I used to use Dubai Laundry they were excellent and seem to cover most areas of Dubai - I always recommend them and often people come back on here to say how happy they were with them.

I would absolutely agree with emlsnre - if I had had the opportunity to put my 2 children into school as soon as we arrived back it would have been fantastic. You will have so much to do and it's really hard to get organised with kids who are bored and want to do stuff. As emlsnre says - it gives them the opportunity to start at their school, get to know their surroundings and start to make new friends who they can see over the long summer break. If I was in your shoes - knowing what I know about leaving Dubai and arriving back home.....I would get them into the school a day or 2 after you get back. Wow - that, for me, would have been absolute heaven and I could have been sooooo much more organised. Worldgirl - as your older child is returning 'out of rounds' then you can apply to any of the local schools and they have to offer her a place if they have one available. So returning earlier than the start of the new school year will mean that you can choose which schools to apply to and, if the best local school is out of your catchment area you can still apply however......your little one will be 'in rounds' so it will be far more tricky to get a place in the 'best' school. Some schools do have a sibling priority - others don't. We thought we'd return to the UK earlier than we actually did so I did all the paperwork and applied to the schools I wanted - I got my little boy into my school of choice even though it was out of catchment area because he was 'out of rounds' - luckily that school had a sibling priority and I would have been able to get my little girl in there too - we didn;t go back - I released the places as soon as I knew so you could be lucky and someone like me might have those places and release them just as you apply. The only restriction is that the places cannot be offered before 6 weeks of start date. You will need proof of your UK address. good luck - where are you relocating to in the north? I have a great friend from Dubai who relocated 18 months ago and her little boy returned to his old school and her daughter got into a top senior school - both kids are doing fantastic.

Do the Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort and Spa (don't get it mixed up with the other Hilton - it's got to be the resort and spa) your kids will love the kids pool it's got a lovely tube slide and it's safe. Good kids club too but to be honest ours just spend hours in the pool and on the beach. there's a duty free booze shop there too so adults have a lovely time too!!!!! I would highly highly recommend it. they are set up for kids and it's a beautiful, beautiful location right on the beach. Very nice spa too for Mummies!!!!!

Clairehdp, Have you left to educate the children too? No because mine are only little and I was very very happy with their education there. I needed to be back to support my Mun after losing my Dad. Having said all of that - my socks have been blown off at the education here. My kids have never done schooling in the UK and it's truly amazing. they play so much sport I just can't keep up with what they're doing - where they're playing and who they're playing against - very happy with it all over here. Snoop where abouts are you?

It's simple. If you cancel your visas then it will be illegal. Your DH should not have a full time live in housemaid as he has batchelor status and he could be fined, your housemaid placed in jail etc etc. Keep your visas running and come backwards and forewards for all the holidays and she can remain in your home and you then get the benefit that you will also be looked after in the school holidays. If it was me and you decide to cancel the visas I would work really hard with your housemaid to find her a lovely new family and then get an agency who will commit to sending in the same person every week and get them over and train them with your housemaid and yourself before you leave. As far as home cooked meals etc - the agency maid could be trained to do some batch cooking for the freezer or you could get your DH to order meals from casserole - they are meant to be amazing - like M&S meals. And...... I'm sure he could cook himself a few bits and pieces - maybe he migth even enjoy it!!! good luck! We are back in the UK now. I've just got back from a mad girlie weekend there with no kids - highly recommend it! We chose to cancel our visas and the guy at immigration commented to me why you cancel visa when you come back here so many times!!!!!! We were back in December, I was there last week and we are back for easter - so - your trips will probably be in the same pattern - might well be best to keep them running..... Where are you coming back to in the UK?

