Madge_Custard. Have you ever filed a case and followed it through? We did (we won our case). When we did you go into a proper court room - a big wooden panelled room with the Rent Committee ruling officers sitting at a big table at the front. The Landlord and his people sit on one side and the person who has brought the case against the Landlord sits on the other side of the room. It is a court room where decisions and rulings are made. So - people do refer to it as taking your Landlord to court. And when people refer to this it's the rent committee court room that they are referring to. For those thinking about filing a case - The cost is a percentage (can't remember what that is now) of your annual rent and if you have a water tight case it's worth every single dirham to stop your Landlord kicking you out. You don't need to take a lawyer with you and you don't need to have an Arabic speaker with you either. If your mother tongue is English and it's your case - your case will be heard in English. Our Landlord arrived in the court room with an army of people - translators, lawyers etc and we felt quite intimidated but as it was our case we were asked to explain, in english, why we were there and what our case was about. Within 2 minutes they had ruled against the Landlord and we were told we were free to go and we should pay our annual rent cheque to the Landlord minus the costs of the case. Our Landlord stood up and started shouting at the committee in Arabic and I can tell you it was not pleasant....... we were again assured that our case was over and the guy in charge told us that he would deal with the Landlord and we were free to leave....... As we were leaving our Landlord came out with his lawyer to try to cut a deal.......we suggested that we should go back into the courtroom at which point he accepted that he would get a rent cheque smaller than the year before due to his greed....... the rent committee is fair and they take a dim view of those Landlords trying it on.

Everything that makes your house a home - all you personal knick nacks will arrive and when you put them up you feel at home! I would get guests to bring out pampers bed mats, a certain brand of hair colour and medised. Other than that we just found we could get pretty much everything in Dubai. I agree that the Calpol sachets are good to bring out. I am now back in the UK if I can help you at all with preparing for your new adventure please feel free to contact me on Claire dot damamme @ ntlworld dot com If you have any queries or questions I'd be really happy to help you.

Perfect! A win win situation. You watch her eyes light up when you tell her you will have lots of turkey for her at Christmas. There's nothing better than a gorgeous roast turkey with all the trimmings. The best ones we had were from the marriott hotel by Dubai marina - absolutely delicious. I always roasted my own potatoes and did pork sausages wrapped in bacon but that's because I am not a fan of hotel roast potatoes. Everything was superb. Enjoy! edited by Clairehdp on 31/10/2013

Well now we know where all the money raised by the parents of GEMS students is going after schools instructed all fundraising went to GEMS Varkey Foundation for the last two years and no other charities were to be supported anymore ! Really? That's hideous! How sad not to be allowed for the children to choose their own special charities to support.

Ooh don't envy you on that. It's a tricky one. I think if I were you I would go and talk to the guys still the rent committee and take their advice. You tried to do the right thing although they will tell you that you should have sold with tenants in situ but that doesn't help you now. You most definitely don't want to have to pay a years rent as compensation. I think the thing that really riles people is when the Ll turfs them out and then re rents straightaway at a much higher rent. If you gave had a period of the property bring empty snd you can dhow proof that you gave tried to sell you nay find it will be ok. But I would ho in and Adkins them all those questions. Good luck.

Do you have a housemaid? If you do why not do her a special plate of Turkey. I used to do that with my lovely housemaid and she would take it to her sisters and a group of them would tuck into a buffet they had all put together with food given to them by the families they worked for. If you have an agency maid ask her if she would like some cold turkey or see if a friends housemaid would like some - no one in Dubai should ever worry about having left over Turkey there are so many people you come across every day who would love you to share some Christmas Turkey.

I agree with the other ladies - International city is to be avoided at all costs! Can she find out from other single teachers where they are living. I know some of the teachers from our school lived in Motor city apartments and loved it there. Discovery Gardens are also good. I know a single teacher who did start off in international city and it was horrible and she got out as soon as she could.

