Indeed ;) Loooking forward to tomorrow :D Please come along ladies to help raise awareness. This year is especially important as the UN have officially recognised the 21st of March as World Down Syndrome Day ( WDSD). The date was chosen to symbolise the 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome. Also, UAE Down Syndrome society are hosting 3 days of events to mark WDSD 2012 at Dubai Mall starting from the 21st to the 23rd March. http://www.worlddownsyndromeday.org/united-arab-emirates

Your lovely daughter will grow up with sensitivity and better understanding of those people less fortunate than ourselves who have to put up with this every day for the rest of their lives. Hope she makes a speedy recovery. Like :) I was just about to say this same thing. My son gets stared at all the time, & he always will. It used to bother me & sadden me before...a lot. All types of people stare at my child. What bugs me most, esp here, are the stares my child gets from some "educated adults" or "working professionals" ( you get what I mean?)....I can't think of a name to the look they give...but that really cuts me up & upsets me. The others I don't mind, they haven't been exposed to disablilties so much, so you can raise an awareness within them and if they ask any questions I just answer as I would when a child asks me why my DS can't speak, or why he "looks different". Of course I smile and carry on as usual and they see for themselves....In time there'll be enough awareness and exposure here that people won't look twice, it takes time that's all. Hope you daughter gets well soon :)

:( Sorry to hear your news NiP. It does feel rubbish being so far away, esp at times like these. I know you can't be there all the time, but you can Sky!e her regularly. When my father was ill I used to skype him everyday, it was about the only thing I could think of doing for "us" being so far away. Sending hugs and prayers to you and your mum

So can we quote the KHDA regulation if schools ask for another amount other than the 500aed? Do the schools "care" is another question....

I would cut out the daytime nap all mine stopped napping at age 1 and went to bed with no problems from 7pm to 7am. mine were the same now they are in school, it's dinner at 5.30/6pm, shower, teeth & share a book in bed. My youngest will sneak a toy into bed with him to play. But lights are out at 7.30pm latest :) try and keep the consistency going it'll become routine in no time :)

Funny because when I was there for an assessment , the lady very specifically said it would cost Aed 1000 for the assessment payable on the day. AED500 for registration on starting & a deposit to hold the place "if offered". They do have places, but the assessment was no guarantee, so they say. IMHO they play these mind games with the parents, to get them all flustered.

Star are assessing now btw & they don't charge an assessment fee. I am so against this assessment fee, esp if your child doesn't get offered a place! I went to Raffles South the other day & they were asking for Aed1000!!!!! I said I would think about it! Cheeky I thought! Your son is young of course he's going to become a little upset as he's in an unfamiliar environment. I hope you find something soon :)

Please don't feel bad Orchard. The assessment system is unfair here especially for children as young as 3 & 4. My DS had an assessment recently for FS2. This was our second time at the same school. The first time he wouldn't let go of my hand and flopped to the floor crying. When we eventually got him into the classroom he wouldn't speak with the teacher. The second time was much better ( I must admit I did bribe him ). I sat alongside him too, maybe you could suggest they allow you to do the same? (sit with him that is ). Lasted 20/30 mins approx! May I ask did they charge you an assessment fee? eta: Don't lose hope and stay positive :) He will get a place in FS1, maybe these schools weren't the right schools for him just now. May I just add, I have no idea which school my DS will be going to in September either!I was stressing too but now I've changed my mindset, I know he'll get into a school eventually,as people are always moving out of the country. I hope it's the best one for him, and if it isn't I'll homeschool him till I find the right school for him :) Good Luck :) edited by coco pops on 08/03/2012

If someone treated his mother/sister/daughter like that he would get so angry surely, wouldn't he?. So is this waitress not someones sister/daughter too?!!! Maybe, this is what he has grown up with, he doesn't see anything wrong with his actions. Some cultures think it's the sign of being a "MAN" to show the upper hand. Doesn't justify his actions though....he needs to have a few lessons in respect and patience me thinks.

