This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but has anyone ever applied for a Croatian visit visa from the UAE? They do not have an embassy here. I believe the closest one is in Cairo. How do I go about this? If you are British you don't need one http://croatia.visahq.ae/requirements/United_Kingdom/resident-United_Arab_Emirates/

Some UK banks do offer prime or premier foreign currency on shore accounts to those who declare themselves 'not ordinarily resident', however these accounts are often not covered by Britain’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme so may not offer better protection than offshore banking, although UK banks in Channel islands and Isle of Man do offer local protection schemes so may be relatively more secure than other offshore international locations. I would advise your friend to take professional investment advice.

Asking for a friend: Does anybody know whether an expat will pay tax on savings accounts in the UK? or is it better to invest offshore where there is no tax to pay? We are confused and would appreciate some advice please. They have not lived in the UK for years but have a property there and get the personal allowance offset against the income. Outlines on general taxation rules would only give you a partial answer, how they would apply specifically to your friend's circumstances would be best determined by a professional tax consultant because there are so many factors that determine taxation under UK law.

Have a very tight budget...but have started to believe in Feng Shui after reading an article on Emirates on way to Bangkok about HSBC head office in Hong Kong employing an old experienced Feng Shui master and how strongly they believe in him and so do the residents of Hong Kong and many many Chinese. Does anybody know who to contact in Dubai - but like I said have a very tight budget and the person in question has to be good with references. Have been through bad luck and few difficult months so exploring all avenues. Anyone? Sorry I don't have any contacts for Feng Shui, but if anywhere needs it then HSBC does!

Does anyone know of any nurseries that take toddlers on an hourly basis in the "new Dubai" areas? Sometimes I have to run a few errands and don't want to drag DS along. I would prefer to stick with the same nursery each time so there is some continuity. TIA! Kidville in JBR do daycare, not sure of the minimum hours, but you can try a free session to see if you like it. http://www.kidville.com/ae/nursery

DS did the trip from Doha to Dubai about 6 months ago, it took 12 hours, with long waits at the SA border due to staff gong off and no one being available, the roads were full of potholes and very dangerous with many large juggernaut lorries driving without care. Much of the way completely unlit at night so a very stressful drive altogether. As others have said bad facilities on the way and no decent food to be found at all. They left the car in Dubai and flew back, we had to have the car shipped back to them. They would never do it again for sure. edited by chezmoi on 20/01/2015

Sounds like the same issue a relative encountered when trying to apply online, he got nothing after registering, no reference or way to move on the system with the process. Anyone know of any good banks in the UK who we could use to invest a lump sum of money offering a decent rate of interest please? Onshore in the UK the best will be about 3% on a five year fixed deposit with Weatherbys depending on the amount and your flexibility.

Here in the UK, halal meat is sold in many main stream supermarkets, its is clearly labelled as such. I cannot imagine anyone ever thinking of making halal checkouts, people just make an educated decision on whether to buy halal or not. Same goes for pork. The choice is everywhere the same and the more the issue is blown up the less tolerance there will be between everyone. edited by chezmoi on 19/01/2015 As the UK is not a Muslim country it’s somewhat irrelevant to even mention what UK supermarkets do and what people in the UK want comparative to here. This is after all the UAE not the UK and a thread that was just advising posters residing in Dubai of this news. Posters imaginations are not needed. And Dubai is not a Christian country so it is relevant to mention a comparison of how pork is handled in Dubai to how halal is handled in the UK and how people deal with it. There is nothing imaginary about my comment. Its factual view expressing that we would not expect halal checkouts in the UK. My sentence is not an imaginary musing on the unknown. Taking one word out of context for the sake of argument is meaningless. Let me put it in simpler English for you No one is calling for halal checkouts in the UK and I do not expect it to ever happen. edited by chezmoi on 19/01/2015

Thanks ladies. I haven't heard of the Auction House so will google them. My bedroom furniture is Ikea which is a pain if CC don't take it. I would double check on that as I used them 6 months ago, if they need furniture at the moment they may be open to Ikea stuff, its only when they are flooded with things they don't take it.

