Out in the desert in August with a 7 month old baby - there's no way I'd do that. As spirit gunner says go when it's cooler and you can enjoy everything the desert resort has to offer. In August all you need is a chilled pool and lovely air conditioned restaurants that are easy to get to. If it was me I'd book into al qasr to celebrate they have wonderful summer rates.

There's no way on earth you can do Fujairah- Dubai in 40 mins. We spent a lovely Easter in fujairah but it took quite a bit longer than 40 mins for us to get there and to drive back. It's a really easy journey though and I LOVE fujairah.

There are lots of gorgeous islands so why dont you get the boat guys to take you to your own desert island. We did that and it was magical. They laid out an amazing picnic for us on our own island and left us on there for an hour or so. The kids loved it and explored and hunted for treasure! Ask the boat company to provide a beach umbrella. They then took us to other little islands and we anchored off and snorkelled with the kids. They put out a rope from the back of the boat that the kids could hold onto and showed them how o used the masks and snorkels ( they provided all the equipment). The kids fed fish etc and one of the guys kept diving down and coming back up with starfish, sea slugs, hermit crabs etc etc it was a magical day and the kids still talk about it even though it was a few years ago. We didn't want to go to the crowded islands but wanted to experience some of the beauty of the islands - we relied on the guys local knowledge and experience and it was absolutely perfect. edited by Clairehdp on 10/04/2012

Why on earth would u be doubling her salary unless you were not paying her the going rate? I think that's an odd thing to say. Mauve if you had paid her more and understood her family situation this could ave avoided her writing you a note nd leaving. I would yext her and give her a date snd time by which to contact you before you go to immigration and file her as absconding and let the authorities deal with her. You will not be able o take on another girl while he s still on your sponsorship.

Thanks for all the replies ladies! So its looking like Le Meridien and Miramar are the best contenders. A little put off by the sounds of the beach, but guess we could always just laze around the pool instead. We're going to be spending a further 3 nights in RAK at the Hilton resort (cant wait...I LOVE it there!! :) ) so trying to decide if its best to do Al Aqah, or spend a couple of days in the mountains somewhere like Hatta Fort or Khatt Springs....hmmm.....decisions decisions!! You can't compare le meridien and hatta fort - hatta is so tired- had a great lunch there last summer but it's tatty. Do le meridien and gt a wonderful pampering in their adorable spa.

I always say le meridien al aqah as we've never been disappointed and have always had superb service, food etc. we stayed for 1 night at the hilton and checked out the next day (a few years ago now so may well be different) - the staff and service ware excellent but the hotel was very tired so if you want a special time away avoid like the plague. If it was me planning a baby moon I'd book into the Ras al khaimah resort and spa in one of the beach villas with its own plunge pool/jaccuzi and have the chefs cook a special BBQ on the terrace. You can also stock up with bubbles from the wine store at the hotel before you leave! Heaven I love it there.

Claire, dose this apply though if the tenant hasn't given full 60 day notice ? Not 100% sure. If you've not given required notice but if it's a renewable contract I think it's mre important to give notice to quit rather than to stay. I would be up at the rent committee in the morning with my contract or some advice - they're really nice in there.

As long as you have a renewable contract (ie it does not stipulate non-renewable) you have every right to stay for at least another year and often longer. The ll always try ths on in the hope you don't know the laws. The rent committee are there to rotect you from unscrupulous landlords . Do a search on here there has been a coupe of recent cases where ew members have stuck to their guns and won. Good luck.

Thanks Biscuit Maker for your reply, the Abra sunset trip sounds fantastic, will definelty try it, what about the Burj Khalif tour? is it worth it? do i need to book in advance or i can just walk in?? the 'At the Top' of Burj Khalifa is really good - much much cheaper if you book ahead on line. Best time to go imo is just before sunset so you are there for the end of the days sun and see the sun set from there. If you really want to see the city I'd take myself off on the Big Bus Tour you can do this while your DH is at his conference - you'll see all the interesting bits of Dubai in one hit. It also includes the Dubai Museum and a creek cruise - definitely worth it and I think you can run it over 2 days. Why not go skiing at Ski Dubai!!!

We used airpets from the uk and they were superb. Very easy to deal with. They collected our cat from our house and took her out to the airport for us. She was met and cleared through in Dubai by Alison from the Dubai doghouse who was superb too! We have since returned to the uk and Alison sorted out the return arrangements for us. Our cat was beautifully looked after and arrived back to the uk safe and well. I would highly recommend both airpets and Alison.

Ladies well done for sticking to your rights. Tiger lily well done for seeing it through to rent committee hearing - its fascinating isn't it and good to know that you do have rights and they are upheld! If only more people would stand up for their rights here and not give in to the LL s bulky tactics . Jc11 why don't you tell your LL that you will sign the contract and lodge it with your rent cheque at the rent committee - I bet if you tell him that you will get him to sign very quickly! edited by Clairehdp on 26/03/2012

I went I holland on a school trip when I was about 7 and I have ever forgotten keukenhof - it was the most beautiful place with all the tulips! We Los went o a theme park which was magical and I have never been able to remember the ame muurtjie can you tell e what it is and where it is please - it was very Hans christen Anderson! It had giants and dwarfs and I loved every minute there it's somewhere I'd love to go back to now i have children of my own who are a similar age to the age I was when I went there. Re Paris - don't miss out the Eiffel tower my kids loved it up there. We also sat in the park outside and had a lovely picnic and took some amazing pictures of the kids with the Eiffel owner right behind them. Friends of ours last year hired a motor home and had the holiday of a lifetime travelling around Europe. They took their 3 small kds and the photos show just how amazing it was so maybe an idea to consider. It was amazing at how much they managed to cram into 2 weeks!