Oh my sister had some trousers stitched from here and she was really happy with what the tailors did for her. They did it within 3 days and charged AED50. They are in Meena Bazaar, they are called Sage Tailors. She used Waris ( the tailors name) Let me know if you want their number :)

I don't blame you for feeling sorry for this man - i would too...and you feel guilty that he might be deported..If it was me i would be trying to rescue him too. Yes he knew what he was doing but the OP knows how intimidating this company can be - we don't know what they threatened him with if he didn't obey. Sad story all round and i hope the man's situation has a happy outcome. Ditto Also agree with AA. I do believe though even though the man knew right from wrong, maybe he had no choice. There are some seriously corrupt companies out there. If the young man does end up getting deported, it may well be a blessing in disguise for him; a chance to be rid from the company he works for. I know it won't be nice for him to be alone in a homeland he's never been to before. I hope this is a lesson for him and he choses the right path in life. As for the corrupt company, well this young lad was just a "pawn" (?) for them, they'll find another naive man to do their dirty work for them. I really hope they get found out! btw, if the young man does get deported, after how long can he re-apply to come back? Or, is it a lifetime ban? Please don't feel guilty, remember, you're the victim x edited by coco pops on 07/03/2012

Get a room at a very nice and watch movies in birthday suit in bed :-P *Noted* ... :D any deals on at the moment? Am I asking for too much? :D No idea on deal, but remember - the most important thing is to enjoy each other whatever you end up doing! Watch movies? I think we need to pull up Marianas post on what to do in a hotel room (the words whore dress are involved) :D[/quote was that a TNT by any chance?

I started driving from day one of me moving here, and I find it ok. I was really worried about it before, but I had no choice, I had to drive. Yes,there are some silly drivers here, esp on the SZR Rd. I'd start with the quiet roads ( if there is such a thing here) to up your confidence, like Jumeirah Beach Road, or Al Wasl Road, even side roads. Then take it from there :) Sorry I can't help with lessons, but how about a friend go with you a few times?

From what I remember, it only hurt the first night, and I slept on my side with my hand under my face. You could buy some numbing ointment ( Alma/Alba ? ask the pharmacy) and apply that to your ear before and after the piercing, if you are worried about the pain. Thank you :) I'm worried that he won't even leave me for the assessment to take place, if that makes sense? He cried last time when they tried to take him for the assessment. And, even if they allow me to go with him, he won't talk, he'll stick his finger into his mouth and hide his face! I've given him the talk about being a big boy, & going to big school like his older brothers. That we are going to see his new teachers/friends etc, but, he says nope he doesn't want to go to school. Star have been really accomodating and allow us to go in and wander around the FS area at hometime, which I've done to familiarise him with the surroundings. I'm wondering whether I should just be firm and leave him with the teachers even if he cries....but then I don't feel that's the right approach either. My other two were not like this at all, which is why I'm stressing.

I'm reading all these posts with a lot of interest. Lot's of great advice on here for me to refer back to. My eldest is 11, and I can see him being difficult for me to handle. I already struggle with him at times now, and I worry about our relationship in his teenage years. I find it hard as I can't see where he's coming from, never having brothers and going to an all girls school hasn't helped me either! Good Luck to the OP and there is a light at the end of the tunnel....you'll be able to advise me too in a few years time :)

Hi Niggly, if you do decide to put your LO in nursery, make sure you follow your instincts and dont go for convenience like I did!. I recently had a bad excperience with my LO at Golden Beach Nursery, and had to pull them out. I chose it because of the location (its very close to raffles where my older child attends). Now Im feeling like a bad mummy :( My LO is at Golden Beach Nursery & we too chose it for convenience and it seemed quite cosy. But, he's now onto his 4th teacher! They all seem really nice and experienced, so I'm not sure whats going on there ( my bet is the management) My DH has his old teachers number so I'm going to call her to ask her.I I'm a bit annoyed with DH though, because he decided to pay for the term in advance & I was considering just pulling him out and keeping him at home until a place is available at his brothers school, but he seems to enjoy it there & he runs into his class. I won't be keeping him at the nursery next term though..... eta do you mind me asking what the bad experience was? edited by coco pops on 02/03/2012

ours supposedly failed the assessment at Star - they would only offer him a place for the year below but i refused to put him back a year... then 2 weeks into the September term they emailed us asking if we had found a year 2 place..i guess they had unexpected vacancies !! Was he coming from another curriculum? That's interesting though.... I thought my DS would fail his assessment, as his grades really dropped in his last school after only being there for one term.

