Land cruisers are superb. The service dept on szr is also excellent and you can pop into oasis centre for a coffee and by the time you've finished they will be on the phone to say your car is ready so no losing your car for a day. Plus the ac iis the best ever!

I love the ice cream place in Atlantis - Cold Stone Creamery or Marble Slab - can't remember which one but the staff are fabulous in there - a real show throwing the ice cream across for another server to catch in a cone! I would always take my guests there and they loved it for ice cream and entertainment factor!

Hi Ladies, We are due to renewal the lease on our villa and while the landlord is not putting the rent up, he wants us to pay him AED5000. Is this standard practice? TIA No you should sign a renewal at no charge. If he wants 5k it's just plain greedy. check with the rent committee they will confirm renewal at no charge. Just draw up the renewal document yourself exactly the same as your last one with the change of dates then he can't charge you for anything anyway. I would check with rent committee and then let your LL know you have checked with them and that he can't charge. they try it on don't they! If they can't get it one way - they'll try another!

When we came from the UK the rabies vaccine is stamped as valid for 3 years, guess it depends on which brand you get. After our first year we went to get the dogs re vaccinated and felt sick when we were told that because the Rabies had been done over 1 year ago we had to start agan as they would not be granted access back to UK. I couldn't get my head around this as their passports were clearly valid. So I had the jabs done, and went away to get confirmation from DEFRA. DEFRA said that as far as they were concerned whatever was in the passport was adequate. The vet had confused themselves between the local requirement of annual Rabies and the UK policy. So I didn't need to get another blood test done, and only had the rabies done to comply with the UAE local policy. But this would not have had anyimpact on us flying the dogs home as their passport vaccines were still valid for re entry. And as I mention below as of 1 Jan you are no longer required to get the blood test done for UK entry, so it makes travel much easier so long as you do as others have said and keep all the vaccines upto date. This is where the confusion is - it's not the Defra people it's the Dubai end - they require that the rabies vaccs are repeated every year. Thank God alison from the Dubai Doghouse told me - she stressed - it doesn't matter what the Defra people state - in the passport our rabies was good for 2 or 3 years - it's the people in Dubai that need them done annually in order for the pets to leave Dubai...... I put the date in my calendar with a reminder for a week before and it all worked out fine for us and Millie is happy sheltering under the ferns at the bottom of our garden and sitting on the golf course watching the players in the cool weather!

As someone who brought their cat over from uk to Dubai and also returned with their cat to the uk I can confirm that you do not need to do the blood test every year. You DO however need to keep the rabies vaccination up to date ANNUALLY and not , as they tell you in the UK, every 2 years! And......if you get the booster one a day after the year you have to start all over again and do the titre test so.......to all animal owners from the uk.....if you brought your animals over with their pet passports please set a date in your diaries for a week less than a year to get the booster done that way you can leave Dubai with your animal whenever you like - they just need frontline and worming before they fly back. I used Blue oasis vets at the green community and alison from dubai doghouse and they are well versed in what needs to be done. My gorgeous cat, Millie, at the ripe old age of 15 made her return journey back to the trees and grass last summer and we had no problems at all.

I think it's a waste of money when the kids are young. It's a phenomenal place when the kids are 7 plus. I've been a few times and each time it's got better because the kids are older. The last time we went we got there for the opening and the place was quiet and both kids did everything they wanted to do and had the best day ever! I'd save your money and take him when he's a bit older and can do so much more. edited by Clairehdp on 02/08/2012

Marina this is an amazing recipe for fall off the bone juicy lamb. Jamie uses shoulder but leg works fine too. You'll have to substitute red wine vinegar with something for the gravy - I would probably stir in some red currant jam or use some cranberry juice. http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/lamb-recipes/incredible-roasted-shoulder-of-lamb-with

The new owner takes over your tenancy contract. Our ll sold the villa we were in bu5 we paid in one cheque so it was sorted out between the owner and the new owner - not sure what happens when you pay with multiple cheques. Presumably you would pay the remaining cheques to the new owner. You need to be given 1 year notice to quit if the new owner wants to move in by the way if you have a renewable contract.

Rent a speedboat and organise champagne and canapés. Even though it's hot it I'll be much cooler on the water with the sea breeze. A little swim off the boat and the best bit is you get to enjoy it too.

Not sure where I got this from but isn't it supposed to be 1 day per 1 hour of time difference before you get back to normal? So.....if you can stick to her old routine it should only take 3 nights to get her back. If she's been sleeping with you on the holiday I think it's more difficult because they want that to continue but you need to be strong, reassure her you are there but don't get her up. Snuggle her down reassure her mummy is here and do it as many times as you feel you need to hugging her but NOT getting her up. Tell her it's night time, sleep time, whatever works in you house ( in ours it's night night time) she just needs to readjust to her surroundings and needs reassurance that you are near. I watched the super nanny programme once where a family had a child of 3 who had never gone through the night - they had to do the settle down and reassure routine over and over again - it was awful to watch but it worked after a couple of nights and the child got a good nights sleep and was a different child the next day - the mother was also so much better too. If you are so tired it might be better for your dh to do the going in and snuggling down and you get yourself in bed because you need your rest too! Good luck, be strong it will be worth it for everyone - not just your little one. Another thing to remember is at 20 months they are not little babies they are clever little people who know what buttons to press to get their own way! You need to show her who is the boss!!

