charities too take a percentage for their running costs and not every penny you donate to an official charity reaches the needy either. I don't necessarily think you will be doing any less of a charity in giving to them.

For those travelling or meeting people at the airport, the Costas landside, terminal 3, on arrival and departure levels are open for sit-in coffee, behind screens. A few like this in the malls would be good. edited by Cherry ripe on 30/06/2014 There used to be coffee shops screened off in most of the the malls until fairly recently, not sure why it its not allowed anymore.

I used to have a machine but have gone back to making it in the pan, I use coconut oil and way more delicious than bought microwave stuff. But if you want to microwave it its also easy to make your own bag popcorn, use a brown sandwich bag a little corn, close the bag over a couple of times and it pops just as fast as the commercial stuff and you avoid the nasty additives. You can add oil or butter afterwards if you want.

chicken (from Turkey - makes me laugh) - ripe Meat - gourmet butcher veg - Greenhearts edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 30/06/2014 edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 30/06/2014 Agree, but again on the pricey side as compared to supermarkets. am not sure Greenhearts is any more expensive than Waitrose really.... nor with the organic chickens from Ripe, they are more or less the same price as Wrose. what are the prices for chicken and meat like ? They have online stores - take a look To my recollection the chicken in Ripe is even more expensive than Waitrose, I don't buy meat except when I have meat eating visitors! And the Organic veg is for sure more than the organic veggies in LuLu, I think anyway the OP is looking to save a bit rather than go organic.

I don't get the reasoning behind allowing free zone cafes to remain open and all other cafes having to close, are there no fasting people in the free zones? They have different regulations, and perhaps the permit is easier to obtain. The DMCC one (JLT) for eg. allows consumption of food on premises behind a curtain, it's 1510AED for the permit. Yes I understand there are different regulations between free zones and outside, but still wonder as to the reasoning in permitting consumption of food publicly in a free zone and not permitting the same elsewhere when it is all happening in Dubai in public. Maybe it has something to do with the FZ companies being independently owned rather than the non FZ entities having a local sponsor. Therefore they have a say in this? ( I don't know this but perhaps) Could be, but its the principle I find confusing. I think Sarah could be right as the companies in free zone have 100% foreign ownership. That explains how they are permitted, obviously there is no exemption on a religious basis such as there is in the airport and so wonder at the need for restrictions elsewhere, I would have thought it a matter of religious principle, but obviously its not.

Fruit and veg at LuLu hypermarket is excellent quality and variety and reasonably priced, I don't like their meat though. For meat I prefer Geant rather than C4, of course Waitrose is nice but as you say very pricey.

Are there any hospital cards in it? I dropped my purse once, I had an American Hospital card in it. The lovely man who found it called the American Hospital and they gave him my phone number. I had it back within minutes of losing it, made my day :) Glad it worked out for u.....but in my honest opinion....they really shouldn't be furnishing personal contact details to anyone ringing up and asking them for it!!! Data Protection here is terrible ! Agree, and not only on an official level, where of course our unlisted ex directory private phone numbers somehow get on to data bases, but on a social level too it seems the general culture is to freely hand out other people's numbers. I always ask the person whose number is being requested before passing it on to anyone.

Bur Dubai police station. The owner will be contacted within 5 minutes of it being handed in....... Obviously the correct answer! Cannot fathom how anyone would suggest doing anything but handing it in to the police, ringing up random numbers off the phone directory would be not a very certain way to be sure you get the real owner!

Very sensitive situation. But it is Your wedding day and it's a lifelong memory forever imprinted in your memory bank. I don't know your relationship details nor how the finances will be dealt with but personally, if it was going to compromise my wedding day, I would take her out for a nice dinner and explain to her the situation and how you got caught up with it all but want to go back to the original wedding party of close friends n family. Then reimburse all her bills and make up big time with her. Have a great wedding experience and the best memory moments x This wedding happened already back in May so I guess the OP worked out what she was going to do!

When it comes to child protection I believe you will find you will not land in trouble for reporting this. I would even ask the police if you reporting it compromises your safety around such an aggressive person. Was thinking to do that initially as Izzy suggested too, just make a query as to my position before making any sort of report. And yes the neighbour appears to be an aggressive person, that is a concern, and also confirms my suspicions. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 27/06/2014</em>

Please report it Di@DXB, if it turns out to be a false alarm all the better but rather safe than sorry......if this poor child is being abused as Izzy says it is up to society to step up. Looking into how to do that, what would be the repercussions for me if no evidence is found? Could I be on the wrong side of the law myself? So often here people who report something end up in more trouble than the aggressor, recent case in mind of the street beating. Think I need to take legal advice first.

