Hi Folks I am coming to Dubai to furnish my Marina apartment next week. Reading the responses, I am sure to find someone to make my curtains, but would they be happy if I were to take fabric with me from UK ? Not very as they make their profit on the fabrics you chose. Also it will weigh a lot so you might be better bringing other things with you, and save more. Fabrics here tend to come from Asia and are not outrageously expensive, if you chose carefully.

That matches my experiences with them - tell them the budget, they show you stuff 10-15k over but say that the landlords negotiable then when the time comes to negotiate the landlord says no he wants the original price. I think they hope you'll up your budget if you see something you like enough, and as we all know that isn't always possible. Hope you like what you see with House Hunters, from experience they are one of the best agencies to deal with and mostly their landlords have been told the rules here.

If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. It is time this market was tidied up, deposits need to be lodged in an escrow account and rents paid monthly - only then will this type of scam come to an end.

Thanks! Oww, but if they give me post dated cheques , can they default on payments? Does it mean my cheque would be retrurned? Have you heard about FHS property or MarksFalcon? Stay away from them both.

I swear I went to a location inside Union Co-op? Upstairs in the same building?? My last company's PRO took me there. I also remember it being more expensive than 150, I thought it was over 300. I must be getting old and fuzzy brained :) This place has closed down, the RTA office relocated to the new municipality centre in Al Manara.

Thanks Littleone I will look into Barkbusters, and research if we could do a course in England. Perhaps I am being paranoid but my biggest concern is the toilet training! My DH will be at home with the pup almost all the time so I don't envisage her being alone more than a few hours ever, and we've decided to do doggy day care if he (DH) has to go to Abu Dhabi for a day, so hopefully barking won't be an issue but i might be eating my words come January! I just can't get my head round going down more than 30 floors with a puppy and a full bladder (or worse) and getting there in time! We always had a garden with our old dog! Any tips much appreciated!

Thanks everyone. I know Alison from DKC as I've recommended her to lots of people over the years - I was hoping that as our puppy will still be very small I could do the excess luggage route but it seems not!! Actually we are booked KLM (way cheaper) so I will have to arrange this slightly differently but I am on to it! Yes it she is a Havanese ( I was determined to find one!!) but only born on the 14th August so she'll come back with us after Christmas - the timing is actually perfect as we can socialise her with our family in the UK and friends with dogs, then bring her home in time for New Year - I will have 3 weeks with her before having to get back to work :) and leaving my DH in charge!

On behalfnof a friend. What happens if you and your OH are not married? Is it ok to have both names on the tenancy contract? Given the new rules they both need to be on the tenancy agreement as visas are due, bu coincidence, for renewal same month and same year, so they can't do one year each on the lease. Thanks Don't have both your names put on - it flags many questions up. You don't need an tenancy contract to get a UAE visa, only to sponsor a dependant.

I work for a big company in the HR dept and I hate it when a broker says they manage somewhere, you have to give them Power of Attorney to do this completely legally as their contract with the owner isn't a truly legal document. If you are in Dubai I would stay away from this type of arrangement and bank my own cheques. Also I have known brokers to rent out a property for less than they say they will give the landlord then they default on payments to the LL. Stick with the big names - Better Homes etc. and do lots of due diligence on any agent you consider using to work on your behalf.

I would class near Burjaman as Bur Dubai - put out a message for Wuffles, she lives that way and knows it really well as she walks everywhere (but she might be back in Oz on holiday at the moment).

Explain the location and I am bound to have been over the years and know someone who lived there, been doing relocation in Dubai since the year dot!

We have been looking for a small dog here for months now, despite trawling K9 and Animal League websites here and sending numerous emails, ALL the dogs I see are too big for a small apartment! We are experienced dog owners but have to be selective on size, and we are just being realistic. We did look in the pet shop on Beach Road a few weeks ago and although I was impressed by how clean all the dogs are, and their kennels, they did seem very lethargic - mind you when it's 40c+ outside so are we! If anyone knows of a small dog needing a home (we can't take anything bigger than 8-10kg) please let me know! Thanks.

While teenager son is waiting to start uni in Australia in early March 2013, he is looking for a part-time job in Dubai. Any recommendation would be appreciated. Have you any younger kids at school here? My son worked at DAA before heading off to the States to study but he went to school there so they knew him, but most of the US schools have class assistants jobs and the kids love having the young guys help them, my son had quite a fan club of 3-5 year olds (and a few mums too!).

I think you might have to take them both to school yourself and wake the baby up to go too, sleeping til 10am is not really very practical - I always had to take my little one along as we lived in places where school buses didn't exist and maids were unheard of!

I have a feeling Yellow Fever vaccines are not available here anywhere other than the municipal clinics - it is a restricted vaccine, even in the UK you have to go to special centre to get it done. Also if there is any likelihood you might be pregnant don't have one, I have heard they are linked to miscarriage.

Thats so quick! Do they make you do the typing on the ground floor and then head up to the first floor or is it all being handled on the first floor?Mine took an hour a few years back but has expired No typing needed just go straight to the counter and do everything there, they will just send you out to pay the cashier and then you go back in clutching the receipt and come out with your new card!

Take care discussing vee pee enn's on here, they are not really allowed and sites will get blocked as soon as they are identified. As for your magicjack - maybe they work here but I have never heard anyone talking about them. Most of us rely on Skype for calling home, and Skype to Skype is allowed.

Also, you could explain to him that, by the time he rent again the house, and deduct the agency fees, he will end up earning less money with a new contract of 115 000 dhs (new tenants) than renewing your contract for 100 000 dhs. Sadly this isn't altogether accurate as the tenant pays the agent here :( I have to say I am sick to the back teeth with both landlords and agents, what happens to them in Ramadan and the summer generally? They seem to grow 2 heads. edited by Cornish Pixie on 14/08/2012

Thanks for this name Feefmick, I have always sent Guernsey Flowers before but the Scilly Isles are almost home for me so I will try them out next time I want to send flowers!
