Now how come when I googled it I did not find that website!!! Thanks that's exactly what I'm looking for - 3 locations!!! Do they do good artificial xmas trees? that's ideally what I'm looking for ...Thank you!!! they do superb artificial xmas trees but sell out so get there soon! they do the decorations in many of the hotels in Dubai - it's an amazing place. They had wonderful things for Royal Mirage there. Clairehdp I am not sure but I guess you haven't been this year there, I have been for the past five years and this year it was a quarter of the size as usual on xmas deco. Was so disappointed. Shame! I loved going there. I bet the Royal Mirage stuff was stunning. Maybe since they've opened more units they are downsizing in al Quoz but I used to love my afternoons there with my friends all getting our christmas decorations! Definitely won't be there this year but I've got an amazing place right opposite my kids school - I went in to buy puppy food today but had to walk through the christmas section and I'm now £94 pounds lighter - just could not resist!!!!!

When we packed our container I bought lots of arabic lamps for our garden. We had a photo shoot done in the desert and i got all the pictures put onto canvas as it's far cheaper to do that in Dubai. I also got a favourite chair covered before it went in to the container because, again, it was cheaper to have done there than in the UK. I bought lots of spices but took them in my luggage as we were not allowed any foodstuffs in the container. If you are into rugs probably best to buy some nice ones in Dubai. We also packed some prints from Gallery One to remind us of our time in dubai. I also bought some light fittings that I knew would look fab in our new house. Any trinkets that will remind you of your time in Dubai would be nice to have in your home back in Australia.

Say she is taking holiday (but working it) for the month of November. You pay her her usual salary for November plus another month in lieu of her not taking it as holiday plus the equivalent of a return flight home. My old housemaid decided to take money in lieu of holiday because they were saving really hard to build their own house. In our villa she did get down time because we would often go away and she was pretty much free to do what she wanted over the long summer break - so not taking holiday didn't mean she was exhausted as she had plenty of time to rest and relax when we were away resting and relaxing. My housemaid explained to me that she would prefer to stay and take the extra money. When she went home she would be expected to buy everyone gifts and all her money would be used up. She had her sister and lots of real cousins in Dubai so she had a really nice social time with them. They have now bought their land and, I think they are ready to start building which is fantastic. just had a lovely chat with Jenn Redlesley - she tells me she's helping do buckle up stuff! told her to say hello to you from me!!!

I used to volunteer at Sailability at the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. You don't need to know how to sail (although that does help!). You can help children with special needs learn how to do their knots, learn parts of a boat and, ultimately they learn how to sail. It was lots of fun for all concerned and to see these children when they get into the boats was worth every single minute.

we used to go to the jumeirah beach hotel or the hilton jumeirah beach to listen to the carols on christmas eve. Santa arrives at JBH with gifts for the kids. Hilton serves mulled wine and mince pies. We loved the christmas lunch at Bab Al shams - santa arrived on a camel - not just great for the kids it was pretty magical for adults eating traditional roast turkey in the desert! All the hotels have such amazing decorations it's actually really lovely going around some of them and just taking in the over the top decorations. There's usually the winter festival at the Madinat - again nice to stoll around and stop for a drink and nibble.

You just can't compare any of the Dubai schools to a highly rated independent UK school ( Dubai has some great schools but it's different..... not in a bad way at all....but just different....) but....having done it the other way around (my kids did all their schooling up to year 2 and year 4 in Dubai) they were absolutely fine going into a private school back in the UK. Does your outstaning school have contacts with schools in Dubai by any chance?

We used Airpets and Alison at the Dubai Doghouse to bring out cat over to Dubai and because the experience was so good we used the same for bringing her back! Can't remember the cost - not cheap! but I could trawl through our paper work for the costs or give you alison's contact details and she will give you a pretty accurate costing.

It depends where you choose to live but most places have access to a pool either your own or, if you choose to live on a community that has communal pools then - yes....but..... those people living on The Palm will tell you that their rights to a pool have been taken away if their landlord has not paid certain fees..... and some of the newer developments have not got their pools open yet so..... be careful...

Cinema, water parks, beach, shopping malls, indoor play areas, trips to fujeirah, you will have lots of birthday parties to go to, swimming, football, rugby, Ski Dubai, ice skating, petting farm, play dates, sleep overs, camping in the desert, Friday brunches! - all the same stuff really! although you will spend more time indoors in dubai due to the heat compared to how much time you spend outdoor in the UK (something that has really surprised me since being back in the UK).

