My LO is ready for solids... I think :) he'll be 5 months next week and I feel that baby food here has so much sugar :( Has anyone seen MILUPA baby food sold anywhere here? Or can anyone suggest some good healthy organic baby food to start my LO on? Thanks so much!

Thank you all for your advice and input. After speaking to a few other mom's as well... I would rather be safe than sorry, so I will give him the vaccine. But for my own comfort and peace of mind, I will do so back home, where vaccines are free and I will be in a familiar environment just in case there is a reaction.

BTW just to add, for quality and good finishings we suggest you narrow your search to three main developpers: EMAAR, DAMAC and Trident... units by them were the best we saw!

We also just moved here 2 weeks, and after seeing almost 50 units all around town- we finally settled on the Grand Trident in the marina. We wasted, so much time, saw soo much garbage unfortunately :( We also realized that prices quoted on places like Dubizzle.com, were very very false- the units online- were not the units shown to us and the prices were not accurate. We finally fell upon a really great agent, we unfortunately went way way way above our budget (ours was the same budget as yours), but we're so happy we finally found a place that we will love. We were looking for a 3 bedroom though- as we have a little one, and are expecting a lot of guests from back home to come and visit :)

To answer one poster's question: Our ped thought it would be on the 'safe' side to give my lo the vaccine as he claims that when living in DXB you come into contact with many people who come from parts of the world where the TB rate is quite high. This is my first child, and I don't want to expose him to harm. He's on schedule with his canadian vaccines, but this- I'm really not sure about. I don't like being a 'needle pusher' and only want to do what's absolutely necessary. I'm still not fully convinced to have it done yet...

I agree, I would like to give it to be safe. Like you said though, I am a little scared of the reaction as I heard they can be quite strong for some children. I may go back 'home' and have them give it in Canada.

I didn't have twins nor was my LO in NICU but a good friend of mine from back home, delivered her daughter at 31weeks. She was in the NICU until she was 3 months old and my friend- with a lot of persistence and patience was able to BF. She was pumping regularly to keep her supply up (I don't Farahsha would have a supply problem, if one of the twins is feeding). But I too would also question why they would not feed baby with the expressed milk?

I totally agree with you. I don't come from west. but back in Lebanon "my country" people do this as if it is so normal, smoking in the presence of infants. I guess this depends on personal mentality. At my parents, no matter what was the case, no body thinks of lighting up a cigarette while babies are around. but, everywhere else i have to take my kids and leave the place regardless of what trouble this brings up "LOADS of trouble". I keep reminding myself that whoever doesn't care of my babies health doesn't deserve my respect. I know- it's how 'our' people feel it's normal to smoke in the presence of kids which upsets me! What will it take for them to learn! They don't see this as disrespect, my own mother in law told me, I was overreacting and that I was embarrassing the guest- she didn't even think for a second what effect this was having on her grandsons health. Long after the guest was gone- the house reeked! Cigarette smoke gets into everything! The couches, the carpets... it's horrible. I can't wait to move out of here...

erm was this not your house? Common courtesy would have suggested that your 'guests' should ask if they can smoke indoors! I wish it was my house otherwise, I could have said something. It was my in-laws house- and my in-laws thought I was 'overeacting'.

Sorry... I didn't specify. This happened at my inlaws. I suppose it's the mentality here that upset me. You guys are right, there is no smoking in public places. I'm just comparing with back home- even at dinner parties in the house- people usually have the common courtesy to smoke outdoors- on the balcony or on the patio, not in your living room. In my case, a certain guest saw that there was a baby in the house and told me 'i know you come from the west- but here we don't care about smoking outside, it's too hot anyways!' and he lit up.

Sometimes...I miss the comforts of the West. So many things I took for granted ie: no smoking laws! I never in a million years thought that I would be the one who would have to shut myself in a room, with my 4 month old, "so that others could smoke comfortably and not have to stand outside in the scorching heat". I'm so so livid- that people wouldn't have the common decency not to smoke in the presence of an infant.

otherwise, I know a fantastic MUA here, by the name of Gulnaz, I can also give you her contact- not sure of her prices though and I dont think she does hair. AND- I also know of an incredible hair artist who I used to work with in Montreal. She currently lives in Lebanon but she travels to Dubai quite often, and for her service and quality of work- she very worth her price- which is not much.

I also heard that doula's can do wonders for you and give you that personal attention that you need. I gave birth at home in Canada, I didn't exactly have a nurse helping me out or guiding me through my labour and I so wished I had a doula at the time. I would even go so far as to say: perhaps a doula could have helped me avoid my c-section. Good luck with your delivery hun and do let us know how it went!

I would also say to have an open mind. I was very much like you when I delivered my 1st 4 months ago. I was dead set on having a completely natural birth. I had beautiful images of my labour starting at home..and me swaying and opening my hips on a big pilates ball and then getting to the hospital when i was about to pop and having a quick and easy delivery while squatting. hahaha Boy- was in for a surprise!! Not only was I induced a week before I was due, but had a 24 hour labour and did get an epidural when I just couldn't take it, and ended up having a painful c-section which to this day is still a little sore at the incision site. All I can say is, you may want what you want but nature may have other plans in store for you, so be open to what may or may not happen and go with it. If you need the epidural- do it, sometimes, not getting the epidural and not being 'relaxed' enough may even delay your labour- so listen to your body and at the end of the day what really counts is that you have a happy healthy baby to love.

awwwww that makes me soo sad :( I was so excited that we may have finally found 'our' place, but this mold issue scares me to death. I have a 4 month old, and I would never ever want to expose him to this. Are there companies in Dubai that you can hire as a tenant to do an inspection? I know that in Canada there are independant inspectors who will look for problems like water damage and mold? It's almost discouraging as we've seen so much '****' here

I made a tea of about 8 cummin seeds and dried fenugreek leaves and drank it 3 times a day. It was my grandmother's home remedy and it totally worked for me.

