Thank goodness for EW, there has been nothing in the press about this scam - really these things should be reported on. edited by Cornish Pixie on 02/11/2014

There are toilet facilities in the gate rooms on the Emaar developments but maybe they don't allow construction workers or gardeners to use them. We live in The Views and I regularly see taxi drivers walking into the basement car parking and I can only assume its to go to the bathroom. It is quite ridiculous that facilities are not provided for all these men, very third world.

Many years ago I got a letter printed in 7 Days when my dog managed to roll in human poo in the undergrowth at The Lakes, it was disgusting and I found out that gardeners/workers weren't allowed to use the loos at the pools etc. The construction/developers really ought to provide facilities as the alternatives are very unhygienic. Please send in a letter and hopefully raise the profile of this problem again.

So sorry to hear about your accident. I had 10+ weeks non weight bearing this summer following a bad ankle fracture, all I can say is try to get as comfortable as you can downstairs - set your area up with your things, my kindle, IPad and laptop kept me sane. Suggest you get a wheelchair so you can go outside with someone pushing you, the pavements and streets here are not great but the malls are OK. You will have to rely on everyone to help so try To stay calm and relaxed, enjoy reading and watching movies with your kids and dont feel guilty. You will make a good recovery, go with the physio it helps so much, maybe there are some exercises you can do even now. Be brave and stay strong. CP xx

I'm hoping it means it's supplied centrally but you can control individually and the cost is included in the management fee paid by the owner so included in the rental costs? I have good news for you, it means exactly the above! The Downtown area is very well located and the apartments are well finished, Emaar are the best developers. Welcome to Dubai.

One of my colleagues is caught up in this too, his lease is with the landlord and he has a copy of an agreement the LL made with Max giving them permission to act on his behalf. The scam went like this - Max agrees to pay L L Rent in 4-6 cheques, takes 1 cheque in payment from tenant then absconds with rent paid by tenant failing to pay landlord. As per usual tenant made to feel they are in the wrong but they have paid in full and the landlords feel wronged as Max have dis appeared not paying them - all in all another bl@@dy mess, this will keep happening until people pay rents monthly then the risks are far less than now for both sides.

Surely a tenants deposit is there for LL to pay the final bill if the tenant does a runner? The deposit for the LL is there in case there are damages to the property, not to pay unpaid Dewa bills. That's actually not true. It is to cover any unpaid bills, damage to the property etc. I don't think that's correct. In the hight of summer, a villa with a pool can easily have a Dewa bill of 6,000 dhs. That could encourage people not to close the Dewa accounts and leave it for the LL to sort out, as he's holding a security deposit for the lease. What about Etisalat/Du bills? If the tenant does a runner the landlord should at least be holding the security deposit to offset any outstanding bills. Dewa would only refund the deposit to the correct person too, they are very strict about this.

This is disgraceful but not unusual. I have been trying to get the 20k deposit back on a Palm villa since January for one of our ex employees, last excuse was the landlord is in the UK for a month, I did sarcastically point out that I am sure she managed to bank the new deposit and rent monies! It is so hard, I have to keep trying to get this refund as it is company money but it is such a nightmare, the money should be held by a 3rd party as it now is in the UK but I fear we are decades away from that system here in the UAE. Can't you file a complaint with rera? No we can't as the tenancy contract was in the employees name and he has returned to his home country ?

To cover unpaid bills. Really starting to feel like I am being nickeled and dimed to death! I can't see how they have any unpaid bills as the new tenant/owner can not open a new account unless the account is clear ? Landlords have to lodge a deposit these days too, they are certainly funding any expansion with all our money!

One Christmas/New Year we had a houseful - 2 families with kids, so 8 guests. We decided the only fair way to work out the finances was to do what we do when we rent a shared villa in France for the holidays, everyone pays a daily amount per person (kids under 18 half price) and at the end of the period anything left in the kitty goes towards a nice meal out. Now with the kids grown up, and no longer living at home, we tend to pay everything on behalf of my Mum but expect other guests to pay their own way, we do generally pay for one meal out either a brunch or dinner though. Even our working daughter pays her own way! edited by Cornish Pixie on 13/10/2014

Nakheel metro station is very close but after Eric Clapton it was manic! If you don't mind driving i suggest you park on the Emirtaes Golf Club side of the road and cross using the metro bridge. Or better still order a Careem car both ways as you won't get a taxi for ages!

I like mine but none of the maids I had liked to use it, agency maids or not, they all try and then stick with the bucket and mop, no idea why. If i do myself, I prefer the steam mop. I have had the same experience, when I use it the floor is dry almost immediatly and it's streak free so if you don't have a maid I would say buy one, but if you do maybe don't bother!

We used Hitches and Glitches last time, it was AED 200 per unit. They did a good job. We've used MPlus too and had mixed success. Make sure they clean the drip trays, every time we have had a problem they have alway been the cause - a blockage or something!

The company that I work for have many employees working in KSA and the family live in Dubai, we arrange an employment visa for our employee and they then sponsor the family. It seems to work well. Health insurance and allowances are according to the UAE not Saudi. edited by Cornish Pixie on 24/09/2014

The two year rule for the rent to remain the same in year 2 was replaced by the new rent calculator, so unfortunately rents can go up on your first renewal :( However I also don't think a 3 year agreement would hold up with the rent committee if it came to it, 190k for a 3+ study seems a fair price too.

Security isn't really an issue in Dubai, even buildings where there is a 24/7 concierge it doesn't stop people just walking past them if they are busy, or walking in beside someone else, few doormen challenge visitors. The security in the high rises is better than in the older Greens apartments but I haven't heard any horror stories. We've now lived in a The Greens for 3 years and we are very settled, my commute to work is easy and we are never stuck in traffic, the shopping centre is great and people are generally really friendly!

I think you should request a one on one meeting to discuss your child not go straight in and insist he changes class, he is probably still settling in to proper school - as you are! Don't allianate the school in the first few weeks, teachers talk and it won't help either your child or your reputation. Relax a little, you have another 15 years of new teachers ahead of you!!!