It is hard when a special friend leaves but if we all said we weren't prepared to make the effort any more like some are saying then it's going to make it even more difficult for others to make friends. You may well miss out on the bestest friend ever! I'm in a very happy place at the moment - lots of my Dubai friends have relocated and now I am back in the UK I'm seeing my old 'home; friends and now my old 'Dubai' friends too. More are coming back. I'm flying over there tonight for a girlie weekend with the special friends who are still in Dubai - I can't wait. As Elaine says, it takes effort to make friends and keep friends especially so when yuu are an expat but I have to say that it's very rewarding to have friends in so many different locations. I met up with friends who I used to work with 20 years ago and it was like we had never been away - 2 of us lived abroard for a long time and we are organising a big reunion which I know will take lots of organising but it will be soooooo worth it on the night!

Does anyone have a blank tenancy contract that they can email me so that I can fill it in ready for signing when I eventually meet him? I don't want to leave anything to chance. I think Dubaicat has blank tenancy contracts - put a shout out to her. Good luck - not turning up to meetings and court hearings are always a sign that they realise they are on a sticky wicket!

If you are planning on doing lots of shopping from the UK you would be far better opening a shop and ship account and they deliver to your door - we saved so much money this way.

Thanks everyone. In my heart I know what do to - go back asap and be with my dad, and bring my kids with me I think. But I wish I did not have to go. I wish he was healthy. He's so young - only just turned 60. I thought we would have more time. He doesn't deserve to die in pain. Gummy I hope you are able to go with your kids and spend some time with your Dad. Please don't get upset at the thought of pain because now pain can be controlled very effectively and he will be made to feel comfortable. My FIL final few days were peaceful and pain free and he was surrounded by family and friends - it wasn't at all scary like I thought it would be - he got to spend time with everyone - I found it really hard saying goodbye when I had to leave with the children because I knew I would never see him again - the kids just gave him their usual big hug and kiss - they were too young to realise how important that goodbye Grandad was going to be. Your kids will get a chance to be with him, to chat to him about their life in Dubai and to hug him. I wrote my father in law a special letter promising him that i would look after his son and would look after his wife. I was able to say things in the letter that I didn't get the chance to say in person because of the children being there and lots of visitors popping in to see him. He asked my husband to thank me for my letter so I know he left this life knowing that his nearest and dearest would be cared for and that was really the only thing he was worried about.. Big hugs to you

Why don't you hire what you need. there's a company there called rentacrib and they are excellent. when visitors have come to stay we have used them for various baby stuff and they've been excellent. Most of the bits we have hired have been brand new too. Here's their website with prices and items that they rent out. http://www.rentacrib.ae/index.htm Failing that he can go to babyshop/mothercare/carrefour - all have reasonably priced baby items or you could take a look on dubizzle for 2nd hand items or - put a shout out on here to see if you could borrow stuff until your items arrive.

It's one of the hardest things about being away from home when a parent is terminally ill. We had this similar situation with my husbands father. I managed to speak to his macmillan nurse to get a feel for how long we were looking at. she was so helpful. I found that the Drs and the hospital are very difficult to deal with as they don't want to give you the wrong information but a nurse who is spending lots of time with the individual and who deals with cancer patients day in and day out really do seem to have a good feel for where they are in their illness. We all flew back as we wanted the children to see their grandad before he got too ill. We were guided by the macmillan nurse which was so, so helpful. we were able to get him into a beautiful hospice and spent some really lovely time with him. We decided that my DH would stay on and be with his dad as much as he could so set up his office in the hospice and was able to work while his dad slept and was there with him. I took the children back after saying goodbye and seeing him look rested and very very well cared for. He was expected to last a few more weeks at that time. We landed back in Dubai and within an hour of me and the kids walking back into the villa I got the call from my husband to say his dad has passed away - much earlier than expected but in a gentle way. Friends rallied round and my best friend from the UK flew over to take over the care of the children. My Dubai friends were amazing - some cooked meals - others did school runs - all looked after my friend and my kids while I was back in the UK to organise the funeral and support my husband. I think if I were in your shoes I would go to see him with the kids. You will be amazed at how people will rally around and help you - as the children are home schooled they won't miss out from school and hopefully you can plan lessons and let others do these with the children. It's one of the worst times for you and my heart goes out to you. I lost my lovely dad last year and I didn't manage to get back to be with him I was on the plane when he passed away so I would say to you - go.....spend as much time as you can with your Dad - take the opportunity to chat to him and tell him how much you love him - my husband got that precious time with his dad - I sadly did not and it's something I feel sad about each and every day. People will tell you that he knows you love him but for me - being there and actually saying it and holding your Dad is something I would have loved to have been able to do. Your children are still young - I think you just need to call on your relatives and freinds back home and ask everyone if they can help you. Take them with you and decide with your husband when he should come - to say goodbye or to support and help you when he has gone. Again, having gone thorugh this horrible situation I really needed my husband after my Dad had gone and he needed me when his Dad had gone. I send you a very big hug and hope you can find a way to be with your dad for as long as you can. xxxxx