If considering HSBC its useful to know that they have recently introduced a new policy towards customers who do not use their credit and finance facilities, if you have an account there and do not take out a loan, owe money on a credit card or mortgage they are likely to unilaterally close your account without notice and send you a cheque with your balance after a couple of weeks. This just happened to someone I know in Dubai and he was locked out of all his funds due to the sudden closure of his account for this reason and without even giving an explanation. Apparently Citi Bank are also enforcing the same policy. Beware. A good customer to them is not someone who is in the black. edited by chezmoi on 19/01/2015

I have used Cash Converter a couple of times, they sold the items for me at the price I wanted and gave me a cheque. They only take good quality and decent condition items and would not take anything from Ikea as far as it was when I used them last year. It saved me the hassle of having people over to the house haggling over every last thing. They charge a fee for collection so if you can take the items there yourself it would be cheaper.

Hi Ladies! Anyone know where to get this cream in Dubai? Any good? Not tried it but I see its getting good reviews, there's a review of it and of Rosehip Oil, which I do use, that I know is very effective but not an instant line filler like N&F. Its available here in the UK in Boots, so you might find it in Boots Dubai. I may get some and give it a try and let you know! Hi Ladies, It is so nice to see that the markets concept has really exploded in the UAE in recent months which really does support local producers, farmers and cottage industries. I think I must have visited them all as I am a huge fan of local produce as well as supporting the local small businesses who work tirelessly to earn an extra income by pitching up their own stall (akin to the car boot sale in the UK). i remember that around 18 months ago, we only had the safa flea market but now we have dozens of options - the ones which come to mind are Arte, covent garden market, market @ Yas Marina, Ripe, Farmers Market, Market @ the beach, Market @ the beach, Shop outside the box, Jumeriah Town Center As a shopper, I have to say, I've been really impressed by them all and have always found myself spending a lot more than I was anticipating! Much to DH's horror in most cases! [i'>Anyway, I was interested if there were any sellers out there who had any feedback in terms of which was the best place to sell? My sister has tried various venues for selling her bespoke metal products and had most joy at Jumeriah Town Centre (max profit over christmas was 15k for one day) and the least successful was an event called Wafi Bazaar where football was very sparse and she didn't even cover her rental costs. Would be interested in other experiences as I'm also interested on earning a few dirhams on the side. [/i'> Many thanks You can have differing success at any of the events with any product wherever you sell them, there are many factors that come into play with the craft markets and fairs, seasonal sales are good over Christmas and pre-summer. Events can be impacted by other events such as concerts and football rugby etc going on in town that may be clashing with your event date, so its hard to name one best place overall consistently for all products. You could so well anywhere with any product. The more work you put into your product the better you will do. Like any thing you want to sell anywhere a lot depends on, marketing, competition and demand. I know of some ladies who have really made it work well and have developed businesses and others who have had poor results. But since it costs next to nothing to give it a try and there are so many venues now you can try, its worthwhile looking into even as an additional means of getting your handicrafts into the marketplace, footfall and customers demograph varies too with locations and you will identify where works the best for your particular craft. hth

Chezmoi, How old is the house you are living in now? I am thinking could the newer houses have better plumping system, and that they won't clog with toilet papers or wet napkins being flushed down. I had experienced clogged toilet and it was really unpleasant. I'm hoping the 10+ years old Saheel villas have better plumping system. The house I am talking about is about 6 years old, so fairly new. Its in the UK though not Dubai. I was surprised this happened because traditionally we always throw paper and towels down the toilets here without issues. First time I had this problem in the UK, its not on a septic tank or anything like that, the house is connected to a modern sewer system, so those wipes can obviously be really destructive. edited by chezmoi on 16/01/2015

I used to buy from Pamp Suisse as they are certified 999% purity and used to sell them back to them too. Not sure if they still buy now but If they are stamped bars you should not have difficulty shopping around for a good price, its the ones that have no stamp that are hard to sell. As saralou said, wet wipes do cause blockages, even the ones that claim to be flushable are just as bad. They do not dissolve as they are fabric and its misleading of manufacturers to call them flushable because although you can certainly can flush them away they don't dissolve like paper and will certainly cause a major blockage quite quickly because they adhere to the pipes until they completely close the flow off. My plumber told me those wet wipes are the best thing that ever happened for the plumbing industry, especially for companies like Dyno Rod! Oh really? I have been using flushable wipes for years in my toilets and I have never had a blockage. I am concerned about what you mention, though. How quick is quickly? I can only speak from experience really, in the house I am now it took just 3 months for the 3 bathrooms plumbing to come to a complete blockage with the occasionsl use of "flushable" wet wipes. The wipes had to be extracted by machine from the toilets to all the waste pipes and from the mains outside the house where they had all matted up into a huge ball. I guess the plumbing infrasture can be different from place to place, so if you are throwing wipes down the pan without issues for some time you may be ok.

