We love the Saturday Family Brunch at Mazina in The Address Dubai Marina. Aside from the food being awesome they have a big bouncy castle, balloon bending, face painting, colouring tables, various toys, a wii + some really marvellous staff who totally take care of them if you fancy having some adult conversation. We keep going back because it recharges our adult batteries as well as makes the kids sleep well that night. I agree - really nice brunch and the kids have a lovely time. also love Beachcombers at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel - best setting - right on the beach sitting on the terrace with some of the best views of teh Burj al arab and the kids room is nice and the staff are lovely there. Bubbalicious is superb too

No you can't send to the UK. The max you can carry over yourself is 200 per person.

My Life in UK (now) I live in the UK I am sitting in the garden on my laptop without a jacket, the snowdrops and daffodils are out the birds are singing, glorious blue skies and lovely fresh air. I’ve just done my Tesco shopping online (no schlepping to spinneys) I’m just about to get in my car to tale a leisurely (safe)drive through beautiful countryside to pick my children up from their fantastic schools. At school most of the parents will smile, wave or say hello. The kids will run out and tell me what amazing things they’ve done at school. I will go home cook my lovely fresh food I brought from the farm shop, DH will come home in time to have dinner with the kids then we will sit down to watch some great British entertainment on TV. At the weekend we are spoilt for choice we do something different every weekend, I think we are taking the kids to a spy centre, last weekend my children took part in a charity fashion show. My life in Dubai Wake up at unearthly hour to drive on a never-ending **** hole road (Emirates) to take the children to a school that took out any shred of confidence and uniqueness out of them. Nobody wanted to talk or say hello (unless they wanted something) came home sat on EW all day as there is only so many coffee mornings you can attend, spent most of the day indoors hiding from the sun (even in March) picked up the kids, ate **** imported food, put the kids to bed without them seeing their Dad (he was always working) sat on EW most nights as the TV was diabolical. Spent every weekend at the beach or in a mall again hiding from the sun. blimey !! well, if you felt like that then i'm sure Dubai WAS pergatory for you... your UK life - the only thing i can see is the Tesco delivery..everything else i have here lol.. i too can sit in the garden with my morning coffee watching all the different birds.. and you may feel your car journey is safer but how much more does it cost you ?? (not just the price of fuel but the general running costs of the vehicle).. at school everyone smiles at us and my son is always full of the activities - last week went to the theatre, they have been up the Burj, Safa park, had an author to visit and sign his book...all things we never had in the UK..not to mention the school's own swimming pool (how many uk schools have one ?).. no complaints about the food we buy and the fresh produce is fabulous - fruits from all sorts of places i've never seen before...and our tv is exactly what we watch at home (in fact, because we use a slingbox our tv IS from home lol) though i will admit to the time difference being a pain sometimes.. Weekends we go to Al Ain zoo, Abra across the creek and a walk through the souks, the wind tunnel to practice sky diving (in the uk it's several hours' drive away)...but more often than not we have a lazy time around the house, just going to the pool, playing in the garden, watching tv and doing homework... Dubai life ? yes i will admit getting up at 5.30 is just barbaric lol (but i AM home again before 8 :))..but i enjoy the drive to school and love driving my pajero which i would never have had at home.. plenty to do all day in the house or having fun locating another landmark.. don't bother with the malls unless i have to but i really can't understand anyone saying there isn't plenty to do here.. my husband's been to his first ever grand prix, rugby sevens, beer festival, skydiving championships, ben10 live show (lol),my teen went to Usher's gig,he's been camping in the desert with school, too many things to remember.. I'm sorry for anyone who doesn't enjoy their time here - if we ever weren't happy here then we would go home. And of course the people who have gone home are going to big it up - human nature, just the same as those still here are raving about it !! But can honestly say that apart from friends and family there isn't a single thing i miss...so far !!! lol How refreshing! I feel exactly the same

Hey, Claire, are you living as a Central Londoner? I've a feeling that there's a huge difference between us - I left Central London 20 years ago as a single person in a good job and would return as part of a 3 person family with no job between us. I left before there was the need for private insurance and when state schooling and the NHS weren't subject to the postcode lottery. Times have changed massively since then in my particular part of the world. My husband has also been subject to racism in the UK, which he has not suffered from here. Another thing to take into account. I think we have lots of similarities simpleas. I worked in Central London (West End girl) for many years and 20 years ago the company I worked for gave us all private insurance. can't comment on schooling as had my kids late in life and they have only ever been at school here in Dubai but all my friends (and my sisters) in the UK have their kids at all different schools state and private and all the kids I know are doing well. both my kids were born in the local NHS hospital and I had superb care - couldn't fault it and it didn't cost us a penny. we live a very easy commutable distance to London and so benefit from being in a country environment but easy access for a night out in London - best of both worlds. Sad to hear about racism - cant comment on that as never ever experienced that. Out of interest/curiousity - why did you choose to return to the UK with no job and a family in tow and where were you coming from? you don;t have to answer here we can chat about it next week....

