My DH and I took the big decision 9 months ago to move from our villa to an apartment, after looking at dozens we found the perfect one, we have an open aspect view of a golf course and don't feel hemmed in at all, plus space wise we got rid of heaps but have adjusted to our more compact unit really well. In fact I could as far as to say we love our little place and are enjoying the extra money in the bank too!

I have to agree with the last 2 posters, also boys are always less mature than girls so being the eldest in a class might be to his advantage. Also schools have to have a cut off point somewhere!

Have you looked in Lifestyle or Homes R'Us? Otherwise down in Karama are lots of places selling lamps but most have coloured glass sides.

The fine/penalty would show up almost straight away online so check the Dubai police website inserting the registration number and if it doesn't appear the sellers are trying to exploit you.

A few places have a 6-8pm Happy Hour, the Observatory at the top of The Marriott Hotel in the Marina area is one and also one of the bars in Madinat Jumeirah, but I have forgotten which one - sorry!!

yes tried to buy at Geant today but none whatsoever. Neither of the French supermarket chains have p@rk sections so if US turkey/meat is deemed as non halal then they won't sell these products at all.

I spent quite a few days in the summer looking at villas in this development and whilst I loved the properties there is still quite a lot of construction there. So far no communal pools or parks (that I saw anyway) and the nearest shops are either in Silicon Oasis or Sky Courts on the main road - a supermarket there which would take about 10 minutes to reach. How long the journey to Sharjah would be depends on where in Sharjah you need to get to, some areas are very easy to reach but others down near the Corniche for instance take a lot longer. To the beach - approximately 20-30 minutes. Good luck with the move! Dubai is generally very safe, don't make this a hurdle - there are enough things to worry about anyway when you move here.

Choueifat is the best school although it is difficult to get in since they have a long waiting list, you can also try dubai college Unless Dubai College has opened an early years school without anyone knowing forget this suggestion as they are a selective senior school for kids 11 years and over. Everyone's views on Choueifat differ, I used to threaten my kids with it if their grades dropped........! Go onto the dubai faqs website and use the drop down suggestions for schools - that way you will get the whole range of schools available to apply to with all of Dubai. Next year the new KHDA rules will insist new pupils pay 30% of the school fees upfront, non refundable if you don't take up your place, this new system should put a stop to people holding onto multiple school places and depriving others of a place at all. It'll be tough on some families to find the money but in theory it is a good move.

I think the GEMS school group will be promoting Robotics groups in early October, they have given the kids in their schools first choice but then the classes will be opened to everyone.

I have 2 colleagues working near DCC and they both live in The Marina - tell him it'll cost a fortune to move!! If he insists then look at Festival City there are some lovely apartments there, I think you need to visit the Al Futtaim Leasing Dept just along from IKEA.

I've never been able to donate blood in the UK as i'm disqualified for living in "exotic" countries And no children yet.... I think it depends on how long agao you lived in some places, I lived in west Africa from 89-91 and was able to donate blood here earlier this year.

What is this? I don't think I was asked for whatever this is when I sponsored my husband. This is an official document with a map of the location of your villa, including a plot number - most of the villas in Umm Suqeim/Jumeirah etc have these rather than title deeds. Title deeds are required for freehold properties. This requirement is relatively new and is needed to sponsor family and maids etc.

You will need either an affection plan OR a copy of the title deed, plus a utilities bill in you name.

I remember my kids being asked in class whose parents smoked and my son being totally embarrassed to admit his Mum did (I gave up a few days later.....;) )maybe if the teachers ask who is allowed to sit in the car without a seat belt the message might get home that way, and educate the kids about the importance of being strapped in!

When I first came here and we lived in the villa I often used to get gardeners knocking on the door, and they would always ask if the boss was in ...... lol So if I was you I would tell any gardener (especially if they are asking for a donation) to come back when the 'boss' is home. :) Years ago when we first arrived the gardener knocked on the door and wanted to speak to the boss, I happilly told him what we needed doing but he said 'No I want to speak toThe Boss, you Housemaid Boss!" I think that would drive me insane! I was really taken aback at the time and now I find it very funny!!

I haven't been recently but from memory I think the swimming was out of use for quite a long time. Also there are lots of units which are inhabited by flat sharers, if you search Dubizzle on rooms to rent in The Marina loads of ads will show up.

Thank you all very much! And it's such a relief that no one has commented on our budget as being unrealistically tight! As someone who is not working at the moment - what is the best way to meet people? X I will say it then (!) 2 beds are over your budget in Downtown but you should look in the other areas and Business Bay too, and I am sure you will find something good. Put your budget into Dubizzle and the number of bedrooms you want and see what pops up. Good luck with your search, do make sure you have copies of the title deed, owners passport/visa and a draft contract before you pay anything!

Generally any maintenance costing over AED 500 is the landlords responsibility and below the tenants. Without a doubt structural maintenance of the pool is HIS! The rent committee is the only way to go, at least threaten him with it and see if he gives in!

Yes it is the same one Hilsbils. I think the responsibility to provide the tenant with correct documents should be placed on the real estate agent, they are after all 'trained' by RERA and know exactly what is required. Dewa has tightened up procedures recently and you'd be amazed how many agents pretend that they don't know the new rules, their fee should include arranging the Dewa connection for the tenant then they would appreciate how tough it is these days, and do something for their 5%. My pet hate is these 'Authority to Rent' letters signed by landlords (or not, my suspicious mind never believes them to be genuine), landlords should understand that the tenant needs protection and support them and their interests too.