Is it still a rule by the KHDA that the private schools here cannot charge more than a 500dh deposit to hold a childs place for the following school year? (per Articles 52.1 & 52.2 of the Private Education Bylaw from the Ministry of Education) It's a law that schools find a way around and KHDA do nothing about! edited by Clairehdp on 05/03/2012

Anyone got any suggestions? I used Howdra for babysitting when I first arrived in Dubai - they were excellent. I had the girl come in during the week to clean and get to know the kids and then booked her for evening babysitting so if the kids did wake up they would know her - they didn't wake up at all and she was lovely. Happy all round!

Tigerlilly - we have been through this and it's very stressful but......once you get into the room with the rent judge (it is like a proper courtroom) you get your chance to put your case forward and, as it's your case you will be asked why you are there. Please make sure that your DH covers all the important facts. Is this your first renewal, have you spent money on the house, do you have children who are settled, have you had to do the garden, have you had to pay money on maintaining the property. We prepared a whole list of things to help our case but as soon as we said this is our first renewal and the LL wants to move in they almost shouted at him and asked him why he was wasting everyone's time. We got to put our other reasons forward but to be honest - they were still barking at him as to what the law was and that if he wanted to move in after a year he should extend his lease with his own landlord and give us 12 months notice! In fact, he was told that if he had a problem with his landlord to file his own case and bring his own landlord to the court!!!! He was then told that he was to allow us to stay in the property for up to 3 years (which we did). So..... you do have rights as tenants and the rent committee judge does not like to see LL flouting their laws. I am sure you will have a good result and your LL will be very annoyed because your costs are taken off his next rent cheque so he will be down 3.5% on the rent that he charged you last year - serves him right for being so greedy. Make sure you mention that he wanted an increase first and then said he would move in....... you WILL win - he CAN'T do this to you. Good luck and honestly - it's nowhere near as scary as you think it is going to be. In fact, it's really nice to see that we, as tenants do have protection. It's a shame more people don't stand up to their LL - if more people did this it would make the other LL think twice about trying it on! Let us know how you get on.

she's not barking mad!!! We have had snow today in the south so they were bound to have snow in Manchester! My husband travels alot and often he lands but if there is bad weather he can be delayed. So the flight will show it touched down on time or close to arrival time but it might take them much longer to get off the plane. December 2010 we arrived on time at Heathrow and then sat on the tarmac for almost 3 hours because it had started to snow and they couldnt de-ice the planes quick enough to get them off and the planes landing had nowhere to go and the airport became gridlocked. they eventually closed the airport to incoming flights I think we were of the last to land. So she's probably absolutely right but at least she's at home now safe and sound!

Bite the bullet and go out with your husband early on a Friday morning the roads are really quiet and you can have a drive around and get your bearings. It's really not so bad at all. I had to jump in the car within a week of arriving because my husband was off on a business trip so I had no time to think about it - i think that's probably the best way but you've had too much time to think about it. Go for it - you;'ll be so pleased with yourself. I wouldnt spend any money on any driving lessons you know you can drive!

A class needs to be made up of all different types to make it work well. Not every child needs to be outgoing and gregarious - a class needs quieter children to balance a class so please don't stress - he's only little and it's a big thing for them to go into schools and make that change. My little girl is pretty lively and noisy at home but when she went for her assessment she was very quiet and shy - it's fine.

