I have tried endlessly to get through to the DFWC and they have never answered the phone. I'm just glad I'm not a woman in distress in urgent need of help. It did say in their time out listing a while ago that they needed volunteers and I'm pretty sure I read in the newspaper some time back that they were starting a volunteer programme. Having tried for so long and got nowhere I've given up on them. I'm still very keen to become involved in voluntary work helping women so if find any useful info please post here (or maybe those of us interested could meet to work out how we could do something useful together?). I'm game....

I was also interested in volunteering and contacted this organisation called Dubai Foundation for Women & Children. I never heard back from them. I did recently contact them again, but, the lady I had to speak to was away. I'll try again next week. IA Try them. You can google it for more info. HTH Thank you coco pops I have basically called them on and off all week with not a single answer so I am beyond frustrated and about to march upstairs and tell Dh he has to find a way to get me ministry backing or something to start my own shelter. How on earth can they not pick up the phone!?! While I love aspects of Dubai these sorts of things drive me mad. I have just found a site to Ewa'a which my mother in law mentioned to me, its in Abu Dhabi but it seems legitimate and I wouldn't mind the travel if it did some good. Have you ever heard of them? No I haven't. I'll google it later as I'm off for a bit of 'me' time. I really really wouldn't mind going either, ( as long as DH will help with school runs etc) as I feel there is a need for it here. I was beginning to think that there wasn't a need for volunteers....

Coco Pops - try Paperchase. They do all different size and coloured cardboard and the most adorable novelty stickers. Cardboard is from about 2 Dhs upwards and the stickers are about 7 Dhs. (I should take my own advice really.....) thanks I'll give it a go one of these days!

I totally refuse to buy cards from Hallmark, I think it's a rip off. Lulu's I've bought from....not much variety and pretty basic. I've actually thought of making them myself now, even though I don't have a creative bone in my body :( & tbh it sometimes works out to be the same cost as a card bought from back home. But cheaper than here I suppose & it's personal. So now I have to think of where to buy the supplies from....any ideas anyone? (which reminds me, I need to ask my sister to bring me a few cards back for my LO's birthday)

I love Dubai because of: The sunshine :) It's amazing how it can make a difference to my grumpiness The fact that I can leave my handbag/ GPS in the car ( locked) for even a short while & not come back to a smashed windscreen! Mini Mart home deliveries for when I run out of milk for the LO's Feeling safe when DH leaves town for a few weeks The desert & the camels The diversity of nationalities ( had this in the UK too though I suppose) I'm not too sure about the acceptance of all nationalites, but I think it's pretty positive, I mean no one has told me to "go back to where I came from!!" :D ETA my list could go on about the food, but I'll put on more kilos thinking about it.... edited by coco pops on 02/02/2012 edited by coco pops on 02/02/2012

Fatimaa, sorry I can't help with Arabic schools, but, what school does the youngest child ( with Down Syndrome) attend? In Dubai there are three special need schools. Dubai Centre for Special Needs, Rashid Paediatric Centre & Al Noor. I have a child with Down Syndrome who attends Rashid, & I'm very happy with the school. The fees are around 21,000 for the year, & I think they are all around the same. I know several children go there already from Sharjah to all schools mentioned.....HTH thanks CP. her yongest one is almost 4 yrs old. I think she is mild down syndrom. I have seen her she is very intelligent & can understand everything. only one thing that still she can not speak properly, only few words like mama, sister. My friend is thinking once she starts talking fluently then she can go to normal school Insha'Allah. I am always praying for my friend & her kids. She is really very hard working lady. This is probabIy a good idea. I sent my DS to mainstream from nursery to year 4, and Alhumdulillah, he did very well, and integrated within his peers fantastically. It did wonders for him socially. Let me know if your friend needs any more help, I've not been here for very long, but I can try and help her as much as I can :)

I've just been through the process :) The transfer certificate is submitted into the new school once he/she has left current school. In my case, I submitted a withdrawel form, giving the school a leaving date, and they phoned me 3 days after he had left to say that the TC was ready. HTH.

I do what dramaqn does. A lot of the time I never even used to bother with a cleaner as I thought I may as well do it myself if I have to stay at home with her, plus a lot of the ones I have had are so slow! I've now invested in a small safe, & so hopefully instead of staying at home I'm going to go to the gym/catch up with paperwork/ shop etc I don't have the cleaner round when my kids are off school though....pointless exercise....half hour later it's a tip again :(

I got so excited I was ready to use my wipers! I've not used them since I've moved here :( But it was drizzle more than rain. Still, I enjoyed having the car windows down & taking in "that smell" you get when it rains.... edited by coco pops on 20/01/2012

wow, how inspiring. I am still doing poorly, but will achieve more once the kids are back in school. Thanks for the tip on the treadmill being on incline. yikes....So are you saying I was wasting my time? Would you feel more motivated if you had a partner? Sometimes this gives you the extra push you might need. I've recently started jogging in Barsha Park, it's nice seeing other people going at their own paces around you.