Good grief, come back down to earth, folks! The UK is only great to live in if you're filthy rich and can afford the same privileged lifestyle as is on offer here - private health insurance and private schools being only two things which spring to mind. If you're bog average trying to earn a living with a good education and experience behind you, Dubai is a far better bet. Neither my husband nor I could find the equivalent of what we have here, in the UK. We'd own a one-bed flat in Clarm and be on the dole. What choice? edited by simpleasabc on 15/03/2011 Can't agree with you there Simpleas - we are certainly not filthy rich but have a lovely lifestyle (not dissimilar to the one here) in the UK in the summers when we go back to escape the nightmare heat here in Dubai. Our friends all work hard but also play hard - again very similar to our friends here - it's just absolutely lovely for us not paying tax...... but we have private health care and in the UK we wouldn't necessarily have to pay school fees. We don't own here in Dubai we rent but we own properties outside of Dubai...... so many people are lucky and do have a choice and for us - we have chosen Dubai but it doesn't mean that the UK sucks.....

Thanks Claire. Will apply and keep you all posted just so we have an up to date benchmark. Would be interested to know how you get on as we might well do that with ours this summer as she doesn't seem to want to go back home this year and thinks she might prefer to take the money......so maybe it would be good for her to see the UK with us..... I take it that she's been with you for longer than 12 months then.... Claire, seriously taking your maid to the UK??? Come on don't turn into a Dubai expat! She can stay and cat sit or dog sit for someone and earn a few bob on the side. Nooooooo not from a dubai expat thing - I'd like to show her London and where we come from etc - she's been with us for quite a while now and just thinking this evening that it might be a nice thing to do for her - only if she chooses not to go home for the summer......

a really good friend of mine did it last summer and it was fine (but her housemaid had been working for her for over 12 full months) If your housemaid has not been on your sponsorship for at least a year then it's not even worth completing the forms. I know another family here who completed the paperwork and their housemaid had been with them for almost 2 years but they were turned down......never found out why.....

To the OP, why do you persist in this topic time and time again. This must the 3rd or 4th time that you've put up a thread comparing Dubai to the UK. Each time the responses have been pretty much the same - almost everyone ends up slating Dubai. Why do you do this? The Dubai bashing is endless.... You are comparing a developing, Islamic city in a desert to a secular, developed country. The comparison is unfair. I understand you are having a tough time making up your mind, but please understand that the ease, that people's lifestyle here affords, cannot be replicated back in any developed country without serious amounts of money. I don't see that it has to be a Dubai bashing thread at all - poor Jwal is clearly having a hard time making up her mind as to what to do and needs everyone's views to help her.

I have a very similar time to you when I go back to the UK as we are very lucky and have kept our house there - but......at the moment we still love being here in Dubai - we have a lovely circle of friends from all walks of life, the kids are happy - we love Christmas here with turkey take out in the garden with friends, the only difference is that I do my on line shop at Sainsburys!! There is good and bad in all places and we are very lucky to have a choice - at this moment we are choosing to be in Dubai over the UK. I think reading your take on the life you had in Dubai shows that of course you will be much happier in the UK. I wish I'd known at the time when you were here just how unhappy you were..... I hear the weather has perked up and we are looking forward to seeing all the spring flowers when we are over for a little break at term end next month.

Jwal - interesting question.... On your cons for the UK - you can get companies like Molly Maids. I have a lady who comes in to help clean the house and another who pick up my ironing for me and brings back - so those services are there - you just have to find those little gems! You put the winter but.....it's easier to keep warm and wrap up and put your wellies on and hide under your brolly there than it is to try and get cool in the heat of Dubai! This was pointed out to me by a friend who left Dubai and is now in the UK - I see what she means......

Magpie is not correct about hiring and sponsoring. You CAM hire a part timer through a maid agency and you DON'T have to sponsor her. If you want a full timer you hve to sponsor and pay for their live out accommodation. You cannot hire a part timer direct without sponsoring though. Please be aware that the fines are big if you hire illegally.

I kept it in the fridge so it was lovely and cold on their spots when they all came out - we breezed through chicken pox but the lead up was not great.

Can you contact the big car hire companies who are based at teh airport you fly into and see if you can just hire a car seat from them to go into the hotel transport. Most of the big companies, Avis and Hertz all hire child car seats maybe they would be happy to rent the seat on its own - worth a try.....

