I saw a villa last week where they had attached garden trellis to the interior stairscase to make it safer, it looked quite good and wouldn't be outragously expensive either.

The price of villas varies according to size, for 195k I would expect the villa to be a 1E or 1M The Ranches aren't miles from everything, you are approx 15 minutes from Mall of the Emirates, 20-30 minutes from Dubai Mall etc. Safa School hasn't much experience with senior school pupils as until recently they have only been a junior school. I thnk the assessments at Repton are OK, especially if the kids are English speakers - I have heard they are tough on non English speaking kids. Good luck and welcome to Dubai.

The good news is that I ordered a new maid from indonesia through Al Ahliya and she arrived in 18 days from when I paid the deposit until she arrived. I was very impressed with that and so far she has been great. Mail Order Maids.....!

Kids who are studying here find it almost impossible to get internships so a visitor to the city has no chance, unless you or your husband can offer her something. No companies offering interships for a few weeks will sponsor - they would be expected to be on the family visa or do visa runs.

You can take some rental cars out of Europe, we have often rented through a scheme run by Renault where you in effect buy the car and use it while you are in Europe then return it to them, but you pay as though you are renting it. The scheme allows the manufacturers to manipulate their sales figures and it is only expats that can do this, no european residents.

If you took the dog excess baggage to say Paris or Amsterdam - would you be allowed to rent a car and take the dog with you on the train/boat over to the UK. I have often wondered if you could do this, does anyone know the answer?

If it's a small dog then Carrefour sell them. We still put our 8 month puppy in her crate at night, during the day we don't bother as she seems quite happy to just sleep in her basket but as soon as we get home she barks like crazy. At night, even when our grown up kids get home late,she is quiet and doesn't bark - thank goodness (or the kids would have to go!!).

My DH has custom made innersoles and when he buys shoes he always only buys a pair if the innersole of the shoe is actually removable and replaceable with his special ones. So far he has been quite fortunate but ladies shoes might be more challenging.

We put notes under the doors of all the 1 bed apartments for 10 floors and got offered quite a few car parking spaces, there are always lots of empty spots but you obviously can't just take one! I am sure Emaar also have spaces you can rent but if I recall they were very very expensive compared to a 'private' deal. (We aren't in Fairways but in Links next door).

I really wouldn't want to do a brunch alone, I can't think of anything worse. If it were me I'd wait and do one once I had made some friends. Why not find yourself a spot to people watch in a cafe in Dubai Mall or Marina Mall? I think you'll feel more comfortable.

Check out Property Shop, their ladies are all good. Twinnet are also good. The problem with those areas is that landlords are traditional and harder to reach out to.

So sorry to hear you are facing this. There seems to be a crackdown at the moment. We've had notices under our door from Emaar asking us to report anyone we suspect of doing this. FFx Oddly I always thought that sharing is allowed in freehold properties - has this changed too?

You really need to check how much puppies cost in the UK before saying AED10,000 is ridiculous! We got a Havanese puppy from a UK breeder and she cost us a lot more than 10k once we had paid for innoculations/shipping/clearance here etc. etc. However I still think buying from an ethical breeder is the only way to source a well bred and healthy pup, I would do it all over again - you just need to be aware of how much it all adds up to. I believe AB vets in Al Barsha can arrange puppies from Holland but you will have to go and talk to them to confirm this information.

Do look at Jumeirah Park, Victory Heights and Green Community Motor City as well. Whilst Jumeirah and Um Suqeim are lovely I have always found Americans hate most of the kitchen and bathrooms there! They do tend to be rather dated and grubby!

I would also consider looking at Jumeirah Village Triangle, its a bit further away but you get much more for your money. 2 bed villa is 90,000 which I think is very reasonable. Not sure about the travel distance though. You should have a look at Dubizzle.com if you want the best deals for property and you can have a look at 2nd hand furniture there as well. Be careful quoting rents that are miles out of date - JVT 2 bed villas are now upwards of 130k. I suggest you look in Sports City/Jum Village Circle and Discovery Gardens.

I was there yesterday and Penny showed us the uniform - khaki shorts (boys) skorts girls with a marroon stripe, and striped cotton shirts, polo shirts and shorts for PE. Very practical and tasteful (well that's my opinion anyway!). Fees will be around 40k a year, in line with similar schools. Also they won't take any money until the school building is actually finished - scheduled for mid May.

Yes I think that generally speaking that is correct, I have not seen US diploma amongst the possible entry requirements of UK unis, though I guess you'd have to actually contact them to find out for sure as may be it's not listed as it's unusual amongst those applying to the Uk. Kids with a High School Diploma will generally have to complete a foundation year in UK universities, and then apply for their undergrad course - it doesn't exclude them!

We used to love Anise but they have downgraded it in the last 6 months and we swore never to return after we went in December - far less fish to chose from, Pork gone completely and dreadful music (too loud too). We have just booked Parrilla at JBH, has anyone done that brunch? It's eye wateringly expensive but the Entertainer has a BOGOF voucher valid til end of May!

Generally blood tests show if you are pre or peri menopausal etc. Did they do a scan or anything for their AED 950? Sounds outrageous to me. <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 02/04/2013</em>

Most tenancy contracts prohibit subletting so I suggest you speak to your landlord and try to make a deal that you allow possible new tenants to view and when they re-let it they will let you off any penalty payments.

What does DNRD stand for? I have been told by the eGate offices themselves to activate your ID card as your eGate card as well, cos it's unreliable. I would suggest he nips along to the DNATA Centre on SZR opposite Safa Park and gets a new eGate card, it only takes 15 minutes if you are lucky and the queue is small!

As far as I know all Emaar buildings allow pets, however short term rentals are down to the individual property owners or the group. Might be worth calling Platinum Gulf Real Estate as they have lots of furnished apartments in Old Town and I think they will allow pets, certainly someone I know has a cat in one of their furnished apartments,

Rent to start with, you can't buy a car without a UAE driving licence either. Lots of cars on Dubizzle and also look at the notice boards outside the supermarkets, Park n'Shop on the Al wasl Road is especially good, and Spinneys nearby,

The areas around Safa Park are quite busy in the mornings with school traffic, the journey won't take more than 15 minutes but parking at school might well be more of a challenge!

You'll find almost everything you need in the retail centre by Golf Towers. Choithrams, Tips and Toes, restaurants from Wagamamma to Costa and lots in between. In driving distance you are just 5 minutes from The Mall of the Emirates, 10 minutes to Marina Mall and a bit further to Ibn Battuta. I asked the broker we use this same question last week and apparently if you have just passed your test here then you can't hire a car for 12 months. If you have a valid licence from your home country but had to take the test here to qualify for a UAE licence then I think you might be able to hire a car.

I spoke to Kings School just this morning and was told they will just go from FS1-Year 2 (this September but add year classes later on) but that there FS classes already look quite full. Victory Heights is also full for FS classes but OK from Year 1 to 6, although currently Years 5 and 6 will be a combined class. <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 13/03/2013</em>

Getting into a good school in the UK state system is worse than finding a good school here, unless you actually have the address of your home there they aren't interested, so you are going to go right to the final moment not knowing where he'll be able to attend. You should find private schools more sensible to deal with and hopefully bullying won't be a problem in any school. Good luck!
