My Ipad's got facetime on it.. and I did buy it locally...however, I don't know if it makes a difference with regards to facetime; but I bought mine online, before the "official" release of the ipad in the UAE, so, clairehdp, you may well be right with regards to facetime and the 'official' ipdas...emily; I think in terms of price, (and maybe even functionality) online through a local website may be best... I am 100% right! That's why I put the warning on here. The UAE released version of the ipad2 has no FaceTime. You have an imported one. There are both now in the stores here so if people want facetime they need to be careful and check where they have come from. They won't readily tell you it has no FaceTime. edited by Clairehdp on 06/05/2011

I want to bring my maid whom I sponsor back with me to the UK for July and part of August. She is Sri Lankan. Does anyone have any experience of doing that and what's involved in terms of visa's for the UK. My understanding she can't just enter on a tourist visa and she would need to enter as a foreign domestic worker which is more complex. Any advice appreciated. It's 'visas' not 'visa's'. Jeez Sausage - that's not helpful...... you got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?

Is it a rewnewal? If so I've done it a couple of times on line. they don't give you a new card. If you check the number you will see that on the system it gives you the new date. I always just print off the page confirming it has been renewed and keep that with the health card just in case of any problems. I've never done a new card on line only renewals so not sure if this is different.

I. I only know this because my DH has 3 bites at the cherry and invariably remains hungry ;) Care to expand on that statement???? LOL LOL Jane put all 3 dates in his diary with a reminder set for a few days before each one !!!!!! If he forgets the first 2 I'd set reminders every 5 minutes for the 3rd one - drive him mad and you might get a card!!!!!!

If you want something really really nice and special then you need to get your DH to take you to Reflets par Pierre Gagnaire at the Intercontinental - Michelin starred restaurant - expensive! How about Rare at Desert Palm just up from the Dragonmart - fab restaurant - excellent steaks.

It's sad isn't it. My housemaid's sister is here and so is her husband and they have to live in seperate quarters....... I remember when the law changed a few years ago and quite a few families had to ask the husbands to move out - very hard and a law that seems really unfair.

All I can tell you is that I had 5 friends who all worked in real estate - earnt great money and worked really hard. None of them are in real estate now - they said they had to work just as hard and their earnings fell like a stone. Not the best job to be in here as a new person.......those that are doing well are those who have been in real estate for a long time and can take the ups and the downs.

How awful and how sad. None of us expect to lose a child and when it happens it's the worst pain a mother can experience. When the person takes thier own life and there is no note it must be such a confusing time. Everyone will want answers and they can't get them. Your friend will need you in any way you can be there for her. A phone call early morning to see how she is - calls at all different times just to let her know you are thinking about her. there will be days when she won't want to talk and you'll know that from her voice. Continue to be in touch and send her the photos she wants. Maybe do a selection to a favourite piece of music - she may find comfort in her quiet times to sit and look at this. I don't envy you - but you sound like your a strong friend and as hard as it will be for you too - you will know when to chat and when to just let her be quiet knowing you are there for her.

Personally, my feeling is that if you'll be out of pocket don't come. Dubai is great but it's certainly not worth losing money over. If you can work out a feasible package then great, otherwise stay where you are. If you come and it doesn't work out then debt will complicate the process of going back or going elsewhere. Good luck with getting proper answers (and hopefully getting a decent package!) I would agree completely.

Sometimes when things don't come together it's for a reason........poor you they have been messing you guys around or so long now. Is your dh already here doing the job? If he is I think I'd come over myself grab the bull by the horns and put the whole thing together myself. Go back with your proposal and if they don't go with it......don't come. You have so much more patience than most I would have thrown my toys out the pram many weeks ago. Your poor dh how can he do his job with all this uncertainty hanging over him. Good luck it will be good to have you over here!

