Background checks? I think these would be quite impossible to get here! I agree with the poster who said rent should be paid monthly by direct debit (as in the western world), deposits would be 4-6 weeks rent and agency commission paid by the landlord, 1 months rent. Until we get the system here changed unfortunately stories of deceit, fraud, poor maintenance, unreasonable rent increases etc will only increase.

I don't see how she could have broken it, she never uses it and we always wash these knives by hand straight after we've used them and put back into the knife holder. I think I will have to report it, but I plan to cancel my service and get my key back first!!!

You can use multiple vouchers but print them out individually as some places insist upon different numbers on each of the vouchers (we nearly caught a cold with this at Parrilla a few weeks ago!).

Monsoon in Wafi closed a while back, but MOE has just reopened. I hadn't appreciated Monsoon had been refurbished but a month or so ago I went to look for it and couldn't see it, just assumed I had missed it - now I know I didn't. Thanks for clarifying!

Hi all Am over in Dubai for the weekend and would like to buy the camel milk chocolates that come in the wooden long box...does anyone know where they sell these, without having to go to the actual factory shop? Thanks It's really funny that I saw this thread as I bought two wooden boxes of camel milk chocolate just yesterday (all because of the box!). The deli shop in The Grand Hyatt on the lower ground floor has an amazing selection of camel milk chocolates, in fact the whole shop is temptation from beginning to end. Time Out has a list in this weeks edition but only 10 places and some are a bit out of the way - Bistro Madeleine, Intercon Dubai Festival City. More Cafe, Gold and Diamond Park. Thyme, Oasis Beach Tower, Dubai Marina La Petite Maison, DIFC (last year all the restaurants were open in DIFC) Sino Chai, Heathcare City The Burger Joint, Atlantis Sushi Counter, Dubai Media City Wox, Grand Hyatt Hotel Hofbrauhaus, JW Marriott, Deira Asha, Wafi All big hotels will have somewhere screened off too, even The Kempinski at MoE

My kids were 14 and 16 when we moved here, both finished their education in Dubai and went on to university in the UK (and have finished that too), and the eldest has now returned to work here. From our expereince it was all very positive, they got a good education here and the UK universities accepted their IB results and admitted them without difficulty. Life here as a teenager is great, you can give them quite a bit of freedom but local laws prevent them from getting into trouble or getting in with the wrong set (there are always exceptions of course). What did they miss? Certainly no Saturday jobs in McDo's are possible here but after starting uni we put pressure on them to work through holidays and at weekends, both did and I am sure the work experience on their CV's helped with them get that all important first proper job interview. We have never regretted staying here, and our kids both think of Dubai as home these days and have lots of friends who live here so holidays are great fun! Not sure if I have really helped answer any of your worries but we decided that our job circumstances were such that to stay in Dubai made more sense in the grand scheme of things than going 'home' to the UK.

Thank you so much! It's for one of my colleagues at work (not me - my kids are 24 and 22 these days) but as the family are late applying plus the kids have never been taught in English before finding places is quite a challenge. Keep your fingers crossed that they find somewhere suitable!

It's a new facility just opened a few weeks ago, apparently very nice. You will find it between the Central Lab and Karama Main Post Office. Any taxi driver will be able to take you there.

I seem to remember seeing a selection of different weights of canvas in ACE Hardware. It really does make a difference, we covered our car port in The Lakes years ago and apart from the cars getting really dirty when it rained it was a great decision.

This is quite normal (some landlords are trying to put an even higher figure). It stops tenants calling in maintenance to change light bulbs etc.

I think phoning agents is far more productive, and then call them again or sms to confirm appointments. I have to work with agents every day and even after 8 years still do this.

I was warned about this 2 years ago when I had 3M tinting put on my new car so I had a clear but heat refective film put on the windscreen instead, it was very expensive though - as much as the rest of the car combined!

Do you really think it is fair to expect tenants to move each year and pay 5% to real estate agents, the cost of moving and goodness knows how much more to rent the same size unit?? We own an apartment in Belgium and the rent has remained the same for years, we are allowed to increase it by inflation (approximately 1-2%) but landlords rarely do if they have a good tenant, WHY? Because as landlords WE pay the agents fees unlike in this place. This place is getting back to the bad old days, greedy landlords, unhappy tenants and no feeling of security.

I remember being scared to death the first few times I drove with my new born, and that was in the UK. I think being a new Mum carries such huge responsibility and driving in a place like this is already very stressful. You'll be fine, remember you are safer in your own car with you driving than you would be in a taxi.

I don't know all the answers but here are some! You are not allowed to take in your own food and drinks, there are places there to buy food/drinks. Just take your swimming stuff and towels, everything else is there. It should be lovely today as there is a breeze, not sure about the shady spots - sorry! My kids are grown up so I don't know the answers to the water wings/life jacket question. Have a great day.

Lovely villas, a mixture of town houses, bungalows and larger villas. I think rents start at about 200k - ish upwards. They are all privately owned so you have to look on Dubizzle etc.

My company have many people who are on AD visas but chose to live in Dubai, generally because it's cheaper, but also other half's job might be based in Dubai, kids have school places etc. It isn't easy to 'move' a family 100kms down the road, especially when school places are even harder to find there than they are here in Dubai. If this rule has been extended to private companies there needed to be more notice, our PRO was going to meet with some the relevant people in immigration today so hopefully I will be able to provide accurate feedback tomorrow. <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 01/05/2013</em>

Where did the thread about Abu Dhabi visa holders having to live in AD go? This is such an important topic I find it hard to believe it has been deleted.
