I'm planning a long weekend in Cyprus with my bestie in September. It will be my first trip ever without the kids so would like to make it a very enjoyable holiday. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I used the family app the whole of last year not once did I have a problem , be it at a stand alone restaurant or food court type place . Its so hassle free than carrying the book around. Thanks for the feedback...shall take the mobile app route too ;)

I've bought and served Al Khazan small hotdogs to guests. They are halal and taste good. They're with the other packaged deli meat (fresh refrigerated) in most supermarkets. The packaging includes golden cardboard. I wrap them in homemade dough and bake, so I don't know how well they would fit into the mini buns. I buy mini buns at Union Coop, Sevan brand. Oh, the homemade dough would also be an idea...would you like to share your recipe for that?

I believe they only ask for the passport that has/will expire. They also ask for the original of any current passport of a different nationality that you may have (which I thought was a ridiculous request). In terms of payment, I paid for mine online using my husband's credit card and we have different surnames. For dual nationality a copy of the other passport is required. Only if there are any queries will they then ask for the original. Which I probably wouldn't send as this is like sending it to the "enemy" ;) Lol agree! Although when I sent mine last year it said original passport for a dual nationality, or we will accept a copy in extenuating circumstances. I hope they have changed it as I read numerous threads of people objecting to having to send off a passport from a different nationality! I'm not really sure what the rationale on it is. I've just done my son's and a copy was enough. I reckon they probably want to see the visa stamps in case you are going to dodgy countries.

What a cheek of the previous employer. Of course she is trying it on to get the AED 8000 because she knows that maids are currently not allowed to come back to Dubai to work. Amazing what people are trying to do to make extra money.

Thanks ladies, I shall just apply to the school for 2017 FS1 and hopefully that's the end of it. I have no idea why things that work perfectly have to be changed.

The school told me as well that it still uses the 31st August cut-off date, but I just fear that it will be forced upon them the same way as the holiday regulations recently. With my luck I register my DD for FS1 2017 and just before starting school will be told that she needs to be in FS2 because the rule has been enforced.

The ruling not that long implemented by the KHDA to change the cut off dates from 31st August to 31st December is still confusing. Will the British schools have to follow eventually? If that's the case would my DD then have to start FS1 at 2 yrs and 10 months as she is an October child? With the old ruling she would star FS1 only a year later. It would be lovely if someone could shed some light on this.

Moorfields are great and I would definitely recommend their services. The before and after care is just amazing and no question is too stupid. I was very very worried when I had mine done and all in all took me about 2 years to bring up the courage. The Ophthalmologist however completely understood and did not pressurize me. He was also the first one to discover that I struggle with an allergy in my eyes which many doctors in the UK and UAE had always overlooked. So I'm doubly happy now as that issue was treated too.

Am really upset, I have muddled up my days and missed taking my DS to his swimming lesson. But what upsets me even more is that when I called the company and explained my mistake that they show no flexibility at all. All I asked was if they have a cancellation over the next week and I'm sure over half term there will be if we might be able to do a make up class. Rather than say "we will try but can't promise" it's straight away "sorry, it's your own fault, we can't do anything" and this is being said with a lot of malicious joy. Is it so difficult to at least be nice and try? After all it was an honest mistake :(

We live in a single story villa in in Al Barsha and find our DEWA bill extremely high. We seem to average about AED 4000 per months. Even though we have a big garden the majority of the bill is electricity which I guess comes all down to the massive old AC units we have got.

My sister has come to visit and I want to take her on a Dhow cruise at the creek. We don't want a dinner cruise just a leisurely day cruise with no food. I have a baby also so will need to be able to bring stroller onboard. Any recommendations? I haven't done a leisurely cruise on the creek but always find the Captain Jack one in the Marina is good. It's for about an hour and goes out the Marina towards the Palm and back. It's a nice little round trip.

We used to live there. It's lovely. A bit lacking in facilities and other things. But we were sad to leave. I really liked it. What did you think of the quality of the houses and I also heard that some people had problems with contaminated water...as it is just hear-say I just want to find out. It's a lot of money to spend on a villa so want to make sure we are doing the right thing.

Acutally it is very difficult to ban a maid. We tried that and were told that this is only possible if you know the right people at the right places, even the lady at immigration herself tried to ban her maid and she couldn't. Ours stole money and even though we took the case to the police, the missing amount (500dhs) which we could prove was not enough for even the police to get involved.

This is really confusing, I used to work in finance but not Islamic finance. bps means base points its its explained here http://www.investinganswers.com/financial-dictionary/investing/basis-points-bps-1283 To my understanding the term loading here would mean that the insurance policy must cover that percentage/bps of your loan. Equity release means releasing value from your home for cash. Basically if you have 50% equity in your home and you need cash for a new kitchen, car whatever, you can ask the bank holding your mortgage to release the equity its generally known as top up loan back home, you can usually do thins depending on the value of your home, your age and your payment history. Try talking to an independent mortgage broker if you can. edited by mannikat on 20/07/2014 edited by mannikat on 20/07/2014 Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

Now I'm really miffed, having read about the restrictions for the golf clubs I just checked the restrictions for the children's baggage allowance and of course it change too. While one was allowed to take one car set and one stroller per child - this has now changed to the stroller only. The car seats are part of the checked in baggage and the infant allowance is 10 kg. I only just booked my flight with them this morning and wished I hadn't. :( edited by Cleopatra on 20/04/2014 edited by Cleopatra on 20/04/2014

That's a strange move as most airlines still allow golf bags, mostly with a weight limit of up to 15kg. My DH certainly won't be impressed as the golf clubs are coming with us on every holiday. I wonder when they are going to charge for prams and car seats. Being one of the most expensive airlines when originating from Dubai, one really should be charge extra for everything else, NOT!

How did you celebrate your birthday at school? Did your parents prepare anything? I know that we never took cake into school. Birthdays were celebrated at home or park and we could chose the friends we wanted to invite, not the whole class. Why is it such a big thing here?

I'm so glad that our school does not allow all those sweet treats instead makes the birthday child the centre of attention on that day which makes them feel very special and just as happy. All that sugary rubbish should not be allowed at school, while they are apparently a huge hit with the kids, parents don't seem to see the downsides to it. My DS for example reacts to sugar quite badly. He hasn't an allergy or anything but it makes him aggressive and very difficult to manage. Shall he now be the odd one out at school and not receive those treats or shall he have it and be a pain to all others for the remainder of the day?
