DESCO might be able to help, their office is just round the corner from the Media One hotel. Otherwise maybe the business centre in one of the hotels, I think they will still have fax facilities.

You can definately rely on it. We were at RERA last week and it was the first thing they checked and told us our landlord could not increase rental. This is good news, one of the people I work with is having problems too so I suggested a trip to RERA! This site only seems to work if the contract renewal date is within 3 months of expiry, I have had some odd things happen when I input extended expiry dates - no 5 beds in Jumeirah etc

Do you not have to go for a medical in Dubai before the residence visa is issued? The online visa will be issued first and the new employee enters the country on that visa, then you go for the medical and only after the results are back is the visa stamped into the passport. When DH's residency visa is stamped in the rest of the families can be processed.

Get your marriage certificate and the childrens' birth certificates attested and notarised, that is all they will need to get your residency visas.

Now have to tell DS this'll be the last year he'll be able to spend his birthday, 2nd July back home with his big sisters, almost mid July before they finish is going to be awful. That's my birthday too! I think I was always in school for my birthdays, if I can remember that far back.

Wellington DSO is also wait listing many grades including FS2 and Year 2, this was just before their Easter break. The situation is desperate this year, worse than in the past few years. I think when you are offered a school place the option should only be open for a limited period and a substantial deposit ought to be paid to secure that place, then people down the wait list will get offers sooner.

I need to get these done too but have a few questions; Do you pay ID card fee and fines at the typing stage and do you have to pay cash or will they take cards? Do you have to leave passports there? I am really nervous about leaving them and sure I read somewhere not to leave them? If DH residency visa is due for renewal this Sept should he wait or get one now? DS was 15 in Feb will the fines apply from that date only or from Dec as we are on RAK visas so assume we are up for some fines? Thanks Ladies from confused.com........... I can't answer all your questions...... Yes you pay the fees and fines at the typing stage, I think they all insist on cash! You can leave your passports with the typing centre or you can wait until the typing is finished and take them with you, I only use one typing centre and they know me well so I feel OK about leaving the passports (but only for a few hours). Everyone has to have an ID card, regardless of age, the only difference is that children under 16 do not have to have their finger/palm prints done or iris scans, in fact they don't need to go to the ID card centre in person. As far as your DH leaving the ID card til his visa renewal date - I wouldn't as they are saying you need a valid ID card to be able to process a new residency visa. My DH has a RAK visa too and hasn't bothered with his ID card yet, I am guessing he will have to pay the maximum AED 1000 when he finally gets round to it.

Does anyone know if we take passport photos for the Emirates ID or they take photos of you. If they take photos do they do this on the first day you hand form in or second day when you do fingerprints etc or do they do everything on the same day? TIA. You pay the typing fee and ID card charges to the typing centre and once you have the typing back there is nothing to stop you going straight to the ID centre proper to have your prints and photos done. You only need to take your original passport and the typing work to the ID centre, and it's all done in the one visit.

As someone else said DEWA can't do anything. Go to Dubai Municipality in the new centre by the Noor Bank metro station, Al Manara, they are only open Sunday to Thursday though from 7.30 - 2.30 (from memory). I got the housing fee refunded from the final bill at our old villa and they recalculated our new housing fee having taken our rent at 300k not 130k - funny how I noticed such a massive difference. When I checked the balance online both adjustments showed almost immediately. Do take an NOC if the bill is in your DH's name and a copy of his passport/visa just to be sure. Good luck I got over AED 1400 refunded!

It is quite normal to pay the 5% holding deposit when you book a property and this becomes the security deposit for the duration of the rental. I always ask to see a draft copy of the rental agreement before we pay the deposit cheque as it can be unrefundable if you change your mind. HTH

It's probably just a rumor. A 20% increase would be huge! Sadly not a rumour. One of our new employees has just been billed for Autumn term 2012 for 2 kids (senior school) and the increase is 9k per child per year. They justify this by saying they have not increased their fees for 5 years.

I gave up almost 13 years ago and have never weakened, the first 6 months were hardest but I used the Nicotine inhalators (I don't know if you can find them here) and that gave me something to hold and puff on, for me this was the difference between success and failure. It is great being a non smoker I have never regretted giving up, you are doing really well - I think the first week is the hardest, now you must just think of yourself as a non smoker. Lively Trish - Well done, fantastic! I hope you are feeling 100% again now. CP xx

anyone have any experience of the AC in the Ford Explorer? (The new one) Me! I had an old Explorer (2005) for 6 years and the AC was OK, it took a while to cool down but my new one (2011) has a far better AC but I have to agree with the poster about Prado's and Pajero's - they are better than the American SUV's, it's just a shame that they cost more! The Explorer has vents in the middle and far back but the control for these seats is at the front, though you can vary the temperature.

I don't think it's illegal to ask for their fees to be paid before the contract is fully signed but it's not advisable or ideal. I have had many rows with Better Homes over this request, but not always won!

Hi Cornish Pixie, there was an advert on the board at Choitrams in The Greens about an available parking space where you wanted. We have one now thank you, a very kind gentleman is allowing us to use his for nothing. Just shows there are still some very generous souls about. (I hope he enjoys the huge basket of goodies we delivered!)

They are not allowed to charge for renewal but many are asking a small admin fee of between AED 200-500, any more than this is pure greed, the admin fee for renewal is stated in some contract. What they are not allowed to do is charge you agency fees again!

As someone who's housemaid did not come back after a holiday I would NOT pay her the April salary but tell her that she will get it on her return and as a gesture of goodwill offer to pay her the cost of the transfer (it's only a few dhs anyway to transfer). Our housemaid had every intention of returning (all her stuff was in her room) but her husband had other ideas - so you really don't know what she is facing when she gets home and how she will feel. I think you are being more than fair. She is taking her holiday early so don't feel bad. I thought of you and your absconding maid as I read this thread - hope you and the family are all well! CP x

I will lose the will to live if I have to start going through this palava for each of our employees before they can take on a property, we have had someone refused entry to the communal facilies in a Damac property recently so the disease is spreading from the Palm out.

Monthly rentals are always more expensive as they have to include the DEWA, TV and internet etc Check on Dubizzle, using the short term option. One of the best companies around are PK Rent and also Better Homes, they both specialise in short term rentals.
