Gosh, as a first time mom to an 8 month old this is soo so scary to read. When I moved to Dubai a couple of months ago one of the first observations I made was how people seem to be really 'interested' in your child. My husband laughs at me, and tells me i'm just being too 'wstern'. From strangers, to sales people, to maids, to guards... Comming from the west where you don't randomnly grab someone's child- this made me uncomfortable. On many occasions, I went to the mall and randomn people would put their hands in my sons pram to touch his cheeks or his hair...one security guard at an atm even attempted to take my pram away while I did my transaction. He was trying to be nice- and I get that- but this just infuriated me. I literally had to struggle and be rude to get him to take his hands off my sons stroller. It also doesen't help that my boy is overly friendly and smiles at everyone... Even women have tried to take him out of the stroller to hold him and when I stop them- they really do get angry at me. Yes-perhaps I'm paranoid, but it's my right- he's my son and I am responsible for him. I don't know you, or where your hands have been so damn right you better not touch him. This taking picture thing just gives me the creeps and all the more reason for all of us to be extremely vigilant and careful with our children and our surroundings.

Thanks guys for and thanks Sue R for the tip- I will check them out. I just find it so frustrating that I cannot find a decent price. I spent thousands back home to get to the point where I only need touch ups and now I have to spend it all over again- which I am not about to do.

I haven't done it yet, but I did see an esthetician at Belle Femme on JBR Walk as they do treatments there and so I had a consult. I think in a few weeks I will be going for my first session. Will let you know how it goes :)

I have two more spots to add to that :) The Family and Friends center in the Marina is having a best dressed competition and halloween party on the 19th (I believe), for only 40 dirhams. They have time slots of 3-4 pm and 4-5 pm that you must register for. The Potery Barn Kids at the Dubai Mall is also having a free Halloween party on the 15th that you just need to sign up for.

Oooh, you use hard lenses. I don't have that problem, but I refuse to use any contact solution other than "Clear Care" which is not sold outside the US (I think)... so I brought over 8 bottles when I moved here =D i have good news! i saw some clear care at moe! They were selling it at a small pharmacy on the carrefour level- i forgot the name of the pharmacy but i'll make special note of it next time I go.

my lo was born in -35 celsius back home and he did perfectly fine. There was a winter snowstorm the day we brought him home and the best investment i made was a footmuff for his car seat and stroller that kept him perfectlt toasty. Just layer up and enjoy the weather!

Here is their web site. http://www.emirateshospital.ae/ Hope this helps That's across from where I live! I didn't even realize there wasa hospital around here. Very good to know.

Wow Cleo 10 minutes? How many teeth did you get out? For mine I was put under and the surgery took at least half an hour, but then I had all 4 taken out. Will give him a call though, your experience sounds like it was great! To be fair I only had one taken out :) He did look at the others as well but told me that unless they were problematic I didn't need to have them out.

welcome welcome! I am myself just settling in Dubai after moving from Canada. I had the same issues with 'isolation' in the burbs. I live right near the Marina and JBR walk and I love it. I also came to realize that the burbs are not that isolated at all and have very nice communities and mom and tots groups and may consider moving out there when LO is a little older. My husband works in Media City and so this location was great for us, he's home from work within 10 mins. But for now, I love where I live, the beach is at my doorstep and so is all the action- I have a gorgeous 3 bed apartment and the building itself is very well maintained. As for groceries, I have found everything I needed and relatively well priced. The only thing I haven't found was my sons particular brand of formula, and only because I am stubborn and maybe unnecessarily paranoid, I have not changed it and so am getting his milk shipped from back home :S I don't drive, although I don't have a maid, I have indulged and gotten a part time driver which comes in very handy. I am going to look into a driving school very soon though :)

We had ours after 3 yrs of marriage and he's 7 months old today :) We weren't actively trying but weren't avoiding it either. We just took what came our way, we travelled, and did everything we wanted and are continuing to do so even after baby. I don't know any other 7 month old with as many passport stamps as our little guy lol A lot of people will tell you your life changes and it absolutely does, but life changing doesn't mean you cannot continue to enjoy what you used to. It's all about mindset and how you choose to see things. You can see traveling with a baby for example as a burden, or you can see it as an adventure... Take your time, nothing will prepare you for life with a baby, I don't think you're ever 'ready'. What you need to be is ready to accept the changes that will come your way. That's just my two cents and it's worked for me. Good luck and do what's right for you.

