If you do a search you should find a thread on it from last year. I remember posting about it along with a couple of others

I've heard from a friend that John Lewis will do gift registry for Dubai. They offset the cost of postage/shipping against the VAT apparently

It's good to buy a few months supply when you see Cerazette because they seem to go out of stock from time to time and there is a mass panic where everyone is looking for them!

Assics (sp) are the best running shoes. I think it's down to personal preference as to what brand you find 'best' edited by coffee_mate on 03/01/2013

Only seems right I should reply to this one! I have a gaggia titanium and love it. They are not the cheapest brand, but I think one of the best. They sell them in the garden centre.

Is it not available anywhere here then? (It's just appeared on DH's wish list!) I was actually looking for it this weekend, too, and could not find it either. If you happen to find a retailer who carries it, please share! Will do! I was hoping to have finished all my S&S ordering, so hope it can be found!

OP, I'd be annoyed too. It's not exactly small change (ok, maybe to some it is). What was your reaction to her on the phone when she called you? I'd put this one down to experience I guess. Next time any invites come in, remember to ask how much.

The cheek of some people! Appletiser - I'd just send them a gift voucher for any well known restaurant that they can redeem, with a note 'Happy Christmas. Enjoy a night on us!' eg Jamie's Italian are now all over the UK. edited by coffee_mate on 12/12/2012

There is a art/school supply shop in one of the Beach Road malls. Can't remember which one, but might be worth trying in the Beach Centre

I'm pretty sure when I last drove down Diyafah Murad had closed down. Don't know whether it was just for renovation or for good? It's just moved into the al ghazel mall (same one as mr bens) def still trading though edited by coffee_mate on 11/12/2012

http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=166389 If you search old threads on this you will find the phone number for Murad that I posted a while back. They are cheaper than the Wedding Shop and will deliver/collect if required. edited by coffee_mate on 10/12/2012

Cannot open a bank account Unless there has been a change, Emirates NBD used to allow you to open an account on a visit visa. It was a very basic account, with no CC allowed.

I don't know what the latest availability is because I stopped looking. Now we've decided to stay at home and order everything in from Maydan instead of going out. I hope you find something. Maybe a case of ringing round a few places to see who has any spaces left?

There is some good stuff on www.uncommongoods.com this website is fantastic could go wild with my spendings there, but do they deliver to UAE ? Me too... I was going to use my S&S in the US and had a few things in my 'basket'. Then I went to pay and hit the wall.... I think you need a US billing address :0( Re-googled and found some similar item on Amazon.co.uk, so ordered from there instead. I think I've just been saved from spending a lot of money on that website. Thank goodness I don't have a US credit card! hahahaaa

Not currently but I have in the past. If you end up having to go down to an office to pay in person, make sure they honor the 'online price'.

I've been toying with the idea of making chutneys to give as presents (make them pretty in nice jars with ribbon etc!) Then I thought about somehow concocting a Jack Daniels chutney (or similar). I don't have a recipe so it might be 'trial and error'!

Unless the parents are Emiratis, I don't understand why would it be a "lottery of life" for a baby to be born in the UAE? Exactly! If anything, I've found it to be more of a hindrance. For example, when I apply for anything official (eg UK passport) I have to say I wasn't born in the UK. That usually leads to another section to fill in. When I went to college, there were more question marks over my fee status. As an expat born here, I see absolutely no benefit whatsoever

I'm with them and have recently had to use it. I made sure I went to a clinic on the direct billing list so didn't have to pay anything. All very straight forward and easy.

I would nip this in the bud immediately and warn her to never ask again! Have seen and heard about this so many times and it's rarely true. Sorry if it sounds harsh but I believe your friend is opening herself up to a whole heap of trouble. ETA... [i'>if [/i'>of course she is telling the truth, I would ask for copies of the bill. I would then call the hospital personally to check their authenticity. If all adds up, then I would look at ways to assist with her request if possible. But I would not be taking her word for it. edited by coffee_mate on 02/12/2012

I just wanted to share with you ladies a great hairdresser I have just found in DSO and fantastic price too...the best cut I've had since I arrived in Dubai over five years ago. A really lovely girl from ireland She is based in the SHEBA beauty lounge.. Is SHEBA the one in the Le Solarium Building next to DESCO printing, or is it somewhere else? tnx No, that's Beauty Avenue. Sheba is in the building where 'Chin chin' in that's never opened (if that helps!) on the way to the smaller Market Spinneys and Costa/Semmer villas

louisedvs is correct. In Satwa there is a shop called Murad Boutique. It's upstairs in Al Ghazal Mall (same one as Mr. Bens) I've used them recently for tux hire and they were cheaper than The Wedding Shop in the Jumeira Centre on Beach Road. They even delivered them!

Don't panic. I thought I'd give myself a break a few months ago as well. Like you, I was fearing the worst. However, I'm pleased to say everything was back to normal within a month and I had no side effects whatsoever. Maybe I just got lucky, but there is hope for you! Good luck