Take them to Hamleys toy shop on Regent Street! So fabulous at Christmas! My Dad used to take us all as a special treat and I still remember how very very exciting it was. Winter wonderland at Hyde Park is supposed to be amazing - we missed it last year - the largest ice skating rink in London. I know loads of people who went last year and all had a great time http://www.hydeparkwinterwonderland.com/ Harrods Santas grotto is booking up already - you need to sign up to harrods awards but that's easy then you can book...... http://www.harrods.com/grotto They are building an amazing UK Lapland in Windsor (only a short train journey from London) I would highly recommend doing that! It's supposed to be a truly special experience...... again - booking up fast check out all the details on here http://www.laplanduk.co.uk/ The Christmas lights in Oxford Street, Regent Street and Knightsbridge are always superb. And the shop windows are amazing - Harrods and Selfridges particularly. Enjoy your special Christmas!

I completely agree with all the others. don't walk away - run for your life! You will be paying for an unfinished villa which may never get finished. You will also be paying rent for a villa with a pool but it could take up to 6 months for a pool to appear and you have to live with the mess and chaos while it's being installed......no way The LL must think all his birthdays have come in at once. He's definitely trying it on. Run and don't look back. Make this a rule too - only look at completed villas - there are plenty! My friend is leaving Dubai soon and will be moving out of her villa in jumeirah park with completed pool and landscaping - there are lots of people moving around and you're bound to find a much, much nicer, completed villa with a better LL than this one who could give you a really hard time once you sign and move in...... Happy villa hunting - I'm sure you will find something lovely soon. xx

There are companies that set everything up for you - glamping is very popular in the uk - you definitely don't have to be an expat or have been dubai'd to make the most of luxury camping! There's a company who provides the Winnebago type vans for the VIPs etc. They also do a ready set up site. Not used them myself but know of them. Worth contacting http://www.wagonwheelsonlocation.com/winnebago_hire_glastonbury.html# My sister lives close by and has been going to the festival since her eldest was a tiny baby so must be 20 odd years. They've now gravitated from a stinky old tent to a motor home. My nephew performed at this years festival! Enjoy every minute! Hope the link helps.

Just one other thing which occurs to me, TDB - I think you and your husband are going to have to accept that at least until your children turn teenagers, or go away for sleepovers, you cannot expect to have a lie-in beyond 5am. If you're very lucky, they'll sleep till 6am. They are children, they wake up early and wake up their parents because they want attention of one kind or another. Your days of sleeping in till 8, 9, or 10 am are gone for the duration. So don't even attempt to go there, cos it ain't gonna happen! edited by simpleasabc on 25/09/2013 edited by simpleasabc on 25/09/2013 Oh no! don't depress TDB! I have one who has always woken early but is and was as happy as larry to lie in bed. My other one just never wakes up - she loves her bed, has always loved her bed and sleeps for England, Dubai and the Universe! Each child is so different. bring them up the same way and they always find a way to bite your bum just when you think you've got it all sorted! With another baby on the way you most definitely need to get the sleeping in her own bed sorted out. You both need to be singing from the same page! My sister also had a big sleeper and a child who could only sleep with her dummy. If the dummy fell out the world stopped spinning. They worked out that she just needed more dummies! It was comical but she used to go to bed with 4 or 5 dummies pinned to her so when 1 unplugged she could find another one to plug herself in! Result was a great night sleep for all! she is now a beautiful 20 year old who sleeps all night and now most of the morning!!!! All kids do stuff at different times. My boy didn't crawl or cruise or move much at all but boy could he talk! He only walked a week before my baby girl arrived! Yes I was worried but my dad sat me down and told me that they all eat with a knife and fork by the time they are 20! He was right.......they all get there - some quicker than others - we all worry and compare so much - good luck - try and get your DH to give the baby time to grow up a little and I'm sure it will all work out. Congratulations!

You should meet with your landlord in person to hand the villa back. That way you can walk through with him. I would ot give the keys back until you deposit cheque is ready - you gt cheque snd e gets keys - simple! Take photos of each room as you are handing it back and get landlord to sing paper saying it is in a old condition that way you ave proof if e tres o reduce your deposit cheque especially if you say you have had problems with him. As far as wording is concerned just refer to in accordance with the terms of the lease between x and y dated xxxxx we hereby give notice to end this tenancy agreement on xxxxxx. I believe you have to send in letter form but send as e mail too making arrangements o meet to hand the property back.