Oh sorry to jump in....my DS has an assessment at Star Int'l too but for FS2. I was going to ask the same question lol My older DS had an assessment for Yr 7 & it was just stuff they should be currently doing at their levels. So I'd guess for Yr 1 it would be basic foundation/KS1 type questions & Yr 3 level 2 KS1 type questions. They just want to see if your child will integrate with the rest of the class. If you're coming from the UK they should be ok :) Me on the other hand, my LO refuses to go with the teachers, he's so clingy, he refused to even speak with them last time! This will be my second attempt!

You could look at it in two ways depending on you ( as I don't know you) 1) If you already regularly give to charity anyway, then why feel guilty if you choose to spoil yourself, on this one occasion? or 2) You can listen to your heart & buy yourself those lovely designer sunglasses, and you'll feel good everytime you wear them.....for a few minutes at least. Then you'll always remember what your head was saying at the time, & you'll remember this thread.....& I have no idea how you'll feel then, only you can answer that one, but I'll guess you'll feel bad, if you're feeling bad now. :) Let us know what you decide though ;)

I'm leaving as soon as school breaks up for summer. We are going to decide exactly for how long when we are out there. I would like to stay there for the whole duration, as I want to spend Eid with both sets of families, plus it'll be by first time back since we moved last year. DS, however, wants to come back for Ramadan, as he really enjoyed having sleepovers at the Mosque. Let's see.... I moved in Ramadan, & I loved it here. I'd come back if it wasn't for Eid lol! I couldn't fast, but I didn't find it a problem at all. You can do what you like in the privacy of your own homes, & by the looks of it from other posters here, employers have set aside rooms etc for the people who want to eat.

I copied this from Wikipedia. It will be interesting to see if the results are good on me! Aleppo soap can be used daily as soap for washing and shampooing, as face mask, as shaving cream and baths for infants and babies.[8'> The soap promotes wound healing,[9'> is effective against insect bites[10'> and is used for a variety of skin ailments such as skin allergies, irritated skin or conditions such as general dermatitis like eczema, psoriasis, bacterial dermatitis, acne, herpes, rosacea, it also helps prevent hair loss and it aids in the recovery of skin diseases.[1'>[unreliable source?'> Laurel oil is an effective cleanser, antibiotic,[11'> anti-fungal[12'> and anti-itching agent. Compounds extracted from Laurus Nobilis have recently been identified as an inhibitor of human melanoma (skin cancer) cell proliferation,[13'> as well as inhibiting other human tumor cell growths such as amelanotic melanoma, renal cell adenocarcinoma, and breast cancer cell lines.[14'> Olive oil has been known for generations not only for its healing qualities but also as a natural, deep penetration moisturizer, regenerating skin cells and softening the tissue.[15'> Unlike most soaps, Aleppo soap will float in water.

I've been giving my DS's Echinacea tincture for the past few years, & thankfully, apart from the minor cold or sniflfles here or there, they have been fine. DS2 has a low immune system anyway and always used to get chest infections every year, so I've not had to give them anti biotics for ages now :)

Thank you Roysie :) Villa is our preference, we're in an apartment now, & tbh there's not much privacy....I have to keep telling the kids not to make too much noise, and to stop scraping the furniture beause neighbours can hear everything! The kids miss having a garden...My thing is, where it takes me 10 mins to take my children to school, it'll take me at least 20 mins if not half an hour, which may not seem like a lot here, but it's a lot in the mornings when we are rushing around like crazy to make it out the door. We just need to weigh up our pros and cons.... I prefer Waha/Layan to The Springs though, which was also a consideration :) eta thanks for the email, I'll message you should I have any other questions to ask :) edited by coco pops on 22/02/2012