There are certainly a lot of posts to the admins on this forum, and they seem to actually oblige a lot. Must be exhausting! And whenever there's threads about the thumbs, invariably, the people who respond liking or disliking the change get many thumbs down, lol! In the before-time, if you felt strongly enough, you posted to express your dissent. Now one can simply thumb down a post without having to come out of the woodwork, but that doesn't seem to stop people from posting in disagreement, so at least it has not made the forum totally boring. I'm sure there is a mixture of thumbs down given to say "oh, that sucks" or "I don't like you" or "I disagree or am offended" or even, as it seems, "you are too happy and optimistic about moving here, and getting a good job package." Seriously, I see a ton of thumbs down for those posters and I can't figure that out! Or the innocuous "where do I buy a good toaster" posts!? Someone's just having fun. edited by Beebers on 15/01/2015 edited by Beebers on 15/01/2015 Agree with all that you say, but playing around with them just for fun makes a nonsense out of the whole purpose don't you think?

Going through your concerns, some of them are unknowns, how rough the pregnancy may be or the delivery, post partum and weight issues too. Every pregnancy is different, you could just sail though another one but nothing is guaranteed. I doubt you will be a bad mother since you are thinking carefully about having another child. As far as the logistics of working and managing you need to discuss this with your DH, he knows you and your personal circumstances better than anyone on here really. Seems you are a bit torn between keeping the stays quo of your life, the perks your job offer and your desire for another child. Sometimes distance helps put things in perspective, if you have a chance to take a break from your routine and sit somewhere relaxing it might help you come to a decision you feel happy with. Sorry if this does not help much but wish you the best.

Hello Ladies, Happy new year i just want some thoughts on something that has been puzzling me for a while. i am eager to have baby number 2 now that it is 2015 and i wanted a 3 year gap between my DD and baby number 2 but i am so scared. i had a rough pregnancy, went through depression twice after baby and gained so much weight. i now have lost all the weight and i know that i want to stay active during my pregnancy so that is taken care of, i am just so worried how will we handle a second baby all by ourselves. i would love to keep working after baby number 2 but i don't see that happening. i work 10 hours a day and nurseries are quite expensive. there are cheaper nurseries her in AD but i just didn't feel comfortable leaving my DD there so i know i won't be keeping my future baby. hiring a maid is also out of the question. i am terrified and i want to have all my children before i turn 30. i was thinking of quitting and doing my own thing. but i don't want to lose the benfits i get from work. the tickets back home the education everything. my DH is very supportive and has been patient with me but every day he tells me how he would love a sibling for my DD. what if i become a bad mother and have no time for my DD, what if i am weak. how will i handle it, how will i be able to face this challenge alone. what if i also have a rough pregnancy and end up in an emergency Csection again. i don't know what to do? i have given myself till the end of Jan 2015 to really think about it as i really want a difference of 3 years + or - between my DD and baby number 2. help please. were you able to still work? Honestly I think you are putting yourself under too much pressure, in this case its not ideal to think about having another child, a lot of what you have expressed its seems are feeling of doubt. Maybe if you given up the deadline idea you will feel more relaxed and able to think out the pros and cons better.

I was a patient of Dr Madhu for many years, up to last summer when I had a root canal and crown he was way less expensive than any other dentist I tried for the same work. 800 for a crown is not over expensive at all actually, I was quoted over 5k elsewhere and Dr Madhu did mine for at least half that price.

There was not much in it that made sense though, something about being psycho because she was not allowed to buy chocolate. Yes Beebers, Yanni is a brilliant stylist, you can check out her FB page and see her work. If you search her name on here too you will find lots of recommendations besides mine. Sorry to hear you got a bad cut yesterday, its horrible when that happens, I had so many disasters before I found her. maybe pop round to Yanni and see if she can fix it for you. Thanks Di@Dxb May be I should try her next time for my cut. How much does she charge for haircut? I cannot recall exactly but She used to be the same price as Hairworks, better check her prices are listed on her page, will try to find it for you. ETA here are the prices https://www.facebook.com/YanniSalon/app_599788450050788?ref=page_internal edited by Di@DXB on 04/01/2015
