Can we help search? I would be happy to meet at choitrums and walk the streets. Is anyone organising a complete house to house search of the area. He might have wandered into another villa and the gate close and lock him in the garden. Poor little man.

I would recommend that you also look at the villas in The Villa development as they are being released onto the Market now and seem to be ver popular with excellent value for your dirhams. There's also a new gems school opening on silicon oasis that would be worth checking out and Repton school is an easy drive from there. The Villa is on the emirates road so a very easy commute to airport free zone. If the kids are coming with you try a trip to Childrens city in creek park as there is a lot to learn about the locality there in a fun way. A few hours on the beach, big bus tour, Dubai museum, modify city centre is a newly opened mall that has some great things for kids to do play nation, Aquaplay, iflydubai. It will probably be where you do your shopping so worth checking out and there are some nice restaurants there too ( no alcohol served though!) Good luck it's a great place to live for a 7 and 5 year ok. Mine are 6 and 7 and have so much fun here.

At the end of last year the fine increased to 100k but......as of last week in an article in gulf news there was a new development stating that expats can take on part time work but to be honest I'd not want to test the new using and risk a big fine. Not seen anything more about it. yeh there is a new law as of jan 1st but nobody really knows what it all means just yet, in the process of changing visas and going through all the red tape yet again.......! even the pro's dont have a clue its all too new. Yeah I read it and it was a clear as mud definitely open to interpretation if you get to the bottom of it do let us know!!!

If you are looking for a nanny as opposed to a housemaid then 1800 is not much at all. Trained nannies are hard to find here and will expect a much bigger salary. Sounds to me like you are interviewing housemaids.

There's a restaurant called Shimmers I think that may be the same concept! Shimmers is a lovely location but the menu has changed and it's very ordinary - I wouldn't say that romantic - great location with the palm trees all lit up but not for something special. I don't think you can beat the majlis al bahar at the Burj Al Arab when they lay out the tables on the beach - it's very romantic and that best view ever of the Burj AA and not too OTT price wise if it's a very special occasion! http://www.jumeirah.com/en/Hotels-and-Resorts/Destinations/Dubai/Burj-Al-Arab/Restaurants-And-Nightlife/Majlis-Al-Bahar/

Is there only one clinic in Satwa? If so I don't know the name of it but it's by the bus stop behind the car park where Dream Girl is, if that makes sense! I think it opens at 8am. DC - my writer friend was over this week (she left today) and we were talking about you - hope you are OK. I'm sure there's only 1 clinic there and it's the same one that you mention!

Not being funny but I think it's called the Satwa Clinic!!!!!!! If you park inthe car park between the mosque and the post office walk up (away from the mosque heading past the post office) and the clinic is just past the post office.

La Verandah at the jumeirah beach hotel is a reasonably priced pizzeria type restaurant on the beach with awesome views of the burj al arab. Definitely a good one to take guests to. If you are having lots of guests over it's definitely worth investing in the entertainer books - you get 3 vouchers for each place and most are buy one main course and get one free. More Cafe in Dubai Mall is very reasonable and has a good view of the fountains. There are some nice restaurants in the marina too that have great views of the boats in the marina and the fountains there too.

I always highly recommend them. I agree with Oreo - their face painters are out of this world! Best I've ever seen. they are a lovely company to deal with and I've booked them for big and small events and they've been superb. they are also flexible unlike the flying elephant guys who were not willing to change any part of their packages to suit the event - Tumble Time were very easy to deal with and have never let me down.

Firstly your maid in training should not be working for you on a vist visa - her visa status should be changed to allow her to work..... Why don't you let the other housemaid go to look for a new placement and if she doesn't find one then she leaves your employ and returns home. I believe it depends on your personal circumstances for you to sponsor 2 housemaids at the same time. for example I don't think you can if it's just you and no dependents. If you hve dependents you have a good case for sponsoring more than one staff member. Probably best to check with immigration as the rules do change so often! edited by Clairehdp on 12/01/2011

I would say to forget it and employ a new maid, and this maid should go to immigration and say she was abandoned. His deposit will pay for her repatriation I believe. If the Original sponsors visa is now cancelled due to being out UAE for more than 6 months were does that leave the maid? edited by Jumeriah Jane on 12/01/2011 In S creek. with no paddle. Your friends should abandon ship soon. I agree with SQ - they are all in the S Creek without a paddle....... I think they have to walk away and the maid has to fess up that her sponsor has not returned.......really as soon as she knew they were not returning she should have made sure she had a new sponsor did she really think it would be OK to be here on an expired visa.....oh boy what a mess for everyone....

This is for a friend; Quick outline of story; Sponsor left country in summer last year and maids visa ran out at end of sept, she is working for another family (yes i know) and they want to sponsor her but don't know how to cancel her visa from the sponsor who left. The sponsor's sponsor has not yet cancelled his visa and says wait until he has done that and then he can do the maids. Any feedback. (sound well dodgy to me) Yep - well well dodgy! If he's been out of the country for over 6 months my understanding is that yes - his visa is cancelled...... Why on earth did they not sort this out when her visa ran out - it's now a complete mess......so the sponsors visa is probably on auto cancel and hers is run out - so she's been illegal here since Sept and these people would have known that...... she will have overstay fines and, as she's been working illegally will probably have to leave - and I suppose your friends could well pick up a really big fine for employing her and continuing to employ her on an expired visa...... what a mess..... sounds like they'll all get it every which way.....

