There is no law that a maid must live in a maids room, providing you have 2+ bedrooms you may employ a maid legally. It is a good idea to use the study instead, the 1 and 2 units have become so expensive recently, out of so many budgets.

Thanks, I want to order them from the US but don't know how the sizes work, I would have like do try them on. Had ankle surgery and I keep reading that cold is the killer on the pain front.

You may have to make a lunch hour dash and do it yourself, or send your maid in a cab, Careem do a special school run price too. This is the dilemma of all working parents and one reason there are so many SAHM's here.

Yes it does, you will be charged 5% of the average rent ( taken from the Rera rent calculator) and this sum is divided by 12 and collected monthly. That being the average rent for your style, size and location of villa. Goodness I find the housing fee hard to explain! <em>edited by Cornish Pixie on 29/08/2014</em>

Perhaps you'll avoid knowing if you've been nominated for the ALS ice bucket challenge then(!!), my DH was laughing that he'd been forgotten and then he gets 2 nominations in an hour, agghhhh! I will happily donate but couldn't do the bucket thing :)

I haven't heard that but it wouldn't surprise me. As other labor supplying countries stop supplying maids, the government needs to find new countries and they are now looking to Africa. Wouldn't it be nice to have a French speaking maid? There is French and West African French! Having lived in Côte d'Ivoire for quite a few years I'd have to say the language spoken there is quite patois (pigeon) French. With the Ebola crisis I have doubts if the government here will allow visas for people from that part of the world right now.

Make sure you see the title deed and matching owners passport, only write the cheque to that person! Be careful if there is a management agreement that allows the broker to collect the rent, only a signed and stamped PoA is acceptable to do this. We've been with Emirates NBD for 10 years now and on the whole been happy, their online banking is good but I prefer using it via my laptop as I find the iPad version quite limiting ( it's probably me but I can't pay Dewa from the iPad !).

Bear in mind my kids are now grown up but the best piece of advice I was given by the health visitor in the UK was to have a few special toys to let my then 19 month old son to play with while I fed No 2 baby, it helped with jealously and my son would always be asking if it was time to feed DD yet!

That article is just the usual "pity the poor LLs" boilerplate. They already have too many things in their favour, like the insane and massively unfair one-cheque system and the fact that tenants, not LLs, pay the estate agent fees, which are not trivial. If LLs feel that they are unfairly put upon here, they need to agree to modernise their whole system and accept monthly payments and start paying the fees for letting their properties. They also need to let go of the idea that they are somehow entitled to a full year's rent from every tenant. I can't press 'like' as the option isn't available but I agree with every word you wrote.

That's outrageous! Last time I went to Trinco (North East coast) which is a minimum 5 hour journey on a terrible road for 10,000 LKR. Bentota isn't that far from the airport in comparison so that price is a definite rip off. Can you negotiate with them? Or are they firmly saying thats the price? This is the hotels price, and we have to prepay by credit card! It is only a 1.5 hour journey. We were thinking about just getting there and seeing who has a decent car and the fare we can negotiate, would this be crazy?

Do you still need the full medical and biometrics if you've had a visa and ID card before? When I transferred to my own visa all I had to do was the blood test. edited by Geordie expat on 17/08/2014 That's right just a blood test, I am not sure if you need to do new biometrics for the ID card.

I am sure a UK lawyer could knock out a PoA without any difficulty, it should be accepted here if your DH gets it stamped by Dubai Courts. My husband is just asking his lawyers and they say it has to be attested by Dubai Courts!!

You will need your marriage certificate notarising/attesting/legalising, copy of your passport, 6 passport photos with white background, Ejari tenancy contract, recent copy of dewa bill. When the visa has been issued you will need to go for a medical and ID card biometrics, after getting the typing done at a typing centre of course! (Sorry on an iPad and it's hard to go back and correct typos so I hope this makes sense).

Generally as long as you've provided the rent cheques they will wait for a fully signed contract. Do you need the contract straight away or can it wait until you are both able to sign?

Your husbands company should be able to get you a 2 or 3 year visa, family visas can be applied for at any time and do not start and expire at the same time as the sponsors visa. However if your DH's visa is cancelled then any dependent family visas have to be cancelled or 'held' with a special 5k deposit until the sponsors new visa is issued by the new employer.

Can you not request the new contract early or get him to sign a scanned copy until he gets back? I don't think it is very expensive to get a PoA just a hassle as it has to be stamped by the Dubai courts, and they are busy places.

Expat woman team, can I ask what your criteria is for screening of maids ads. I have to say I'm shocked to see an ad currently live for a family seeking a maid in Al Barsha stating Day off not allowed -Personal mobile allowed only on Saturday of every week It would provide much reassurance to those of us who actually care deeply about the vulnerability of workers here, if you vetted the ads for basic human rights when people quite openly say no day off and no access to the outside world except for Saturdays. I can't imagine the poster has been inundated with applications, can you?

Yes you can as long as you have a copy of the passport and visa pages, I think they may charge more to cancel a visa when the actual document isn't available.

I feel his pain, I have been non weight bearing since fracturing my ankle badly in June, I was not put in a cast after my surgery though - I think all surgeons work differently but if the bones are stable they don't always think plaster is necessary BUT non weight bearing is essential for healing to happen. I had a 2nd opinion from Barry Kilcop at Medcare Orthopaedic, he is very nice and down to earth, he reassured me that I am on course and to hang in there! Good luck, I am sure your son will soon be 100% again and back playing sports etc.

Have you enquired at the Zahra Hospital in Al Barsha, one of my colleagues wife delivered there and they were very happy, I have no idea how expensive they are though but it has to be cheaper than the American Hospital or City.

I suggest your friend called Alison at The Dog House who will give her good advice, to be honest it can be less stressful having someone handle this for you - but it is quite expensive.

You can buy outside lights that have an integrated motion detector but I don't know if you can add one to an existing fitting. Look in ACE they have a reasonable lighting section.

I buy the large bottles from Strawberry.net, the shipping costs aren't wild and I was fed up with salon prices and sizes too. The only problem I encountered was they they didn't come with a pump so I had to negotiate with my salon to give me two.