i didnt want to make it sound like ''comparing his wife to his dead mother" and all that but yes i dont find her prettier .... yes they have had a long courtship and yes hopefully its going to be a perfect fairytale ending .... but i was just talking about the looks .... i read about this poll where apparently she came third alongwith grace kelly as first and princess rania of jordan as 2nd and Diana was forth .... and hence my comment .... i really liked princess Diana and that's all I really like the late Princess Diana too. Everytime I look at Camilla and think of Princess Diana, all I could say is that love is indeed blind. I really like Kate Middleton. She seems like a very simple and yet regal woman. I think Princess Diana would approve of her. I hope she would not change now that she is finally married to her Prince. I don't think love is blind at all.....at the end of the day Camilla and Charles loved each other very much - you can see now how much they loved each other - Diana provided an heir and a spare....... charles continued to see Camilla through his marriage to the young Diana. I loved the whole royal wedding yesterday - Kate Middleton looked serene, in control, sure of her decision - she didn't fluff her lines like Diana did - I hope and believe that this is a marriage to last. good luck to them both and may they live a happy and fulfulling married life with no outside distractions!

I think June/July is always better than August. Most people who leave Dubai leave when the schools finish so a whole load of villas become available. those moving to Dubai usually come in august for September school starts and that's when it's busy for villas. I think you would have more choice in June/July

Im in a slightly different situation and would like to know if anyone has faced a similar dilemma. Our landlord is selling the property and the new owners have told us that they want to move in. Our rent is valid till September and the new landlord wants to move in once our contract is over. We are very happy in our current villa and prefer not to move. Does anyone know if the 12 month notice applies in our situation too? How long have you been in this property? Is this your first year renewal???? A similar thing happened to us last year we had only been in the villa for a year and our LL served us notice as he wanted to sell the property. The rent committee told us that he had to give us 12 months notice - he was free to sell the property but with us as tenants. So we got to stay for a further year. He now has a buyer but we have had our 12 months notice period so we will be moving out at the end of our tenancy contract. If you have only been in the property for a year then you should be allowed to stay and the new owners will have to give you 12 months notice to leave.......it's a hard one - because you want to stay but the new owners want to move in - to be honest often the buyers don't actually want to move in they re-rent - if they really wanted to move in it might have been better for them to have bought an empty place......you might find that they offer you some compensation to leave.....

OK, lets just hope now that he is in agreement that there can be no rent increase. Last email he sent he said that they had to insist on the 20% as per RERA. But hopefully he now understands how that bit works.... wait and see I guess. Yeah not worth worrying about your case is water tight......he'll come to realise that soon enough and if he doesn't he'll end up in the rent committee court room and will have to pay from your annual rent cheque!

Hello again bmap! If I were you I'd knock that relo consultant on the head and do it all yourself. For what the company pay the relo person you could probably ship your beloved items. with kids I think it's important to bring over certain things from your home to make your new place more homely. what would happen to your things back at home - would you have to put them in storeage - who would pay for them. Furnished villas are few and far between and often the furnishings are not what you would choose for your own place. For the areas you are looking at the norm is unfurnished....... We are in Arabian Ranches and the new flyover has opened by Al Barsha which makes the journey to Internet city around 15 minutes now so a great option too.

Learning as I go here, so we have the number of cheques under control, getting there with the increase, but he has said that the next contract will state Non-Renewable. I am assuming that he can do that, but does he have to state Non-Renewable and a reason or can he just leave it at Non-Renewable? Don't want to get caught signing something that we don't have to.... thanx Right - so sounds to me like someone has had a word in his ear and told him exactly what the law is....... By putting non-renewable in your new contract he is effectively giving you a years notice. so....you get one more year at the same rent and the same number of cheques and he gets his villa back in a years time. Fair to all - he probably isn't going to move in but at least you get to stay for one more year. In another year there will be tons and tons of villas on the market for you to choose from. He doesn't have to put a reason - if I were him I would put a reason (especially if he wants to move in and does move in). You are openly signing a non-renewable lease now so you know you can stay for just one year but.........as HAK says - come notice time - if the market has dropped further and he realises that getting new tenants might not be easy he may well come to you and offer for you to renew again.......Up to you then if you renew or move. Just make sure that you sick to the 90 days notice period.
