We use them all the time and have only had good drivers too. Is the whole company gone or just the department that lost the Emirates contract? The way I read it was that they are getting rid of the employees they hired to work on the Emirates contract. I could be wrong though. Shame if it's gone it was a really handy service. Yeah just reread and it doesn't say the company is closing just dealing with the hires from the airline contract.

We have only ever had good drivers from there. It's a great service sad to see it end but the company must look after their staff better. Our cab driver the other day was telling us some pretty awful things about the life and times of a Dubai taxi driver - seems they are all as bad as each other - no wonder there are so many accidents on the roads these guys are exhausted and need more time off 12/14 hour shifts 7 days a week ........it's cruel

One of my best mates lived in Poole until this year and has children at primary school there and at nursery. I am off to UK so will ask her for her input and let you know.....it will be from last year as she's now moved back nearer to where we have our house. She won't beat about the bush and will let me know what's best. I stayed there for a few days last summer and it was lovely to walk around and go on the beach - there were some really nice play parks there too for the kids......

I know it's a pain but just nip out to the little spinneys at motor city. by the time you find someone to deliver it you will have got it yourself! Earlybird deliver milk but it's not the fresh milk it's the tetra packed milk earlybird.ae - they are excellent I use them for my water and all heavy bottled and canned drinks.

Wow ! Claire that sounds fab re the service center! Thanks for the info! It really is - it makes such a difference - my husband has a Land Rover and they take it for a whole day to service!!!! There's even a little waiting room there with a drinks machine, water and a vending snack machine - and newpapers and a tv and if the kids come with you they can watch the car being serviced from the viewing gallery - seriously - after having a Toyota/Lexus here I would not have a different car. Plus I think their air con is the best over all the other cars I've been in over here.

Thanks, all. Clairehdp, which model do you have in your lounge? It's a model they are not doing any more - I know that because I was going to buy some new covers (you can buy extra covers for their sofas really cheaply too) but the guy told me that the model has been discontinued....but there are similar looking ones in their range

Prado driver here and I LOVE it. Fantastic air con, love the cooler box for lovely cold drinks - very easy service centre - done in an hour which gives me enough time to drop off and pop into Oasis centre for a look around and a coffee! I don't think you can beat a Prado for value for money and reliability.

we have 2 different types from Ikea and the ones in our lounge people always comment on how comfy they are and nearly fall off when they hear they are from Ikea!!! All the covers are washed regularly and they come up like new - great value and great sofas. I think it's worth paying for better ones rather than their base models. We have had ours for 5 years and they are like new! edited by Clairehdp on 02/04/2011

Cadre in Satwa. Speak to Karen - 04 3455 122 Take the Al Wasl Road all the waydown to the Iranian hospital. At the Iranian hospital take a right at traffic lights signposted Satwa. About 100-150 metres along that road, take the first left hand turn and Le Cadre is immediately on your left hand side. right opposite the West Zone supermarket.

Thanks for the great ideas! I haven't heard of mini monsters though - what/where is it? it's a relatively new indoor play facility on SZR - not far from the Dubai Garden centre I think. It's pretty good and you can sit and have a coffee while the kids play but I didn't like that it was right on the road and when I was there it was pretty open - hopefully they have a gate that stops kids going out to the reception and main door.

We have a 5 mo bub and a fab part time cleaner who has been with us for 6 months and is great with him, though her english is almost non-existent. In the past we have considered leaving her with the baby on outings but have always decided against it for the fear something could happen. Lately we asked the cleaner for a copy of her visa/ passport as security should we plan to go out and as i planned to go to work 1 day a week...but she came back that she could provide her sister's details as her sponsor won't allow it. I am aware of the legal implications of this and it all just sounds a bit suspect so we have arranged an agency babysitter for this weekend. Any advice on other avenues for part time babysitting? I have read through all old posts and it seems like this is definitely a common story among expats away from extended family networks. TIA for any suggestions....also the agency we are using is homemaidsuae....any feedback? If you are aware of the legal implications I'm not really sure why you are even considering leaving your child with her - do you know that you are running the risk of a huge fine - i think it's gone up to 100K Dhs not just you but also her sponsor.

So Easter Sunday is 24th April this year right? For us Easter Sunday normally goes something like this: kids wake early excited by what Easter Bunny has left for them, they get even more excited by the bunny footprints and fluff easter bunny has left. We have a lazy Sunday morning breakfast while the kids eat a lot of chocolate and then we head out for a family day, picnic, park, bike ride or something like that. This is our first Easter in Dubai and since Sunday is a school day here I was wondering what families tend to do on Easter Sunday? TIA We have a lovely family day and meet up with friends and do egg hunts with the kids and make easter bonnets etc and we get a turkey take out (like at Xmas). Our school has the Easter Sunday off so we are doing the same again this year only at friends on the Palm so we will be on the beach too!