We used DASA and they were superb. Easy to deal with good price. The packing team were excellent, the container arrived in line with their estimated dates we were kept well informed and the unpacker s in the UK were also superb I would highly recommend them. Friends of ours used lied pick fords and experienced delays, damage and underestimation of the size of container they ended. They ended up having to get a bigger shipment and the extra was sent separately which meant they ended up with beds arriving with no mattresses because the mattresses were on the different shipment. It was very stressful for them - so we avoided them! We chose DASA because they were the company who unpacked our shipment hen we arrived in Dubai - and they were great. Hope that helps you .

When we left we were given some beautiful gifts that we treasure and they are in pride of place in our new home. We were given 2 beautiful framed prints from gallery 1. We had a beautiful photo book on the changes of Dubai from a desert location to the city it is now today. My girlfriends got me a beautiful gold arabic name necklace which I adore. Could you pay for a photo shoot for your friend. We did this before we left and I got a whole load of the photos put onto canvas at Le cadre and packed them into the container - they are now scattered around our new hoe and are a fabulous reminder of our time in Dubai. I was also given some beautiful Arabic cook books The other things that I'm so glad we got were some beautiful lanterns like the ones in Al qasr and we have them dotted around the house. If you get them before the container goes they can go in the container. It's lovely to have some beautiful pieces to remind you of your time in Dubai. Hope that helps you

Well, my poor DD's first IVF transfer didn't work and the other 2 fertilised eggs didn't develop. She now has to wait until September for her second try under the NHS. Poor lamb, I just don't know how to console her :( :( it's such a roller coaster. My SIL had quite a few failed ivf attempts but had success on their final go and we have the most adorable niece wo the mum says was worth every single tear and boy there were loads of tears shed by us all on her journey to have her baby. Big hug to your daughter. I never thought I would have any children as I suffered many miscarriages but 2 came along very ate in the day one after the other so she must not give up hope. To the OP - it's a hard thing to decide. I had my babies late and after 2 fabulous pregnancies at 41 and 43 with a boy and a girl we felt going for another would be pushing our luck too far! I'm so happy with my gorgeous kids. Yes, it would have been lovely to ave had another ( I am 1 of 3) but we definitely made the right decision for us all. Many of my friends had that terribly strong urge for a 3rd child and most went on to have the 3rd child . No one can tell you - only you and your husband will know. 2 is easy 3 is probably a bigger car, definitely a bigger hotel room on family holidays. Those friends who went on to have 3 or 4 children say the 3rd makes a big difference ie the car and holidays. All the 3rd babies that came have all been adorable and slofted in beautifully to family life. My sister has 3 boys and had to make some big adjustments to accommodate another child but boy is he gorgeous and loved by all! Go with your heart! children are so precious and if you can provide a loving and caring home I'd go for it if I were you! Xxx

I'd definitely downsize - the apartments are so big in Dubai and there are so many to choose from. Silicon Oasis would be really handy for Academic city. I'd also look at sports city as the apartments there are lovely and you've got all the restaurants and coffee shops and spinneys there - a good easy commute to academic city. I'd also look at exec towers as it's fabulous there and the apartments are really gorgeous and you've got so many places to go to there plus really close to Dubai mall and all that has to offer and a pretty easy commute to academic city. If it was me I think I would change my flights out for an extra week and then you've got plenty of time to get sorted. you could book a removal company now we used global pack and they were excellent. packed everything moved it all and unpacked at the other end - would highly recommend. there's no point in having a big villa but lovely to have a big apartment for when you want to come over to visit. good luck!