How about joining the Sailability team at DOSC. I joined there and would be there every Wednesday morning. They teach children with special needs how to sail. The look on the children's faces when they are in the boats and out on the water is a moment you will never or get. When I was there 2 of the guys took out the access dinghies on their own after working so hard to learn how to sail. Those of us who were on the jetty to help get them into the boats all had tears in our eyes as these 2 boys were pushed off and they sailed the boats out from the sailing club out to the open sea. I personally got so much out of it. Spending a morning with such an amazing group of people all so different but all there with a common desire to help. You don't have to be a sailor as there are so many different activities that the children do. Lots of stuff to learn on firm ground. I think each and every volunteer learnt something new. We all underwent disability awareness training and other courses are offered for the volunteers so not only are you helping these children to be more independent but you get an opportunity to learn new tricks yourself. I looked forward to my Wednesday mornings so much. Sailability contact details are on the DOSC website. Sign up twig let - I promise you it's an amazing thing o get involved in with an amazing bunch of people. http://www.dosc.ae/sailability-volunteering/

Yeah I went a coupe of weeks ago for lunch - its different and the food was good. There were only 2 other people there so lacked any atmosphere. I loved the iPad menus but my friend hated them. Took a while to do our order by having to choose all the individual ingredients for your pasta sauce but it was different and fun. I'd definitely go again.

I think you have been more than generous. Perhaps she hasn't completely understood your reasons for her moving on but I would keep the gold bars for now. Maybe see how she is and if you can have a relationship later on why not give her the gold when she comes to leave Dubai for ever. If you are not able to have a relationship with her then keep the gold for yourselves or - as another poster has said - donate to a well deserving charity. don't beat yourself up on this - you are a very very caring person - unfortunately not everyone is as caring as you.....

As someone who's housemaid did not come back after a holiday I would NOT pay her the April salary but tell her that she will get it on her return and as a gesture of goodwill offer to pay her the cost of the transfer (it's only a few dhs anyway to transfer). Our housemaid had every intention of returning (all her stuff was in her room) but her husband had other ideas - so you really don't know what she is facing when she gets home and how she will feel. I think you are being more than fair. She is taking her holiday early so don't feel bad.

We were quoted 6 weeks from Geneva, and that's about the time it took. Bear in mind that you (the working partner/sponsor) must have a valid work contract/labour card and residence visa in place before you can sign a contract for a villa. Serviced apartments would be the best idea for the interim - are there no quarantine regulations for bringing cats into the UAE? I mean, wouldn't the cats be kept somewhere anyway before you could pick them up to move them into your home in Dubai? No - as long as your cats have their pet passports and all vaccinations etc are up to date and they have had the rabies jab and test then you can pick your cat up at the airport and bring her straight to your villa.

Our cheapest movers were about 1 500...but twas a bit disasterous as they packed the contents of my deep freeze in a box marked curtains, and the curtains in a cooler box...And the most expensive was 2800. This was for moving a 3 bedroom villa with outside furniture and stuff around. The real costs are the deposits for dewa, du, etisilat, agent's fees...blah, blah, blah... Yeah you're so right - it's not just the removal costs it's all the other things that mount up and then you have new windows and non of your curtains fit them etc etc!!!!!

My parents loved The Wharf at Mina A Salaam - british style menu and not to expensive. Lovely setting right by the water with the BAA in the background. another favourite was the Grand Grill at the Habtoor Grand hotel - superb steaks, chicken, ribs - not overly fancy and with entertainer vouchers fantasdtic! our new hobby ....moving! I hate it... We such a nice place now and I don't want to move. I should starting now praying....that the Agent finds an investor and we hopefully could stay. You have rights and should be able to stay. You should not have to move every year. If you sign a renewable contract then you can stay. Your Landlord may say he wants to move in or he wants to sell - he can sell with you as tenants. If he wants to move in he has to give you a years notice so the bear minimum you get to stay will be 2 years - not 1. Moving is expensive - you'll never get to save money if you hve to move every single year. the Rent committee are there to help you and protect your rights as a tenant. Do not sign non renewable contracts and start to enjoy living in a place you can call a home. If you have a rewnewable contract now then just don't move - you like where you are - tell your LL you intent to renew.

The Polo Club do some lovely parties. The Hilton Jumeirah have reasonably priced parties in their gardens. Emirates Golf Club do a mean party too To be honest virtually every hotel in Dubai will host a party. I've seen a stunning party in the grounds of hte Grand Hyatt I believe you can hire out the cabana area at The Address Oooooh so many options you are lucky. The Ivy has a semi private area - not sure of numbers but that would be fab too!