Yes, you are both right Izzy and Londiamond, I am sure the last time the child was being abused, there was that awful few seconds of silence after each thump and then the child high pitched scream, clearly a painful reaction not a bratty whine.

I have been faced with a dilemma for some time, and after weeks or months possibly of agonising about it, I finally went to a neighbour as I was seriously concerned for a young child I constantly hear crying. This crying is more than anyone would expect from a child, goes on all hours of the day and night and is coupled with banging noises. Not knowing if it is the child who is banging things or the parents who are beating him I have hesitated until recently. What triggered me to go up to their door was the last occasion when I could clearly hear thumping immediately followed by the child's screams after each thump and both parents screaming at the child, so I went to their door and asked if everything was ok. Basically the father was very aggressive, in fact gave me the finger, and the mother did not show her face. I have no idea what to do next. Should I record the sounds? Not sure if that would be legal. If I do report them they are sure to deny anything. No idea what the procedure would be but I am still very concerned for this child who I think may have a special condition of some kind as he is rarely seen outside.

Yes, alone those dresses do not cover completely but surely if worn with a light jacket or lace top they would fall into dress code requirements. Its hard to find a maxi dress with sleeves at any time of the year, personally I prefer some sleeve with a long dress too but never find anything wearable with sleeves that's not over cluttered with all sorts of bows, ribbons or garish colours. Exactly, and some of these dresses you don't wear unless on a posh night out. I love the pink embellished dress, I want it! But then with my muffin top shape no way I will look good in a fish tail dress :( Yes, the pink one is very pretty. Get Spanx and go for it!

Well, just in case anyone else thinks of looking for a knitting bag anywhere in Dubai I don't think such a thing exists here, went to Craftland, the 2 Creative Minds, Magrudys, several gift boutiques, and all the malls along the Beach road. LuLu's and MOE. Finally in Lifestyle MOE I found a lovely solid tote shaped organiser in a faux leather with pretty designs on a fabric like finish that should be just perfect for storing wool and needles etc, and by the way, they have some really cute little trinket boxes in atm. Could not resist getting a bunch of them as gifts to take home too.

That's very nice of you to send the photo to her already, I am going to see if I can find the materials myself first since I now feel quite enthusiastic about trying to make this myself if possible. I can't make a knitted one but am hoping to find a kit. Many thanks.

Yes, I do agree with you, Silvstet. There is no offender registry here nor screening of employees who work with children and sometimes I wonder what kind of people are responsible for our children. I know that my children are never alone with any adult during the time that they are not with me, and I hope that that is enough. I also try to remind myself that bad things happen to children by carers all the time in my country (the USA) where they do have criminal checks before hiring plus offender registries.. In the USA, you can't even be a parent helper without going through a criminal check... Totally agree, and I also find it odd here that play outlets in the malls where under 5's are left alone while parents shop have male attendants, I was about to take DD's LO to the play zone in our mall and saw a male attendant handling a little girl inappropriately while lifting her up on to play equipment. I did an abrupt about turn, even though I was not going to leave her there alone. <em>edited by Di@DXB on 26/06/2014</em>

Dont mean to state the obvious here, but dont you knit them yourself? Not sure if your question is directed at me or the other party who suggested someone else? Anyway, I can't knit and I'm looking for a gift for a friend who is a knitter, if anyone knows of any place they have seen ready made bags like the one in my link below I would be grateful. In any case I doubt a home knitter will have the special handles this design requires. You buy the handles in craft stores that sell wool :) My mother / Grandmother always had bags similar to that and they just made them from fabric - i think you can also get kits too :) Thanks Izzy, I will go and have a look in the craft stores then, I could possibly make one myself from fabric if there is a pattern and kit :)

Would all of you please stop hovering around your children like a bunch if demented vultures. Instead, try teaching them to be self-sufficient. No wonder there are so many children wandering around without a lick of common sense. It's kind of difficult to acquire good instincts when your parents hover over you constantly in order to "keep you safe". I think you are confusing "self sufficiency" and safety, going by your theory it is necessary to expose a child to risk in order to teach him common sense? Sorry that does not make sense to me. Should we leave a young child alone on the edge of a roadway so he can be "self sufficient"?