Take a look on Rightmove.co.uk and put in Newbury and a 15 mile radius with a budget and you'll get some stunning properties that are on the market for sale or for rent. also some lovely schools if you need schools too. Some of us expats have paid into the system most or even all of our working lives, tax and NI.............and remained abroad on retirement. I don't think the numbers of expats in that category are doing to exactly swamp the system, it really irks me to think that people who have moved to UK from other countries can immediately claim on the basis of a few months tax, and in many cases, no contributions at all. Personally I am still fortunate enough to be able to pay for health insurance, but here in Cyprus there are many Brits who are living on very limited incomes, and ironically many of those have spent their entire working lives overseas on behalf of HM forces. The government was also happy enough to take a healthy chunk of any UK investment income, not to mention in my case nearly forty years of tax and NI .............. I agree alot of Expat's arent running to the UK for treatment. I know of someone recently, who was born in the UK never paid into the system, lived in Dubai since she was 3 years old, and she walked into the UK to give birth!!! just feel its so wrong!! It is a shame they cannot police it but eventually they may and it will save the NHS millions I asked my MIL what her ward did to police it, she said no resources, to me it would seem so simple for all the hospitals etc, to be able to access NI numbers, this would be a start, then check directly with NI contributions paid by each person, dont seem that hard!!!! but it must be, lol edited by salsB on 02/07/2013 I was asked loads of personal questions on my admission to hospital but not in number - it's a great idea but there's no way I would have known it while lying in a & e! When you register at a go you have paperwork to complete ad the hospital always ask for your gp details most people know that. edited by Clairehdp on 04/07/2013

Whereintheworld - I know people who have brought their housemaids over to the uk from Dubai but not recently so can't comment on the up to date requirements. I believe it used to be that they had been working for you for a period of at east 2 years but that may have changed. I don't have family support closeby but I have found some great local services that work out better than having a full time live in person. In London there are many options available to you. You could look at an au pair to help around the house or there are many cleaning agencies and laundry services and childminders etc etc to help you. When you say taking your help with you if only temporary I would be careful as she ay well have to return to her home nd not be able to return to work in Dubaii. If she's fabulous and you can ate her I would commit to her, if you can't commit o her help her find a new family in Dubai. Please Los remember that houses are not built with ready maids accommodation like in Dubai.

Great to hear people are doing so well after leaving the Middle East. We were also discussing this topic a few nights ago. We did our finances and realised that with all the increases (schooling, food etc) and living expenses that we are not saving money anymore, so the real purpose of why we came here is not even valid anymore. DH has also started applying for jobs back home. Scary but exciting....:) :) exciting times ahead!

The dinner cruise on bateaux Dubai is fabulous. The food is superb ( I'm sure their vegetarian option would be good) and you get to see Dubai from the creek. I loved it - very different and a great way to enjoy the sights. when did you last go? Feb and a friend of mine did it with her oarents last month and had a lovely evenjng. my husbands company also did it recently as a client evening - why - have you not had a good experience. One of my friends parents go each and every time they come over - it's one of their favourite things to do and the food has always been awesome. edited by Clairehdp on 03/07/2013 Oh yes, I go regularly, ever since they first started, but have seen a decline in food quality, very obviously. That is why I was wondering when you last went. In the beginning it was amazing and awesome, now it is ok, that is all. interesting - thanks for the feedback - might not be on my list then for my next trip!

You should only pay for repainting if you have, for example, painted a room a different colour after you've moved in. It's your choice who does the repainting. It is up to the LL to repaint after normal wear and tear. If you receive the apartment or villa freshly painted then it should be the same when you leave I have had this with all 5 properties Yes but at the LL expense - not yours unless you have re-painted walls in a different colour.