CP when we won our case the judgement papers were not available straightaway. Because we won we were told to make our next rent cheque payable less the court fees which is what we did so our Landlord got our rent cheque minus the fees we had had to pay to file the case and at the same rental as the previous year. You have to go to the rent committee to pick up the papers (I don't think we even picked ours up) as our Landlord had to accept our rent cheque. We only ever dealt with the rent committee in english we never needed an arabic speaker. Were your friends not told when they should expect to pick up the court papers when they left the hearing?

All the hotels offer a drinks package you need to ask to speak to the food and beverage department as they are the ones who hold the menus and drink packages. Most, as BigA says, will start from 20 people but some might offer it to you if you ask for a smaller group. worth asking - it will depend on how keen they are for the business. they work out to be really good - especially if you have a big group of drinkers.

We brought out cat out from the UK to Dubai and used Alison - she was superb. We also used her to take our cat back from Dubai to UK and again she was excellent. I can't compare because we were so happy with alison that we didn't look at anyone else. She knows what she is doing. She has good contacts and can clear the animals quickly when they land in Dubai. When we were sending our cat back to the UK it was summer and she recommended we do the trip in the evening so it would be cooler for her - to be honest - with everything else that I had to organise I'm not sure I would have thought of that! She's a super person who adores animals and our cat arrived safe in Dubai through her car and left Dubai and arrived safely back into the UK. A big, big thumbs up from me.

Another option would be the Chef House at the Radisson Blu in media city. Check with them but they do a buffet starter and then come and serve you at the table for your main course which is an amazing selection of skewers of steak, chicken, fish, prawns. it was a good place to got with the drinks package and people were not up and down getting their food so it worked really well for a group outing. they also had vouchers in the entertainer book so it worked out to be a really good opton for a boozy night out!

What do they have to hide. Of course you should be able to go into the nursery with your child. You should be able to chat to his carer/teacher and see how his morning went. If I picked up my child and their nappy was hanging off them I'm not sure I would be taking them back..... As a teacher you know your feelings are right - there are some lovely caring nurseries - I would start looking again if I were you...... edited by Clairehdp on 21/11/2012

We did Bab Al Shams 2 years ago and it was absolutely magical for the kids. Santa arrived over the sandunes on a camel......now you don't get that in many places. the food was excellent. We opted to sit outside and it was beautiful. Definitely a christmas that we will never forget and the kids still talk about it. they had a lovely gazebo area with kids activities and all the children got a really nice gift from Santa. I recommended it and others booked last year and the feedback from them was that it was lovely. We are not in Dubai any more but if I was there for this Christmas it would be my place of choice.

It will depend on where you choose to live. Are you happy in an apartment? Do you need to live in a villa - how many bedrooms do you want, do you want a garden etc etc how many children do you have - what school will you send them to..... so, so many different variations. We were in a villa with a big garden and our water and electric could be as much as 6k per month...... I am back in the UK now (although my DH is in Dubai this week and lots of weeks!) and I'm very hapy to chat to you if you would like to talk to someone who has been where you are and jumped and did the Dubai experience. For us - we loved it. you can contact me on claire dot damamme @ ntlworld dot com.

Hi My maid still charges 25 AED an hour. She is not with any agency, but she is amazing and we love her. We've had her over 2 years now and all our friends use her. If you want, you can PM me, I can give you her details. If she's not with any agency then she can charge what she likes - if you are not sponsoring her then you run the risk of a huge fine and her hourly rate will not seem so cheap! I am assuming you do not know about the law regarding employing housemaids....... edited by Clairehdp on 08/11/2012

I think you are right to be worried about using up her visit visa. these girls often come over here having paid alot of money for their visit visa and have 30 days to find a job (they are not supposed to be working on a visit visa anyway). Most have never left their home country and arrive scared. Most are very homesick the first few weeks and miss their families desperately. Most do not choose to come here they HAVE to come here to send money back to give their families a better life. I would agree that she should have used this week to knock your socks off but....if she's scared and nervous and very homesick it will be hard. If you feel she is not right for you let her go as soon as you can so you give her enough time to find another family. have you sat with her and spoken to her? My first housemaid arrived from the Philippines having handed over her 6 month old baby to her husband. she breastfed the baby at the airport before boarding the plane to Dubai. She was quiet, very very homesick, and stuggling with leaving her 3 young children but....I could see what a lovely person she was and I spent time with her for the first few weeks helping her to improve her english and helping her to start to enjoy her day - she was fabulous and I'm so glad I stuck with my gut feelings and kept her on. If you don't feel right about this lady please let her go.