I noticed the other day that prices in Arabian Ranches have gone up. I asked the House Hunters lady why and she said that there are far fewer people leaving and more competition for the houses that are available. Thats rubbish - talking to a shipping agent he said he is doing 4 containers a week leaving and 1 a week coming in that's funny you say that Pepps because I see people moving on AR every day at the moment and lots of containers too...... thought it was an odd statement based on what I am seeing there..... mmm don t know claire thats what he said I don t think he would have reason no tot be honest but who knows ! Sorry not clear Pepps - I'm agreeing with you as I'm seeing lots of movement off AR at the moment - quite a few people have relocated to The Villa as it's far cheaper there and lovely - and I've seen lots of containers in the last few weeks so I'm agreeing with you and not with the HH person!

oh, and SOME hotels will try and charge you for the extra bed, or cot for baby when you get there...just when you book make sure that it's for the 4 of you, particularly when doing so online and you'll be fine. sorry, but why shouldn't they ? we have never been charged for a child's bed and I would be furious if they tried to Me either and me too! And usually, I ask them to set up a cot in the room too. Most of the nicer hotels have baby cots that they let guests use for free. If we have booked, pre paid on line for the 3 of us for 3 beds and 3 breakfasts, then arriving at the said hotel to find not only no bed set up waiting and them trying to charge you extra for it is not on, particularly at the 'nicer' hotels. It's what we've already paid for, no? No you're right - if you hve booked for 3 with 3 beds and 3 breakfasts you are absolutely right to refuse to pay. surely that's when you produce your confirmation and all is sorted. When booking for more than 2 kids you will find extra charges with certain hotels - it is clear and it shouldn't be a surprise as the booking can't be made without adding in the extras anyway.

But.....it will be on their terms and conditions - we just book the 1 bed as our little girl likes to sleep in hotel wardrobes!!!!!!!! and I promise you I am not kidding!!!!!!! She spends ages building herself a little nest like arrangement with cushions and towels and will NOT sleep in a hotel bed!!!!!! It's the funniest thing I've ever seen and the look on housekeeping when I have to explain that they must not touch the nest in the wardrobe is superb! I dread the day she grows up and decides that a bed in a hotel is fine...!!!!!

melbell - you say you've set up an aramex account but..... i think Edna means an Aramex Shop and Ship account - not a regular courier accoutn with Aramex. Edna am I correct. It used to be that when setting up a shop and ship account it would take a few days to set up and they delivered the joining pack to your home in dubai.....sounds to me like you have just opened a regular courier account and this does not give you your shopping address in the UK and US....... Sounds like you are not in dubai at the moment - if you are travelling in from EU see if you can buy it from the airport shops - that's what I am planning on doing......

It might even work out cheaper to book a few rooms at Atlantis as they have some special offers on which include swimming with the dolphins. You would then be able to chill out at the pool, on the beach, at Aquaventure, etc etc..... worth checking out. Definitely book a lovely afternoon tea all together - either Burj Al Arab in the Sky View Bar and do the latest booking so you are still there for sunset. Or....the One and Only afternoon tea is super and much cheaper than BAA. Burj Khalifa - again do around 5 and then you will be at the top for the start of the fountains too. Dinner at rivington Grill/Mango Tree/meat company. Evening at the Buddah Bar is always great. If they are here for a Friday do the Al Qasr brunch or the Bubbalicious brunch at the Westin - always fantastic. dinner on the Palm one evening - West 14th is one of my favourite places at the moment. Cocktails at Shimmers are Mina A Salaam is lovely Dinner at Teatro is also really good (vouchers in entertainer) When my girlfriends came over we put champagne in the fridge and booked some treatments and mani and pedis at home for their first evening as they were tired from the travelling - it was so much fun. Cocktails and dinner at Atmosphere highest restaurant Oooooh so much to cram in - you can book a morning desert safari with camel rides I think we used Desert Rangers for this - it was lovely as it was just our group and was much nicer than being at a big busy camp.

Great news! I am so happy to hear Guinness is home! Why did the Emaar security at M7 not call you (if it was them who found him)? I can't understand that, they called Dubai Municipality and not the owner. If anyone has any contacts within Emaar maybe we could find out the policy of security re lost/found pets and get it reviewed? Completely agree CP it's madness that this family went through all those days when the security should just phone the number on the collar.....

Depends on traffic, but you're throwing in a couple of extra round abouts which get clogged during rush hours, so I reckon an extra 20/30 mins journey. ???? 30 mins - blimey chocs - which way are you going???? quickest way in the morning (or it was when I used to go that way) is on the Dubai bypass road 611. Following that route brings you out by Jafza so a good 10 mins down szr from the Marina so all in I would say AR would add an extra 5/10 mins on the journey. I've heard though that it can take a while just to get out of the marina - from AR it's pretty easy to get out and you're straight onto either Emirates Road or the 611. Hope that helps your case Meals!

Am guessing that they are not calling anymore as am assuming that a lot of the dogs are abandoned..... and having spent lots of time tracking down previous owners who have left the country, they are no longer spending time doing it.... sad really. It's really sad. If they'd called Guinness the day dog Guinness came in he could have been back at home so much quicker...... I'm shocked as this was not what they told me when I went there the other month. They assured me that if an animal comes in and is clearly well looked after that they check the chip and make the call.....hmmmmmmmm - clearly not!