I live in Trident Grand Residence opposite JBR and am spoilt for choice. Nails: I go to Tilia and Finn (located in Boutique 1). The price is decent (160 for mani/pedi), good service, eyebrow treading available as well. They use Butter (non toxic) and Essie nail polish, and Jurlique products for facials. Its a nice place and I like that its just a 2 minute walk away - plus I get to window shop while waiting for my nails to dry! Hair salon: Again, Tilia and Finn has a hair salon and uses Philip B products. Ditto Beauty Within as well. Can't help with dog groomer though, sorry! Just thouhgt I'd say hi! I'm in the TGR as well and will definitely check out these spots!

I had mine removed about a month ago at Top Modern Dental Clinic in the Marina. My Dr was Dr. Mohamed Bidwi and he was excellent! I was in and out within 10 mins, minimal swelling and was recovered within 3 days. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I would highly recommend him!

It's just that " the DM" or dear maid usually comes shopping with me but I didn't want to take her to MOE with me today as she has a tendency to be car sick AND last time I bought new swimwear I saw her pics on Facebook wearing it! Hi guys!! I was in the middle of getting major and various dental work done back home. I'm now here in Dubai and want to continue. I also need impacted wisdom teeth extraction. I'm looking for good reputable dentists to do the job properly. I had an appointment at Modern Dental Clinic in the Marina and the dentist seemed like a nice guy. But nice guy doesn't necessarily mean, nice job :( Have any of you guys had major dental work here. Who would you reccomend? What was your experience like? edited by Cleo4e on 27/07/2011

If he is really showing the signs of readiness, then don't feel at all bad about starting him on solids! A small number of babies are indeed ready before six months. If he's showing the external signs of readiness (can sit up, pick up food and bring to mouth, has lost the tongue thrust reflex etc) then the internal systems will also be ready (gut function, immune system etc). If however he isn't displaying all the signs of readiness, then he could be experiencing a growth spurt (normal periods when a baby wants to feed more often temporarily) and/or the developmental "four-month sleep regression" (which may well occur around 5 months in my experience) which is not related to hunger. I agree that a lot of commercially produced baby food is not really the best thing for them. I made my own, although I think that there is some plain organic jarred food available. You don't say which city/country you live in (this board covers a few different places), but if you're in Dubai then I'd definitely check out the Organic Supermarket in Dubai Mall or the Greens. You might also like to look into baby-led weaning - which basically means offering your baby a range of (healthy) family foods and allowing him to self feed. Very messy, but some mums find it less stressful and easier to prepare. Good luck, and enjoy this new stage in your baby's development! xx He actually is showing all of the external signs as well- sitting up on his own- no tongue thrust reflex ect, as well as a growing appetite- crawling- rolling over ect... This all started at 4 months. So i've waited a full month watching and monitoring him to be sure about starting him on rice cereal. He's my first- so unless I'm wrong- I doubt his growth spurt can be ongoing for a full month? I have gone to the Organic Shop at Dubai Mall (I live in Dubai)- and really like the Hipp Organics baby food line. I'm going to start him on the fruits and veggies later on. Will also look into baby-led weaning! So much to learn with your first and appreciate all of your input. Also just to clarify- I wasn't mixing the cereal in his bottle- I was spoon feeding him in a bowl :)

Thank you all for your advice! I wanted to wait until 6 months to start him on solids but I don't think I realistically can :( I do intend on making my own a little later on, but I had to start him on rice cereal. I didn't want to introduce all the fruits and veggies just yet and wanted to wait until he was 6 months. But the poor guy is just famished all the time. So i started giving him 1 TBSP of rice cereal at night mixed with his formula just to get him through the night and it seems to work. He's a little chubster and I don't feel he gets a good nights sleep as he's waking almost every hour and a half. I'm loving the cereals from HIPP Organics and plan to do the fruits and veggies when he's a little older :)