I have an Indesit dishwasher, which is actually not bad. It is noisy though. If you have the budget and you're here for the long term I'd say invest in a Siemens or similar, because they are built to last. :)

Registrar confirmed that as DS went to a school in the UK, then the school transfer letter doesn't need to be attested. They need to tell the rest of the staff that, because her colleague told me otherwise, and had me running around like a blue ar!$d fly ( I think that is what the saying is?) edited by coco pops on 14/12/2011

I'm pretty sure Homecentre had some....I bought a flowery one from there as I was desperate for one, they had the same in a pale yellow colour? Or you could try Lakeland in MOE I'm not sure how much you'd want to spend on them though if you are looking to buy 10....

I can understand the confusion you must be feeling, not knowing why? But, you made the bold step in asking her, and it was she who pushed you away. I agree with everyone here, & it's always best to keep with friends that want to be your friends. It's also wrong of her to involve her daughter & again you've proved that you're not going to stoop to her childish behaviour by preventing them from playing with one another. (((((hugs)))))

When I got married & when my children were born.... It's the norm in our culture to go home after the children are born, so that mothers can make all the comfort and nourishing foods our bodies need after childbirth, also just to help support us. ETA not that it was just about food of course ;) edited by coco pops on 09/12/2011

Busted by Lovelly ;-) I think the flylady concept is great. For me I was always overwhelmed, and still am but the fact that 15 mins does make a difference works for me. I do it all, the movement, the daily missions. I'm in way where I want to be but I'm def much happier. How about you Lovelly? Ha !! I knew it !! I'm still in BabySteps, I'm not a very good housekeeper but find the 15min. very usefull. memories.....I remember attempting this a few years back, however the last thing I wanted to do before bed was make my sink lovely and shiny!

DYSON!! all the way! I've tried various vacuums over the years, but Dyson tops them all. I've had 2 in the past 8 years ( had to replace my first as it fell down the stairs and broke) It has a warranty for 5 years, and if after 5 years something goes wrong, (I'm not sure about Dubai, but in the UK) you could call an engineer out ( I paid approx 300 DHS call out) and they would replace any parts that needed replacing. So you never really have to throw your Dyson away. I miss my Dyson....I may have to invest in one here.....

lol BOO great sites thanks.....I'm still reading the BBC one...here's something I've copied and pasted below, which me no likey likey: "Originally, in British English, everyone would have spelt the past tense of learn with T – I learnt to drive, I learnt to cook, but you’ll find more and more people in the UK now using the ed ending. The same is true of verbs such as spell – as in I spelt it incorrectly – with a T at the end. But now you’ll find more and more people using - [b'>I spelled it incorrectly[/b'> – with an ed at the end." ETA anyway it explains why people use "ed" when I'd use "t" edited by coco pops on 09/12/2011

lol you see now you know why I asked the question :) I've seen people use "learned" where I would normally have used learnt...e.g I learned by reading so and so book it used to bug me, because I would have used learnt. But then I didn't know whether I was right or wrong....lol My DH says " a nonsense" ie "what a nonsense" that used to really wind me up because to me it's " what nonsense" anyway....let's leave it at that eh? ;)

Really? do you mind if I ask why you can't use bleach? I only ask because when I bought my LG washing machine in the UK, within the first year I got those marks on my clothes, along with these other grey powdery marks only noticeable on my whites. So when I googled it & went on some plumbing forums, I read it was ok to do that, to help clear the build-up. I have to say, my washing machine was ok after that. Was it a flukey then do you think? How about dishwasher tablets? are they ok to use? :)

I too have been thinking about returning to work after almost 4 years off to stay at home with my LO. I'm also from an accounts background....I'm part-qualified ( never got round to qualifying , tried after the kids, but decided I'd rather watch paint dry!) I always had fairly good roles in finance.Whereas in London I'd get a good salary, here I'm not so sure, because of the reasons stated by SanRan. I've decided I'd much rather choose a new direction, still in Finance, but what? I have no idea, I know I'd like to work part-time though so I can fit it around the children. Hope it goes well for you dibdab let us know how you do :)

oh I used to get this with my washing machine....it needs a clean, as it's the build up from detergents and fabric conditioners. Just stick 1/2 dishwasher tablets ( you could add some bleach too but that's optional) in the drum and run the machine empty on a cotton wash at the highest temperature. I'd do this a couple of times initially then once a month to maintain. Hope this helps...if it doesn't you may need to call someone out. :)

TBH I truly don't remember as most of the communication was between DH & the school. All my DH told me to get was a stamped signed letter form the schools. Also, my other DS school hasn't requested it, I'm wondering whether it's because he goes to a special needs centre which doesn't have "school" status, even though they have a school section, if that makes sense? I should probably check with them too.

I wish I had brought our bikes over now. My DS has a special needs trike which you hook upto the adult bike, which was expensive and we only got it last year. Seems like a waste sitting in our garage in the UK, when the weather is great here to enjoy biking. I say we....more DH & the kids...I never got round to buying a bike....may just do that now though :)

I suffer badly....but I'm peri-menopausal. The language that used to come out of my mouth, & sometimes still does can be quite shocking & I can be really moody. I take starflower oil ( stronger than primrose oil) & Vitamin B. Also, exercise helps, as does Yoga/meditation. I used to have some crystal tumblers too which I used to keep with me, and roll in my palm, but I forgot to pack them with me :( HTH