I personally had a difficult time breastfeeding with my now 4 month old . Unfortunately, I had to stop breast-feeding about a month ago but initially my milk supply was very low. I did try some home remedies that did seem to work magic in increasing my milk supply. I also, I can't say enough good things about a Tea I drank called 'more milk please' that I ordered from www.thespoiledmama.com. I'm not sure if they would ship to Dubai, but I stand by their products! They did wonders!

It's times like this I wish I was back home :( For the time being I managed to find bottled water which is apparently recommended and used for babies at carrefour- it's called 'Sanine'? To be honest though I don't trust any of these options...I have an appt with Dr. Syed Ahmed at City Hospital next monday, I'll also ask him what he thinks I should do. I feel helpless and don't want to give anything that's potentially harmful to my LO :(

Hi Guys! I have officially re-located to Dubai. Arrived tonight with LO and DH. I had a questions regarding powder and concentrate formula. I need to add water to the formula and was just wondering if it's safe to use tap water or would bottled water be better? Either way I intend on boiling it for at least 2 mins. I am going to look for a pediatrician first thing tomorrow. I also gave him a bath and am scared that the little bit of water he swallowed could make him sick? I'm a first time mom- can you tell? hahaha

thank you all fort your comments! any information and advice is welcome!! I arrive next friday and will be visiting the marina myself. I'm currently looking at the Park Island towers? I saw some adds for it on Dubizzle and am in love with the kitchens and bathrooms... Storage space and cabinets are important to me and Park Island so far seems to have the most.Is it just me or judging from the listings I am seeing, there doesn't seem to be much storage space in apartments? Closets are small...no cabinets in washrooms?

[Completely agree! We live in the Marina with three LO's and I love it. Although I would love a garden for my crazy boys to run around, there are certain advantages to living here - beach across the road, shops, cafe's etc, our building has a pool, indoor playroom, outdoor play area/ plaza... great for LO's especially when you can only get outside for less than half the year without sweltering! Indoor and outdoor playrooms? Thats so ideal for lo's!! If you don't mind my asking- what is the name of your building?

Thank you all for your input! The main reason why we chose the marina area is because of easy access to most things. Metro is important for me as a I don't drive-never had the urgency to learn as Montreal is a very pedestrian friendly city with an extensive metro system...so I got lazy :( We live in the heart of hustling bustling downtown right now- so marina traffic and noise doesen't bother us and lo is quite used the noise. We were looking at online postings of the Trident building ! Seems fantastic so far!

Just to elaborate a little more with my experience with Bikram- pe-pregnancy I did NOT work out. I guess I was lucky in that I managed to stay at a decent weight for the most part of my life without exercising. When I became pregnant- much to my disadvantage- I became COMPLETELY sedentary and suffered from horrible back pain and was advised against physical activity b my ob. I went from being 5'00 and 105 lbs to 5'00 and 184lbs (the day I delivered). This massive weight gain was also due to a lot of water retention. I lost all balance, all coordination, and all the flexibility I ever had. To top it off, al the excess stretched skin :( I looked HORRIBLE. 3 months post-partum- as soon as I got the ok from my doc, the first 'workout' I started was bikram. I did it at my own pace, modified what I needed too, and have great results. I have seen myself loose 1/2 an inch on all my measurements each week. My weight is also down to 150. IT's a slow process but I am regaining my balance and coordination and most of all, your body just feels great after each session. I don't crave junk food anymore either:) I was a little disappointed when I thought I would not be able to continue bikram once I moved to Dubai, but I'm delighted to hear that there are good classes going on. I plan on joining one asap! and that's my experience!

I'm 3 months post c-section and have a horrible saggy mommy belly :( I started doing bikram yoga (hot yoga) here in Canada and I have seen inches come off in just 2 weeks. I don't know where they may offer that out there, but I'm looking to find a class as soon I settle in there.

Thank you all for your replies!!! The one thing I definitely did notice is that everyone seems so friendly :) It's soo nice to see! TOUTI: I'm from Montreal as well :) Would love to meet up with you guys when I get there. Popsicle: We haven't finalized a place yet- will have to do so when I get there within the first week. Basically we were looking at 3 main areas JLT,Marina and JBR so that I can be close to amenities such as metros and shops and be able to go out easily while my husband is at work. I don't drive, so accessibility is important. JULZ: I'll keep in mind what to bring, I was already thinking about that and was stocking up on some nice cheap baby clothes hahaha and also, a friend of mine is a Moroccan Oil supplier in Lebanon I can easily get my hands on some products if you like :) offshorewife: Sounds like a fantastic location! maybe i'll take a look in that area as well! M_King: thanks so much for your offer I will definately drop you a line with some questions! Hi Britni!! I'm somewhat in the same boat as well. Originally from Canada (born and raised) and will be moving to Dubai in June as well. I'll be moving with my husband and my firstborn son, 3months old. Kind of excited, kind of nervous as I've never lived anywhere else. Would love to meet other moms as well!