Having moved back to the uk last summer and having had 3 companies in to quote I would say a great big no. The price range was enormous. I don't think it's underhand it's just that some people will pay and others won't ......remember it's not just the container it's how many men they will send over to pack, what they use to pack, how they wrap, how many men load the container - there are lots of variables to consider. Cheapest is not always the best our neighbours dd cheapest a few years ago and had quite a bit of damage. We lost 2 bike pedals in our move back and no damage we went for mid range and ended up using the same people who moved us over to Dubai ad it was a very very good experience.

I think that's a lovely thing to do for your mum. As you say you knw your Mum. I don't think there's anything insulting about helping where you can. You will find that most cleaning services in the UK you pay the cleaner direct so....why not make an arrangement with one of our brothers that you pay a direct debit into their account nd they leave the cleaners money in an envelope each week. Most cleaning services in the uk will also do the ironing too! Molly maids is a huge franchise that operates all over the uk I have no experience of them as I didn't like the woman who came over to see me so I didn't take it any further with them! Where abouts in London is your mum I can see if I can get a recommendation for you if I have a friend in the same area. There are agencies in london where you interview and choose your own lady - maybe your mum might like that. Let me know if I can help you. I'd highly recommend my cleaners but they don't work in the London area but she may have a contact. I have 2 girls that come in for 2 hours and they nuke my house back to a show home , they are superb! Your mum will come to love it I'm sure!

Wild Wadi is better in the summer than Atlantis because they spray the floor so it's not so hot. Your little one can spend most of their time in the young kids play area, on the lazy river with you and bouncing around in the wave pool. there's Aqua play at Mirdif City Centre which is nice for the little ones. Cite Des Enfants, Mirdif City Centre Snow park Ski Dubai Ice Age 4 should be out soon so get a cinema trip in too!

Hi! We were told by the rent committee that an owner is perfectly free to sell his property but it is sold with tenants. The tenants have rights and should be given a formal written notice of 12 months. We explained this to our LL who has no idea of the rules and regs. He gave us a new lease for another year but a non renewable lease as this was our 12 months notice. He went on to sell the property and the new owner knew that we would be leaving after our 12 months contract. At the end of the day - the new owner decided not to move in themselves and put the property on the rental market giving us first refusal on staying there but we had already decided to leave Dubai anyway. I suppose if your property is sold it's correct that the old owner will not be renewing your contract however I would get down to the rent committee and have a chat to see how the law would view your situation. You should have been given a years notice but....as you haven't and the property is already sold I'm afraid I'm not sure how the court would view this. They are usually on summer break for cases but there should be people there for advice. Go before Ramadan is my advice! Good luck! To be honest - your Landlord really should not have given you a lease and within a month of your new lease advise you that he was selling - to be fair to all he should have given you the years notice then and issued a non renewable lease......

Hello BM! Hope you're doing OK. We had various issues with 2 villas - one was an eviction notice after just a year in the villa - we took them to the rent committee and won our case and they were told we should be allowed to stay for up to 3 years. The other issue was we were given notice by our new LL that he would not be renewing our lease because he wanted to sell - again we nipped to the rent committee for advice and we were told he was free to sell his property but that he had to give us 12 months notice. He was told that he could sell his property at any time with tenants and the new owners had to honor our lease.......so he renewed our lease, giving us a new non-renewable lease so we got our 12 months notice. As it happened the new owners (the property was sold) decided not to move in and would have rented to us but we had decided to leave at that point anyway so it was no issue for us.

I checked with my very technical dh for you both and got a very technical response. Emily I will have to get him to tell me again for you as he was scratching his head but was going to check something on ours and report back....... Nicky he said that on the back of the sky box there is a reset button and because your Iinlaws have moved the box needs to be reset through the new router. According to him you have to press this button and hold it down and it will reset the system. He did then go on about resetting the channels on the remote which we did from Dubai with someone pressing the channel buttons in the uk but it might be easier to do it all when you are back in the uk

You don't say how old your children are but if they are young I would highly recommend you look at The Children's Garden - they go up to KG2 (although I would move at KG1). You choose English/French or English/German. Most of the children who wish for a bi-lingual education go on to Greenfields from The Children's Garden on the Green Community. I have no experience of Greenfields but my 2 children attended The Children's Garden in english/French and loved it there. both are run by Taleem http://www.childrensgarden.ae/en/curriculum/ http://www.gcschool.ae/language-teachers