I loved doing cooking classes in people's homes. You get to learn the dishes they have learnt from their families. Thai with Juree in the meadows Thai with Abeda at the thai restaurant in the marina (Siamin) Indian with my friend Sejal in Jumeirah Islands (she's not there anymore so we just cook together now we are both back in England!) Indian with Abeda (spice and aroma) when she was in Arabian Ranches but she's now in Al Barsha Arabic with Gina in Jumeirah Lake Towers. All were relaxed, informative, interesting and you met some lovely people and ate some absolutely delicious food. the only one I didn't get around to doing was Lan who teaches Vietnamese. The guys at Table 9 are running superb cooking classes. A friend of mine did their break making class - and wow! you should see the pictures of the breads they are producing from home. Spice and Aroma also ran cultural cooking trips - I never did one but they sounded amazing and the ladies I met who did them said they were superb - not sure if Abeda still runs them but definitely worth checking. edited by Clairehdp on 07/11/2012

Medised has been discontinued. Why knock your little one out? surely at 1 he/she sleeps at some point? Be aware that some children have a reaction to 'knock out' syrup and can turn hyper on it so that would make it 10 times worse. Make sure you have their favourite toys, a nice snuggly blanket, some snacks, an ipad loaded with their favourite programmes - I always found that it was the thought of travelling with little ones that was worse than the actual travelling. good luck - i'm sure it will be OK for you.

Just another thought. You might want to check the jess Ar notice board to see what other companies offer training in their grounds. Take it as a lesson learnt. The embassy does not get involved with stuff like that. They deal with more serious matters. Also they never answer their phone. You have to actually go down to their consulate to talk to them and the queue is superlong. Very annoying I know. Hopefully your maid will one day get her items back. Have you considered perhaps going to the police? Maybe they can get her parcel back for her at least as it could be considered theft? I know its wrong but.....this is my experience..... If you go with your housemid go the philippine embassy you will be seen quite quickly. Your maid will be told to take a ticket and join the long queue but in my experience you will be dealt with quickly and politely and your housemaid will be called out of the queue. The first time it happened i was mortified but i have been a few times and each time was treated in the same way. When i spoke to my housemaid about it and how i was surprised noone else had a problem with us being taken to the front of the queue she told me that people thought she was lucky that i had gone there with her and they were happy for us be dealt with before them...... I must say that they were very polite and when i showed hesitancy at going straight to the front i was escorted by one of the security guards who told me it was fine and my housemaid was lucky to have me help her! My housemaid also had a terrible time with a cargo company - her boxes did eventually arrive but it took almost 4 months loads of phone calls and raised voices. I think the problem is the girls try to send with the cheapest companies but paying just a few dirhams more makes a huge difference. We would pay half of her costs after her bad experience so she used a more expensive company but they got the boxes there with no problems

Got married in barbados but lived in Saint Lucia and Antigua. Island living is lovely but you do need to escape from time to time. In my experience the people are friendly. I used to always take the bus which was an amazing experience with the music pumped to max and the beat throbbing through your chest! Things dont work like clockwork but you do get sucked into the laid back caribbean way and a few rum punches makes everything seem ok. If you like efficiency, order and glitz and glamour you wont find that in abundance in the caribbean. If you like a chilled out, might work.....might not type of life then that will be fine cos you'll get that there! I spent quite a few years out there and travelled to most of the islands and it was fantastic. Would i move there now i have children of school age......no. I would buy most of my fruit and veg from the local markets and you would get the most delicious fruit there. Supermarket shopping was very very basic - nothing like spinneys or waitrose. The expats i met out there were all very similar - very chilled out, very casually dressed, not surprised at all about anything! I think it takes a certain type of person to live there.....if you dont get wound up about stuff - any stuff.....then you will be fine. Beautiful islands and lovely people.

You have to ask for one with FaceTime on they will be phones/ipads from another country as those made for the UAE do not have it on. Take it back and ask for them to give you a grey market import one they're from uk, us or Australia and all have FaceTime. An official middle eastern variant ( iPhone and iPad) does not have FaceTime. edited by Clairehdp on 26/10/2012

I would give them some money towards their travel. Some arrange a car lift so they share a car lift with others which is cheaper for them. Use it as a test. When I gave them money for their travel it was very interesting to see their reactions - some kind of expected it and others were blown away. It makes it easier for you to decide who gets a 2nd interview! Not one of the maids I interviewed ever asked in advance for travel expenses but I did give money towards their travel whether they were suitable or not.