If you are in motor city I'm not sure why you are looking at schools in dso as there are schools closer to mc than dso or is it that your husband works at dso and would do the morning school run? Closest ib school would be greenfield community school then gems world academy. Closest Brit curr school would be jess on Arabian ranches. If you are happy to drive then the following are good Brit curr schools and not too bad journey wise from motor city Jebel Ali primary school Dubai British school Repton

what age is/are your child/children what curriculum are you looking for. You may find that you will have to travel from that area for the school. for example - if you are looking for australian curriculum - there is an australian school further down emirates road from DSO too - if you give fuller information I'm sure you'll get lots of good advice. People do travel quite a bit for the right school for their children in Dubai.

Its really really unfortunate but when she first started with me 2 years ago she asked for this month off in particular for her daughters graduation, so when i fell pregnant (unplanned!) and worked out my dur date i panicked! She is so good at what she does that I really couldnt change her dates....she would be so upset! I keep thinking its only one month but i think it will be torture! Ill contact Howdra at least someone to keep this place clean and my maid can train her before. Any other recommendations would be great :) I think I'd be tempted to fly her our just for the graduation and get her back asap and give her another holiday when you are away so it won't impact you so much. Why don't you ask her. She may well surprise you and be very happy to pop back for a short stay and then get another opportunity to go back later. Saves on paying out for an agency maid - would probably work out cheaper to get another airfare.

Can your housemaid not delay her holiday - if you are going away in the summer perhaps it would be better for you for her to go on her vacation then. I would think that having her in the house to help when you are back from the hospital after having the baby is the time when you would need her the most. As having someone elses housemaid in to help you for cash in hand is illegal I would book a maid to come in from an agency - that way you are within the law. I would speak to the agency and explain the situation and perhaps have the girl come in a couple of times when your housemaid is there so your hoursemaid can run through how your house works before she leaves for vacation (if she cannot change her dates) then you can be in hospital knowing that the agency girl knows where everything is. I found Howdra to be very easy to deal with - girls spoke good english and they were well trained. Good luck but see if your housemaid can be flexible - if she can change then have her help you and perhaps give her a special bonus. it will make your life sooooooo much easier knowing she is there.

I mean I already spoke to them and left my contact number, I always see differents secumen there so wonder if I have to ask them to sign a paper confirming they keep it. I would think if you've left your contact details it's enough.

He can't just increase your rent. You have a years contract and he has to honor all the time left on your contract at exactly the same rent and number of cheques. If you only moved into the villa last year then it's highly unlikely that your rent is way below the market rent - so check the Rera rent table and if you are paying market rate he can't increase your rent after your first year either. Don't let him bully you - speak to the rent committee if he won't back down but bottom line is - no he can't increase your rent. good luck!

For Indian cooking classes I would highly recommend Abeda at Spice and Aroma. she's fabulous and very passionate about food. You will also, as an added benefit, learn how to use herbs and spices in medicinal ways too. Call her - she's fab. For Lebanese cooking classes I went to Gina - she's great too! You can get her info on facebook - Gina's Culinary Delights We are so lucky to be able to learn from such talented ladies in dubai. I also did Thai cooking classes with Abeda at Siamin restaurant and also classes with Juree. there's a Vietnamese lady who teaches vietnamese cooking - something I didn't get to do - I thnk her name is Lan - someone else on here will have her details I'm sure. Make the most of your time in Dubai and learn some fabulous dishes! Enjoy!

He used to be really funny - but last time I listed there was too just too much going on in the room and it wasn't funny anymore. How sad am I? I really miss CB and GB - so much so that my husband downloads their podcasts and I listen to them in the car on the school run - just like I did when I was in Dubai!!!!!! LOL !!! you can also listen to them on the internet anytime... I was just loving being back in the UK with Johnny Vaughan on the radio and within a couple of months he left........I still can't find a station that makes me chuckle in the mornings like CB and GB do so am enjoying catching up with them! what channel was Johnny Vaughan on ? we like Chris Evans on Radio 2 - listen here quite often... Virgin or capital I think - can't remember but he was absolutely hilarious - there were mornings when I had tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks - the best way to start your day.