By the time we pay school fees my husband's salary is much the same. We get ZERO flights home and have just discovered that our medical insurance is not adequate and looks like we are going to have to fork out 2400 dirham a year to take adequate cover. It is doable but depends what lifestyle they are prepared to have.I noticed in supermarket that depending what brands etc one could treble their shopping bill but I did find it was possible to cut cost right back. We're not actually out. We were out for a month and husband has been there since Jan but I'm confident we can do it although not quite sure whether we'll ever get any holidays LOL. we are fortunate in that we have savings to cover the upfront costs as not sure what we would have done without them. Hugsy - interested in where/how you got a car for that price. My husband is quoting figues of 2.8k to me a month which is just way too much. I would get your DH to look at his package again - you say no flights home - blimey - even housemaids contracts give them an annual flight home - I thought all expat workers had to be provided with either a flight home or the equivalent in money - would be worth looking into that. maybe some hr person on here who is up on the labour laws can help you with that. Not sure I'd come out if no flights and not a good medical package......do they really want you or not..... worth looking - you may find they were trying it on and will provide you with your annual flight home..... good luck!

the botanical gardens a drive through the sugar cane plantations is interesting and you might see wild boar I had an amazing meal in a restaurant right up in the forest - you drive up in a 4 x 4 and the restaurant is right at the top - spectacular views and the food was amazing - sorry can't remember the name. visit the markets at Port Louis Mauritius is a small island and well worth exploring. enjoy - I'm very jealous!!!! We visited the new shopping centre (can't remember the name) at Port Louis and felt safe but we were advised to avoid the main market used by the locals due to bag snatchings and pick pockets. I'm not sure if it has changed but that was 2 or 3 years ago. How sad..... I loved strolling around the market. I felt perfectly safe but it was a few years ago now - in fact have been a few times. I think if you are aware of that you should be OK if you dont take a whole load of money with you. One of the things I love about travelling to different countries is visiting the local markets and buying the local produce. I hope they sort this problem out - thanks for the warning.

Take your phil and teds. Don't take a trunki! I've seen so many kids fall off those at the airport and end up crying and having to be carried and then what do you do? Store the double buggy in friends garages if necessary. You may find that the little ones might stuggle with jet lag for the first few days and you'll need to use the double buggy and - as you say - you can always use it to transport the hand luggage. the quinny buzz is great for one little one but not good for 2 and it's way too light to hang bags on. Hope that helps but as someone who regularly travelled with 2 little ones it's far better to have 1 bigger buggy that can accommodate both kids for when they get tired and cranky.

It is illegal to employ a maid part time unless she is working through an agency so if I were you I would delete your name and contact details as soon as you can because you could find yourself with a huge fine and the maid will be deported....... the only legal way to to this is to either employ a housemaid and sponsor her yourself or hire an agency maid to help you. If this maid has been in dubai for 19 years she will know that she is working illegally - maybe her madam found out she was doing part time work and let her go...... there are always 2 sides to every story but by working for you she runs the risk of getting you into big trouble.

It's the rent committee office you need to go to to file a case, it's in the Municipality building - not the Rera offices. with the rent committee it's always best to go in person. They are super helpful and can guide you as to whether you have a good case. Remember that this time of year is their busiest so be prepared to wait. We would go very very early in the morning so we were first in line. On the 2 occasions that we needed help they were superb. we ended up filing one case - the others we just took advice and presented the findings to our LL who had to stand down on the eviction notice he was trying to serve and then stand down on the rental increase he was trying for too! The case we filed we won in less than 5 minutes in the court room. As a tenant you are well protected - unfortunately many LLs in Dubai feel they are above the law. Good luck to all who are being bullied - get yourself to the rent committee for support and advice.

Yes the rent committee do close for a time over the summer but if you file your case and it's close to the end of their term they will give you a hearing date when they are next open. It means you just stay in your property whether the tenancy still has time to run or if it's run out. as long as your case is filed you can stay and your LL will have to attend the hearing. It's a stressful time but tenants are well looked after by the rent committee and if you have a genuine case you will be fine. They are very helpful and very sympathetic - they've seen all types of scams that the Landlords try to play on us. Mmmmmmm what is the problem you are dealing with? You can file a case at any time. good luck. It's not as bad as it sounds. We filed a case after being advised by the rent committee that we had a very good case against our Landlord. They helped us and we were given our hearing date there and then. It was fine and......a few weeks later we won our case!

I can't comment on the golf villas as they were building them when we lived in Jumeirah Islands. We lived in Jumeirah Islands for 3 years. some of the build quality of the villas is not great - you really need to view many as some clusters are worse than others. We lived on a cluster that was not right on the water and so didn't suffer from the mozzies but many people on the water did have a pretty bad time with the mozzies. Also some of the water ways smelt pretty bad but again, if you choose away from the water you are not affected. It was a very friendly community. They have some lovely play areas and the new community centre with gym and pool is lovely. We moved from Jumeirah Islands to Arabian Ranches and out of those 2 places I would choose Arabian Ranches any day. It really depends where your husband will be working and then which schools you will be sending your children to. Try to live as close to both as you can. I spent an awful lot of time driving when I lived in Jumeirah Islands - arabian ranches is far more central to everything.