We moved back now almost 2 years ago (although we still spend quite a bit of time back in Dubai on holidays and my husband is there most months!). I had also been sucked into the whole life in Dubai is so fabulous and I'm not sure how I will cope but........I have to tell you ladies that it's been a very very pleasant experience. I miss my lovely Dubai friends although many are now back in the UK since we left anyway. I miss the sunshine but most definitely not the horrendous summer heat. What has surprised me more than anything is how much more sport and outdoor activities my kids do here in the UK compared to Dubai where it really is just too hot. Tennis, swimming, cricket, football, rugby, horse riding, rounders. They are both at a beautiful nurturing small traditional british prep school and have both had their best year ever personally and academically. I was welcomed and included from day 1 and have gone on to make some very special new friends through the children being at school. It's also been so lovely re-connecting with old friends from school days and college days and work days! Also lovely to be able to spend more time with my lovely mum and for the children to spend time with their cousins and Grandma. For us - yes we miss Dubai - but our life here in the UK is wonderful. We now have 2 great little dogs and I am walking in the most beautiful parks and forest locations. Yes it rains but you buy yourself some funky wellies and a big waterproof coat and there are hardly any days when you can't get out for fresh air. We toboggan in the snow at the back of our house in the winter. We had 21 people over last sunday sitting in the garden until 8 pm in the most amazing sunshine - I am sitting in the kitchen at the moment with all the patio doors open and the animals in and out of the garden. Friends of ours have all got good jobs - many having recently changed jobs so the market is not all doom and gloom. I am a member at one of the most beautiful spas in the UK and I feel incredibly lucky and happy with my life. I was very ill the other week and had to be rushed into hospital and I had the most amazing care at our local hospital on NHS. all in all. At the time of leaving Dubai I could never have imagined that we would all be so settled and happy so quickly. We return for our Dubai fix and to meet up with our friends and they all come and stay with us when they are over in the UK and we keep in close touch. I hope when you guys do make the move back that you will have a similar experience. If there is anything I can help with the tranisition please don't hesitate to shout! part of me wishes I had done more research and brought our lovely housemaid over with us but I felt there would not be a big enough philippino community for her. As we are living close to a very large hospital I was very wrong! there is a huge Philippino community and the supermarkets all have sections for the philippino foods that she loved. So that was something I fell down on however we have a gorgeous Polish cleaner and a lovely lady who has just arrived to pick up all my ironing and will bring it all back on hangers later - so life is good! edited by Clairehdp on 03/07/2013

we've been many times and have had superb holidays there. The general manager that we knew is no longer there and last time we were there was 2 years ago but many of my friends still go and have a lovely time. it's fabulous if you have kids and the indoor play area is excellent. Well run kids club. they really do cater for the kids. If you have no kids the other 2 hotels within the complex are superb - Al Waha kids friendly for sure, so too is the Al Bandar which is my favourite. Al Husn not suitable for kids but heaven for grown ups! We did a dhow cruise from there too and that was really special and we saw dolphins - it's a stunning location. Forgot to mention we always drove there. Often went in a convoy with friends and it was fine. edited by Clairehdp on 03/07/2013

Plenty of places in Satwa replace the flyscreen meshes. If you use the search button someone might have posted actual names of the places for you as it's definitely been on here before - hth

One of my friends parents go each and every time they come over - it's one of their favourite things to do and the food has always been awesome. edited by Clairehdp on 03/07/2013

Not the embassy but the POLO office.

Thanks ladies, I think we will contact the labour office to check. Domestic worker contracts are issued by immigration so not sure why you would need to contact the labour office. You and your housemaid would have signed a contract when her visa came through. All terms and conditions are on there. the usual is a return flight home and 1 months paid vacation time. We bought our housemaid a laptop in lieu of a bonus but she was superb and we were leaving so it was our way of giving her a bonus and something we knew she was saving her money up to buy. If she's been a good housemaid I wouldn't place a ban on her as she will not be able to go and work for someone else. If you've had problems with her then a ban is a good idea so she can't mess anyone else around but by the sounds of it this is not the case.

Claire I do hope that the time of day does not make a big difference - although I have heard about people avoiding this. We are actually flying dubai to Milan via Doha. So our dog will have to be transferred from one aircraft to the other around lunchtime!! My understanding is that animals are never left in the heat. Really hope this is true. But I do wonder exactly how they are transferred from the airport terminal onto the aircraft. I am really worried but qatar told me not to. Fingers crossed. I'm sure it will be fine. It's something I had never thought of it was something alison recommended which I thought was a good idea and thought I would pass on. I'm sure your little dog will be fine. Have a great summer break in Italy and hope to see you on one of my next visits!