JS, this isnt a knock at you, but come on your reaching 30. You have you life ahead of you, its not great hardship, life is for living, dont beat yourself up just because your not twenty something anymore. I lost a friend last year he was 26 years old, Im so sure his last wish would of been to reach his next birthday. Enjoy life, age doesnt matter its how you feel and hopefully you are living a happy one. I received this email yesterday, really made me think!!!! hope you like it. The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.. She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?' I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze.. 'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked. She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...' 'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. 'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium.. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.' As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ' We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody! Can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets..' She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.' She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE. REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. We make a Living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give.. Wow - I love that - thanks for sharing

We have been to the Hilton Arcadia and it was lovely - very child friendly and the kids club was lovely. Kids were extremely well catered for and did lots of beautiful art based projects. the girls in the kids club were lovely and there was a lovely play area too. It was a couple of years ago but we loved it. Friend is going to Holiday Inn in a few weeks and that sounds nice - very family orientated. Another one that was recommended to me by a friend who stayed there was the Movenpick - she sent me photos and it looked amazing. We ended up booking the Hilton and we were very well looked after and had a super holiday there.

Hi - we lived there for 3 years when it was first handed over so everyone that moved in moved in at the same time and there was a superb community and everything was new and very well maintained - Nakheel was also on a high...... Yes the community has finally opened and I'm meeting friends there this week so I can tell you what it's like after that. There are still big problems with the lakes - we never had a mosquitoe problem but I know many clusters there did and a friend who is still there says she still struggles with the mozzies. When I go there now you can see that it's not being maintained like it used to be and it looks overgrown but it's still a very nice place to live. the construction works each side are awful though. How sad that to get into such a lovely place is so awful the terrible roadworks around JLT on one side and then the awful roads still, after 3 years around the Meadows and the Springs. We moved to Arabian Ranches and it's beautifully maintained, has a much, much nicer community spirit and is easily accessible. since moving here we see far more of Dubai as we seem to be 20 minutes from all areas so far more convenient than being that end of town. Closest nursery would be Jebel Ali Nursery in the Hayya Club in Springs and the nursery by Spinneys town centre (can't remember the name of it). I was in Jumeirah Islands last week and I really did feel far away compared to where we are now. Do your homework on JI though as some of the villas were being used as party villas a while ago and not sure if that's still happening - speak to neighbours if you can to get a feel for the community. Other really lovely communities are Victory Heights - I know lots of people living there with young children and they seem to really love being there - the villas are beautiful. the villa - the villas there are lovely and a nice community spirit as people are all moving in at the same time - it's being landscaped at the moment and every time I go there it gets nicer and nicer. Hope that helps you.....

Never. DH says we are a family and holiday as a family. That's nice but......oh my God - I would absolutely LOVE for my 2 to be able to spend 3, 4 or 5 nights with their grandparents - how special that would be.....and how amazing to be able to take a holiday without them! I used to spend a big chunk of my summer holidays when I was little with my grandparents and I absolutely LOVED it! I still remember the special times we had together. Frenchy - put away those feelings of guilt - you are giving your children some amazing quality time with their grandparents who will treasure them and enjoy every minute. You are very very lucky and I would be in that car with my bag packed without a moments hesitation. 5 days on my own with my husband - Oh My God!!!!! It will be good for all of you - everyone wins - you get some me time, your husband gets to spend time with his wife - not mummy to the kids, your kids get to be pampered and adored by their grandparents and your parents in law will have some very special time with their grandchildren with the added bonus that your housemaid can help them with the extra work. Lucky lucky lucky you - get that break booked and don't feel guilty at all......

What is she employed as? A domestic workers contract is almost always 1or2years so if she has a 3GS contract that to me is suspicious.why does the guy have her passport? Again very suspicious. As nice as she is you could be walking into a big problem. If u can wait until June I would. You can check her visa status and herb passport and take it from there.....

If you're not willing to sponsor her then it's illegal. There was a change in the law though where you could let your housemaid work for someone else if you were away but it was or a big chunk of time - like 2/3 months it was like a temporary sponsorship. I never looked into it as it was of no interest to us. I think it came out 2/3years ago -maybe this could help the op do this legally without going through an agency but hen she needs to find someone who doesn't need their housemaid for those months and that's going to be he tricky part.

Has she been working for you for long? Is this out of character. Has she told you why she needs the money. I have given a couple of advances but always have good reasons. If she's only been paid last week seems a bit eary to have an advance I think you need to have a chat with her..... If she's relatively new and has started early on asking then I would re-set the rules and clarify exactly when pay day is.

It's definitely suspicious if you can't speak to a dr - sounds like it's not true but......if you are not happy with her anyway and have already decided not to renew so you would be sending her home anyway - and as there is tension in the house I would put her on a flight out of here with a ban. that way - if the story is true she will be able to be there for her new grandson and for her daughter and gets what she wants but......if it's not true it serves her right for lying and making up a story.....she will be at home with no job to come back to. At least you don't have to know if it's true or not......you can feel content that she's out of your home......
