You should check out The Greens and The Views too, they are very family friendly and can be a bit cheaper than in the Marina. A very easyt commute to internet city too.

Mirdif City Centre is a wonderful shopping mall with Carrefour, Debenhams and loads of other shops. There is also Uptown Mirdif with Spinneys etc. Pools and other amenitites depend on where you chose to live as they tend to be provided by the compound. I don't know the area very well but my impression is that the compounds are smaller than in some areas (like Springs/Meadows) and often owned by one landlord. You could consider living in Silicon Oasis or The Villa too, both not far away.

You should be in the left hand lane of the roundabout until just after the exit before the one you want, people who drive round the whole roundabout on the right hand side are in the wrong (at least that is how I interpret it) but I am surprised how many people do stick in the right all the way round. Why have two lanes if you only use one??

Without a valid UAE visa he should take care as insurance is the issue here. We have friends who have mothballed their 2 cars and rented one while they sort out their residency visas.

Dear Cornish Pixie and SoyLatte - you give me hope - and for that I thank you!! But for now - do we submit just passport copy with the latest scanned copy of the visa (before it got 'cancelled' stamp or come clear with the school? I would just send a copy of the old visa but say that your child will have a new visa before school starts. The schools have to provide this information to the ministries but only AFTER the child has started school so you have over 6 months still to go!

BEKO have been in the news a lot recently with heaps of warnings - I suggest you get an independent check on all your appliances as there have been some terrible accidents in the UK caused by faulty products. Sorry I hate to scare you but better safe than sorry! http://refsafety.beko.co.uk/ http://metro.co.uk/2011/07/07/beko-forced-fridge-freezer-recall-warning-to-be-removed-from-website-69512/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2286838/Safety-alert-138-000-faulty-Beko-home-appliances-pose-risk-thousands-families.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

You won't have to provide the school with a copy of your child's residency visa until the start of the school year, and even then many new pupils do not yet have their visas for a variety of reasons! Don't get yourself too stressed over this yet as hopefully your DH will soon have a new job, or failing that you can sponsor your child - also it isn't complicated at all to have your child on your visa, hopefully your company pro will be able to help.

Thanks Cornish Pixie. I did as you said, and got this: "The rent for a Two bedrooms Villa in Springs is in the range 75000 to 110000 AED per year. Your rent is less than or equal to 25% of the average similar rent in the area. So you are not entitled to any increase of rent." What does it mean, does anybody know? Our rent is currently 87k. Thanks. This means that your rent falls within the correct banding for a 2 bedroom Springs villa and that according to the rent calculator your landlord isn't entitled to an increase. However playing devils advocate your villa would re-let for a far higher rent than 87k so my suggestion would be to offer to pay a 5% increase but to insist that it is renewable after the next 12 months. This is a really difficult situation as of course landlords want to get the best return they can on their investment, many want to sell as the prices have gone back up, but the tenants are not getting bigger rent allowances from their employers.....no happy solution for all.

Yes, it's there, but when you put all the information in, it says the calculator is "under updating". Just put in a date a few days ahead and it seems to work.

I think it would probably be a waste of time leaving his CV anywhere in Dubai, tell him to email it to the various banks head offices with a covering letter explaining what he is looking for. Most banks will have a central HR department and will recruit from online applications and via agencies or linkin.

This is a very difficult area here, the schools are not very sympathetic to any LD. My suggestion would be to engage the help of Fiona Coutts, she is an educational advisor, it will cost you but I think her knowledge will make or break the move here. Fiona Coutts 050 544 8916

Some maids rooms are smaller than the study in a 2 bedroom Springs townhouse. Have you thought about moving to Jumeirah Village Circle? There are significantly larger apartments at about the same price as a 4M or 4E in the Springs.

Hi Mesha, Indeed as October said we have recently imported a puppy from the UK. We actually flew her into Dubai and cleared her ourselves, but we weren't on the same flight! Apply for an export health certificate from the UK, you need to nominate an official government vet to do the health check up to 5 days. Need rabies and other innoculations to be up to date. Apply for an import certificate into the UAE - I am not sure if Abu D is the same as Dubai sorry. This was issued very quickly and is valid a few weeks from issue. We flew our puppy in to arrive in the morning but by June it will be very hot so my suggestion would be to chose a flight arriving in the night. In Dubai after the plane landed we had to wait for Emirates cargo to send the documentation to their cargo desk and once that arrived (about an hour after the plane got in) we paid them AEd 135 approx, went to see the vet to show him the documents so he then went off to check the puppy while we went to customs to get everything stamped, and paid AED 30 to them, then back to the vet with all our stamped documents, he had in the meantime been to see the puppy, checked her over etc. We then paid him AED 403, you can pay by credit card or an eDirham card (I borrowed one of these from our PRO's at work and repaid them instead!) and we then waited in another area to be given the dog! In took 2 hours from the plane landing to getting back into our car, I was incredibly nervous but it was quite easy - cost us under AED 600, so we saved over AED 2000. From the UK we used Passport for pets and they were good, and very helpful. I did insist on having a plastic travel crate rather than the wooden one they originally quoted us for as we are still using it for 'crate training' and they are margionally more attractive! Let me know if you have any more questions, happy to help if I can. If you like email me and I can answer questions off the board. familymarriott at gmail dot com http://www.moew.gov.ae/Portal/en/our-services/animal-wealth/permits/إصدار-إذن-استيراد-حيوانات-الرفقة-قطط-ـ-كلاب.aspx https://www.abudhabi.ae/egovPoolPortal_WAR/appmanager/ADeGP/Citizen?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=p1300&lang=en&did=139402 [email protected]

Transport costs really add up in London, I think £500-600 a month to start with and then go from there. My dd recently graduated but was in Oxford and we gave her £200 every 2 weeks, she also worked about 10 hours a week in a uni gift shop in town but her hours were very flexible. Good luck , studying is so expensive, i can hardly tell you the relief when our dd got a full time job a month after graduating.

Go to a typing centre (there are lots about but the new Municipality Centre in Al Manara has 2), take along your passport and request they do the typing for your ID card, you pay AED 100 per year of validity of your visa plus a typing fee. The computer will then generate an appointment for you to attend one of the ID centres to do your finger printing etc.

Until any of us know otherwise I think all local dog owners (and everyone else) should be very careful anyway, indeed the dog could have ingested poison from another source (weed killer etc) but we should still all be on the lookout, lots of kids play on the grassy areas round the lakes and if a 21kg dog is so ill it could easily be a toddler next time.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Everything seems lovely. I will definitely look into all options. Has anyone been to Taiwan? A couple more recommendations on tour companies will b highly appreciated. Mb We used to live in Taiwan and being honest, it is probably the last place I would ever go on holiday! Saying that the National Palace Museum is amazing and some parts of the island quite beautiful, but overall I wouldn't list it in my Top 100 places to go, too many scooters, pollution and getting by without Chinese, difficult.