I've never seen a law about repainting but it is usual that a villa would be repainted by the LL before the arrival of new tenants. However, check your contract because some put in that the villa has to be returned in the same condition as at handover which would mean freshly painted by you if it was freshly painted.....or it says with usual wear and tear which would mean that the LL would paint it after your departure. Unfortunately because there is no law - it's open to manipulation and if a LL thinks he can get you to pay it as a way of getting your deposit back - he'll try it on.....

I found this quite interesting... Last week, synthetic phonics champion Jim Rose was knighted and materials in the scheme arrived at every primary in England, while Michael Rosen became children's laureate and denounced "the fraud of synthetic phonics". Quite a week. So who's right? Our staff were recently held captive for two days by a synthetic phonics trainer and her toy dog, Fred, who talks in phonemes ("Fredtalk"). The trainer led us into a world of literacy where English is reduced from a rich mix of cultures and history to mere units of sound, where children are kept away from confusing letter names they can't "decode". Children read not through books but by assimilating "speed sounds". They progress to banal ditties ("hot chips from the shop"). We were inducted into the moral universe of synthetic phonics and its mantras: "a child's reading age should be three years ahead of comprehension age"; "the most important words in our language cannot be got from context". Incredibly, the notion of streaming four-year-olds passed almost unnoticed, but a momentary rebellion occurred when our trainer modelled a Fredtalking teacher writing "Can I hav" without the final "e". "Should we avoid words like 'live', 'give', 'glove' and 'shove'?" I asked. "Let's pigeon-hole that discussion and come back to it," said our trainer. It's still tucked away. How I wish I'd asked Fred to spell "pigeon". I love the cosmopolitanism of English, whose melange (French) or mish-mash (Yiddish) of foreign words reveals unexpected connections. But synthetic phonics doesn't do connections or roots: it despises complications as disfiguring the language. Following the Rose report, all schools must adopt a phonics scheme. And zealots are seizing the moment. I weep at their violation of our language with their "one size fits all" approach. When school managers calculate the cost of the training and paraphernalia (friezes, magnetic letters, handbooks, software), they might weep too. My cousin, a professional comedian, tells a cruel joke about Alzheimer's. The upside, he says, is you meet new people every day. With synthetic phonics, you meet every word for the first time. All primary teachers use phonics, but as a tool, not a philosophy. We want to nurture critical readers who love literature and can adapt reading skills to the diverse structures they will meet beyond dull scheme texts. Real children use their experiences, play with language, pick up clues and think about context to read for meaning. Good teaching builds on what children already do and harmonises their efforts. Let's keep it real, not synthetic. Ooooooh very thought provoking!....

Child in reception and was told that the class will be divided by reading level into groups. Does anyone know how to determine the reading level based on the books. I suppose its not important but I'm curious to see how my LO fares against their classmates? Also, I know they say this program doesn't pigeon hole children as they can move up and down but do the children *know* what is up or down. Ie. do they know that one group is more advanced then the other for example, or one is less advanced then them? For example her book last week was Six in a bed, with short sentences. edited to remove school name as not really relevant I suppose edited by xmasbaby on 11/01/2011 edited by xmasbaby on 11/01/2011 both of mine have done ths reading programme and both have been blissfully unaware of where they are with regards to upper or lower levels - they are placed in the group according to their ability and they work in little groups - both of mine have loved that and they get to see and spend time with other children which my 2 loved. At such an early age why would you want to start comparing your child with others as there can be such a huge difference in capabilities - after all some are just 4 and others are turning 5. As long as she is enjoying her reading books and showing good progress I would be happy. As JJ says - if you really feel you need to know where she is have a word with her class teacher or for a better understanding of the programme get the head of EYs to go through it with you. I must say I have only good things to say about it as my little boy joined in year 1 with only phonics and has become a prolific reader and adores books. edited by Clairehdp on 11/01/2011

We lived there for 3 years when it was first built and there are build issues with some of the clusters but they are lovely homes and the villa we were in was fine. some do leak badly in the rain but most were worked on and the leak problem should have been resolved. I was there a few weeks ago and I thought it looked really sad as it's not being maintained as well as it was but I suppose that's because of Nakheel's financial situation. the community centre has still not opened - 5 years on!!!!! Some of the clusters close to the water experience bad mosquitoes and smells - again, we were close to water but really didn't have any issues - it just seems to be where you are located. We moved to Arabian Ranches and the build quality of the villas is far far better, the community pools are well maintained as are the communal play areas and the landscaping is beautiful. We far far prefer AR to JI. AR is also far better located. I don't go down to the JI area of town very often now and being in AR I see far more of Dubai as it's much easier to get to places from there.

Shaf - I think maybe you didn't read CPs note in the right way. I would agree completely with her - I have only 17 months between my 2 and it's really important as soon as the new baby arrives that your little one is made to feel secure and involved. I found that it was lovely to all cuddle up together in the early weeks as the newborn slept so much and I would have some really special time with my toddler. They are still so little and really do need their mummies. I am no perfect domestic goddess but I'd find a little window of time and do some homemade playdough and we'd sit and make loads of things together. I'd have a big plastic sheet down on the floor and he'd do glue and glitter things and when he was finished I'd scoop up the stuff and bin all the rubbish. I also got a black board from Ikea and loads of chalks and he'd love to colour and draw stuff. A winnie the pooh movie and reading little books together. At 19 months they really just need some fun. I'd also be a bit wary of introducing a new face to just be there for him. You've got help in the house so you need to make really good use of that so that the time you have will be with your new baby and your toddler. I'd be really happy to pop over for a couple of hours a morning a week - I love newborns and toddlers and both mine are now growing up so fast and are at school now. When is the baby due?
