I was trying very hard to get hold of you last week as our dog died unexpectedly and I was looking for a new puppy. We have now found one, a neighbours Jack Russell has a litter and we are taking one from her on January 1st. I hope you find lovely homes for all your furry babies!

Non renewable leases and enforcing them either way is, I feel anyway, still a grey area. In theory you should be able to go to RERA and report the landlord for re-marketing the property at a higher price, whilst having terminated your lease because they need the property for a family member. In practise I fear RERA will want you to lodge money upfront to make a claim against them and without any guarantee of success this is rather risky. The tenancy rules here do still feel in favour of the landlord, they receive the rent months upfront, don't pay a penny towards agents fees and when they want to get more rent they simply turf their long suffering tenant out and find a new one! Nothing to stop you taking a quick trip to RERA Spongemonkey and having a chat, what they have done is certainly wrong and frowned upon BUT I don't know if RERA will act on your behalf and rapp them on the knuckles, and say don't do this again please pay Mrs SM AED xxx in compensation. Let us know how you get on please, this isn't the first time this has happened this year and it won't sadly be the last.

I think they look at 2000 units for one month so as your bill was for less than 2 weeks you jumped the next band at 900 units. It looks it is the same for water. This actually makes sense to me too! Sorry October I fear the bill might be correct :(

Hiya, it sounds wrong to me - I just checked our last 6 bills and each went from G to Y (electricity) at 2000, and with the water G to Y at 6000 gallons. I think you'll have to visit DEWA to get them to explain.

Thanks for your thoughts, any more? Our staff get allowances based on their grade and family size, where they come from in the world is immaterial - so of course many from the subcontinent save a lot more than those from Europe and the USA! CPx

We have different rates of allowance, depending on the family size and grade of individual- I have to review the numbers and put some suggestions forward. Although I help out dozens of people a month it is hard to pinpoint the right level of accomodation people should expect to achieve, does that make sense??

You are in cloud cuckoo land if you think you'll get it for much less than AED 4000. I trawled around a few months back and some of the quotes I got were very expensive. edited by Cornish Pixie on 07/12/2011

I am going to suggest Dragon Mart, not that I have been recently or ever seen them there - I just know one of my neighbours bought marble floor tiles there (and they were an amazing price) so I am assuming they will have wall tiles too!

I know someone who got one last August and they have had a bore hole made (against all the rules I hasten to add). They had their names down on a list for 4 months, I think if you can be flexible and able to move when they have something you may get lucky but they don't come up often. True lovely gardens and very good sized villas too.

Thanks for your replies ladies but I was asking about getting a licence here? Have any of you got it with only your photcard? I think I will be fine but DH seems to think I will need both card and the photo bit? Just the card part and have a photo copy of both sides, and your passport/visa pages too.

Because alcohol has restricted distribution in the region personally importing it would be forbidden. Even when you ship your personal possesions alcohol is among the banned items. I suggest you apply for a liquor license and buy wine in the same way as the rest of us have to!

I think that serviced apartments can charge seasonal rates unless you take something for a full year. I don't think they will be covered by RERA as you don't sign a standard tenancy contract.

One of the problems here is that rental agencies do not always have responsibility following the set up of the rental contract, it is up to the owner how they handle maintenance. Have you been in your place long? Did to assertain who the line of contact is when you first moved in?

If your dog is still quite young then bring her over here, our beagle was 3 when he came and I have never for one moment regretted bringing him - we were his pack. On a sad note he died last night, hence I am up at this crazy hour feeling rather weepy. edited by Cornish Pixie on 02/12/2011

I lived in Germany for years and used to go to Tchibo every Wednesday when the new stock was due in to what they were selling that week - great quality and great prices. My kids wore nighties/pyjamas for years from Tchibo, in fact my maid still wears one of my DD's cast offs and we left HH 9 years ago!

99% of them are a waste of time then one comes along that is worth buying. I have bought 2 this week - the brunch at the Jumeirah Hotel on The Palm (50% off) and the safe driver deal. So many are from unknown retailers/service providers in out of the way places - i just delete these!

I recently looked into private health insurance for maids - it isn't that expensive (AED2000 per year upwards), I am surprised it is not obligatory here or not advertised/sold more agressively at least.

If it is for fingerprinting appointment you can also go to Room F22, Building 12 in Knowledge Village without an appointment but it is on a first come first serve basis so first thing in the morning is the best time.... I am confused - I thought once the typing had been processed by the typing centre you were given an appointment at any one of the Emirates ID centres. I have taken lots of our peoples passports in for typing and the appointmnents have come back all over the place - Barsha, Karama and Jafiliyia. Can anyone clear this up? What can you get processed in Knowledge Village?

The Trident buildings are mostly quite good, Marina Promenade and The Quays both have good facilities and Al Majara (the latter 3 are all Emaar buildings). Try Marina Tower, call the building manager Ana - 04 438 4026, don't be put off if the unit needs work - someone I know recently took a unit there and it was in desperate need of refurbing and it was all done on the date they promised!

I had my Explorer done at 3M in Ibn Battuta a few months back and it was AED1900 in total, that was maximum tint on the back and sides and the best quality clear on the windscreen. Well worth it the car remains much cooler in summer!
